Melbourne, Australia

Melbourne is a hotspot travel destination, and it’s easy to see its beautiful beaches and busy city life.

Why it’s a great choice: Australia as a whole is considered a safe destination for international travel, and because of that, many solo travelers go there. As an English-speaking country, you won’t be faced with any language barriers. Melbourne is easy to get around because you can walk or bike practically anywhere! Thailand

Thailand is great for solo travelers—perhaps because it is one of the Buddhist mindsets, which promote equality among the sexes.

Why it’s a great choice: Thailand is kn own for its friendly atmosphere, and as a travel hotspot, there are plenty of chances to meet other like-minded travelers. It’s well known for being very cheap, especially in the north. It’s a good choice if you want to get away on a budget. Thailand has a lot to offer, from the party-central Bangkok to beautiful beaches and tropical(热带的) jungle.

Hong Kong, China

Hong Kong is a great place to relax for solo travelers as it is full of “Zen Moments”, such as beautiful gardens and Tai Chi classes.

W hy it’s a great choice: Hong Kong is regarded as one of the safest cities in the world. If you’re not well-traveled, or perhaps a bit tired of things like language barriers, Hong Kong is a great place to start, as it mixes both Eastern and Western at the same time.

Bali, Indonesia

Bali is a spiritual place with yoga, spas, healthy food and beaches. The combination of friendly people and splendid visual culture has made Bali number one tourist attraction.

Why it’s so great: you won’t be the only solo traveler in Bali. Everyone is known for being extremely friendly and you’re sure to meet some amazing characters along the way. As a Hindu island, Bali is the perfect place for a relaxing and spiritual retreat(静修). The Sacred Monkey Forest in Ubud is fantastic—if you like monkeys, anyway.

Batteries are included, but the charger’s not. The Nokia E-Cu concept phone doesn’t need to plug in; it charges from any heat source. Designer Patrick Hyland says it can even work off the warmth of your pocket. The first time “it would take approximately seven hours to reach full charge, then after that it’s continuously charging by keeping the phone in areas between 86 degrees and 104 degrees Fahrenheit. ” That’s one hot pocket.

He’s put a thermo generator(热偶发电器)inside the phone that transforms heat

into electric potential energy. To better conduct the heat to that little power

plant in your pocket, the E-Cu(E for energy, Cu for copper)is coated by copper backing with heat sinks like those normally used to keep electronics from overheating.

Nokia doesn’t have current plans to build the phone, so for now it remains a concept. But Hyland says he’s open to anyone wh o wants to cooperate.

For Americans this technology would certainly be convenient. It would also save a bit on energy bills and waste. “Annually, unwanted phone chargers produce 51, 000 tons of waste in addition to the greenhouse gases created by the production of the electricity needed to charge them, ” Hyland says. So a charger-free phone is also a green phone. Though adapting our plug-in habits would help a group of people, most cell phone related energy use comes from leaving your charger plugged in all day unnecessarily.

The real potential for charger-free cell phone technology is what it could enable

places where plugging in isn’t an option, like rural areas in the developing world. Cell phones are spreading faster than power lines and bringing with them countless opportunities, aid and health advances. A phone like the E-Cu, if it ever comes to be, would enable all manner of expanded aid and development by phone projects. Let’s hope Patrick finds a partner.

When you’re lying on the white sands of the Mexican Riviera, the stresses (压力) of the world seem a million miles away. Hey, stop! This is no vacation—you have to finish something!

Here lies the problem for travel writer and food critic (评论家) Edie Jarolim. “I always loved traveling and always liked to eat, but it never occurred to me that I could make money doing both of those things. ” Jarolim said. Now you can read her travel advice everywhere — in Arts and Antiques, in Brides, or in one of her three books, The Complete Idiot Travel Guide to Mexico’s Beach Resorts. Her job in travel writing began some eight years ago. After getting a PhD in English in Canada, she took a test for Frommer’s travel guides, passed it, and got the job. After working at Frommer’s, Jarolim worked for a while at Rough Guides in London, then Fodor’s, where she fell so in love with a description of the Southwest of the U. S. that she moved there.

Now as a travel writer, she spends one-third of her year on the road. The rest of the time is spent completing her tasks and writing reviews of restaurants at home in Tucson, Arizona.

As adventurous as the job sounds, the hard part is fact-checking all the information. Sure, it’s great to write about a tourist attraction, but you’d better get the local (当地的) museum hours correct or you could really ruin someone’s vacation.

1. Which country does Jarolim live in now?

A. Mexico.

B. The U. S.

C. The U. K.

D. Canada.

根据第三段的then Fodor’s, where she fell so in love with a description of the Southwest of the U. S. that she moved there. 以及第四段的at home in Tucson, Arizona可知。

2. What is most difficult for Jarolim?

A. Working in different places to collect information.

B. Checking all the facts to be written in the guides.

C. Finishing her work as soon as possible.

D. Passing a test to write travel guides.

As adventurous as the job sounds, the hard part is fact-checking all the information可知。

3. What do we know about Jarolim from the text?

A. She is successful in her job.

B. She finds her life full of stresses.

C. She spends half of her time traveling.

D. She is especially interested in museums.

【解析】选A。 故选A。

4. What would be the best title for the text?

A. Adventures in Travel Writing

B. Working as a Food Critic

C. Travel Guides on the Market

D. Vacationing for a Living

1. review n.

2. adventurous adj.

3. ruin v.

4. it never occurred to me that. . .

5. for a while 不久, 一段时间

6. fall in love with 喜欢上

7. a tourist attraction

After working at Frommer’s, Jarolim worked for a while at Rough Guides in London, then Fodor’s, where she fell so in love with a description of the Southwest of the U. S. that she moved there.

分析: After working相当于After she worked; where 引导的定语从句修饰的是先行词Fodor’s。 . . that. . .

1 When families gather for Christmas dinner, some will stick to formal traditions dating back to grandma's generation. Their tables will be set with the good dishes and silver, and the dress code will be Sunday best. But in many other homes, this china-and-silver elegance has given way to a stoneware (粗陶) and stainless informality, with dresses assuming an equally casual-Friday look. For hosts and guests, the change means greater simplicity and comfort. For makers of fine china in Britain, it spells economic hard times. Last week Royal Doulton, the largest employer in Stoke-on-Trent, announced that it is eliminating 1,000 jobs -- one-fifth of its total workforce. That brings to more than 4, 000 the number of positions lost in 18 months in the pottery (陶瓷) region. Wedgwood and other pottery factories made cuts earlier. Although a strong pound and weak markets in Asia play a role in the downsizing, the layoffs in Stoke have their roots in earthshaking social shifts. A spokesman for Royal Doulton admitted that the company "has been somewhat slow in catching up with the trend" toward casual dining. Families eat together less often, he explained, and more people eat alone, either because they are single or they eat in front of television. Even dinner parties, if they happen at all, have gone casual. In a time of long work hours and demanding family schedules, busy hosts insist, rightly, that it's better to share a takeout pizza on paper plates in the family room than to wait for the perfect moment or a "real" dinner party. Too often, the perfect moment never comes. Iron a fine-patterned tablecloth? Forget it. Polish the silver? Who has time? Yet the loss of formality has its down side. The fine points of etiquette (礼节) that children might once have learned at the table by observation or instruction from parents and grandparents (" Chew with your mouth closed." "Keep your elbows off the table. ") must be picked up else- where. Some companies now offer etiquette seminars for employees who may be able professionally but inexperienced socially. 72. Why do people tend to follow the trend to casual dining? A. Family members need more time to relax. B. Busy schedules leave people no time for formality. C. People prefer to live a comfortable life. D. Young people won't follow the etiquette of the older generation. 73. It can be learned from the passage that 'Royal Doulton is . A. a seller of stainless steel tableware B. a dealer in stoneware C. a pottery chain store D. a producer of fine China 74. The main cause of the layoffs in the pottery industry is .

What’s the main idea of this passage ? What does this passage mainly discuss? What’s the topic of this passage ? 2. What’s the best title? The best title for this text is (to tell ) ————. 3. The main purpose of this text is ————. The author’s purpose o f writing this text is to ————. What’s the main purpose of the passage?

1 O. Henry was a pen name used by an American writer of short stories. His real name was William Sydney Porter. He was born in North Carolina in 1862. As a young boy he lived an exciting life. He did not go to school for very long, but he managed to teach himself everything he needed to know. When he was about 20 years old, O. Henry went to Texas, where he tried different jobs. He first worked on a newspaper, and then had a job in a bank, when some money went missing from the bank O. Henry was believed to have stolen it. Because of that, he was sent to prison. During the three years in prison, he learned to write short stories. After he got out of prison, he went to New Y ork and continued writing. He wrote mostly about New Y ork and the life of the poor there. People liked his stories, because simple as the tales were, they would finish with a sudden change at the end, to the reader’s surprise. 2 One day a few years ago a very funny thing happened to a neighbour of mine. He is a teacher at one of Londo n’s big medical schools, He had finished his teaching for the summer term and was at the airport on his way to Russia to give a lecture. He had put a few clothes and his lecture notes in his shoulder bag, but he had put Rupert, the skeleton (人体骨骼) to be used in his lecture, in a large brown suitcase (箱子). At the airport desk, he suddenly thought that he had forgotten to buy a newspaper. He left his suitcase near the desk and went over to the shop. When he got back he discovered that someone had taken his suitcase by mistake. He often wonders what they said when they got home and found Rupert. 3 On the evening of June 21, 1992, a tall man with brown hair and blue eyes entered the beautiful hall of the Bell Tower Hotel in Xi’an with his bicycle. Th e hotel workers received him and telephoned the manager, for they had never seen a bicycle in the hotel ball before though they lived in “the kingdom of bicycles.” Robert Friedlander, an American, arrived in Xi’an on his bicycle trip across Asia which started last December in New Delhi, India. When he was 11, he read the book Marco Polo and made up his mind to visit the Silk Road. Now, after 44 years , he was on the Silk Road in Xi’an and his early dreams were coming true. Robert Friedlander’s next destinations (目的地) were Lanzhou, Dunhuang, Urumqi, etc. He will complete his trip in Pakistan. 4、(1分) Mr. Grey was the manager of a small office in London. He lived in the country, and came up to work by train. He liked walking from the station to his office unless it was raining, because it gave him some exercise. One morning he was walking along the street when a stranger stopped him and said to him, “Y ou may not remember me, sir, but seven years ago I came to London without a penny in my pockets, I stopped you in this street and asked you to lend me some money, and you lent me £ 5, because you said you were willing to take a chance so as to give a man a start on the way to success.” Mr Grey thought for a few minutes and then said, “Y es, I remember you. Go on with your story!” “Well,” answered the stranger, “are you still willing to take a chance?”5、(1分)

1) Which was the USA's strongest earthquakes ? 2) How many people lost their lives and how many people lost their homes in the 1906 earthquake ? 3) How many people lost their lives in the 1989 earthquake? 4) When the 1906 earthquake happened, how many metres did the Pacific plate jump to the north ? 5) How many measures(措施) can we take in order to deal with earthquakes ? 6) What is " The Big One"?

用这种阅读方法回答who、what、when、where之类的问题最为有效。 2.
