1:After the administration of lighthouses was taken over in 1852by the United States Lighthouse Board,an agency of the Treasury Department, the keeper corp gradually became highly professional.

It can be inferred from the passage that the Treasury Department, after assuming controlof the lighthouses, improved which of the following?

(A)The traing of the lighthouse

(B)The sturdiness of the lighthouses

(C)The visibility of the lights

(D)The locations of the lighthouses

2:Marths Graham’s territory of innumerable dances a nd a self-sufficient dance technique are a vast but closed territory, since to create and art out of one’s experience alone is ultimately a self-limiting act.According to the passage, which of the following most influenced Martha Graham’s dances and techniq ues?

(A)Her own experiences

(B)Exotic and idyllic themes

(C)Familiar classical stories

(D)The works of St. Denis

答案为(A)。

3:Each advance in microscopic technique has provided scientists with new perspectives on the function of living organisms and the nature of matter itself. The invention of the visible-light microscope late in the sixteenth century introduced a previously unknown realm of single-celled plants and animals. In the twentieth

century, electron microscope have provided direct views of viruses and minuscule surface structures. Now another type of microscope, one that utilizes X rays rather than light or electrons, offers a different way of examing tiny details;it should extend human perception still farther into the natural world.

Why does the author mention the visible-light microscope in the first paragraph?(A)To begin a discussion of sixteenth-century discoveries

(B)To put the X-ray microscope in a historical perspective

(C)To show how limited its uses are

(D)To explain how it functioned

The author implies that students of the Civil War usually concentrate on the

(A)home front

(B)battlefield

(C)government

(D)economy

5:With Robert Laurent and William Zorach, direct carving enters into the story of modern sculpture in the United States. Direct carving-in which the sculptors themselves carve stone or wood with mallet and chisel-must be recognized as something more than just a technique.Implicit in it is an aesthetic principle as well:

that the medium has certain qualities of beauty and expressiveness with which sculptors must bring their own aesthetic sensibilities into harmony. For

example, sometimes the shape or veing in a piece of stone or wood suggests, perhaps even dictates, not only the ultimate form, but even the subject matter.

What is one of the fundamental principles of direct carving?

(A)Asculptor must work with talented assistants.

(B)The subject of a sculpture should be derived from classical stories.

(C)The material is an important element in a sculpture.

(D)Designing a sculpture is a more creative activity than carving it.

(B)Their divers refused to work for the railroads.

(C)They began to specialize in transporting goods.

(D)They were not used as much as before.

The author used the phrase “”to illustrate “”?

7:By than time, three giant figures who had invented the new twentieth-century dance were dead:

Sergei Diaghilev,Anna Pavlova, and Isadora Duncan.Their era ended with them, and their dance values nearly disappeared. Their colleagues Michel Fokine and Ruth St. Denis lived on in America like whales on the beach.

In lines the above sentence, the author uses the phrase “like whales on the beach”to indicate that Fokine and St. Denis we re .

(A)good swimmers

(B)physically large

(C)out of place

(D)very sick

答案:

(C)

Both the number and the percentage of people in the United States involved in nonagricultural pursuits expanded rapidly during the half century following the civil war, with some of the most dramatic increases occurring in the domains of transportation, manufacturing, and trade and distribution. What can be inferred from the passage about the agricultural sector of the economy after the Civil War? (A) New technological developments had little effect on farmers. (B) The percentage of the total population working in agriculture declined. (C) Many farms destroyed in the war were rebuilt after the war. (D) Farmers achieved new prosperity because of better rural transportation.

2020 年托福阅读长难句100 句:后置定语从句 我们知道 一个句子的主干 ( 主谓宾 ) 相当于它的骨架,识别了主干相当于抓住 了句子的主要信息 ; 而句子的其他修饰、说明及补充的部分 ( 定状补同等 ) 则相当于句子的血肉,血肉中往往包含了大量的附加信息。很多时候这些附加的信息对整句的理解起着辅助、增强甚至不可或缺的作用。 教学中作者发现下面这个句子常常困扰一些语法功底不错的考生: The physicist rightly dreads preciseargument, since an argument that is convincing only if it is precise loses all its force if theassumptions on which it is based are slightly changed, whereas an argument thatis convincing though imprecise may well be stable under small perturbations ofits underlying assumptions. 本句 since 之前的部分含有标准的 S(The physicist)+V(dreads)+O(argument) 结构,而 since 之后明显应该是原因 状语 ( 从句 ) 的部分,所以句首的 SVO就是整句的主句。下面我们来仔 细分析 since 后面的部分: 第一行末尾的 that 紧跟 an argument 之后,显然做 an argument 的后置定语从句。 that is convincing 是一个完整的主系表结构, only if 则引导了这个定语从句自身的 ( 即小级别 ) 条件状语从句 it is precise (仍是一个完整的主系表结构); 接下来我们遇到了 loses ,since 到 loses 之间是两个主系表从句,有各自的系动词,于是 loses 不属于这两个从句,只能与 an argument 对应,这个点也可从单复数上佐证。 loses 与后面的 all its force 形成动宾结构,其中it指代前文的an argument;

"Sociologists have built on the distinction between expressive and instrumental ties to distinguish between two types of groups: primary and secondary. A primary group involves two or more people who enjoy a direct, intimate, cohesive relationship with one another. Expressive ties predominate in primary groups; we view the people as ends in themselves and valuable in their own right. A secondary group entails two or more people who are involved in an impersonal relationship and have come together for a specific, practical purpose. Instrumental ties predominate in secondary groups; we perceive people as means to ends rather than as ends in their own right. Sometimes primary group relationships evolve out of secondary group relationships." 很多同学,看到上面的“we view the people as ends in themselves”和“we perceive people as means to ends”就彻底晕菜了。 Humanity According to Kant, there are different ways to state what our duty is. One of them involves the idea of a law. Another involves the idea of humanity, or human reason. Morality says that you should never treat rational human beings merely as means to your end. Whenever you use someone’s skills or services to your own end, you should always also treat that person as an end in him- or herself.

It should be obvious that cetaceans–whales, porpoises, and dolphins–are mammals. They breathe through lungs, not through gills, and give birth to live young. Their streamlined bodies, the absence of hind legs, and the presence of a fluke and blowhole cannot disguise their affinities with land-dwelling mammals. However, unlike the cases of sea otters and pinnipeds (seals, sea lions, and walruses whose limbs are functional both on land and at sea), it is not easy to envision what the first whales looked like. 2. Which of the following can be inferred from paragraph 1 about early sea otters? &<61;It is not difficult to imagine what they looked like. &<61;There were great numbers of them. &<61;They lived in the sea only. &<61;They did not leave many fossil remains. However, unlike the cases of sea otters and pinnipeds…,由原文的unlike可知sea otters和pinnipeds两种动物与whales形成对比,而且很难想象原始的whales的样子;根据“一般对比推理”思路,可以推出“原始的sea otters的样子不难想象”。 Basic to any understanding of Canada in the 20 years after the Second World War is the country’s impressive population growth…. …It appeared that Canada was once more falling in step with the trend toward smaller families that had occurred all through the Western world since the time of the Industrial Revolution. … It can be inferred from the passage that before the Industrial Revolution

Look at the four squares (■) that indicate where the following sentences could be added to the passage. (考生会看到一个黑体的句子) Where would the sentence best fit?

Much of the water in a sample of water-saturated sediment or rock will drain from it if the sample is put in a suitable dry place.█But some will remain, clinging to all solid surfaces.█It is held there by the force of surface tension without which water would drain instantly from any wet surface, leaving it totally dry.█ The total volume of water in the saturated sample must therefore be thought of as consisting of water that can, and water that cannot, drain away.█ Look at the four squares [█] that indicate where the following sentence could be added to the passage. What, then, determines what proportion of the water stays and what proportion drains away? Where would the sentence best fit? Click on a square to add the sentence to the passage.

Paragraph 2: Speculation on the origin of these Pacific islanders began as soon as outsiders encountered them, in the absence of solid linguistic, archaeological, and biological data, many fanciful and mutually exclusive theories were devised. Many older theories implicitly deprecated the navigational abilities and overall cultural creativity of the Pacific islanders. For example, British anthropologists G. Elliot Smith and

Paragraph 3: Oil pools are valuable underground accumulations of oil, and oil fields are regions underlain by one or more oil pools. When an oil pool or field has been discovered, wells are drilled into the ground. Permanent towers, called derricks, used to be built to handle the long sections of drilling pipe. Now portable drilling machines are set up and are then dismantled and removed. When the well reaches a pool, oil usually rises up the well because of its density difference with water beneath it or because of the pressure of expanding gas trapped above it. Although this rise of oil is almost always carefully controlled today, spouts of oil, or gushers, were common in the past. Gas pressure gradually dies out, and oil is pumped from the well. Water or steam may be pumped down adjacent wells to help push the oil out. At a refinery, the crude oil from underground is separated into natural gas, gasoline, kerosene, and various oils. Petrochemicals such as dyes, fertilizer, and plastic are also manufactured from the petroleum. 6.Which of the following can be inferred from paragraph 3 about gushers? ○They make bringing the oil to the surface easier. ○They signal the pre sence of huge oil reserves. ○They waste more oil than they collect. ○They are unlikely to occur nowadays. 在第三段中的第六句uAlthough this rise of oil is almost always carefully controlled today, spouts of oil, or gushers, were common in the
