1.Summary of the main contents of the course

In this semester, I have learnt the Integrated Experimental Course of Business English, which aims to help us to improve our oral English and know more about etiquette in business field, preparing us for the coming career. Technically, this course contains seventeen chapters, including the introduction and the review in the end. There are several teaching videos in each chapter, as well as some questions for us to discuss. After learning every chapter, we also have a role play to practice what we have learned from the class. In this course, we chiefly learned course introduction, business reception and arrangement, telephone skills, making appointments and reservations, attending meetings, establishing business relationships, company presentation, product presentation, trade fair, job interview, responsibility and competence, making inquiry, placing an order, terms of payment, delivery.

2.What I have learned in the course

To begin with, I certainly have learnt lots of professional terms and authentic English expressions in business field. However, what I have learnt is definitely more than that. As I mentioned earlier, business English is more than English, it’s a much more eye-opening class. In the process of learning, we learn about some typical routines in business industry, which according to me, is a prerequisite for business English, personally speaking. You have to know the drill, then you can make up your mind what to do next. Put it another way, even if your spoken English is excellent, without any experience or knowledge about the business industry, you will still feel lost at work. Then I want to talk about oral English which obviously is an indispensable part of the course. In this course, we are asked to have a role play every class with a given script which provides a certain background. Through these tasks, we get play different roles and speak the appropriate English because we have to make sure my partners get the idea, or else, the conversation’s going to a dead end. And here’s one thing I remember pretty clear, that’s never hesitate to speak up,

expressing your ideas. It certainly can’t hurt when you give it a try, the truth is, sometimes others can still understand even you make a small mistake. What you have to do is to make sure you are 100 percent focused what’s on your mind, and then, spit it out. The more you try, the more naturally you get, then the more confident you are. It will be a virtuous circle after a while.

Last but not least, I’ve learnt a truth about myself. All this time, I’ve been in denial, walling myself off from any challenges to avoid failure. I take everything for granted, living a life with a go-with-it attitude without realizing I’ve been running away from the real life. After learning this course, I found that the only way to move forward in your life is taking a shot. You have to try, then you can know what you are capable of.

On the whole, this course obviously has a beneficial effect on college students, especially for English majors. Unlike other courses I’ve learned, this course, combining English and real life, focuses on utility, which would really make a difference to our career. Some people may consider this course boring, whereas I, thanks to the role play assigned by Professor Shen, think it’s intriguing. What’s more, it’s the role play that makes me realize that practice makes perfect. To be honest, at first, I thought it’s piece of cake to have a business conversation because from the video clips, all the words they use seem familiar to me. And yet when it comes to role play, it turns out this is way beyond me. Sometimes I can barely make a perfect presentation in Chinese, let alone English, because there are some many details to remember. Business English isn’t only about English ability, but also about your comprehensive business skills and knowledge. For me, the role paly is a brilliant idea, as well as the free discussion. Although we can only take online classes due to the pandemic, I have to admit this is the most incredible class I’ve ever had.

What’s more, it’s really convenient to go back to review what we’ve learned on account of the learning records, which saves me a lot of trouble making notes. Therefore, my suggestion about this course is maybe we can continue to implement this learning model after the pandemic, or combine the online class with the real-life teaching. And as for the discussing part, I reckon it would be better if there are more open questions.

At last, I would like to thank my teacher, Professor Shen, for his great efforts in preparing the classes and diversified teaching forms.
