第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

A

Flying for a long time, you finally arrive at the place where you can relax—your hotel room. Now you throw your bag on the bed, turn on the TV and watch an international news programme on a satellite channel probably from UK or the USA.

The main international broadcasters are BBC World and CNN. With an audience of over 1.5 billion people, these are popular channels that offer good-quality news programmes. In both companies, the journalists are experienced writers that produce journalism of a high standard.

However, there are alternative news channels which people watch because they want a less traditional or non-Western view on world events. Russia Today and Al Jazeera International, an Arabic company, are international channels that broadcast in English. Both companies say they give a fresh view on big stories, and their experienced journalists often report from places where Western journalists do not work, and so they give us stories that we don’t normally see.

The Internet offers more variety. OneWorldTV is an Internet site where you can find stories about the developing world and human rights, rather than the usual stories about US politics and business. The writers for this company are often local people who write the stories for free. This non-professional journalism is increasing, and it certainly offers more choices.

This increase in citizen journalism means that you can write the news, too. Main news broadcasters often use photographs and stories that members of the general public send to them, especially when there is a dramatic breaking news story. Besides this, some blogs are popular sources of news, and the website NowPublic lets you write stories using information you can get from anywhere, including sites like Youtube, Flickr and Twitter.

If you ask most people what water tastes like, they’ll probably tell you that water has no taste and they may give you a funny look. But if you were a fruit fly, asking another fruit fly, that question might have a different answer.

To a fruit fly, water has a taste. Scientists want to know how the fruit fly knows water because this information may help in learning how other animals — or even individual cells — manage to use water in the right way. Water is vital to life, but too much or too little can be deadly to a living creature. So by understanding how the fruit fly tastes water, researchers may learn more about other living things.

According to the new study, a protein(蛋白质) called PPK28 makes it possible for a fly to taste water. Proteins build cells and tissues, fight disease and carry messages between cells. It’s not surprising that a protein is responsible for the fruit fly’s ability to taste water.

The PPK28 protein is part of a larger family of similar proteins. One of these related proteins is used by mammals (including humans) to taste salt. Scientists have not found a protein that enables humans to “taste” water.

In the experiment, Cameron and his team compared normal fruit flies with fruit flies whose taste cells had been disabled. The fruit flies were given a special chemical that would glow(发光) when the fly used the PPK28 protein. Then the scientists led the flies to water. When the normal flies tasted the water, the PPK28 protein lit up — showing that it was in use.

The fruit fly in particular is so interesting that some scientists are hard at work creating a complete map of the fruit fly brain. This map will show all of a fly’s neurons and help scientists understand how the neurons work together.

4. How do most people feel when asked the taste of water?

A. Amused.

B. Frightened.

C. Disappointed.

D. Disgusted.

5. Why do scientists want to know how the fruit fly knows water?

A. To decrease the number of the fruit fly.

B. To know more about other creatures.

C. To manage to use water correctly.

D. To describe the taste of water.

6. What do we know about the PPk28 protein?

A. It can make humans taste salt.

B. The fruit fly can’t live without it.

C. It enables the fruit fly to taste water.

D. The fruit fly uses it to avoid illnesses.

7. What will the scientists continue to work at?

A. S tudying the fruit fly’s neuron systems.

B. Telling more information about cells.

C. Creating maps of human brains.

D. Making the PPk28 protein.

C

Recently I attended several meetings where we talked about ways to retain students and keep younger faculty members from going elsewhere.

It seems higher education has become an industry of meeting-holders whose task it is to “solve” problems—real or imagined. And in my position as a professor at three different colleges, the actual problems in educating our young people and older students have deepened, while the number of people hired—not to teach but to hold meetings—has increased significantly. Every new problem creates a new job for an administrative fixer. Take our Center for Teaching Excellence. Contrary to its title, the center is a clearing house(信息交流中心)for using technology in classrooms and in online courses. It’s an administrative sham(欺诈)of the kind that has multiplied over the last 30 years.

I offer a simple proposition in response: Many of our problems—class attendance, educational success, student happiness and well-being—might be improved by cutting down the bureaucratic(官僚

的)mechanisms and meetings and instead hiring an army of good teachers. If we replaced half of our administrative staff with classroom teachers, we might actually get a majority of our classes back to 20 or fewer students per teacher. This would be an environment in which teachers and students actually knew each other.

The teachers must be free to teach in their own way—the curriculum should be flexible enough so that they can use their individual talents to achieve the goals of the course. Additionally, they should be allowed to teach, and be rewarded for doing it well. Teachers are not people who are great at and consumed by research and happen to appear in a classroom. Good teaching and research are not exclusive, but they are also not automatic companions. Teaching is an art and a craft, talent and practice; it is not something that just anyone can be good at. It is utterly confusing to me that people do not recognize this, despite the fact that pretty much anyone who has been a student can tell the difference between their best and worst teachers.

8.What does the author say about present-day universities?

A)They are effectively tackling real or imagined problems.

B)They often fail to combine teaching with research.

C)They are over-burdened with administrative staff.

D)They lack talent to fix their deepening problems.

9.What does the author imply about the classes at present?

A)T hey facilitate students’ independent learning.B)They help students form closer relationships.

C)They have more older students than before. D)They are much bigger than is desirable.

10.What does the author think of teaching ability?

A)It requires talent and practice. B)It is closely related to research.

C)It is a chief factor affecting students’ learning.D)It can be acquired through persistent practice.

11.What is the author’s suggestion for improving university teaching?

A)Creating an environment for teachers to share their teaching experiences.

B)Hiring more classroom teachers and allowing them to teach in their own way.

C)Using high technology in classrooms and promoting exchange of information.

D)Cutting down meetings and encouraging administrative staff to go to classrooms.

D

As any plane passenger will confirm, a crying baby is almost impossible to ignore, no matter how hard you try. Now scientists believe they may have worked out why. A baby’s cry pulls at the heartstrings(扣人心弦) in a way while othe r cries don’t, researchers found.

Researchers found that a baby’s cry can trigger unique emotional responses in the brain, making it impossible for us to ignore them---whether we are parents or not. Other types of cries, including calls of animals in great pain, fail to get the same response---suggesting the brain is programmed to respond specifically to a baby’ cry.

A team of Oxford University scientists scanned the brains of 28 men and women as they listened to a variety of calls and cries. After 100 milliseconds-roughly the time to blink(眨眼)-- two parts of the brain that respond to emotion lit up. Their response to a baby’s cry was particularly strong. The response was seen in both men and women—even if they had no children.

Researcher Dr Christine Parson s said, “You might read that men should just notice a baby and step over it and not see it, but it’s not true. There is a special processing in men and women, which makes sense from an evolutionary(演变的) view that both men and women would be responding to t hese cries.” The study was in people who were not parents, yet they are all responding at 100ms to these particular cries, so this might be a fundamental response present in all of us regardless of parental status.

Fellow researcher Katie Young said it may take a bit longer for someone to recognize their own child’s cries because they need to do more “fine-grained analysis”. The team had previously found that our reactions speed up when we hear a baby crying. Adults performed better on computer games when they heard the sound of a baby crying than after they heard recordings of adults crying.

12. A baby’s cry is difficult to ignore because it _____.

A. keeps on crying

B. cries harder than adults

C. causes people great pain

D. makes people feel strong emotions

13.The underlined word “trigger” in Paragraph 2 probably means “_____”

A. remove

B. avoid

C. cause

D. cure

14. What may Christine Parsons agree to?

A. Almost everyone makes certain response t o a baby’s cries.

B. A crying baby makes no sense to people without children.

C. Men pay less attention to a crying baby than women.

D. Parents can hardly recognize their own babies’ cry.

15. What’s the main idea of the text?

A. Why you can’t get a baby’s cry out of your head

B. How to recognize different babies’ cries.

C. Why a baby is easy and likely to cry.

D. How to prevent a baby crying.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分)

They Just Can't Help It

My theory is that the female brain is mainly built for empathy — the ability to understand other people — and that the male brain is mainly built for building systems. ___16___ For example, women are more likely to read magazines on fashion and parenting, while men will choose magazines that feature computers and sport.

You may think that these preferences are influenced by the way people are taught to behave when they are growing up. However, this is not the case. A new study carried out at Cambridge University shows that newborn girls look longer at a face, and newborn boys look longer at a mobile. ___17___ It has also been observed that girls are better at noticing signs of changes in other people's feelings. Boys, however, seem to enjoy building toy towers and playing with toys which have clear functions. ___18___ People whose jobs are in the construction industries are almost male. Math and engineering, which

require high levels of systems-thinking, are also male-chosen disciplines. Why do men and women have the difference? Actually women have four times as many brain neurons (神经) that connect the right and left part of their brains. Because of it, women have a better ability to multitask than men. ___19___ Men tend to focus on a limited number of problems at a time. They will separate themselves from problems and view tasks as independent from one another.

Some people may worry that I am suggesting one gender (性别) is better than the other, but this is not the case. My theory says that males and females differ in the kinds of things that they find easy, but that both genders have their strengths and weaknesses. ___20___ It is not true. The study simply looks at males and females as two groups, and asks what differences exist, and why they are there.

A. Generally speaking, there are clear differences.

B. Their preference for building systems may change over time.

C. You can see the same kind of pattern in the adult workplace.

D. They will consider many sources of information at the same time.

E. It is important to stress that the female brain may be built more for empathy.

F. That suggests certain differences between male and female brains are biological.

G. Others may think the theory creates a belief of what a particular type of person is like.

第十处:so改成such。考查固定句式such/so…that…,so的后面要接形容词或副词,而such后面要接名词,本句中an instructive activity是名词短语,所以应该使用such引导。

Dear Jerry,

I am glad to tell you something about the Chinese naming practice.

Un like your tradition, the family name in China is put first, followed by the given name, which usually contains one or two Chinese characters. Chinese parents often name a baby with their best w ishes in mind, like w ishes for good health, bright future and happiness. Some names imp ly the birth t ime, birth place, or even a natural phenomenon at the t ime of birth. Bes ides, parents also need to consider how the names sound to avoid being teased or given a bad nickname.

As for your Chinese name, how about Jie Rui? These two characters have a similar pronunciation to your name Jerry and in Chinese they mean “outstanding and lucky”.

I hope you’ll love this Chinese name.

Yours,

Li Hua

高考题型提能练(九)Unit 9 Ⅰ.阅读理解 A (2018·河南省普通高中毕业班适应性测试)Is geography important? Here's a question for you to answer. What have the following countries got in common: Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, Iceland and Madagascar? Quite easy if you can picture them on the globe —they are all islands. All of these nations are surrounded by sea. What have these five nations got in common? Hungary, Botswana, Kazakhstan, Paraguay and Liechtenstein. They are all landlocked. In other words, in contrast to the first five countries whose coastline forms their border, the second five have no coastline at all. If you are a Hungarian or a Paraguayan, you have to pass through somebody else's country if you want to go to the beach. Liechtenstein is even more of a geographical phenomenon; it is “doubly landlocked” because the countries that surround it — Austria and Switzerland are also landlocked. There is only one other country in the world in a similar position, Uzbekistan, which is surrounded by five other landlocked countries. Go and have a look at the map if you want to know which. So how do countries become landlocked? If you are Swiss or
