After 21 years of marriage, I started to go out with another woman .It was really my wife’s idea. ―I know that you love her ,‖ she said one day ,taking me by surprise. ―But I love YOU,‖ I protested. ―I know ,but you also love her.‖

The other woman that my wife wanted me to visit was my mother , who has been a widow for 19 years, but the demands of my work and my three children had made it possible to visit her only occasionally .That night I called to invite her to go dinner and a movie ,―What’s wrong ,are you well ?‖ she asked .

My mother is the type of woman who suspects that a late night call or a surprise invitation is a sign of bad news. ― I thought that it would be pleasant to pass some time with you,‖ I responded. ― Just the two of us .‖ Sh e thought about it for a moment, then said, ― I would like that very much‖

She had curled her hair and was wearing the dress that she had worn to celebrate her last wedding anniversary. ― I told my friends that I was going to go out with my

son ,and they were impressed ,‖ she said, as she got into the car . ―They can’t wait to hear about our meeting .‖

We went to a restaurant that, although not elegant, was very nice and comfortable. My mother took my arm as if she were the First Lady. After we sat down, I had to read the menu. Her eyes could only read large print

“It was I who used to have to read the menu when you were small,‖ she said

“Then it’s time that you relax and let me return the favor,‖ I responded.

During the dinner we had an agreeable conversation —nothing extraordinary —but catching up on recent events of each other’s life. We talked so much that we missed

the movie .As we arrived at her house later, she said 。“I’ll go out with you again ,but only if you let me invite you,‖ I agreed.

I cannot remember too many specific of what I was taught in school, but I do remember learning the layers of the earth—inner core(地核),outer core, mantle ,crust, I think it’s rather humorous that I know these ,because studying the earth is not exactly something that would interest me . The only subjects I enjoyed in school were art and spelling .Every other subject I seemed to tune out. Anyway ,the reason I learned the layers of the earth and actually enjoyed learning them was because my 6th grade teacher told us that she was going to make an ice-cream earth. For the entire week, I tired to imagine how in the world she was going to do this .She had us memorize the layers so that we would be able to tell her names of them before we would get some ice-cream that Friday

Friday came and everyone was excited. I was even more excited that I could tell the layers so that we would be able to tell her names of them before we would get some ice-cream that Friday

Friday came and everyone was excited. I was even more excited that I could tell the teacher the names of each layer. She got a big bowl, lined it with a chocolate cracker crust, then three layers of different colored ice-cream. I thought it was so cool that the crust was the crust.

This shows me that taking the time to teach creatively is worth it because unique activities are what students will learn, rather than simply reading everything from a text or listening to lectures done in black and white.

60. According to the writer ,how did his teacher teach creatively?

A. She was humorous and taught geography in art and spelling classes.

When I look at the list of my favorite restaurants ,one of the details that will get an establishment on the list is to know and remember my name .However ,it really doesn’t matter a s much that they know my name as it matters that they go the extra effort to discover my name and greet me like a valued customer or friend. When it’s all said and done ,we are each in the people business.

LONDON—Middle age is truly miserable ,according to a study using data from

80countries showing that depression(抑郁症)is most common among men and woman in their forties.

The British and US researchers found that happiness for people ranging from Albania to Zimbabwe follows a U-shaped curve(U 型曲线)where life begins cheerful before turning tough during middle age then returning to the joys of youth in the golden years.

“In a surprisingly regular way throughout the world people slide down a U-shaoed level of happiness and mental health throughout their lives ,‖Andrew Oswald at Britain’s Warwick University, who co-led the study, said on Tuesday.

The researchers analyzed data on depression, anxiety levels and general mental health and well-being taken from some 2 million people in 80 countries.

For men and women the probability of depression slowly builds and then peaks when people are in their forties ,the researchers said.

“It happens to men and women, to single and married people,to rich and poor ,and to those with and without children,‖ Oswald said . ―Nobody knows why this is so .‖

One possibility may be that people realize they won’t achieve much at middle age ,the researchers said.

Another reason could be that after seeing their middle –aged friends begin to

die ,people begin to value their own remaining years and embrace life once more.

But the good news is that if people make it to age 70 and are still physically fit ,they are on average as happy and mentally healthy as a 20-year old . ―For the average persons in the modern world, the dipin mental health and fifties do people emerge from this low period.‖

70. At about what age do people generally recover from depression

A. 40

B. 50

C. 60

D. 70

71. Which paragraph deals with the major topic of the news story?

A. paragraph one

B. paragraph two

C. paragraph three

The best thing to do when you are in the process of speech writing is to draw an outline of what you want to do .First ,write a one-sentence summary of what the speech should be about .Next , think of your audience, and picture the type of response and reaction you want to get. After figuring out these two things, write down in your first paragraph why you choose your particular speech topic and how it relates to your listeners. When doing this ,you want to get across the benefit of why these people should be listening to you ,After you get this part over, you want to go into the body of the speech.. In this section of your speech, you want to explain the theme of the speech.. Don’t be one dimensional in this part of the speech. , try and come across in different angles and perspectives so as not to discriminate (歧视)against some way your speech can be effective is by showing proof of your arguments. Lastly, your conclusion should be just as good as the body of your speech .Refer back to your introduction to write a powerful conclusion.
