They Say Ireland’s the Best

Ireland is the best place in the world to live in for 2005, according to a life quality ranking th at appeared in Britain’s Economist magazine 1ast week.

The ambitious attempt to compare happiness levels around the world is based on the principle that wealth is not the only measure of human satisfaction and well-being.The index of 111 countries uses data on incomes, health, unemployment, climate, political stability, job security, gender equality as well as what the magazine calls “freedom, family and community life”.

Despite the bad weather, troubled health service, traffic congestion(拥挤),gender inequality, and the high cost of living.Ireland scored an impressive 8.33 points out of 10.That put it well ahead of second-place Switzerland, which managed 8.07.Zimbabwe, troubled by political insecurity and hunger,is rated the gloomiest(最差的),picking up only 3. 89points.

“Although rising incomes and increased individual choices are highly valued,”the report said “some of the factors associated with modernization such as the breakdown(崩溃)in traditional institutions and family values in part take away from a positive impact.”

“Ireland wins because it successfully combines the most desirable elements of the new with the preservation of certain warm elements of the old, such as stable family and community l ife.”

The magazine admitted measuring quality of life is not a straightforward thing to do, and that its findings would have their critics.

No.2 on the list is Switzerland. The other nations in the top 10 are Norway,Luxembourg,Sweden,Australia,Iceland,Italy,Denmark and Spain. The UK is positioned at No.29,a much lower position chiefly because of the social and family breakdown recorded in official statistics. The US, which has the second highest per capita GDP(人均国内生产总值)after Luxembourg, took the 13th place in the survey.China was in the lower half of the league at 60th.

Estee Lauder Died

1 The child of Central European immigrants who created an international cosmetics(化妆品)empire and became one of the most influential women in US,has died on Saturday. Estee Lauder died at her home in Manhattan,New York City,a company spokeswoman said. She was 97.

2 Born in Queens, New York in 1908, Lauder was the daughter of a Hungarian mother and a Czech father.

3 Lauder began her business career by selling skincare products developed by her uncle John Schotz,a chemist,to beauty salons(美容院)and hotels. In 1930,she married Joseph Lauder who became her partner. The company, which became known as Estee Lauder, took off after World War II.

4 In 1953,the company introduced its first perfume(香水),Youth Dew,the first of

a range of fragrances that has now grown to more than 70.They include:Aramis,a line of products for men, launched in 1964;and Clinique,a range of odourless(无嗅的)cosmetics, which followed in 1968.

5 By the time she retired in 1995,Lauder was presiding over a multibillion-dollar enterprise, which now ranks number 349 in the Fortune 500 list of largest US companies. In 1998, she was the only woman to feature in Time magazine’s selection of the 20 most important business geniuses of the last century. There were two secrets to

her success: her gift for selling things and her tireless energy and determination never to accept second best.

6 Even after her retirement at the age of 89,Lauder remained closely involved.Beauty, Lauder believed, was the most important thing in life.

7 She wrote in her 1985 autobiography, “Estee,a Success Story”:“In a perfect world, we’d all be judged on the sweetness of our souls . But in our less than perfect world, the woman who looks pretty has a distinct advantage and, usually, the last word.”

第一篇Storms Sink Ships

Rescuers have found the bodies of over 130 people killed in two ferry disasters in Bangladesh. The accidents happened during a storm that hit the country on April 21.Hundreds more are missing or feared dead.

The two ferries sank in different rivers near the capital city of Dhaka as strong winds

and rain hit the South Asian country.

The government has since banned a11 ferries and other boats from travelling at night during the April-May stormy season.

One of the ferries, MV Mitali, was carrying far more people than it was supposed to.About 400 passengers fitted into a space made for just 300,police said The second ferry carried about 100 passengers.

“The number of deaths is certain to rise,”said an official in charge of the rescue work.“No one really knows how many people were on board t he ferry or how many of them survived.”

Ferries in Bangladesh don’t always keep passenger lists, making it difficult to determine the exact number of people on board.

Besides the ferry accidents,at least 40 people were killed and 400 injured by lightning strikes, falling houses and trees and the sinking of small boats.Storms are common this time of year in Bangladesh, as are boating accidents.Ferry disasters take away hundreds of lives every year in a nation of 130 million people.Officials blame these river accidents on a lack of safety measures, too many passengers in boats and not enough checks on weather conditions.

Ferries are a common means of transport in Bangladesh. It is a country covered by about 230 rivers. Some 20,000 ferri es use the nation’s waterways(水路)every year. And many of them are dangerously overcrowded(过度拥挤).

第二篇Saving Money

Where you save your money often depends on what you are saving for. If you are saving to buy a CD (光盘) or to go to a concert, then probably you would keep your money somewhere in your room.

If you are saving for a big purchase like a mountain bike or a school trip, where would you save your money?

One place to save money is the bank. Putting your money in a savings account will help your money earn more money. If you put your money in a piggy bank (猪形储蓄罐),one year later you'll still have the same amount of money you put in. If you put your money in a savings account, one year later, you'll have more money than you put in. Why?

When you keep your money in a bank, your money earns interest. Interest is an amount of money a bank pays you to use your money. The bank uses your money (and the money of other people, too) to loan money to people and businesses.

The bank will send you a statement several times a year. A bank statement tells you how much money you have in your account. It also tells you how much interest you have earned. If you leave your money in the bank, you can watch it grow!

Another way you can save money is to buy a certificate of deposit or CD. If you have some money that you don't need to use for a long time, this is a good way to make your money grow.

You can buy a CD at a bank. You agree not to use the money for a certain period of time. That period might be from six months to five years. You can't touch your money during that time. If you do,you must pay a penalty,or fee.

36 Your money will earn more money if you put it

A in your room.

B in a piggy bank.

C in your pocket.

D in a savings account

37 A bank pays you interest for

A wasting your money.

B losing your money.

C using your money.

D decreasing your money

38 Among other things,a bank statement tells you

A the amount of money you have in the bank

B the current rates of interest.

C the current rates of exchange.

D the best way to save your money.

39 If you draw your money before it is due,you will have to

A pay interest to the bank.

B close your account.

C open a new account.

D pay a penalty or fee.

40 The word “touch”in paragraph 7 could be best replaced by

A “deposit”

B “lend”

C “use”

D “cash”

第三篇Two People,Two Paths

You must be familiar with the situation:Dad’s driving,Mum’s telling him where to go.He’s sure that they need to turn left But she says it’s not for another two blocks.Who has the better sense of direction? Men or women.

They both do, a new study says.but in different ways.

Men and women.Canadian researchers have found, have different methods of finding their way.Men look quickly at landmarks(地标)and head off in what they think is the right direction.Women, however, try to picture the whole route in detail and then follow the path in their head.

“women tend to be more detailed,”said Edward Cornell.who led the study, “while men

tend to be a little bit faster and …a little bit more intuitive(直觉感知的).”

In fact, said Cornell, “sense of direction”isn’t one skill but two.

The first is the “survey method” .This is when you see all area from above, such as a printed map.Y0u can see,for example, where the hospital is,where the church is and that the supermarket is on its right.

The second skill is the “route method”. This is when you use a series of directions. You start from the hospital, then turn left, turn fight,go uphill——and then you see the supermarket.Men are more likely to use the survey method while women are more likely to use one route and follow directions.

Both work, and neither is better.

Some scientists insist that these different skills have a long history. They argue it is because of the difference in traditional roles.

In ancient times, young men often went far away with the older men to fish or hunt. The trip took hours or days and covered unfamiliar places. The only way to know where you were was to use the survey method to remember landmarks—the mountains, the lakes and so on.

The women,on the other hand, took young girls out to find fruits and plants. These activities were much closer to home but required learning well-used paths. So, women’s sense of space was based on learning certain routes.

41 When finding his way, Dad tends to rely on

A his intuitive knowledge.

B his book knowledge.

C Mum’s assistance.

D the police’s assistance.

42 Women are more likely to use

A the survey method.

B the traditional method.

C the route method.

D the right method.

43 Which works better, the route method or the survey method?

A The survey method.

B The route method.

C Either.

D Neither.

44 Which of the following is NOT a landmark?

A A long river.

B A high mountain.

C A magnificent church.

D A path in your head.

45 Women developed a sense of space out of the need

A to go fishing.

B to go hunting.

C to learn well-used paths.

D to go swimming.

2016年职称英语综合类新增文章

2016年职称英语教材综合类新增文章 第二篇Common Questions about Dreams Does everyone dream? Yes. Research shows that we all dream. We have our most vivid dreams during a type of sleep called Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. During REM sleep, the brain is very active. The eyes move quickly back and forth1 under the lids, and the large muscles of the body are relaxed. REM sleep occurs every 90-100 minutes, three to four times a night, and it lasts longer as the night goes on. ___1___ We dream at other times during the night, too, but those dreams are less vivid. Do people remember their dreams? A few people remember their dreams. However, most people forget nearly everything that happened during the night — dreams, thoughts, and the short periods of time when they were awake. ___2___ It seems that the memory of the dream is not totally lost, but for some reason it is very hard to bring it back2. If you want to remember your dream, the best thing to do is to write it down as soon as you wake up. Are dreams in color? Most dreams are in color. However, people may not be aware of it for two reasons :They don’t usually remember the details of their dreams, or they don’t notice the color because it is such a natural part of our lives. ___3___ Do dreams have meaning? Scientists continue to debate this issue.3 ___4___ Some people use dreams to help them learn more about their feelings, thoughts, behavior, motives, and values. Others find that dreams can help them solve problems. It’s also true that artists, writers, and scientists often ge t creative ideas from dreams. How can I learn to understand my dreams? The most important thing to remember is that your dreams are personal. The people, actions, and situations in your dreams reflect your experience, your thoughts, and your feelings. Some dream experts believe that there are certain types of dreams that many people have, even if they come from different cultures or time periods. Usually, however, the same dream will have different meanings for different people. For example, an elephant in a dream may mean one thing to a zookeeper and something very different to a child whose favorite toy is a stuffed elephant. ___5___ Then look for links between your dreams and what is happening in your daily life. If you think hard and you are patient, perhaps the meaning of your dreams will become clearer to you.

Musical Robot Companion Enhances Listener Experience Shimi, a musical companion developed by Georgia Tech’s Center for Music Technology, recommends songs, dances to the beat and keeps the music pumping based on listener feedback. The smartphone-enabled, one-foot-tall robot is billed as an interactive “musical friend”. “Shimi is designed to change the way that people enjoy and think about their music,” said Professor Gil Weinberg, the robot’s creator. He will unveil the robot at the June 27th Google I/O conference in San Francisco. A band of three Shimi robots will perform for guests, dancing in sync with music created in the lab and composed according to its movements. Shimi is essentially a docking station with a “brain” powered by an Android phone. Once docked, the robot gains the sensing and musical generation capabilities of the user’s mobile device. In other words, if there’s an “app” for that, Shimi is ready. For instance, by using the phone’s camera and face-detecting software,Shimi can follow a listener around the room and position its “ears”,or speakers, for optimal sound. Another recognition feature is based on rhythm and tempo. If the user taps a beat, Shimi analyzes it, scans the phone’s musical library and immediately plays the song that best matches the suggestion. Once the music starts,Shimi dances to the rhythm. “Many people think that robots are limited by their programming instructions, said Music Technology Ph. D. candidate Mason Bretan. “Shimi shows us that robots ca n be creative and interactive. ’’Future apps in the works will allow the user to shake their head in disagreement or wave a hand in the air to alert Shimi to skip to the next song or increase/decrease the volume. The robot will also have the capability to recommend new music based on the user’s song choices and provide feedback on the music play list. Weinberg hopes other developers will be inspired to create more apps to expand Shimi’s creative and interactive capabilities. “I believe that our center is ahead of a revolution that will see more robots in homes.” Weinberg said. Weinberg is in the process of commercializing Shimi through an exclusive licensing agreement with Georgia Tech. Weinberg hopes to make the robot available to consumers by the 2013 holiday season. “If robots are going to arrive in homes, we think that they will be this kind of machines一 small, entertaining and fun,,,Weinberg said. “They will enhance your life and pave the way for more intelligent service robots in our lives.” 词汇: pump v.用抽水机抽;不断播放(音乐) scan v.扫描;浏览 skip v.轻跳,跳跃 sync n.同步,同时;v.使同步 tempo n.速度;节奏 注释:

Ebola is a dangerous and often lethal viral infection. Scientists believe that humans contracted the virus by eating the meat of rare animals. It is now believed that bats are the primary carries of the virus. 2 To date, there are only three major countries in West Africa experiencing a major outbreak: Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea. However, other countries such as Nigeria have reported confirmed cases of Ebola within their borders. 3 Unless you recently visited one of the three affected West countries you risk of contracting the virus is virtually zero. Unlike other recent airborne virus outbreaks like SARS, the Ebola virus can only be spread through direct contact with an infected person. Specifically, Ebola is spread through contact with body fluids. Though, the virus is transmittable, only an infected person exhibiting symptoms is communicable. 4 The signs and symptoms of Ebola are non-specific and patients typically exhibit them after a week of contracting the virus. Symptoms may appear as early as two days or as late as three weeks after initial infection. Symptoms include disgust, weakness and stomach pain. More uncommon symptoms include chest pain, bleeding and sore throat. 5 Ebola is devastating because of its ability to attack and replicate in every organ of the body. This causes an overstimulation of the body’s inflammatory response, causing the flu-like symptoms. The virus also causes bleeding and impairs the body's normal clotting mechanism (凝血机制), making bleeding even more severe. Loss of blood volume and decreased organ perfusion (器官灌注)ultimately lead to organ failure and death. 6 The current outbreak is the deadliest viral outbreak in over 35 years. While diseases such as the malaria (疟疾) are far more communicable, Ebola is one of the world’s most fatal viral infections. Ebola's fatality rate exceeds that of SARS. 23. paragraph 2___D____ 24. paragraph 3____A___ 25. paragraph 4___C____ 26. paragraph 5___E____ A. Am I at risk ofcontracting the virus? B. is the currentoutbreak the deadliest? C. How do know ifhave contracted the virus? D. What areas arecurrently affected? E. What exactlydoes Ebola do to the body? F. What caused theEbola outbreak?
