My name is Jamie and I'm going to tell you about some really cool inventions that people made by looking at the natural world around us. Nature is amazing and full of incredible designs that have inspired lots of human inventions over the years. Let me give you some examples!One of my favorite nature-inspired inventions is velcro. Have you ever seen those prickly burrs that get stuck to your clothes or a dog's fur when you go hiking? In the 1940s, a Swiss engineer named George de Mestral took a close look at these burrs under a microscope after they got stuck to his pants and his dog's fur on a hike. He noticed that the burrs had thousands of tiny hooks that caught onto the loops in the fabric. This gave him the idea for velcro - one side has stiff hooks, while the other has soft loops, and when you press them together, they stick! Velcro is used all over the place, from shoes to jackets to wallets. All thanks to studying those pesky burrs.Another awesome nature-inspired invention is the bullet train. The bullet train is a super-fast railway that can travel over 200 miles per hour! But do you know what gave engineers theidea? Birds! When engineers were first designing thesehigh-speed trains back in the 1960s, they ran into an issue. Whenever the trains would come out of a tunnel, they would make a loud "boom" sound from the built-up air pressure. This "tunnel boom" effect caused a lot of noise pollution and scared animals nearby. Then one engineer realized that certain birds like the kingfisher don't make loud noises when diving into water to catch fish from the air. Upon closer study, they discovered that the kingfisher's beak is perfectly streamlined to part the water with minimal disturbance. Using that bird's sleek design as a model, the engineers reshaped the front of the bullet trains to be more aerodynamic like the kingfisher's beak. This minimized the loud "tunnel boom" effect, making the trains much quieter.How about airplanes? You may have noticed that airplane wings are curved on top but flat on the bottom. This design was inspired by observing bird wings. The curvature on top creates an area of low pressure, which helps generate lift and keeps the plane in the air. Many birds' wings work the same way. Airplanes also have a sleek, streamlined shape to reduce air drag, just like birds and fish that can slip through the air and water easily. Even the first airplane designs by the Wright brothers took heavy inspiration from studying birds and how they fly. Nature was the original aircraft engineer!Have you ever gone snorkeling or scuba diving and noticed those full-body swimsuits made of neoprene? The design of those wetsuits was inspired by seals and whales. These marine animals have a thick layer of fat called blubber that insulates their bodies and keeps them warm in freezing cold waters. Wetsuits mimic this blubber-like layer to trap a thin film of water between your body and the suit, which your body then heats up to stay toasty while swimming. Talk about taking style tips from seals!One last example is Kevlar, the super-tough material used in bulletproof vests and lots of sports equipment. Kevlar's structure was inspired by the design of spider silk, which is crazy strong for its weight - even stronger than steel! Spider silk gets its incredible toughness from its cross-linked molecular structure. By arranging the molecules in Kevlar in a similar cross-linked pattern, scientists created an synthetic fiber that is five times stronger than steel! Who would have thought that studying how a tiny spider makes its silk could lead to materials that protect people's lives?There are so many more examples like sonar inspired by bats and dolphins, harvesting water from air like the desert beetle does, and even Velcro-like pads that let geckos walkupside-down. Whenever you look at the designs in nature, it's incredible to see millions of years of "field testing" through evolution. Plants, animals and other organisms have adapted super efficient ways to move, catch food, conserve water, protect themselves and more. By taking inspiration from thesebattle-tested biological designs, we can create new technologies to solve human problems too. Nature has given us an amazing source of ideas - all we have to do is pay close attention!So the next time you're outside, whether in your backyard or at a park, take a moment to observe all the plants and critters around you. So I put away the books, Michael stores the pretend kitchen set, and Chloe sets down her drumsticks. The block area is always the biggest disaster but ifwe all pitch in, we can click those plastic bricks back into the containers in no time.Once everything is all cleaned up, we gather back on the colorful rug for storytime and songs before our parents arrive to pick us up. Mrs. Parker reminds us to listen and pay attention, just like we do during lessons. I think storytime is the best part of the day! We get to hear such fun stories about talking pigs, chocolatey dreams, and silly monsters. We also sing all our favorite songs with the hand motions like "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" and "The Wheels on the Bus." I don't know why but hearing those songs never gets old.All too soon, parents begin arriving at the classroom door. My friends and I give each other big hugs and high fives before skipping out to meet our families. I'm always a little sad that another day of fun has come to an end. Theymake the dolls and animals talk to each other in littlehigh-pitched voices and have them act out stories and go on adventures. I think playing with dolls sounds kind of boring, but they sure seem to have fun doing it!When it's a nice day outside, some kids even open the classroom windows so we can throw things out or stick our heads out. Frank is always tossing paper airplanes out the window to see how far they'll go. And Amy sticks her head out and makes animal noises at people walking by, which makes everybody laugh really hard. I tried doing that once but I got in big trouble!There are a couple of kids who don't play or run around after class though. My friend Chloe always takes out her books and reads quietly at her desk until it's time to go home. And Brian just sits there drawing pictures with his colored pencils. I don't know how they can be so calm when there's so much fun happening all around them!Of course, while all this playing is going on, our teacher Mrs. Johnson is still in the classroom trying to get us to settle down. "Okay children, please take your seats and be quiet now!" she'll say over and over. But nobody ever listens to her. We're having way too much fun!Sometimes if we get too rowdy, Mrs. Johnson will get really mad and start yelling. "That's enough! I've asked you all to calm down but you won't listen! If you don't settle down right now, I'm calling all your parents!" She'll threaten. I think AI could be really cool and help us with lots of stuff, but I can also see how it could be scary if the robots get too smart and take over!Anyway, here are some of the errors I noticed in Jessica's essay:In her introduction paragraph, she wrote "Artificial intelligence has become more prominent and ubiquitous in our modern society." Uhh, no it hasn't Jessie! Sure, maybe some smart robot vacuum cleaners, but AI definitely isn't ubiquitous yet. I don't see robots everywhere I go. I think she meant to say AI is becoming more prominent, not that it already is ubiquitous. Words mean things!Then she said "While AI undoubtedly offers significant benefits, we must be circumspect about its widespreadadoption." What does circumspect mean? I looked it up and it means being cautious and watching out for potential risks. Using fancy words doesn't make you sound smarter if nobody knows what they mean! Just say "we need to be careful about adopting AI everywhere."Her next paragraph was all about how AI could make our lives more efficient and convenient by automating tasks. She gave an example about AI assistants that can schedule appointments, answer questions, and manage your calendar. That's all true, but she failed to mention the potential downsides, like AI assistants losing your private data or scheduling the wrong things if they make mistakes. An essay should look at multiple perspectives.Later on, she talked about AI being used in medicine to diagnose diseases and recommend treatments. She wrote "An AI system's analysis is completely unbigotted and infaliable." Two mistakes there! First, she meant to say unbiased, not unbigotted. Bigotted means being opinionated against certain groups. Second, infaliable isn't even a real word! I think she meant infallible, which means incapable of making mistakes. Though even that isn't true - AI can definitely make mistakes since it's programmed by fallible humans.In her conclusion paragraph, she stated "As AI becomes more omnipresent in the comeing years, we must proactively shape guidelines and policies to protect sociatal wellbeing." Yikes, those are some bad spelling and grammar errors for a 12th grader! It should be "coming" not "comeing", "societal" not "sociatal", and omnipresent is another one of those fancy words that doesn't really make sense in this context since AI won't actually be everywhere in a few years.Overall, while I give Jessica's essay points for addressing some of the potential benefits and risks of AI, she made several errors in word choice, spelling, grammar, factual accuracy, and presenting a one-sided perspective. An essay on AI should more thoroughly explore both the advantages and disadvantages through concrete examples.Those are my thoughts! For a 4th grader, I think I did a pretty good job analyzing and critiquing Jessica's essay. I would probably get a better score than her on the exam based on my excellent English skills.
