Dear Editor,

When a new school term is about to begin, perhaps we should reconsider the matter of examinations. In July, two writers praised the cancellation (取消) of exams because they believe “Tests don’t tell the whole story”.

As a teacher who has worked in four countries, I have had the experience that a student who earns good marks is generally a good student, and that a student’s final mark in a subject is usually a grade average of the year’s work. Of course there are exceptions (例外), but they do not have the frequency (频率) that would give an unfair picture of a student’s ability.

The simple fact is that proper class work, diligent (= hardworking) exam studies, and good marks are almost certain indications (指示) of a student’s future performance. The opposite is, almost certainly, incompetence --- lacking the skill and ability to do a job successfully.

There is no acceptable replacement for competition of quality. How can teachers and future officials determine what a student has learned and remembered? Should we simply take the student’s mark for it? Any institution that “liberates” students from fair and formal exams is misleading (误导人的) , if not ignorant (无知), and surely the“graduates”of such institutions will lack trustworthiness (信赖),not to mention being rejected (= refused) by foreign universities for graduates or other studies.

When all is said and done, I sense that a fear of failure and a fear of unpleasant comparison with others are at the bottom of most of ban-exam talks. Excellence and quality fear nothing. On the contrary, they seek competition and desire the satisfaction of being the best.

I’d like you to consider my opinion and give some guidance.

Yours truly,

Li Hong

If you want to stay young, sit down and have a good think. This is the research finding of a team of Japanese doctors, who say that most of our brains are not getting enough exercise --- and as a result, we are growing old unnecessarily soon.

Professor Taiju Matsuzawa wanted to find out why quite healthy farmers in northern Japan appeared to be losing their ability to think and reason (推理) at a rather early age, and how the process of getting old could be slowed down.

With a team of researchers at Tokyo National University, he set about (= began) measuring brain volumes (体积) of a thousand people of different ages with different jobs.

Computer technology helped the researchers to get most exact measurements of the volume of the front and side parts of the brain, which have something to do with intellect (智力) and feelings, and decide the human character. As we all know, the back part of the brain, which controls tasks like eating and breathing, does not contract (萎缩) with age.

Contraction of front and side parts --- as cells die off --- was seen in some people in their thirties, but it was still not found in some sixty and seventy-year-olds.

Matsuzawa concluded from his tests that there is a simple way to prevent the contraction --- using the head.

The findings show that contraction of the brain begins sooner in people in the country than in the towns. Those with least possibility, says Matsuzawa, are lawyers, followed by university professors and doctors. White-collar workers doing the same work day after day in government offices are, however, as likely to have contracting brains as the farm worker, bus driver and shop assistant.

64. The team of doctors wanted to find out ______________________.

A.why certain people get old sooner than others

B. how to make people live longer

C. the size of certain people’s brains

D. which people are the most clever

65. Their research findings are based on _____________________.

A. an examination of farmers in northern Japan

B. tests given on a thousand old people

C. examining the brain volumes of different people

D. using computer technology

66. According to the passage, which people seem to get old slower than the others?

A. Lawyers

B. Farmers

C. Office workers

D. Shop assistants.

Tai Chi exercises can help people with Type 2 diabetes (糖尿病) control their condition, research suggests.

Two separate studies found a 12-week program of exercise was enough to improve the immune(免疫)system, and to cut blood sugar levels. The traditional Chinese martial art (武术) combines deep breathing and gentle movement to improve relaxation levels. Both studies, by researchers in Taiwan and Australia, appear in the British Journal of Sports Medicine

The first study, by a team in Taiwan, compared 30 people with diabetes with 30 healthy people acting as controls Over 12 weeks the participants learned 37 Tai Chi movements under the guidance of an expert, and took home a video to study the correct poses (姿势). They took part in three-hour-long sessions a week. At the end of the program, tests on the

group with Type 2 diabetes showed a drop in their blood sugar level, and an improvement in the level of cells and chemicals key to a healthy immune response.

Strenuous (过量的) physical activity is harmful to the immune system, but the latest study suggests that more appropriate exercise may have the opposite effect.

Previous research has suggested Tai Chi improves heart-related and breathing-related function, as well as improving flexibility (柔韧性) and relieving stress.

The second study by the University of Queensland, based on just 11 participants, produced similar results. In this study the participants --- who all had raised blood sugar levels --- attended sessions of Tai Chi for 60 to 90 minutes three times a week. As well as a drop in blood sugar levels, the participants lost weight, and recorded significant falls in blood pressure. Insulin resistance (胰岛素抗阻) was also improved. Participants also said they slept better, had more energy, felt less pain and had fewer food appetites (食欲) while on the program.

Cathy Moulton from Diabetes UK recommends that people with diabetes do at least 30 minutes of appropriate physical activity on at least five days of the week. She said, “Any activity that leaves you feeling warm and a little breathless but still able to hold a conversation counts as (算作) appropriate exercise --- including energetically cleaning the house, quickly walking the dog and of course Tai Chi, the relaxation element (要素) of which may help to reduce stress levels.”

There was something wrong with my computer yesterday. When(we are)in difficulty/When we meet with difficulties/When we have difficulties ,what we need is not to blame each other but to help each other. We should do something to prevent the spread of this disease. What can we do to prevent the spread of this disease? He is likely to get the driving license with his own efforts. 其实,学生对likely这个key word的使用也是会的,完全能够使用be likely to do或It’s likely th at… Shanghai has gone through…,it has become…,这已成为很多学生的一个习惯,句子和句子中随便用逗号隔开,英语不像中文,必须要考虑到句子的结构,逗号也不能随意使用。
