No one knows for sure when advertising first started. It is possible that it grew out of the discovery that some people did certain kinds of work better than others did them. That led to the concept of specialization, which means that people would specialize,or focus,on doing one specific job.

Let's take a man we'll call Mr. Fielder, for example .He did everything connected with farming. He planted seeds, tended the fields, and harvested and sold his crops. At the same time,he did many other jobs on the farm. However,he didn't make the bricks for his house, cut his trees into boards, make the plows(犁),or any of the other hundreds of things a farm needs. Instead,he got them from people who specialized in doing each of those things.

Suppose there was another man we shall call Mr. Plowright. Using what he knew about farming and working with iron,Mr. Plowright invented a plow that made farming easier. Mr.Plowright did not really like farming himself and wanted to specialize in making really good plows. Perhaps,he thought, other farmers will trade what they grow for one of my plows.

How did Mr. Plowright let people know what he was doing? Why, he advertised, of course. First he opened a shop and then he put up a sign outside the shop to attract customers. That sign may have been no more than a plow carved into a piece of wood and a simple arrow pointing to the shop door. It was probably all the information people needed to find Mr. Plowright and his really good plows.

Many historians believe that the first outdoor signs were used about five thousand years ago. Even before most people could read, they understood such signs. Shopkeepers would carve into stone, clay, or wood symbols for the products they had for sale.

A medium,in advertising talk, is the way you communicate your message. You might say that the first medium used in advertising was signs with symbols. The second medium was audio, or sound, although that term is not used exactly in the way we use it today. Originally, just the human voice and maybe some kind of simple instrument, such as a bell, were used to get people's attention.

A crier, in the historical sense, is not someone who weeps easily. It is someone, probably a man, with a voice loud enough to be heard over the other noises of a city. In ancient Egypt, shopkeepers might hire such a person to spread the news about their products. Often this earliest form of advertising involved a newly arrived ship loaded with goods. Perhaps the crier described

the goods, explained where they came from, and praised their quality. His job was,in other words, not too different from a TV or radio commercial in today's world.

56. What probably led to the start of advertising? _________

C. The appearance of new jobs.

D. The development of farming techniques.

57. To advertise his plows, Mr. Plowright _________.

For some people, music is no fun at all. About four percent of the population is what scientists call “amusic”. People who are amusic are born without the ability to recognize or reproduce musical notes (音调). Amusic people often cannot tell the difference between two songs. Amusics can only hear the difference between two notes if they are very far apart on the musical scale.

As a result, songs sound like noise to an amusic. Many amusics compare the sound of music to pieces of metal hitting each other. Life can be hard for amusics. Their inability to enjoy music sets them apart from others. It can be difficult for other people to identify with their condition. In fact, most people cannot begin to grasp what it feels like to be amusic. Just going to a restaurant or a shopping mall can be uncomfortable or even painful. That is why many amusics intentionally stay away from places where there is music. However, this can result in withdrawal and social isolation. “I used to hate parties,” says Margaret,a seventy-year-old woman who only recently discovered that she was amusic. By studying people like Margaret, scientists are finally learning

how to identify this unusual condition.

Scientists say that the brains of amusics are different from the brains of people who can appreciate music. The difference is complex, and it doesn't involve defective hearing. Amusics can understand other nonmusical sounds well. They also have no problems understanding ordinary speech. Scientists compare amusics to people who just can't see certain colors.

Many amusics are happy when their condition is finally diagnosed (诊断). For years, Margaret felt embarrassed about her problem with music. Now she knows that she is not alone. There is a name for her condition. That makes it easier for her to explain. “When people invite me to a concert, I just say ‘No thanks, I’m amusic,’” says Margaret. “I just wish I had learned to say that when I was seventeen and not seventy.”

60. Which of the following is true of amusics? _________.

A. Listening to music is far from enjoyable for them.

B. They love places where they are likely to hear music.

C. They can easily tell two different songs apart.

D. Their situation is well understood by musicians.

61. According to Paragraph 3, a person with “defective hearing”is probably one who _________.

A. dislikes listening to speeches

B. can hear anything nonmusical

C. has a hearing problem

D. lacks a complex hearing system

62. In the last paragraph,Margaret expressed her wish that ________.

A. her problem with music had been diagnosed earlier

B. she were seventeen years old rather than seventy

C. her problem could be easily explained

D. she were able to meet other amusics

63. What is the passage mainly concerned with? ________.

A. Amusics’ strange behaviors.

B. Some people's inability to enjoy music.

C. Musical talent and brain structure.

D. Identification and treatment of amusics.

Tail Spin

Two dolphins race around in a big pool in the Ocean Park. The smaller dolphin Grace, shows off a few of her tricks, turning around and waving hello to the crowd. The most amazing thing about her, however,is that she's even swimming at all. She doesn't have a tail.

Grace lost her tail as a baby when she got caught up in a fish trap. When the dolphin arrived

at the Ocean Park in December 2005,she was fighting for her life. “Is she going to make it?” Her trainer, Abbey Stone, feared the worst. Grace did make it—but her tail didn't. She ended up losing her flukes and the lower part of her peduncle.

Over the past six years, she has learned to swim without her tail. Dolphins swim by moving their flukes and peduncle up and down. Grace taught herself to move another way—like a fish! She pushes herself forward through the water by moving her peduncle from side to side.

The movements put harmful pressure on Grace's backbone. So a company offered to create a man-made tail for her. The tail had to be strong enough to stay on Grace as she swam but soft enough that it wouldn't hurt her.

The first time Grace wore the artificial tail, she soon shook it off and let it sink to the bottom of the pool. Now, she is still learning to use the tail. Some days she wears it for an hour at a time, others not at all. “The new tail isn't necessary for her to feel comfortable,”says Stone, “but it helps to keep that range of motion(动作)and build muscles(肌肉).”

Now, the dolphin is about to get an even happier ending. This month,Grace will star in Dolphin Tale, a film that focuses on her rescue and recovery. Her progress has inspired more than just a new movie. Many people travel from near and far to meet her. Seeing Grace swim with her man-made tail gives people so much courage.

64. When Grace first arrived at the Ocean Park, her trainer worried about her ________.

A. physical build

B. potential ability

C. chance of survival

D. adaptation to the surroundings

65. A man-made tail is created for Grace to ________.

A. let her recover faster

B. make her comfortable

C. adjust her way of swimming

D. help her perform better tricks

66. The story of Grace inspires people to ________.

A. stick to their dreams

B. treat animals friendly

C. treasure what they have

D. face difficulties bravely

D

Some people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck. I’m not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances don't come into play because they do. Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that's just the reality of how life is.

However, to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more

practical. And, in addition to that, in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practicing. To become great at certain things, it'll require even more time, time that most people won't put in.

This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. If you don't enjoy what you do, it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you quit well before you ever become good at it.

When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get there at a huge cost. It's sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there's a huge chance that you're wrong anyway.

Whatever you do, if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time. If you're not willing to put in the time and work, don't expect to receive any rewards. Consistent, hard work won't guarantee you the level of success you may want, but it will guarantee that you will become really good at whatever it is you put all that work into.

67. Paragraph 1 mainly talks about ________.

A. the reasons for success

B. the meaning of success

C. the standards of success

D. the importance of success

68. Successful people suggest doing what one loves because ________.

A. work makes one feel pain

B. one tends to enjoy his work

C. one gives up his work easily

D. it takes a lot of time to succeed

69. What can we infer from Paragraph 4? ________.

A. Successful people like to show their great skills.

B. People sometimes succeed without luck or talent.

C. People need to achieve success at the cost of life.

D. It helps to think that luck or talent leads to success.

70. What is the main theme of the passage? ________.

A. Having a goal is vital to success.

B. Being good is different from being great.

C. One cannot succeed without time and practice.

D. Luck, talent and family help to achieve success.

I enjoy the selection of produce and fresh bakery items. I have been a long time Supermart shopper and hope to continue for many years. I have found, however, that I must make a separate shopping trip to one of your competitors because there are many items your store does not carry. This becomes inconvenient for me, as my time is valuable, and I do not like to make two trips. Your low prices and excellent customer service keep me coming back to Supermart, but I would be a more satisfied customer if I could find all the items I need in one place. Specifically, I have never been able to purchase nacho cheese soup at your store. I can find other flavors (味道) of soup, but your store does not carry nacho cheese soup, a common ingredient (原料) in many of my recipes. In addition, I can only find large wonton wrappers, while many other stores carry both large and small and offer a more varied selection for their customers. Another example is Regent Brand Chili Seasoning. Though it is not a leading brand, it is still common on the shelves of other grocery stores in this area and is superior in flavor to its competitors. I sincerely hope to continue a relationship with your store, and I hope that you will consider the possibility of expanding your goods to be more competitive. Yours truly, Bob Watson 56. 一、中考英语阅读理解汇编 1.阅读短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。 Blue Lightning Sally loved cars more than anything else. This spring she thought of building a go-kart to enter for the Go-Go Race. So she asked her dad for help. "Well," he said. "How about this: you do some research first and then come back to me with a design." A week later, Sally brought her notes and drawings to Dad. She named her go-kart "Blue Lightning". Dad looked over her work, thinking. "Well, that's interesting," he said. "Have a try. Just build Blue Lightning as you've designed." Over three weekends of hard work, Sally turned her design into a real, working go-kart and painted it light blue. Dad asked her to take it for a test drive. Sally agreed. After she did that, Sally drove back to Dad. "Well," she said. "Now I know why you wanted me to have a test drive." "Oh, do you?" he said. "Please share." "When I drove fast, there was a lot of pushback," she said. "I think it's because of the lightning bolt (闪电) shape." "Very good!" Dad said. "So, why didn't you tell me about that problem in the first place?" Sally asked. Dad laughed. "Where's the fun in that? If you give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day. But if you teach a man to fish, he'll eat for a lifetime." Sally said, "I see. Anyway, designing is half the fun!" Dad smiled. "Good. Sometimes, learning happens during the process. We learn how to do something right by doing it a few times first and making mistakes along the way." That encouraged Sally and she worked even harder. When she showed Dad her new go-kart, he nodded with pride. Finally came the race.

What he bought for you which you should have seen is the Italian car,这句中就用到了一个定语从句来修饰名词,教师在讲解时会把这个关系讲解得很清楚,可是学生还是不明白为什么这句话要这么说,这也就是没有最终理解语言的逻辑。
