Yong men often give flowers to young women when they are in love. This tradition may have come from Turkey. In the 1700s in Turkey, it was quite popular for people in love to send each other baskets full of strange things. The baskets were delivered secretly to the person who was receiving it. Usually, an old woman who sold flowers or fruit on the street left the basket beside the person’s door.

These baskets included a variety of “gifts”: flowers, stones, feathers, was, and even charcoal. Each thing in the basket had a special meaning. By figuring out (明白) the secret messages contained in each item, the person who received the basket began to understand little by little the true feelings of the person who sent it.

This idea of sending gifts of love with secret meanings quickly spread to Germany, France, and England. However, as time passed, only sending flowers remained popular.

An innocent bunch of flowers told young ladies about the feelings in the hearts of young men. Each different flower held a different meaning. For example, the flowers from an orange tree meant, “You are beautiful and pure”. Pink carnations meant, “My love for you is strong and great”. Yellow roses, on the other hand, meant, “I saw you with someone else”.

Many flower dictionaries were made to help young people in love understand the meaning of the flowers they received. Not all of the dictionaries agreed, how ever, on the meaning of each flower, so a person had to be careful about the flowers they chose to send.

By the 1880s, using flowers to send messages had fallen out of fashion, and the more direct way of sending love letters began. Today, flowers are still considered a lovely gift, but the meaning for each kind of flower has been lost. ( ) 31. Paragraphs 1 to 2 describe the tradition of ______.

( ) 32. What did the items in a basket explain to the receiver?

A. The lady’s looks.

D. The person’s country.

( ) 33. To where did the idea of sending gifts of love spread?

A. To Asia.

C. To Europe. B. To Australia.

D. To North America.

( ) 34. How did people know the meaning of each kind of flower?

A. A dictionary told them.

C. Their parents told them. B. A person in love told them.

D. Their friends told them.

( ) 35. When did the tradition of sending love messages through flowers slow down?

A. In the 1700s.

全国公共英语等级考试四级模拟试题及详解

全国公共英语等级考试四级模拟试题及详解 Advertisers tend to think big and perhaps this is why they’re always ing in for criticism. Their critics seem to resent them because they have a flair for self-promotion and because they have so much money to throw around. ‘It’s iniquitous,’ they say,‘that this entirely unproductive industry if we can call it that should absorb millions of pounds each year. It only goes to show how much profit the big panies are making. Why don’t they stop advertising and reduce the price of their goods? After all,it’s the consumer who pays。’ The poor old consumer! He’d have to pay a great deal more if advertising didn’t create mass markets for products. It is precisely because of the heavy advertising that consumer goods are so cheap. But we get the wrong idea if we think the only purpose of advertising is to sell goods. Another equally important function is to inform. A great deal of the knowledge we have about household goods derives largely from the advertisements we read. Advertisements introduce us to new products or remind us of the existence of ones we already know about. Supposing you wanted to buy a washing machine,it is more than likely you would obtain details regarding performance, price, etc.,from an advertisement.

Beneath each sentence there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Choose one word or phrase that best completes the sentence. 1.______if you had lost your watch? A.Weren’t you upset B.Wouldn’t you be upset C.Hadn’t you been upset D.Wouldn’t you have upset 正确答案:B 解析:该题是语法结构题,考查虚拟语气在错综时间下的用法。在该句中,从句的谓语动词所表示的动作发生在过去,虚拟语气表示与过去事实相反,那么就用had+done形式;主句的谓语动词表示的是现在的状态:着急、不安,虚拟语气表示与现在事实相反,那么就用would/should/could/might+动词原形的形式。因此,根据题意和语法规则,选项B为最佳答案。知识模块:语法与词汇 2.Confronted with the absolute proof, he admitted______an old woman of seventy who was crossing the street. A.to run over and injure B.to have run over and injured C.running over and injuring D.having run over and injured and连接run over和injured两个动词。因此,根据题意和语法规则,选项D为最佳答案。知识模块:语法与词汇 3.It is no good______to come now. He is busy at the moment to deal with other urgent things. A.asking him B.that you ask him C.to ask him
