Part III Reading Comprehension(20x2=40points) Passage1 It may look like just another playgroup, but a unique educational center in Manhattan is really giving babies something to talk about."It's a school to teach languages to babies and young children with games, songs--some of the classes also have arts and crafts," said Francois Thibaut, the founder of the Langrage Workshop for Children, a place where babies become bilingual. Children as young as few months are exposed to French and Spanish before many of them can even speak English. Educators use special songs and visual (视觉的) aids to ensure that when a child is ready to talk, the languages wil l n o t be so foreign."Children have a unique capacity to learn many languages at the same time," said Thibaut."Already at nine months, a child can tell the differences between the sounds he or she has heard since birth and the sounds he or she has never heard yet." Thibaut says the best time to expose children to language is from birth to 3 years old. For the last 30 years, the school has been using what it calls the Thibarut Technique, a system that combines language lessons with child's play. "I always wanted to learn Spanish, but by the time I got to high school it was too late to pick it up and speak fluently," said Marc Lazare, who enrolled his son at the school."I figured at this age, two, it's a perfect time for him to learn." Aside from learning a language, the kids also gain a tremendous sense of confidence. One young student boasted that aside from French, she can speak five languages (though that included "monkey" and "lion"). The school gives children the tools to communicate, and sometimes that gives them an advantage over their parents."I think they sometimes speak French when they think I won't understand them," said parent Foster Gibbons Depending on the age group, classes run from 45 minutes up to 2 hours. Even when the students are not in class, the program is designed to make sure the learning continues at home. Tapes and books are included so kids can practice on their own.(359) 41.The word "bilingual" in the first paragraph probably means A.capable of using two languages B.both clever and confident C.aware of their own limitations and strengths D.independent of their parents 42.The passage tells us that the best time for a child to learn languages is A. before seven years old B.from birth to three years old C. in his childhood D. in his teens 43.According to Thibaut, it is possible. A.for children to take advantage of their parents by using a foreign language B. to expose children to a foreign language after they can speak C. to combine language lessons with sports games D. for children to learn several languages at the same time 44.The school teaches language by. A.exposing children to the new environment https://www.360docs.net/doc/3a19201560.html,ing modern facilities and equipment C. combining language lessons with games D. giving children confidence 45. The best title for this text is A. A Unique Language School for Children B.The Foreign Language for Children to Learn C. Special Songs and Visual Aids in Learning D.The Best Way to Learn a Foreign Language Passage2 The differences in living standards around the world are vast. In 1993, the average American had an income of about $25,000. In the same year, the average Mexican earned $7,000, and the average Nigerian earned $1,500. Not surprisingly, this large variation in average income is reflected in various measures of the quality of life. Changes in living standards over time are also large. In the United States, incomes have historically grown about 2 percent per year (after adjusting for changes in the cost of living). At this rate, average income doubles every 35 years. In some countries, economic growth has been even more rapid. In Japan, for instance, average income has doubled in the past 20 years, and in South Korea it has doubled in the past 10 years.

Unit 1 Passage 1 In business, you have to deal in person with all kinds of people. When talking to people within your company who don't speak your language, you may have to use English; these people may be colleagues or co-workers — who may work with you in your own department, in another part of the building or in another branch. And you may also have to deal with people from outside the organization: clients, suppliers, visitors and members of the public. Moreover, these people may be friends or strangers — people of your own age, or people who are younger or older than you. The relationship you have with a person determines the kind of language you use. For example, it's not appropriat e to say “Hi, how are you!” when meeting the Managing Director of a large company or to say “Good morning, it's a great pleasure to meet you.” when being introduced to a person you'll be working closely with in the same team. People usually form an impression of you from the way you speak and behave. People in different countries have different ideas of what sounds friendly, polite or sincere — and of what sounds rude or unfriendly! Good manners in your culture may be considered bad manners in another. Sometimes your body language, gestures and expressions may tell people more about you than the words you use. 1. The topic of the passage is _____. A. self-image in business situation B. the importance of appropriate choice of language C. dealing with people in business D. the importance of building relationships with your workmates 2. The language you use when talking with people in business is decided by _____. A. your relationship with the particular person B. yourself C. your boss D. the company your are working for

Passage 1 Ieoh Ming Pei is definitely one of the biggest names in architecture. Born in China in 1917, Pei was the son of a prominent banker. He grew up mostly in Hong Kong and Shanghai. At the age of 17, Pei left for the United Slates to study architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and then Harvard University. Pci attracted great attention in the U.S. for the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston, but it was the Louvre Pyramid that brought him worldwide fame. In 1981, the newly elected President of France came up with an ambitious plan for a variety of construction projects, including the renovation of the Louvre Museum. Pei was invited to join the renovating team. Pei finally agreed to take on the project after three secretive trips to Paris. Pei designed not only a glass and steel pyramid to serve as the entrance to the Louvre, but also a transformation of the interiors. The public reacted harshly to the design, mostly because of the proposed pyramid. In an attempt to soothe public anger, Pei took a suggestion from then-mayor of Paris and placed a full-sized model of the pyramid in the courtyard of the Louvre. During the four days of its exhibition, an estimated 60,000 people visited the site. Critics eased their opposition after witnessing the proposed scale of the pyramid. The new entrance was opened to the public in March, 1989. By that time, public opinion had softened on the Pyramid; a poll found a 56 percent approval rating for the pyramid. tl Thc much-fcarcd pyramid has become adorable,” wrote a French writer. The experience was exhausting fbr Pci, but also rewarding. t4Aftcr the Louvre," Pci said later, "I thought no project would be too difficult." Now the Louvre Pyramid isPei's most famous structure. The squares aren't just ornamental. They are designed to collect the energy created by pedestrians. It is estimated that 40 million pedestrians will use that walkway in a year. It will generate several hundred kilowatt-hours of electricity from the footsteps. That's enough to power half the mail's outdoor lighting.
