My grandfather died more than twenty-five years ago. I was fifteen

then. He was kind, strong, fair, and very funny. When I was a young

musician, he

was my biggest fan. I played my violin for him when he visited,

and he loved everything, but each time he had one request. “Could you

play Amazing Grace?” he asked, full of hope and with a twinkle in his

!”

eye, because he knew my answer was always, “I don’t know that one

We went through this routine at ever y major holiday, and I always figured I’d have time to learn it

for him later.

About the time I entered high school and started guitar, Grandpa got cancer. The last time I

look

saw him alive was Thanksgiving weekend in 1985. My mom warned us that Grandpa didn’t

the same anymore and that we should prepare ourselves. For a moment I didn’t recognize him. H looked so small among all the white sheets. We had all gathered in Ohio for the holiday, and I

sure we all knew we were there to say good-bye. I can see now that Grandpa held on long enough

to see us each one more time. I remember how we ate in the dining room and laughed and talked

while Grandpa rested in his hospital bed. I wonder if it was sad for him to be alone with our voices

and laughter.Knowing Grandpa, he was probably content.

The next morning I found my moment alone with him. I pulled out my guitar, tuned to his

appreciative gaze, and finally played for him Amazing Grace. I had worked on it for weeks,

knowing it never mattered whether I actually played it well and choosing not to believe as I played

that it was my last concert for my biggest fan. The cancer had stolen his smile, but I saw joy in his

eyes. He held my hand afterward, and I knew I had done something important.

I argued with people all through college about my music major. I was told by strangers that

music wouldn’t make me any money and it wasn’t useful like being a doctor. But I know

first-hand that with music I was able to give my grandpa something at a point when no one else

could.

1.At first the author didn’t play

Amazing Grace for Grandpa because ________.

A.she hadn’t learned it yet

B.she found it difficult to play

C.she disliked playing it

D.her grandfather was just joking

2.From the last sentence in Paragraph 2 we can infer that Grandpa ________.

A.treasured love from family

B.was used to living alone

C.was too weak to feel anything

D.was optimistic about his health

B.knew she must play it well

C.brought him love and comfort

D.believed she could play it many times for him

A recent survey in the United States showed that the average family

spent more money on its pets than on its children. Although rather

shocking, it should not surprise anyone who has seen the doggy parlors

(客厅) where loved pets rest. Are Americans unique in treating their

little friends in this way? No, the English, too, pay more attention to

their pets.

This can clearly be seen when we look at pet foods, which often contain more vitamins than

human food. They certainly cost much. Last year the British public spent two hundred million

pounds on pet food alone, to say nothing of veterinary bills or animal furniture. It is difficult not to

feel angry about this when considering what the same amount could do for victims of starvation

and poverty, so it is not unusual for me to_get_hot_under_collar_when I read an old man left all

his money to his dog instead of his children.

There are a variety of reasons why I find pets-raising alarming. They cause physical problems.

An example of this is New York where they have great difficulty getting rid of the mess that dogs

leave on the streets. Many people find this funny, but in a number of large cities it is a major

problem. Animals can cause disease, too. It is the threat of rabies — a disease with no known cure.

Another problem is the carelessness of pet owners. Most little children want a dog or a cat,

and they continually push their mothers and fathers until they get on e. It is only when the “sweet

little thing” has been brought home that the parents realize how much time and money must be

spent on “Rover” or “Bonzo”. Then they just abandon it. As a result, they are allowed to run free.

English farmers lose hundreds of s heep a year, killed by someone’s pet and you must have read of

children being hurt by some pets of their own.

Lastly, I would only suggest that we have got our priorities wrong and that something should

time we stopped being sentimental about pets. I can see no

be done about it. In my view, it’s

reason why we should get upset when animals are cut up for medical experiments. This will lead

!”

us to discover cures for serious human diseases, and then I say, “Keep cutting

The principles about applying for jobs have altered greatly lately. In the past, people

preferred a hand-written application letter. However, nowadays it is becoming more and more

common to apply for a job through the Internet. You can find information on the Internet about

how to apply for jobs. Information can be found about how to fulfill your application letter, the

clothes that you should wear and how to carry out the interview itself.

The importance of body language is often mentioned, but doesn’t always get the attention it deserves. After all, before a word has even been spoken, your body language will have already

given people their first impression of you. Additionally, your body language will also give out a

lot more information. Based on your body language it can be seen if you are self-confident. It can

also show if you are a busy or a quiet type and it helps give an impression of whether you are

speaking truthfully or not. Body language can show how enthusiastic you are and if you are a nice

person, someone who will take his work seriously, but also someone who has a sense of humor

and can enjoy a joke from time to time. The members of the application committee will ask you

questions, but your answers won’t only be oral. The committee will not only pay attention to what

,and

you say, but also to how you say it! Body language will determine first if it “clicks”

sometimes all it takes is just a few seconds. Everybody uses body language, but it takes place

mostly at a subconscious (下意识的) level. Using body language appropriately, you can definitely

increase your chances of getting a job.

We have all seen nervous presenters in classrooms and meetings. One effect of being nervous

is moving from side to side. __1__ In fact the audience can lose interest in a speaker who does not

move.

How a speaker moves is important. Whole-body movement should be slow and planned to

command attention. Such movement helps to communicate confidence.

__2__ But they look at their notes on a paper or at the screen if they have an electronic

presentation.

With posture, the typical problem for new speakers is that they are often moving back and

ing the white board or the screen

forth, and they’re not facing the audience. They’ll often be fac

with slides and be talking to that rather than talking to the audience. The same thing with eye

contact with the audience, they find it really, really difficult, because they’ll be looking notes, they’ll be looking at their computer, they’ll be looking at the screen, or they will be looking at the floor. The problem of having notes and trying to talk from notes often is a big problem.

__3__ The best way to avoid this problem is to use images and few words for notes instead of

sentences. The image should help communicate the point you want to make. Writing a few words

with the image on your slide helps you remember that point. Then you can look at the audience

while speaking.

__4__ When you practice, remember these important tips: be aware of your posture, eye

contact, and gestures.

__5__ Then step by step, you’ll become an excellent speaker.

A.So they usually have eye contact with the audience.

B.So they have trouble with eye contact.

C.An important part of public speaking is practice.

D.New public speakers know that they should look at the audience while they speak.

E.A presenter does not need to stand perfectly still.

F.Improve your public speaking with body language.

G.Look for opportunities to speak and gain more confidence.
