When I was nine years old living in a small town in North Carolina, I found an ad for selling greeting cards in the back of a children’s magazine. I thought to myself I could do this. I begged my mother to let me send for a full set of goods. Two weeks later when the cards arrived, I tore off the brown paper wrapper, seized the cards and dashed out of the house. Three hours later, I returned home with no card and a pocket full of money announcing, “Mum, all the people couldn’t wait to buy my cards!” A salesperson was born.
When I was twelve years old, my father took me to see Zig Ziegler. I remember sitting in that dark lecture hall listening to Mr. Ziegler raise everyone’s spirits up to the ceiling. I left there feeling like I could do anything. When we got to the car, I turned to my father and said, “Dad, I want to be a motivational (激励斗志的) speaker just like Mr. Ziegler.” A dream was born.
Recently I began following my dream of motivating others. After a four-year relationship with a major fortune 100 company（财富百强企业）beginning as a sale trainer and ending as a regional sale manager, I decide to leave the company at the height of my career.
I made my decision to start my own company and leave my secure position after attending a regional sales meeting. The vice-president of our company delivered a speech that changed my life. He asked us, “If an angel would grant（答应）you three wishes, what would they be?” After giving us a moment to write down the three wishes, he then asked us, “Why do you need an angel?” I would never forget the power I felt at that moment. I realized that everything I had accomplished
--- the graduate degree, the successful sales career, speaking engagements, training and managing for a fortune 100 company had prepared me for this moment.
Having made that decision, I was immediately tested. One week after I gave notice, my husband was laid off (下岗) from his job, which made our financial situation really tough. It was inviting to turn back to my former company, knowing they wanted me to stay but I was certain that if I went back, I would never leave. I decided I still wanted to move forward rather than end up with a mouth full of “if only” later on.
When I held fast to my dream, even during the tough times, the miracles really began to happen. In a short time period my husband found a better job, and I was able to book several speaking engagements with new customers. A motivational speaker was finally born!

Nelson Mandela's greatest pleasure, his most private moment, was watching the sun set with the music of Handel or Tchaikovsky playing.
Locked up in his cell during daylight hours, deprived of (被剥夺) music, both these simple pleasures were denied him for decades. With his fellow prisoners, concerts were organized when possible, particularly at Christmas time, where they would sing. Nelson Mandela found music very encouraging, and took a keen interest not only in European classical music but also in African choral music and the many talents in South African music. But one voice stood out above all --- that of Paul Robeson, whom he described as our hero.
The years in jail reinforce (加强) habits that were already formed: the disciplined diet of an athlete began in the 1940s, as did the early morning exercise. Even when he was over 80, Nelson Mandela would be up by 4:30 am, no matter how late he had worked the previous evening. By 5 am he had begun his exercise routine that lasted at least an hour. Breakfast was by 6:30, when the day’s newspapers were read. The day’s work would begin.
With a standard working day of at least 12 hours, time management was critical and Nelson Mandela was extremely impatient with unpunctuality (不守时), regarding it as rude to those you are dealing with. When speaking of the extensive traveling he had undertaken since his release from prison, Nelson Mandela said: “I was helped when preparing for my release by the biography of Pandit Nehru, who wrote of what happens when you leave jail.
My daughter Zinzi says that she grew up without a father, who, when he returned, became a father of the nation. This has placed a great responsibility of my shoulders. And wherever I travel,
I immediately begin to miss the familiar --- the mine dumps, the colour and smell that is uniquely South African, and, above all, the people. I do not like to be away for any length of time. For me, there is no place like home.”

Treasure hunts have excited people’s imagination for hundreds of years both in real life and in books such as Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. Kit Williams, a modern writer, had the idea of combining the real excitement of a treasure hunt with clues found in a book when he wrote a children’s story,Masquerade, in 1979. The book was about a hare (兔子), and a month before it came out Williams buried a gold hare in a park in Bedfordshire. The book contained a large number of clues to help readers find the hare, but Williams put in a lot of “red herrings”, or false clues, to mislead them.
Ken Roberts, the man who found the hare, had been looking for it for nearly two years. Although he had been searching in the wrong area most of the time, he found it by logic (逻辑), not by luck. His success came from the fact that he had gained an important clue at the start. He had realized that the words: “One of Six to Eight” under the first picture in the book connected the hare in some way to Katherine of Aragon, the first of Henry VIII’s six wives. Even here, however, Williams had succeeded in misleading him. Ken knew that Katherine of Aragon had died at Kimbolton in Cambridgeshire in 1536 and thought that Williams had buried the hare there. He had been digging there for over a year before a new idea occurred to him. He found out that Kit Williams had spent his childhood near Ampthill, in Bedfordshire, and thought that he must have buried the hare in a place he knew well, but he still could not see the connection with Katherine of Aragon, until one day he came across two stone crosses in Ampthill Park and learnt that they had been built in her honor in 1773.
Even then his search had not come to an end. It was only after he had spent several nights digging around the cross that he decided to write to Kit Williams to find out if he was wasting his time there. Williams encouraged him continue, and on February 24th, 1982, he found the treasure. It was worth ￡ 3000 in the beginning, but the excitement it had caused since its burial made it much more valuable.
