Unit 1

Good communication is the key to success when learning online. You should take the opportunity to get to know your teacher and classmates through email and by participating in Internet discussions. This will lead to a more positive and rewarding learning experience.

It?s true that learning the technology needed to take part in a class can at times be frustrating. For example , you may need to ask how to post your assignment on the Web. But , don? t worry ! If you have a problem ,ask for help. Th ere?s no such thing as a stupid question , so there is no need to be intimidated or embarrassed. Sharing insights and answers freely is what makes the Internet such a great medium for learning.

Online classroom teacher Mike Roberts was asked about what he thought the greatest benefit of online learning is. “As a teacher , I need the students to ask questions so that I know what areas of my lessons need further explanation. That?s what is great about teaching and learning over the Internet. In an ordinary classroom , time is limited , so students seem to ask the minimum amount of questions possible. But in the virtual classroom , students are always asking questions. They really seem to feel comfortable asking me for the information that they need. They also share a lot of valuable ideas with each other in a way that you don?t usually see in a regular classroom.”

Unit 2

I have to write to you about the way you dress. I was a little intimidated to comment in person , so I am writing instead. I hope this doesn?t upset you , but something has to be done. I must appeal to you to start dressing like a mom.

Your unique sense of fashion is more like a sister?s than a mother?s. Personally , it?s embarrassing to have a mom who dresses younger than I do. You wear T-shirts with torn jeans and your nose is pierced. My friends say it?s strange , but I think they?re being a little too negative. It?s most likely because their boyfriends think you are pretty. Still , if you want me to have any friends in this community , it is vital that you remove the ring from your nose and start dressing like the other moms. Don?t your peers ever show any concern?

Don?t you remember how horrible being a teenager can be ? I feel awful because I think people of my age would rather tale to you than to me. Last week at the shopping center , I had the absolutely worst experience of my life. The young man who took our money asked if you were my older sister. I thought he would likely ask you out if I hadn?t said “Thanks , mom” to you. It was disgusting.

Unit 3

Some people just can?t keep from giving. That was the way it was with my neighbor. Despite being crippled , she was very active. In fact ,

she seemed to do more for the community every day than I ever do in a year?s time. I was always amazed at the pace she kept. On Mondays and Fridays , she worked at a college giving students guidance on what career to choose. On Tuesdays and Thursdays she helped out at a church that gave aid to people without homes. And on the weekends , she taught local kids who needed extra help with their schoolwork. And most importantly , she always had a positive attitude. I don?t remember once hearing her complain about her troubles. The stresses of everyday life never seemed to bother her. Instead , she looked for every occasion she could find to spread her good humor around. I remember when I had just lost my job. She took a day off from work to spend time with me and listen to my friends. She never once became impatient with my complaints. She never acted like there was anything in this world more important than what I had to say.

What I regret now is not having ever really done anything for her. I suppose she never needed it.

Unit 4

“So , how about your interview?”

“The whole thing was bad from the beginning. I entered the room with confidence and gave the woman a strong handshake. She said I squeezed too hard and hurt her. I had a real hard time communicating with her after that.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well , it was pretty apparent that I failed to persuade her to hire me.

I tried to make eye contact with her , but she kept looking away , which made me think she wasn?t very focused or interested in what I was saying.”

“I know what you mean. It can be so stressful being interviewed for a job. It?s very depressing when you don?t get any encouragement from the person who is asking you questions. But , don?t worry. I …m sure you made a better impression than what you think.”

“I don?t think I impressed her at all. I was really bothered that she kept looking away , only interrupting me once in a while to throw in a word or two. I had to get her attention by making big gestures and changing the tone of my voice. I don?t think I have ever had such a horrible experience.”

Unit 5

AIDS has emerged as the world?s biggest problem over the past 25 years. The epidemic has touched the lives of people around the world , but no other place has been plagued like Africa. In Africa 20 million people were infected with the disease in 1999. That number continues to grow. Africa has accounted for nearly four out of five AIDS related deaths in the world. It is estimated that as of 1999 , 13 million children had lost their parents to AIDS. Although there is no cure , people in more developed

countries can get medicine to help. In Africa though , most do not have access to new medicines. Most people neglect going to the doctor to find out if they have the disease. Because they have not been diagnosed with the illness , they continue to spread the disease without knowing it. Many men leave their rural homes to find work. This threatens many people when the workers have AIDS and their behavior is not safe.

In response to this crisis , many groups have set up programs. The goal is to educate people about AIDS. It is difficult to implement such programs , though , because of poor literacy rates. Some education programs have worked , though. One such project combats people?s fear of getting tested for AIDS. Other campaigns focus on schooling for the poor.

Unit 7

When we stepped out of our front door last evening , something seemed different. I had this unusual feeling that something bad was going to happen. Our neighborhood isn?t the kind of place where you would except to get robbed , but I guess you never know.

My husband and I were walking across our lawn to our parked car when a man leaped from behind our bushes. The man pointed a gun at my husband and demanded that we give him our money. We of course did so , and then begged for mercy from him. He told us to get on our knees and then he shoved my husband?s forehead into the dirt. He then grabbed my

watch off my wrist and told me to lie down and close my eyes. I did not know if we were going to survive. Then I heard his footsteps fade away into the darkness , I went to the police , but I could n?t identify the man because he was wearing a stocking over his head. They admitted that they probably wouldn?t be able to do anything about it.

Of course , we can afford to lose the money. I can find a replacement for the watch he took. What bothers me though , is how scared it made me to even go out in my own yard. I hate this feeling of fear.

Unit 8

Upon seeing an apple fall while walking , Isaac Newton was struck with an idea. His new concept was that the same force that pulled the apple to the ground guides the room. This simple story about Newton exemplifies what makes a great mind. Great minds like Newton just seem to be always open to new ideas. It is almost automatic for them. A bright idea often occurs to them even when it seems very odd. They understand with certainty that there is logic to be found even within the most unusual idea. Then they hold onto the idea. They turn it over and over in their mind until that element of logic reveals itself. This process involves combining what you know with what you experience in the world around you. In contrast , many very smart people have labored over one great idea throughout their lives. In the end though , they are unable to unlock the mystery of what it takes to be a genius. What is it that they have omitted in

their search? They have simply forgotten to observe the new combinations being formed in the unconscious. They have employed only their conscious mind without giving time for their unconscious mind to provide the answers. This is particularly true of those who work too hard. They might be well advised to take a little walk every once in a while.

Unit 10

What?s more important to you , money , a comfortable life , or self-respect? Many people believe that we are living in an age where values are in decline. They say that a standard for morality has been replaced by self-interest. Some people even predict the people of this earth will soon be punished and that disasters will destroy much of the civilization today. Most disagree with such conclusions , but they do think that it is time to stop our excessive ways.

A non-religious woman from California commented , “I do believe that a moral compass should guide our actions. We share this planet and we need to keep the values like integrity and treat each other with respect. There is a significant need for each inhabitant of this world to take a good look at how they are behaving.

Another man from New York said , “It?s not enough to be a good person in your heart. We have to demonstrate our good intentions through our actions. There is plenty of temptation out there. It often causes people to give in to convenience instead of doing what is right. I have faith that if

people just start following their conscience instead of what?s easy , things will improve. We are all going to be faced with some tough decisions. I think we?re ready for the challenge ,though.”

完型填空

I, for one, am from ready to use online courses for my learning. Don’t get me wrong. I am very happy about all the communication and learning opportunities the courses have given us. But for me those opportunities should not be used to replace classroom activities. In other words, they are only tools to help me learn what has already been served in the classroom.

I love the classroom. I love classmates. There are forty students in my class right now, and I think it’s great. I even love having classmates who are better than me. And, let’s not forget the smell of ink on paper , the sound of chalk on a blackboard, the hardness of a wooden bench or the heat inside the classroom in early September. I love it all. But most of all,I love having a teacher—a “real live”teacher. I get excited when I am in the classroom with a good teacher. I learn in a way that has been proven to work. I am given insight not only into a certain subject, but also into the world.

What makes having a classroom teacher so special? A good teacher pushes me to succeed. A good teacher rewards me with praise when I have done well and stays positive and gives me hope when I am down .I don’t

believe that a teacher using a virtual classroom can .reach out to me in the same way. A teacher communicating.through the Internet cannot share the same type of relation a classroom teacher and student share.

I guess that I am lucky to have had access to so many excellent classroom teachers. I will never forget the kindness and commitment that those teachers have shown me. Their examples make it hard for me to accept away of learning that does not include them. You can call me “old-fashioned”,but as long as there is a classroom, that’s where I will be learning.

UNIT 2

I’m not sure whether a “generation”exists, but if it_does_,I hope I’m still standing on the youth’s of the gap.I may be 50and then some, but I still like to rock. When I was_younger_,I listened to all of the new rock and roll music, and I really got into it.But ,unlike a lot of my friends_who_ decided that good music died after the 1970s,I_kept_on listening to aswell as rocking to new and unique music.I have to_admit_that rock and roll has

changed since I was a teenager, but it is_still_about using rhythm to express felling.

Some of the changes have been very positive._Advances_ in technology have made personal recording simple and given us access_to _music on the Internet._Nowadays_,you can’t throw a stone without hitting someone that has made their own CD.You don’t have to just listen to music made and sold by big record companies. Many groups send their music_straight _to community radio station. This _allows for_truly new music to be heard that record companies have never even touched.I play drum for one_such_group myself.

My daughter is an_actual_teenager and she is thoroughly disgusted by my listening to and playing,as she puts it, “those_awful_tunes.”Classical music and playing the piano_appeal _to her.She pretends to show concern by making comments like, “You should turn that stuff down or you will hurt you rears,”but I know what she is really_trying_to say is that she finds my music absolutely offensive and does not have _patience _for it.I don’t get too upset, though. And I don’t worry about my music having a(n) negative influence on her.In any case, she is probably right about my ears;I likely have lost some hearing from going to too many loud concerts as I have. I can’t say that it wasn?t worth it,though. If I had to do it all over again I would do it all the same except I would protect my ears better.

UNIT 3

Do not put off until tomorrow the good you can do today. There are so ma ny possibilities that can get in the way of a good or great deed. Examples of people who missed out on good opportunities are everywhere, and when it is too late, they regret missing their chance to have been of service. Sa ying “tomorrow” just instead of doing some good may lead to a habit of saying “tomorrow”, and tomorrow may never come. One delay is follo wed by another, and matters get out of hand quickly, even when attempts a re made to correct them.

Therefore, we must take things on as soon as we see them. This is the secret

_ to progress and success. One good deed can awaken_ us to new and grea ter opportunities to help those around us, and thus, make our life richer. O ne good turn leads to another, and thus, the good is made larger. Once_so mething great has been achieved, we are free to set our sights on the next opportunity to help that_arise. Each new oppo rtunity may be bigger and better than last. And so, I urge you to use all you r efforts to do what good you can today _instead of tomorrow.

Do not spend your time with things that are neither good nor_ valuable. This will save you from mistake. If you are given a task that

you do not believe is helpful, delay_it. Time will wash it away for you. At the same time, the beginnings of something positive will have built up. Do it at once! A kind word, or a(n) service to others is never a waste of your time, and you will reap the benefits _ of good and enjoy peace of mind.

(4)Standing in the door of Mr Murphy?s office ,I could see he was learned on something he was reading. He had both elbow on his desk, his head was resting on one hand and his other hand was cupped about his mouth. I knew that he was keeping his office hours and that student participation was encouraged ,but all the same , I was afraid to approach .Then ,as I turned to leave , my foot banged against the bottom of the door ,startling me and causing the professor to look up. His eyes had simply moved from the desk to me, but the rest of his physical body remained the same .He invited me in without gesture, just a “Come in. What is it that you need?”There was little if any warmth or tone in his voice; it wasn?t exactly encouragement Despite being intimidated, I made a conscious effort to relax and persuaded myself to smile and enter the room. “Mr.Murphy ,”the pitch of my voice rose as I begin my introduction I am sorry to interrupt .my name is Peter . I am in your second-period English class. “Peter did you say it was?”he replied. His reaction disappointed me. It was apparent that I had not made much of an impression with the

presentation I made in class last week. he said my name as if he would not have remembered it without my having stated it for him first –as though he were no more impressed than if he had encountered a beggar on the street He continued ,”Do you have something you want to discuss with me , or do you just stop by to visit ?

In fact, I had stopped by to visit, but I was no longer feeling up to it and was looking for a fast exit . It seemed that the invitation he had extend in class ,” Drop by my office for a visit anytime .My door is always open .”was just a(n) empty gesture probably required by the school. I reach inside my bag and pulled out my English language textbook. I figured I can ask him a quick question rather than try to have a meaningful conversation.

When they gave us our first sex education lecture, AIDS was not part of the speech. It was 1981, and although there might have been a couple of news stories about a new disease, AIDS wasn?t a real concern yet. Over the next couple of years, news stories about AIDS became very common, however, they did not provide very much helpful information.Rather ,the media was happy to report stories that confirmed whatever racial or sexual prejudices we may have had. There were stories about monkeys in

Africa were the source of the disease and it was most commonly believed that only sex between two men could spread the disease. The understanding was that the only protective steps someone would need to take were to stay away from gay(同性恋的) men and monkeys. This lack of serious information and education about the disease led to prejudice and unsafe sexual behavior by many.

By the time I reached college, the cat was out of the bag, men and women having sex together could also be infected with the disease. Sex education had taken on a more serious meaning; now it was about protecting yourself from disease. Still the prejudices remained. Although common contact between individuals including kissing was considered safe, most were afraid to come in contact with others who had AIDS. It is commonly believed that prejudice kept the government from acting more quickly to offer better education and do scientifiC. Since that time, education and funding for research has improved, but prejudice and misinformation cost us a lot of time in getting started.

(6)Let?s face it ; young people entering the workforce today are lazy. I have heard just about as much complaint about today?s workplace I can take Contrary to the view young people seem to have that things were

better for prior generations, the fact is that there have never been so many greats job for people wanting to enter the workforce. There are educational opportunities that have never exist before , and the standard of living is getting better all the time. Frankly, people who lack courage and commitment shouldn?t blame anyone but themselves for not taking the opportunities that are there for them.

My first job was working as a trashman . I hauled trash for six years before I got promoted to the position of manager. I wasn?t scared of hard work. By the time the day was finished , my shoulder would hurt ,but I never complainted I even assisted others and worked extra hours when I was needed .Unfortunately , young people today seem to be lacking the same desire I had to work hard.

I can boast that I never quit a job without being offered a better one. We can?t all start out at the top. Most of us need to pay out dues and work from the bottom up. After managing the small company for which I hauled garbage I found a job with the city public works office managing a small department. Now ,after 25 years of working in the garbage business , I manage all of the city?s trash removal. Along the way I learned that a job well done is never looked down on, and the person who does it will always triumph.

Where is the “can do”attitude that makes our country great ? It doesn?t matter what you do, as long as you work hard and do your best .Young

people need to commence with finding a line of employment that needs them , and quit looking for perfection in their initial position. If work were supposed to be enjoyable, it wouldn?t be called “work”.

Unit7

I was walking from the door of my apartment building to the corner store. All of a sudden, a slight man wearing a stocking cap leaped from behind a parked car and stuck a pistol, or at least what I thought was a gun, into my side. My heart beat fast, and I became very light-headed. It was as if just as I was in a dream and my body was not attached to my brain.Instinctively , I raised my hands in the air, though he didn't tell me to do so or say anything at all; he just reached around and searched the back pocket of my trousers for anything valuable

The next thing I knew was he was gone, and so also so too was my wallet. And then I just stood there with my heart pounding and my head spinning (头晕) for what that what which seemed to be an eternity. I heard the footsteps and the cough of a man walking past, which then faded fell dis appeared faded away. I became more conscious of where I was, and then, all at once, I could feel my legs trembling . I moved sideways to the steps of

the closest building and sat down.

Other victims may have felt angry or frightened, but I was just confused. I hadn't been hurt or even hit. He wanted my money, so he took my money and left. There was no "Give me your money or I'll shoot" like in the movies. He was fast, he was silent, and he was gone. I tried to remember the details of what had just happened, but it all happened so fast that it seemed to have not happened at all. I wasn't even sure if the man had a gun or not. I wouldn't be able to identify the offender even if he were standing right in front of me.

A few minutes later, I called and reported the robbery to the police operator. An officer called me back after an hour for additional details. He asked me if there was anything unusual about the man who had robbed me, but I couldn't accurately describe the man.

The next day, I went to the police station and looked through albums of photos of criminals who had committed similar robberies. Apparently, there had been several similar robberies in my neighborhood in the past couple of weeks by a man who had an odd hat. I didn't remember a hat, and I was unable to identify

the man who robbed me.

Unit8

I think I am like many people in that I have better ideas in my sleep than when I am awake. And, like most people, I have a hard time dragged myself from my bed or even rolling over to write some of what I have dreamt in a notebook that I have left on the nightstand. I have often tried but most of the time I am unable to do justice to my dream. The dream is always more detailed than what I write down .Dreams are like water ; the different parts of your conscious brain just seem to flow together into strange stories.

I have a hard time explaining why things in my dreams happen. Why is there a dog in a pink dress running up the stairs in a church I’ve never been in before ? why do I often fly in my dreams, as though I am driving a car that does not exist, in a sitting position only a few feet from the ground? The following is an even greater mystery; why do dreams feel so real when I am dreaming and shortly after I wake up , but make less sense the longer I am awake? Sometimes my dreams really tell a story and I am completely entertained. I say to myself right after I wake up, ‖Wow , that would make a great movie .‖ I try to hold

on to the story, but it isn’t easy .As soon as I get a chance ,I tell the story to the next person I see . I am always surprised when they are not impressed. They say something like, ‖Well, I’m sure it was very meaningful for you.‖ Either I have failed to capture the dream with my words, or the dream is only important to me , I guess we are all seeking a little meaning in our dreams : some deep dark secret we have hidden in our subconscious or a recipe for our own happiness. It would make our task a lot easier, though, if there were a better way to record them.

unit9

In a lecture to the student body, Professor Warrick introduced a new method of study. Calling this method fantastic, he said that it would give students an advantage over their classmates. He also claimed it would help in unlocking their true potential. When the lecture was over, students applauded the professor. So it?s obvious that they were convinced, Whether they should believe in what Warrick had to say, however, is worth investigating.

Warrick says that the mysterious forces of excellence are within every individual. These forces, he says, can be freed through the right efforts. That is, if students tune their concentration through certain mental exercises, they can improve performance on their schoolwork. These

exercises include such activities as listening to special music while sleeping. He also suggests vitamins. Everything neccessary is sold by Warrick himself.

As one can imagine, Warrick has profited greatly by selling products to hopeful students. Already, he has made millions of dollars. And his lecture tours have made him a national hero. This wouldn?t be bad if he was actually assisting students. If students were reaching the peaks he promised, there wouldn?t be a problem. After some analysis, however, one can see that this is not the case. follow-up studies of students who have used Warrick?s methods have been done. Three studies show his methods have no effect whatsoever. Performance is not enhanced by his methods. Few students are aware of this, however.

Unit10

Is integrity fashionable? Is a strong feel of morality something that we presently desire? What would it cost to tempt a person to sell out their conscience? Many experts on group behavior are posing tough questions to find out where as a group our inner compass is pointing.

If the bank put $1,000 in your account by mistake, would you keep it or tell the bank? If you were given by mistake a better grade on your report card than you earned, would you tell the school or would you keep quiet and keep the better mark? It is interesting because almost everyone said
