(2013·湖北,D)A German study suggests that people who were too optimistic about their future actually faced greater risk of disability or death within 10 years than those pessimists who expected their future to be worse.

The paper, published this March in Psychology and Aging, examined health and welfare surveys from roughly 40,000 Germans between ages 18 and 96.The surveys were conducted every year from 1993 to 2003.

Survey respondents (受访者) were asked to estimate their present and future life satisfaction on a scale of 0 to 10, among other questions.

The researchers found that young adults (age 18 to 39) r outinely overestimated their future life satisfaction, while middleaged adults (age 40 to 64) more accurately predicted how they would feel in the future.Adults of 65 and older, however, were far more likely to underestimate their future life satisfaction. Not only did they feel more satisfied than they thought they would, the older pessimists seemed to suffer a lower ratio (比率) of disability and death for the study period.

“We observed that being too optimistic in predicting a better future than actually observed was associated with a greater risk of disability and a greater risk of death within the following decade,” wro te Frieder R.Lang, a professor at the University of ErlangenNuremberg.

Lang and his colleagues believed that people who were pessimistic ab out their future may be more careful about their actions than people who expected a rosy future.

“Seeing a dark fut ure may encourage positive evaluations of the actual self and may contribute to taking improved precautions(预防措施),”the authors wrote.

Surprisingly, compared with those in poor health or who had low incomes, respondents who enjoyed good health or income were associated with expecting a greater decline. Also, the researchers said that higher income was related to a greater risk of disability.

The authors of the study noted that there were limitations to their conclusions.Illness, medical treatment and personal loss could also have driven health outcomes.

However, the researchers said a pattern was clear.“We found that from early to late adulthood, individuals adapt their expectations of future life

satisfaction from optimistic, to accurate, to pessimistic,” the authors concluded.

Experts say the temperature in Eyjaf jallajokull's hole appears to have fallen to 100℃, meaning it is now producing steam, not magma(岩浆).

But officials warned that it was too early to say whether the eruption was over completely.

Ash clouds from the volcano grounded thousands of flights last month.

Steinunn Jakobsdottir, a geophysicist from the Icelandic Meteorological Office, told the BBC that the volcano w as “kind of not active for the moment”.“The history of the volc ano is such that it calms down and then it gets energy again,” she said.

“There are still earthquakes under the volcano, and the small earthquake is still not quite down to what it was before the eruption.”

Magnus Gudmundsson, of Iceland U niversity, flew over the volcano on Sunday and said information from heat cameras showed the temperatures at the crater had fallen-below 100℃.

But he told the AFP news agency that nothing was promised and that the previous eruption at the volcano had lasted 13 months, from 1821—1823.

“It stopped and started again several times with different intervals(间隔), so it's difficult to say, difficult to give a timeline,” he said.

He also said it was impossible to say whether the neighbouring Katla Volcano—a much larger mountain—might also erupt.

At the height of its activity, the volcano sent out huge clouds of ash, which

led to airlines grounding their planes for fear it could interfere with plane engines.

It was the biggest action of closing airspace in Europe since World War Ⅱ, and affected at least 10 million passengers worldwide.

1.What do experts think Eyjafjallajokull is like now?

A.Magma is still coming out.

B.The hole appears about 100℃.

C.The eruption was not over.

D.It is very cold.

2.How do experts know the temperature in Eyjafjallajokull's hole?

A.By taking photos.

B.By taking its temperature.

C.By going close to it.

D.By driving past it.

3.What does Steinunn Jakobsdottir think of Eyjafjallajokull? A.It will erupt again soon.

B.It will be sleeping.

C.Another mountain might also erupt.

D.It's uncertain.

4.What do you think the main idea is?

A.The biggest action of closing airspace in Europe.

B.The temperature in Eyjafjallajokull's hole.

C.The Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland.

D.The earthquake in Iceland.

A caring mother is the single most important factor in Preventing teenagers from abusing(滥用)drugs and alcohol, researchers said on Friday. An international study showed that teenagers living with both parents are less likely to suffer from alcohol and drug problems, and a strong maternal bond is the most effective way to fight against them.

“These findings suggest that livin g with both parents may prevent drug use.”said Dr.McArdle,of Newcastle University i n northern England, who led the study.“They also suggest that attachment(感情眷念),particularly to mothers,is a more effective factor and that this is truly across cultures and substances.”The report, which is published in the journal Addiction, involved nearly 4,000 teenagers in England, Ireland, Italy,Germany and the Netherlands. They were questioned about their use of several kinds of drugs and alcoh ol.The teenagers also filled in questionnaires about their relationship with their parents and grandparents, how well they were supervised(监护)after school and whether they were allowed to meet friends at home.

“Both the quality of family relationships and the structure of families have significant influences on yo uth drug use,”McArdle said in a statement. But he added a strong maternal bond offered the greatest protection against developing drug habits. The rate of drug abuse among teenagers living with both parents and who had a good relationship with their mother was 16.6 percent. If either factor was missing ,the drug abuse rate rose to 32 percent.More than 42 percent of teenagers living in one parent families who did not have a strong bond with their mother used drugs.

BEIJING—China's Beijing and Shanghai cities and Guangdong Province on Sunday published plans to gradually allow migrant workers' children to enter senior high schools and sit college entrance exams locally.

They are the latest in a total of 13 provinces and municipalities(市) to formulate plans to ensure that rural children who have followed their parents to cities can enjoy the same rights as their urban peers in education.

Beijing will allow migrant workers' children to attend local vocational schools in 2013 and allow them to be matriculated by universities after graduating from the vocational programs in 2014, said a statement from the city's commission of education.

Shanghai took a step further, saying it will allow migrant children in the city to enter local senior high schools, vocational schools and sit college entrance exams (commonly known as gaokao) locally starting in 2014.

Guangdong has asked its cities to start recruiting(招收) migrant workers' children in local senior high schools in 2013. The province will allow these children to sit gaokao and compete with local residents in college entrance exams starting in 2016. Luo Weiqi said the restrictions would be relaxed gradually and “step by step” as the province must solve the conflict between its gigantic migrant population and a scarcity of education resources.

Migrant workers, whose children could be benefited by the new plans of the three regions, must have residential permits, stable jobs and incomes, and meet other local requirements, according to the plans.

China's hukou, or household registration system, used to confine children to attending schools in their home provinces. A regulation in 2003 amended this by allowing migrant workers' children to receive the nineyear compulsory education in cities where their parents worked.

Official figures show that China has more than 250 million farmersturnedworkers living in cities. An estimated 20 million children have migrated with their parents to the cities.

C.Beijing will allow migrant workers' children to enter all the local schools in 2013.

D.Migrant workers' children began to receive senior high school education in cities where their parents worked in 2003.

3.Which of the following words is closest in meaning to the underlined word “confine”?

A.Limit. B.Prevent.

2014江苏省溧水县高考英语最后冲刺 阅读理解巩固训练5

2014江苏省溧水县高考英语阅读理解巩固训练 社会生活类阅读理解 Few laws are so effective that you can see results just days after they take effect. But in the nine days since the federal cigarette tax more than doubled—to $1. 01 per pack—smokers have jammed telephone“quit lines” across the country seeking to kick the habit. This is not a surprise to public health advocates. They’ve studied the effect of state tax increases for years, finding that smokers, especially teens, are price sensitive. Nor is it a shock to the industry, which fiercely fights every tax increase. The only wonder is that so many states insist on closing their ears to the message. Tobacco taxes improve public health, they raise money and most particularly, they deter people from taking up the habit as teens, which is when nearly all smokers are addicted. Yet the rate of taxation varies widely. In Manhattan, for instance, which has the highest tax in the nation, a pack of Marlboro Light Kings cost $10. 06 at one drugstore Wednesday. In Charleston, S. C. , where the 7-cent-a-pack tax is the lowest in the nation, the price was $4. 78. The influence is obvious. In New York, high school smoking hit a new low in the latest surveys—13. 8%, far below the national average. By comparison, 26% of high school students smoke in Kentucky. Other low-tax states have similarly depressing teen-smoking records. Hal Rogers, Representative from Kentucky, like those who are against high tobacco taxes, argues that the burden of the tax falls on low-income Americans“who choose to smoke.” T hat’s true. But there is more reason in keeping future generations of low-income workers from getting hooked in the first place. As for today’s adults, if the new tax drives them to quit, they will have more to spend on their families, cut their risk of cancer and heart disease and feel better. 1. The text is mainly about . A. the price of cigarettes B. the rate of teen sm oking C. the effect of tobacco tax increase D. the differences in tobacco tax rate

高考英语一轮 阅读理解暑假训练题(7) (3)

落堕市安心阳光实验学校2014 高考英语(阅读理解)一轮暑假训练(7)(答案) FRIDAY, Dec.5, 2008—College students who think all-night study sessions will help them remember facts might want to get some sleep instead. That's the message from a new study that finds that as you sleep, the mind consolidates the things you learn during the day.Study participants who learned how to play a video game in the morning or evening did a better job the next day after a night's rest, apparently because their brains were actively absorbing what they'd learned as they slept. The finding shows "that sleep is not just a passive state when no information is coming in," said Howard Nusbaum, a professor of psychology at the University of Chicago. For the study, the researchers recruited 200 college students. Most of them weren't very familiar with playing video games. Some of the participants learned how to play the games in the morning, while others learned in the evening. The researchers then tested the subjects on the video games 12 hours later and 24 hours later. Those who took part in the morning training sessions showed an average eight-percentage-point improvement in their performance immediately after training. They performed more poorly—scoring four percentage points better—12 hours later. But they scored 10 percentage points better the next morning. "If we train you in the morning and come back at the end of the day, you forget some of what you learned," Nusbaum said."But if you sleep after that, it restores some of what you learned." The students who took part in the evening training sessions performed better the next morning after sleeping, than they did after being trained. The role that dreams play in the learning process—if any—isn't clear. But some dreams could serve as a kind of practice for the brain, Nusbaum said."If you play a video game a lot, and you're playing in your dreams, maybe that could help you learn." Jerry Siegel, professor at the Center for Sleep Research at the University of Calfornia, Los Angeles, said going without sleep hurts performance, but he's not convinced that sleep itself actively contributes to learning. "If you take a break for a few hours, it can easily be shown that learning did occur, because performance is better at the start of a new learning session than it was at the end of the initial session," he said."No sleep needs to occur for this to happen." Still, Siegel suggested that sleep before learning a skill is crucial."For long-term retention, it is more important to be well rested and therefore attentive when you are doing the learning than afterwards,"

2023届高考英语三轮复习阅读理解七选五冲刺训练:说明文篇 (7)学案(含答案)

2023届高考英语三轮复习阅读理解七选五冲刺训练: 说明文篇(7) ①滴灌和水培农业 【题目】 Agriculture has come a long way from its ancient beginnings. Long ago, farmers would work hard on their individual plots of land, using simple tools or even their bare hands. They tended to their crops for many hours each day so that the crops while a summer of good weather could ensure a good harvest. Modern science and technology have helped to greatly reduce the back-breaking labour involved in farming, along with the reliance on luck and guesswork. ____2____ Probably one of the most beneficial innovations is drip irrigation, which has made it possible to develop big, green farms in the middle of the desert. Simcha Blass, an Israeli scientist, discovered this new way of irrigation in the 1930s. Through this discovery, farmers can now produce crops on dry land without needing much water. ____3____ The limited and focused use of just the right amount of water also denies moisture (水分) to weeds, keeping them from harming the crops. ____4____ However, what if an area has plenty of water, but little usable soil? As it turns out, it is possible to grow plants without using soil at all. With hydroponics (水培), plant roots are supported by rocks or a fiber mat. Nutrient-rich water is then provided so that the plants can grow. Recent research has centered on vertical hydroponics farming. With a vertical farm, the crops are planted in containers that are piled into plant skyscrapers. ____5____ With such technological advances, the image of a farmer pushing a plough will eventually become a thing of the past. A.Luck played a great part in farming. B.Some areas would be too dry to grow crops.

2014高考英语阅读理解精英训练极品题(7)及答案 阅读理解—--—--C Engineering students are supposed to be examples of practicality and rationality (理性),but when it comes to my college education I am an idealist and a fool。In high school I wanted to be an electrical engineer and, of course, any reasonable student with my aims would have chosen a college with a large engineering department, many famous professors and lots of good labs and research equipment。But that’s not what I did。 I chose to study engineering in a small liberal-arts (文科)university that doesn't even offer a major in electrical engineering. Obviously, this was not a practical choice;I came here for more noble reasons. I wanted a broad education that would provide me with flexibility and a value system to guide me in my job. I wanted to open my eyes and expand my vision by communicating with people who weren't studying science or engineering。My parents, teachers and other adults praised me for such a wise choice. They told me I was wise and grown-up beyond my 18 years, and I believed them。 I headed off to the college and sure I was going to have an advantage over those students who went to big engineering ”factories” where they didn't care if you had values or were flexible。I was going to be a complete engineer:technical expert and excellent humanist all in one。

2014高考英语二轮阅读理解限时训练精品题(9)及答案[史地自然型阅读理解(一)]-—-——A The Pacific island nation of Nauru used to be a beautiful place. Now it is an ecological disaster area。Nauru's heartbreaking story could have one good consequence—other countries might learn from its mistakes。 For thousands of years,Polynesian people lived in the remote island of Nauru, far from Western civilization. The first European to arrive was John Fearn in 1798。He was the British captain of the Hunter,a whaling ship.He called the island Pleasant Island. However, because it was very remote, Nauru had little communication with Europeans at first. The whaling ships and other traders began to visit it,bringing guns and alcohol。These elements destroyed the social balance of the twelve family groups on the island.A ten.year civil war started, which reduced the population from 1,400 to 900。 Nauru’s real troubles began in 1899 when a British mining company discovered phosphate(磷酸盐)on the island。In fact,it found that the island of Nauru was nearly all phosphate, which was a very important fertilizer for farming. The company began mining the phosphate. A phosphate mine is not a hole in the ground;it is a strip mine. When a company discovers strip mining,it removes the top layer of soil. Then it takes away the material it wants.Strip mining totally destroys the land。Gradually, the lovely island of Nauru started to look like the moon.

定额市鞍钢阳光实验学校2014高考英语阅读理解巩固精品题练习(24)及答案 阅读理解 Over two hundred years ago, Adam Smith introduced some ideas which brought about a world revolution. If we enjoy a high standard of living in modem society, we owe much to this Scottish economist and philosopher. If we enjoy driving in beautiful cars, wearing fashionable shoes, or flying away to distant places for exciting holidays, we should perhaps pay thanks to the man who made it all possible. What was Adam Smith’s contribution? Like so many ideas w hich have surprising effects, his was a simple one.He watched workers practicing their craft(工艺) of pi11 making. One man would heat the strip of metal, stretch it out, cut off a suitable length, shape it, cool it and finally smooth and shine it.Smith drew attention to the advantages which could be gained if these various tasks were performed by different workers.Let one be responsible for preparing the metal.Another for stretching and cutting.Another for shaping.Another for finishing. He described the technique as the Division of Labor; in this way workers repeat the same actions again and again.Smith made the world believe that specialization could solve the problem of poverty and want. What was the result? 专题一阅读理解 训练7 情感态度 A(导学号59430066) When I asked my mother-in-law to select which meals she'd like me to order from the home-delivery menu, she only chose the ones her husband would like. This goes way beyond politeness. She is actually feeling uncomfortable voicing what she wants. She developed the main symptom of Asker's Syndrome that one's unable to ask for what one wants. It's not just older women who have this problem.Asker's Syndrome can strike the young.I have single friends who won't ask a man out on a date because they fear being considered “too forward”.My five-year-old daughter Violet is showing the early stages of Asker's Syndrome. She's learned that women don't ask,but rather drop hints. She'll say,“Remember last Sunday afternoon we went to the park?” rather than “Can we go to the park?” Apart from women and girls' problematic relationship with appetite, food and dating,it's widely reported that women are less likely than men to ask for pay rises and promotions.Instead, they withdraw, hoping that somebody else will decide they are worthy and make them promoted. No doubt, many women develop Asker's Syndrome as a defensive measure because they've been labeled as pushy or rude for simply asking for what they want. But in the long term, choosing not to express our desires doesn't serve us well. It's time to cure ourselves and our girls of Asker's Syndrome.I don't want to raise a future “mother” who denies her wish for food, power and success and anything else.So I now insist that my daughter ask for what she wants directly. For women in our culture, asking is a skill that we need to learn and practice. And if we all do it,then women asking will become the norm rather than the exception. 【语篇解读】本文作者通过事例来告诉我们提问者的综合征的症状是什么,并且提出自己的看法,鼓励女士们勇于发表自己的观点,说出自己真正想要的。 1.The author's mother-in-law is mentioned in Paragraph 1 to ________.A.introduce the old lady B.set an example C.talk about her illness D.lead in a topic
