What is a dream?

For centuries, people have wondered about the strange places that they seem to visit in their sleep.

1 However,

they have been valued as necessary to a person's health and happiness.

Historically people thought dreams contained messages from God. It was only in the twentieth century that people

started to study dreams scientifically believing that they tell about a person's character. 2 He believed that dreams

allow a person to express fantasies or fears, which would be socially unacceptable in real life.

The second theory to become popular was Carl Jung's compensation theory. Jung, a former student of Freud, said that

the purpose of a dream is not to hide something, but rather to communicate it to the dreamer. 3 Thus, people who

think too highly of themselves may dream about falling; those who think too little of themselves dream of being

heroes.

Using more recent research, William Domhoff from the University of California found that dreaming is a mental skill

that needs time to develop in humans. , 4 Until they reach age five, they can not express very well what their

dreams are about. Once people become adults, there is little or no change in their dreams. The dreams of men and

women differ. For instance,

The characters that appear in the dreams of men are often other men, and often involve physical aggression.

The meaning of dreams continues to be difficult to understand. 5 If you dream that a loved one is going to die, do

not panic. The dream may have meaning, but it does not mean that your loved one is going to die. A.Dreams make up for what is lacking in waking life.

Can Anger Be an Illness?

Many strong and out of control emotions (情绪) are recognized as an illness. People who are always very sad have

depression; those who worry a lot have anxiety.

But what about anger problems? Anger is largely viewed as a secondary emotion one caused by other emotions. People

are thought to be angry because they are sad, anxious or stressed. __1 __ Today, though, a growing number of mental

health experts think that anger is a serious problem that needs its own treatment.

How to tell the difference between “normal”anger and “anger problem”is difficult. After all, everyone gets really mad

from time to time. Experts point out a few ways.

Disordered anger, as it is sometimes called, tends to be of greater intensity (强度). __2 __ An example: while most

people would get upset if a driver cut them off, someone with disordered anger might try to chase down

force it off the road.

And in cases of disordered anger, the person gets angry more frequently and his/her anger lasts longer. __3 __ But

people with anger problems often stay angry for days, weeks or even years; their feelings of anger don't disappear over

time.

__4 __ Disordered anger often damages people's lives. “It interferes (干扰) with people' s relationships and their jobs,”

says Raymond Chip Tafrate, a US psychologist. “Even their health is affected.”

Anger clearly increases the risk of certain health problems, as many studies have shown. When people are angry, their

heart beats faster and their blood pressure goes up. __5 __

页 3 第

Experts suggest that people with an anger problem take anger management programs. The programs teach people to

control their responses to stressful situations through the use of relaxation techniques. The programs sometimes include

life skills training as well: increasing someone's level of competence, whether on the job or as a parent or partner, helps

bring down stress and cut angry feelings.

A. Anger takes away people's joy in life.

B. Consequences are also important to consider.

C. The anger buried inside him rises to the surface.

D. For most people, angry feelings disappear quickly.

E. Over time, these changes have bad effects on the body.

The speed and convenience of modern travel means that destinations that used to take a long time to travel to can now

be reached quickly and easily. Even though”faraway”countries may now seem closer thanks to air travel, they may

still be different from your home country. 1 Following are some fundamental rules that will make communication

easier, and your trip more enjoyable.

2 If you don not know the word for something in local language, or can not make yourself understood verbally,

try drawing a picture, or pointing to an object.

Avoid topics of conversation that you think may be sensitive. 3 .Feel free to show interest in the history and

customs of the place you are visiting, but don't ask too many questions about why things are done a certain way; you

may offend the local people.

4 Kissing on the street or in public places is unacceptable behavior and should be avoided. If you are unsure of

how to behave, watch the local people and copy them---if they don't behave in a certain way, you probably shouldn't

either.

Finally, if you are traveling on business, or plan to stay with a host to family, and you wish to take a gift, do some

research. 5 . One of the easiest ways to offend somebody is to give the wrong gift. Wherever you go in the world, always be tolerant of the local customs. Avoid being critical; try instead

to show respect

for the values of the country you are in, even if you do not necessarily agree with them

A. Keep in mind that in many cultures, display affection in public is considered taboo.

B. Consider the main lifestyle of the country you plan to visit.

C. Never raise your voice in order to make yourself understood.

F. The opening of gifts is also treated very differently around the world.

G. Therefore, it is important to adapt your behavior not to offend the local people.

Safety in the highway is not totally out of our hands. Here are four ways we can protect ourselves when we travel.

2 People in small cars are injured more often and more severely than people traveling in large cars. Factories of

small cars are strengthening their products' safety, which helps. But the mix of large cars and small cars on the road is

the main reason of the problem.

页 5 第

Being thrown into glass and metal car parts, or being thrown from the car can really hurt or even kill you. 3 The

safety belt's main purpose is to pull you back if your car has a sudden crash with another vehicle or object, or if it rolls

over. A belt can reduce the chance of deadly injury by 45% and the chance of serious injury by 50%. Air bags are important. More than half of all new cars sold have air bags. Air bags provide protection in frontal crashes

—the type of crash that kills the most drivers —when they are also wearing safety belts. Most people are demanding

air bags in the cars they buy. 4 Effective as they are, they can't take the place of safety belts.

Drunk driving crashes are less likely to happen if you don't drink. 5 Many people have realized that drunk driving

can lead to death and injury, prison time and other results. There are movements to strengthen penalties (处罚)for

drinking and driving.

A. How to drive safely?

B. You are safer in a large car.

C. How to protect ourselves in the highway?

D. Air bags are not installed in all cars.

F. Drunk driving is the most serious problem.

G. But the protection provided by air bags is limited in side or rear crashes.

高考英语阅读专题练习七选五 Muzak The next time you go into a bank, a store, or a supermarket, stop and listen. What do you hear? 71 It's similar to the music you listen to, but it's not exactly the same. That's because this music was especially designed to relax you, or to give you extra energy. Sometimes you don't even realize the music is playing, but you react to the music anyway. Quiet background music used to be called "elevator (电梯) music" because we often heard it in elevators. But lately we hear it in more and more places, and it has a new name "Muzak". About one-third of the people in America listen to "Muzak" everyday. The music plays for 15 minutes at a time, with short pauses in between. It is always more lively between ten and eleven in the morning, and between three and four in the afternoon, when people are more tired. 72 If you listen to Muzak carefully, you will probably recognize the names of many of the songs. Some musicians or songwriters don't want their songs to be used as Muzak, but others are happy when their songs are chosen. Why? 73 Music is often played in public places because it is designed to make people feel less lonely when they are in an airport or a hotel. It has been proven that Muzak doeswhat it is designed to do. Tired office workers suddenly have more energy when they hear the pleasant sound of Muzak in the background. 74 Supermarket shoppers buy 38 percent more groceries. 75 . They say it's boring to hear the same songs all the time. But other people enjoy hearing Muzak in public places. They say it helps them relax and feel calm. To a certain degree, it’s a matter of logic(逻辑)—of being able to spot weaknesses in other people’s argument and to avoid them in your own, it also includes related skills such as distinguishing fact from opinion and assessing the soundness of evidence. In the broad sense, critical thinking is focused, organized thinking—the ability to see clearly their relationships among ideas. 71 The greatest thinkers, scientists and inventors have often taken their information that was readily available and put it together differently to produce new ideas that, too, is critical thinking. 72 As the class goes on, for example, you will probably spend a good deal of time organizing your speeches. While this may seem like a purely mechanical(机械的) exercise, it is closely connected with critical thinking. If the structure of your speech is loose and confused, chances are that your thinking is also disordered and confused. If, on the other hand, the structure is clear, there is a good chance your thinking is too. Organizing a speech is not a matter ofarranging the ideas you already have. 73 What is true of organization is true of many aspects of public speaking. 74 As you work on expressing your ideas in clear, accurate language, you will improve your ability to think clearly and accurately. 75 As you learn to listen critically to speeches in class. You will be better able to assess the ideas of speakers in a variety of situations. If you take full advantage of your speech class, you will be able to develop your skills as critical thinker in many circumstances. This is one reason public speaking has been regarded as a vital part of education since the days of ancient Greece. A. Rather, it is an important part of shaping the ideas themselves. B. This may seem like a lot of time, but the rewards are well worth it. C. It may also help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech. D. It has often been said that there are few new ideas in the world, only reorganized ideas. E. If you are wondering what this has to do with your public speaking class, the answer is quite a lot. F. The skills you learn in your speech class can help you become a more effective thinker in a number of ways. G. As you study the role of evidence and reasoning in speechmaking ,you will see how they can be used in other forms of communication as well. Jennifer Freed, a co-director of a teen program, has another explanation. But if you don’t have emotional (情感的) intelligence, you won’t be as successful in work or in your love life,” she says. What’s the best way to up your EQ (情商)? For starters, let down your guard and really listen to others. __75__ To really develop empathy, you’d better volunteer at a nursing home or a hospital, join a club or a team that has a diverse membership, have a “sharing circle” with your family, or spend time caring for pets at an animal shelter. A.Everyone is different, and levels of empathy differ from person to person. B.That could be because so many people have replaced face time with screen time, the researchers said.
