After noticing that her eighth grade students had problems focusing during math class, a North Carolina teacher decided to channel(引导)their energy in a different way—cycling.

It doesn’t sound like the most common thing to do during math class, but Bethany Lambeth, a teacher from Wake County, says that ever since she fixed cycling machines under her students’ desks, the quality of their work has improved greatly. They are paying more attention to what the teachers say, and, most importantly, they are no longer fidgeting all the time.

“Before, they were drumming on their desks or touching other students. They don’t do that any more now. Their feet are getting the movement out,” she said. “There has been a huge increase in the quality of our students’ work and a drop in the amount of missing work. I think the world is changing a lot and kids need to be able to do something different.”

Lambeth fixed the cycling machines at the end of last year, which cost around $150 each. The cost was covered by money from kind people. Not all desks have pedals(踏板)under them, so not all the children have to use one. The school is hoping to get more pedals because of the role cycling machines could play.

The kids clearly love the new “toys”. Sofia Fedele, one of Lambeth’s students, said cycling helped her focus on her work during class. “I usually tap my feet and stuff to keep me focused. I think pedaling is much better. It keeps

me exercising and focused,” she said.

Quinn Spear, another student in Lambeth’s class, also mentioned the good effect on health of cycling during class. He told reporters that he had pedaled 5.5 miles and burned 133 calories, all before 10 am.

A. To prove that he is a nice student.

B. To tell us that he has changed a lot.

C. To show the kids love the cycling machines.

D. To persuade readers to follow his example.

35. What is the best title of this text?

A. The school that Bethany Lambeth works in

My grandchildren, Carter, 9, and Charlie, who’s just 5, Kristye, my wife, and I had been fishing for maybe 30 minutes when lightning flashed overhead. It had been a hot afternoon with a few clouds, and the small port where people often kept boats was packed less than an hour earlier when we started my 15-foot boat toward a series of small islands. But with the lightning, I thought it best to get off the water. Then we sailed back with Kristye and Charlie in the rear(the back part of the boat).

As we moved toward the bay, the storm cloud had grown and the sky became dark. The wind picked up, but we’d had more shelter than I realized before our boat went past the last island, where we were cast into some of the roughest open water I had ever seen. The wind was blowing heavily and waves crashed into the side of the boat. I struggled to turn us into the oncoming wind and waves, completely wet, but held on.

Wave after wave crashed over the bow(the front part of boat), but I didn’t even notice the water rushing past my feet because I was so focused on keeping the boat straight and running. I started to feel frightened. It had been less than 10 minutes, but it felt like we’d been fi ghting the waves much longer. The gas tanks were floating(漂). That was when the engine died. Without the engine, we were being pushed toward a rocky cliff(悬崖). If the boat was turned over by the waves, the next ones would turn us over in the water.

Dear classmates,

As we all know, scribbling on the walls of the scenic spots has some negative effects. It not only leaves dirty marks on the walls, but also harms the image of the tourist attractions. Worse still, it may damage the cultural relics.

While visiting places of interest, we should develop a good habit. We should not scribble on the walls and litter or spit on the ground. Only in this way can we keep the scenic spots clean and tidy.

Let’s take action now!

I got very worried about my family’s safety. Out of power, the boat might crash into the cliff or turn over in the

water. The large waves might flood us as well. I heard Kristye yell from the rear, where she was sitting with Charlie.

I looked back to see Charlie sitting on the floor with water up to his waist. He didn’t seem to understand the danger, and just looked at me expectantly. I could tell Carter was frightened, but he was quiet and held the rail next to me. Fortunately, we were already wearing our life vests.

Luckily, a public patrol boat came to our rescue. I was just about to jump in to pull the boat to shore when I heard a public boat speeding toward us. They were able to drag our boat and beach it nearby. I stayed with my boat, taking water away from it, while the driver of the public boat took Kristye and the boys to the shelter. As they left, Charlie was crying in Kristye’s arms, and I couldn’t help but worry that splitting up was the wrong decision. However, we were reunited an hour later at the police station, where we all shed a few tears.

Unit 1 Living well-Reading MARTY’S STORY Hi, my name is Marry Fielding and I guess you could say that I am "one in a million". In other words, there are not many people like me. You see, I have a muscle disease which makes me very weak, so I can't run or climb stairs as quickly as other people. In addition, sometimes I am very clumsy and drop things or bump into furniture. Unfortunately, the doctors don't know how to make me better, but I am very outgoing and have learned to adapt to my disability. My motto is: live One day at a time. Until I was ten years old I was the same as everyone else. I used to climb trees, swim and play football. In fact, I used to dream about playing professional football and possibly representing my country in the World Cup. Then I started to get weaker and weaker, until I could only enjoy football from a bench at the stadium. In the end I went into hospital for medical tests. I stayed there for nearly three months. I think I had at least a billion tests, including one in which they cut out a piece of muscle from my leg and looked at it under a microscope. Even after all that, no one could give my disease a name and it is difficult to know what the future holds. One problem is that I don't look any different from other people. So sometimes some children in my primary school would laugh, when I got out of breath after running a short way or had to stop and rest halfway up the stairs. Sometimes, too, I was too weak to go to school so my education suffered. Every time I returned after an absence, I felt stupid because I was behind the others. My life is a lot easier at high school because my fellow students have accepted me. The few who cannot see the real person inside my body do not make me annoyed, and I just ignore them. All in all I have a good life. I am happy to have found many things I can do, like writing and computer programming. My ambition is to work for a firm that develops computer software when I grow up. Last year invented a computer football game and a big company has decided to buy it from me. I have a very busy life with no time to sit around feeling sorry for myself. As well as going to the movies and football matches with my friends, I spend a lot of time with my pets. I have two rabbits, a parrot, a tank full of fish and a tortoise. To look after my pets properly takes a lot of time but I find it worthwhile. I also have to do a lot of work, especially if I have been away for a while. In many ways my disability has helped me grow stronger psychologically and become more independent. I have to work hard to live a normal life but it has been worth it. If I had a chance to say one thing to healthy children, it would be this: having a disability does not mean your life is not satisfying. So don't feel sorry for the disabled or make fun of them, and don't ignore them either. Just accept them for who they are, and give them encouragement to live as
