Personal Statement
My name is xxx, majoring in bridge engineering. Because of my enthusiasm about bridge seismic, I choose this professional direction in my master study. I plan to join joint training program of Tongji University and UC Berkeley. In this personal statement, I want to introduce a boy with strong curiosity, autonomous learning ability and ambition.
My interest in earthquake engineering can be traced back to my experience during youth.In 2008, a magnitude 8.0 earthquake struck Wenchuan. The earthquake caused huge casualties and property losses. It regrettably turned out that the design of many structures was seriously flawed, which drew intense media attention nationwide. As experts continue to help the court determine who is responsible, I have been awed by this drama and generate great desire to do some research in earthquake resistance.
I entered the civil engineering major of Central South University through the college entrance examination in 2013.To summarize the 4 years of my college life, I would use diligence and efficiency. In the past 4 years，I got an excellent grade through my diligence. Working hard on every subject not only help me to receive good marks, but also enable me to achieve high performance in mechanics, mathematics and other areas. High efficiency guarantees me enough time to live a rich and colorful college life. And it also makes me have energy to do more challenging works. Together with the other three members, I completed a national innovation training project in the field of bridge seismic.
Now I am studying in Tongji University, the best institution for civil engineering in China, for another 3 years and I’m due to get the master degree in 2020, when I will be better armed. For one year at this university, I received strict and thorough training in areas such as building structures, building materials. Soil mechanics and foundation, concrete and masonry structures, construction, steel structure and earthquake resistant structure. I also took every opportunity to participate in cooperation work and projects commissioned by construction and design companies. Thanks to the guidance of graduate tutors and the help of my schoolmates, I have already cast 2 papers in domestic journals. As a developing country, China has much to learn in the area of seismic design of bridges. To realize my dream of becoming an expert and leader in civil engineering, I must develop international vision and learn from advanced design and construction experience abroad.
In summary, I’m an optimistic and passionate student who always insists on doing what he likes. Once I set up a goal, I would try my best to achieve it regardless of any difficulty. The cutting-edge developments in theoretical research and the practical applications of civil engineering technologies available at UC Berkeley offer me the best opportunity to continue my professional development, and I sincerely hope that you will allow me to learn from your esteemed academic environment while I also strive to make my own unique contributions to both your program and your outstanding university.
