Mr. Wang also had us do loads of grammar exercises on things like verb tenses, conditionals, and relative clauses. That stuff is still pretty confusing for me, but I tried my best.In addition to the work we did in class, I also studied a lot at home with my mom. She's really strict about my studies, so she made me take practice tests every night after dinner. If I missed any questions, she would make me re-do the whole section until I got it right. It was annoying at the time, but it really helped solidify everything. My dad also helped me practice my English listening skills since the exam had a listening comprehension section. He downloaded all these crazy English music videos and podcasts and made me summarize them. Again, it was tough but it paid off.Okay, so after weeks of hardcore studying, it was finally time for the big test day. I was honestly pretty anxious the night before and didn't sleep well at all. I kept having these dreams where I mixed up "there", "they're", and "their" and failed the whole exam. But I tried my best to stay positive and pumped myself up by watching inspirational movie clips with underdog characters. In the morning, I loaded up on a big breakfast of congee, dumplings, and dragon fruit to keep my energy and brain power up.When I got to the exam site at Jinshan No. 2 Middle School, it was just a madhouse. There were hundreds of nervous kids and parents everywhere. I saw a few kids throwing up from stresswhich did not help calm my nerves at all! After getting signed in and seated, the proctors gave out the test booklets. Just seeing the thickness of it made my palms sweat. The English exam had four sections: listening comprehension, reading comprehension, grammar/usage, and writing.The listening section played these recordings of people talking about different topics like climate change, internet privacy, and the history of jazz music. I had to answer multiple choice questions showing I understood the main ideas and details. The recordings did have some weird accents and idioms which tripped me up. But overall, I felt pretty good about this section thanks to all the listening practice.Next up was the reading comprehension with these super long passages on subjects like bacterial life cycles, the legalization of self-driving cars, and the cultural impact of electronic music festivals. As I was reading them, I remember thinking "who writes this stuff?!" But I focused hard on underlining key details, making notations, and identifying things like the author's purpose and tone. There were some ridiculously hard vocabulary words that I'd never seen before, but I did my best to use context clues.After reading, we moved to the grammar/usage section which was basically just hundreds of drills on topics like perfect verb tenses, noun clauses, conditional sentences and the subjunctive mood. This was definitely the section I struggled with the most since English grammar has so many crazy exceptions and rules. But I slowed down, didn't psyche myself out, and bubbled in my best guesses.Finally, we got to the writing section where we had to write a persuasive essay on whether elementary schools should have longer school days or years. I can't stand essays normally, butI've gotten better thanks to learning structures for introductions, thesis statements, topic sentences and conclusions. I decided to argue for shorter school years since kids need more free time for other activities. I may have rambled a bit, but I felt pretty good about my examples and reasoning.After what felt like an eternity of testing, the proctors finally called time and collected the booklets. I couldn't wait to get out of there! Some kids were clutching their stomachs after holding in their bathroom needs for so long. Others looked like they'd been through a boxingmatch with their messed up hair and shaken expressions. Then we have four class periods before lunch - Chinese, math, English, and science. Chinese is probably my best subject since it's my native language. Those tests are always so hard and there's so much pressure to do well.
