Where did the word “hello”come from? The American inventor(发明家), Thomas Edison, is believed（相信）to be the first person to use “hello” in the late 19th century, just after he invented the telephone.

At first, people greeted each other on the telephone(电话) with “Are you there?” They were not sure the new thing could really carry voices（声音）. But Edison was sure. So the first time he picked（拿起）up the telephone he did not say “Are you there?”, he just said “hello!”

From then on, the word “hello” became widely （广泛地）used in America.

Americans are very direct(直接的) people. When we want something we say “yes”and when we don’t，we say“no”. If we want something different from what is offered（提供）, we ask for it. Here’s an example. Suppose（假设）I arrive at someone's house and he offers me beer．I don't want beer．Maybe I don't like it or maybe I just don't feel like it．I will say“No，thanks．”If everyone around me is drinking something，I would want to be sociable and would therefore ask for something else（别的）．“No，thanks．But I'll have a bit of tea or coke if you have some．”If I do want beer, I simply say “Yes，thank you．”Unless(除非) they happen to be familiar（熟悉的）with Chinese customs，westerners（西方人）will not ask you again and again after you have said you don't want it．In fact, if you say “no”when you real1y（真正地）want something to drink or eat, you may find yourself（你自己）very thirsty（口渴）or hungry．
