AEfforts to preserve the Amazon rainforest are growing ever more urgent as the ecosystem's destruction accelerates. A recent study shows that a new program combining on-the-ground monitoring with satellite data and smartphone technology could help put the brakes on Amazon deforestation (毁林) — and potentially that of forests elsewhere. The scientists cooperated with 76 local communities, 36 of which participated in using satellitebased “early deforestation alerts”,an early-alert system on a smartphone app, to watch over the forest and to inspect forests and document damage. Over the next two years the participants were paid to work as forest monitors and received monthly alerts via the app when satellite data indicated local forest losses. Monitors investigated alerts and inspected for deforestation in the areas. They reported confirmed losses back to their communities, which decided whether to deal with the affairs on their own or inform state authorities. The researchers analyzed the same forest-loss satellite data from the given time period in all 76 communities. They found the program reduced forest loss by 8.4 hectares (公顷) in the first year — a 52 percent reduction compared with the average loss in the control communities, says Tara Slough, an economist at New York University. “This reduction in deforestation was concentrated in communities facing the largest threat of forest loss,” she adds. Results for the program were less striking in its second year, when forest loss was reduced by only 3.3 hectares compared with that in control communities. The researchers explain that a Peruvian government campaign against coca planting that year may have discouraged deforestation in both experimental and control communities, narrowing differences between the two groups in the program.Experts say this approach to dealing with Amazonian deforestation looks promising. Local groups may continue the work they started in the program. “We want to apply this in other communities. In doing so, we are making a contribution to the world,”wrote Francisco, a community member involved in the research.语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。

In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity。

Others say that competition is bad, that it sets one person against another, that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.I have taught many children who held the belief that their self。

worth relied(依赖)on how well they performed at tennis and other skills。

For them, playing we ll and winning are often lifeand.death affairs。

In their single。

minded pursuit(追求)of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten. However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude。

In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition。

Masses of floating ice are so large that they dwarf__your__ship,making you question whether your ship still can be spotted among such floating mountains. They are so improbable looking that you simply look in wonder. It seems that nothing that large could be natural—and then it strikes you that something so large could only be natural. Now,people realize that as climate change is raising global temperatures, more icebergs are being born.Antarctica creates far more of them than Greenland, the source of bergs in Arctic waters.Antarctica's are also much larger, sometimes reaching the size of small countries.Recent data show the averagestern Antarctic Peninsula since the 1940s,making the region, among the fastest warming on earth. This jump has been shown in the recent breaking of major ice shelves along the Antarctic Peninsula. As a result, thousands of new icebergs have broken off, from ice shelves into the Southern Ocean at an accelerated rate.Even as more icebergs are being created, scientists are learning that they are far from inactive masses of ice.In fact, they strikingly alter their environments biologically, chemically, and physically, making them islands of life in the open sea.Observers at sea have long remarked that they attract seals, and seabirds, and divers have noticed that fish are more numerous near them than in the surrounding sea.Now scientists are learning just what the attraction is all about.Depending on their size, location, and the season, icebergs can be nurturers (培养者) or destroyers.During their existence—typically years from breaking off from an Antarctic or Greenlandic glacier to their gradual melting as they float into lower altitudes, they support animals on,around, even inside their splendid ice castle. They fertilize the ocean with nutrients, increasing sea creature production.Grounded bergs can shelter areas of the seafloor, protecting bottom-living creatures from free-floating icebergs. However, large bergs can also trap sea ice, preventing its annual breakup and thus stopping phytoplankton (浮游植物) from getting life—giving sunlight, breaking the food chain at its first link.Icebergs will continue to astonish and attract visitors to the polar regions. But now these frozen large masses are taking on a new dimension of wonder as we uncover their vital role in the environment of polar seas.Nolonger can we look at icebergs as mere passive white mountains floating in the sea. They are active agents of change, each one is an icy oasis with awake of life as it floats on its unstoppable oceanic journey to melting.

As for old people, some of the applications are hard to use because they didn't grow up with them. They don't have simple models of how they should work, what to do when something doesn't work or where to go for help.We make it as easy as possible to be used for people who are not familiar with the technology.I think there is huge potential(潜力) and we are designing it.The ability to connect to friends, who remember the same movies and news and music,is really important, especially as people get old. They end up in retirement homes and they aren't always close to their friends.Allowing the network to help them connect with friends and family is a really powerful thing. My mother is an enthusiastic user of the Internet, although it took me years to get her to use e-mail.She was born with normal hearing, but lost it when she was 3.She was totally deaf for many years, until age 53,when she got ear aids. They work really well. That is a big change for her.But before then, her friends couldn't call her on the phone,so they insisted (坚持) she use e-mail to communicate with them. Young people don't even think of the Internet as technology. It's just there, and they use it.There's been a very interesting change in communications styles between old people and young people. There are some kids who are now in their teens and aren't willing to make phone calls. And they think of e-mail as old-fashioned and slow. The reason why teens don't make phone calls seems to be that they don' t know what to say. When they call they often stop for a while. They don't know what to say,and there's this silence. On the other hand, texting is considered proper, and it's okay if you don't answer. You might have been distracted (心烦意乱的).It's not considered rude. But it is considered strange if you're in this kind of voice conversation and simply stop talking.【语篇解读】文章主要讲的是网络和运用程序对老年人生活的影响,网络方便了他们,但同时也为他们带来了难题。

][科普知识型阅读理解(一)]-----(一)The forces that make Japan one of the world's most earthquakeprone(有地震倾向的) countries could become part of its longterm energy solution.Water from deep below the ground at Japan's tens of thousands of hot springs could be used to produce electricity.Although Japanese hightech companies are leaders in geothermal(地热的) technology and export it, its use is limited in the nation.“Japan should no doubt make use of its resources of geothermal energy,”said Yoshiyasu Takefuji, a leading researcher of thermalelectric power production. The disastrous earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011 caused a reaction against atomic power, which previously made up 30 percent of Japan's energy needs, and increased interest in alternative energies, which account for only 8 percent.Artist Yoko Ono has called on Japan to explore its natural energy, following the example of Iceland which uses renewable energy for more than 80 percent of its needs. For now, geothermal energy makes up less than 1 percent of the energy needs in Japan, which has for decades relied heavily on fossil fuels and atomic power. The biggest problem to geothermal energy is the high initial cost of the exploration and constructing the factories.Another problem is that Japan's potentially best sites are already being developed for tourism or are located within national parks where construction is forbidden.“We can't even dig 10cm inside national parks,”said Shigeto Yamada of Fuji Electric, adding that regulations protecting nature would need to be relaxed for geothermal energy to grow.Researcher Hideaki Matsui said, “Producing electricity by using hot springs is a decadeslong project. We also have to think about what to do for now as energy supplies will decline in the short term.”The Earth Policy Institute in Washington, the US, believed Japan could produce 80,000 megawatts(兆瓦)and meet more than half its electricity needs with geothermal technology.Japanese giants such as Toshiba are already global leaders in geothermal technology, with a 70 percent market share. In 2010, Fuji Electric built the world's largest geothermal factory in New Zealand.1.What would be the best title for the text?A.Alternative energies in JapanB.The world's largest geothermal plantC.Japan takes the lead in geothermal technologyD.Japan thinks of geothermal energy2.What percentage of Japan's energy needs is geothermal energy?A.About 8%. B.Below 1%.C.Around 30%. D.Over 80%.3.According to Shigeto Yamada, the growth of geothermal power in Japan needs ________.A.a change of rulesB.financial supportC.local people's helpD.high technology4.Geothermal energy is considered as a longterm program by ________.A.Yoshiyasu Takefuji B.Hideaki MatsuiC.Shigeto Yamada D.Yoko Ono5.It can be learned from the last two paragraphs that ________.A.the world's biggest geothermal plant was built by AmericaB.Japan will not export its geothermal technologyC.the potential of Japan's geothermal energy is greatD.it is hard to find geothermal energy in Japan(一)【要点综述】文章主要讲述了日本正在考虑开发地热能。
