Unit1

1. Not all the neighborhoods are empty, nor is every workplace a friendly playground. Most of us have had mixed experiences in these environments. Yet as one woman told me recently, she knows more about the people she passes on the way to her desk than on her way around the block. Our new sense of community hasn’s just moved from house to office building. The labels that we wear connect us with members from distant companies, cities, and states. We assume that have something “in common” with other teachers, nurses, city planners. ,

2. It’s not unlike the experience of our immigrant grandparents. Many who came to this country still identified themselves as members of the Italian community, the Irish community, the Polish community. They sought out and assumed connections with people from the old country. Many of us have updated that experience. We have replaced ethnic identity with professional identity, the way we replaced neighborhoods with the workplace. This whole realignment of community is surely most obvious among the mobile. In an age of specialists, they may have to search harder to find people who speak the same language. (Para.12)

Unit2

1. It is not enough for our university to resign itself to the status quo; it should speed up its development, and make itself one of the best universities in China. Onward and upward was the course she set. Small progress was no excuse for feeling satisfied with yourself. People who stopped to pat themselves on the back didn’t last long. Even if you got to the top, you’d better not take it easy. “The bigger they come, the harder they fall” was one of her favorite maxims. (Para.21)

2. It wasn’t the gin that was shouting. It was my mother. The gin only gave me the courage to announce to them that yes, by God, I had always believed in success, had always believed that without hard work and self-discipline you could never amount to anything, and didn’t deserve to. (Para.32)

3. So we chase it and equate it with wealth and success, without noticing that people who have those things aren’t necessarily happier.

5. It’s not wishing for what we don’t have, but cherishing what we do possess.

(4) It is commonly defined as a man and a woman bonded together through a socially approved covenant of marriage to regulate sexuality; to provide mutual care and support; to create a home economy; to bear, raise and protect children; and to maintain continuity between the generations.

(5) These alternatives appear to be rooted in human nature and represent the only enduring “choice”a society really has.

Unit9

Historically, the most obvious example of sex bias has been paying women less than men for doing the same work. Although unlawful, the practice is pervasive, and even now, after years of strong feminist (and other) efforts to correct this inequity, women still earn only seventy cents for every dollar earned by men. 70%。This is wage inequality, not to be confused with the glass ceiling, which denies women the opportunity to advance up the corporate ladder (which also, of course, impinges on wage increase).

Let’s say you’re a woman working as a publicity director for a large corporation, and you earn $35,000; your male counterpart, publicity director for another division of the same corporation, is earning $50,000. You and he have almost identical curriculum vitae —in fact, you went to the same college, worked together at another company, and then each of you got your “dream job.”(Para. (Para. 2)

Part C Directions: Read the following text carefully and then translate the underlined segments into Chinese. Your translation should be written neatly on the ANSWER SHEET. (10 points) It was only after I started to write a weekly column about the medical journals, and began to read scientific papers from beginning to end, that I realised just how bad much of the medical literature frequently was. I came to recognise various signs of a bad paper: the kind of paper that purports to show that people who eat more than one kilo of broccoli a week were 1.17 times more likely than those who eat less to suffer late in life from pernicious anaemia. (46) There is a great deal of this kind of nonsense in the medical journals which, when taken up by broadcasters and the lay press, generates both health scares and short-lived dietary enthusiasms. Why is so much bad science published? A recent paper, titled “The Natural Selection of Bad Science”, published on the Royal Society’s open science website, attempts to answer this intriguing and important question. It says that the problem is not merely that people do bad science, but that our current system of career advancement positively encourages it. What is important is not truth, but publication, which has become almost an end in itself. There has been a kind of inflationary process at work: (47) nowadays anyone applying for a research post has to have published twice the number of papers that would have been required for the same post only 10 years ago. Never mind the quality, then, count the number. (48) Attempts have been made to curb this tendency, for example, by trying to incorporate some measure of quality as well as quantity int o the assessment of an applicant’s papers. This is the famed citation index, that is to say the number of times a paper has been quoted elsewhere in the scientific literature, the assumption being that an important paper will be cited more often than one of small account. (49) This would be reasonable if it were not for the fact that scientists can easily arrange to cite themselves in their future publications, or get associates to do so for them in return for similar favours. Boiling down an individual’s o utput to simple metrics, such as number of publications or journal impacts, entails considerable savings in time, energy and ambiguity. Unfortunately, the long-term costs of using simple quantitative metrics to assess researcher merit are likely to be quite great. (50) If we are serious about ensuring that our science is both meaningful and reproducible, we must ensure that our institutions encourage that kind of science.

A Working Community 5、None of us, mind you, was born into these communities. Nor did we move into them, U-Hauling our possessions along with us. None has papers to prove we are card-carrying members of one such group or another. Yet it seems that more and more of us are identified by work these days, rather than by street. 6、In the past, most Americans live in neighborhoods. We were members of precincts or parishes or school districts. My dictionary still defines communtiy, first of all in geographic terms, as “a body of people who live in one place.” 7、But today fewer of us do our living in that one place; more of us just use it for sleeping. Now we call our towns “bedroom suburbs,” and many of us, without small children as icebreakers, would have trouble naming all the people on our street. 8、It’s not that we are more isolated today. It’s that many of us have transferred a chunk of our friendships, a major portion o f our everyday social lives, from home to office. As more of our neighbors work away from home, the workplace becomes our neighborhood. 9、The kaffeeklatsch of the fifties is the coffee break of the eighties. The water cooler, the hall, the elevator, and the parking lot are the back fences of these neighborhoods. The people we have lunch with day after day are those who know the running saga of our mother’s operations, our child’s math grades, our frozen pipes, and faulty transmissions.50年代的下午茶成了80年代的喝咖啡的工间休息。 10、We may be strangers at the supermarket that replaced the corner grocer, but we are known at the coffee shop in the lobby. We share with each other a cast of characters from the boss in the corner office to the crazy lady in Shipping, to the lovers in Marketing. It’s not surprising that when researchers ask Americans what they like best about work, they say it is “the shmoose factor.” When they ask young mothers at home what they miss most about work, it is the people. 11、Not all the neighborhoods are empty, nor is every workplace a friendly playground. Most of us have had mixed experiences in these environments. Yet as one woman told me recently, she knows more about the people she passes on the way to her desk than on her way around the block. Our new sense of community hasn’t just moved from house to office building. The labels that we wear connect us with me mbers from distant companies, cities, and states. We assume that we have something “in common” with ot her teachers, nurses, city planners. 12、It’s not unlike the experience of our imm igrant grandparents. Many who came to this country still identified themselves as members of the Italian community, the Irish communtiy, the Polish community. They sought out and assumes connection with people from the old country, Many of us have updated that experience. We have replaced ethnic identity with professional identity, the way we replaced neighborhood with the workplace. This whole realignment of community is surely most obvious among the mobile professions. People who move from city to city seem to put roots into their professions. In an age of specialists, they may have to search harder to find people who speak the same language. 13、I don’t think that there is anything massively disruptive about this shifting sense of community. The continuing search for c onnection and shared enterprise is very human. But I do feel uncomfortable with our shifting identity. The balance has tipped, and we seem increasingly dependent on work for our sense of self. 14、If our office are our new neighborhoods, if our professional titles are our new ethnic tags, then how do we separate ourselves from our jobs? Selfworth isn’t just something to measure in the marketplace. But in these new communities, it be comes harder to tell who we are without saying what we do.

注意: a.

Sleep is very ancient. In the electroencephalographic sense we share it with all the primates and almost all the other mammals and birds: it may extend back as far as the reptiles. There is some evidence that the two types of sleep, dreaming and dreamless, depend on the life-style of the animal, and that predators are statistically much more likely to dream than prey, which are in turn much more likely to experience dreamless sleep. In dream sleep, the animal is powerfully immobilized and remarkably unresponsive to external stimuli. Dreamless sleep is much shallower, and we have all witnessed cats or dogs cocking their ears to a sound when apparently fast asleep. The fact that deep dream sleep is rare among prey today seems clearly to be a product of natural selection, and it makes sense that today, when sleep is highly evolved, the stupid animals are less frequently immobilized by deep sleep than the smart ones. But why should they sleep deeply at all? Why should a state of such deep immobilization ever have evolved? Perhaps one useful hint about the original function of sleep is to be found in the fact that dolphins and whales and aquatic mammals in general seem to sleep very little. There is, by and large, no place to hide in the ocean. Could it be that, rather than increasing an animal's vulnerability, the function of sleep is to decrease it? Wilse Webb of the University of Florida and Ray Meddis of London University have suggested this to be the case. It is conceivable that animals who are too stupid to be quiet on their own initiative are, during periods of high risk, immobilized by the implacable arm of sleep. The point seems particularly clear for the young of predatory animals. This is an interesting notion and probably at least partly true.

Adults Also Need to Read Children’s Books 1.People’s views about whether adults should read children’s books vary from person to person. 2. A majority of people think that adults shouldn’t read children’s books. In their views, children’s literature is special ly written for children, so children read children’s books. There are special books for adults. So it goes without saying that adults shouldn’t read kids’ books. 3.On the contrary, some people differ in their opinions on this matter. They hold the idea that adults also need to read children’s books. In their point of view, on the one hand, adults are actually children’s lead author. It is completely adults business to choose or buy a book especially for baby children. If you have little or even no knowledge a bout children’s literature, it is impossible to bring good, valuable books to children who couldn’t read and just listen to you to tell stories. On the other hand, though children’s literature is occurred for children, once a literary composition is written, it actually faces all kinds of people. When an adult read it, he can satisfy his want, enjoyment, sensation and conformation from his angle with his own life history and experience accumulation. Therefore, there is no doubt that adults also need to read children’s books. 4.As far as I concerned, I firmly hold out the latter opinion. I am in favor that adults also need to read children’s books. To Lie or Not to Lie 1.There is a widespread concern over lying. It is well known that the opinion concerning this hot topic varies from person to person. 2.Some people think that we shouldn’t tell lies. To be a human being, you should be honest. Starting from a child, we have already been told that people should be honest, lies mean cheating. It is the most sincere essence of human nature to be honest. 3.However, some other people hold that we should tell lies. With our age increasing, we just find that many things break with the education we have had. In real life, it is impossible for a person to be genuinely honest. Speaking honest words, it may not only hurt friends or classes, but also make ourselves sad. However, everyone would be happy if you say a lie. Gradually, we find that sometimes we need some white lies to eclipse and console ourselves in real life. So we should learn to be dishonest on a proper occasion. 4.Should we insist to be honest? “Yes” is a good answer. Dishonesty means lying, which is considered an immoral activity. “No” is also a fine answer. It is clear that sometimes dishonest words are happier accep ted and make the relations better. 5.As far as I concerned, I think that every person has his own principle of life. As a common person, we cannot be an entire honest, but be a reliable and sincerity one. Should we strive for status? 1.There is a widespread concern over status. It is well known that the opinion concerning this hot topic varies from person to person. 2.Status is one’s rank in comparison with others in the same social group. A person with high status is one who is well regarded by friends and ass ociates. People may be obsessed with rank, but we’re not always in conflict over it. Several factories can give a person high status in society. These include wealth, social standing, advanced education, and a prestigious occupation. We are all familiar with status symbols such a Cadillac or a mansion. Since these familiar symbols of status all cost money, it is common to mistake a striving for status as a drive to accumulate wealth. However, self-realization defined as “the desire to become more what one i s, to become everything one is capable of” is the original intention of striving for status. People should view work as something to be done in order to feel complete as a person to fulfill a personal philosophy. In fact, once we work out who’s higher and lower, we often relax and get along quite well. If a person can do this he may feel that he or his work is worthwhile and respected. Such people find their life and work intrinsically interesting and satisfying. On this occasion, we should have a positive attitude toward striving for status! My Understanding of True Love 1.The simple four characters of “LOVE” have profound meanings. 2.“L” means loyalty. Loyalty is essential for lovers. Without loyalty, there won’t be true love any more. Both lovers should devote your whole love into each other and be responsible for your love. Loyalty is an absolutely necessary content to true love. “O” means obligation. If I love you, I would obligate to most of
