School had just let out and I couldn't wait for all the fun I was going to have. My parents promised we would go on a big trip, just our family. I was so excited!The first couple weeks, I just hung out around the house and neighborhood. I rode my bike, played video games, and Mom took us to the pool almost every day. It was nice to have zerohomework and not have to wake up early. I could sleep in as late as I wanted!Then the big day finally arrived - we were going on our family vacation! Dad loaded up the car with all our suitcases and we hit the road bright and early. The drive took forever, or at least it felt like it. My little brother and I fought over the iPad and games in the backseat for a while until Mom told us to stop. We took turns watching movies and looking out the window.After what seemed like days of driving, we finally arrived at the beach! We were staying in a big beach house right on the ocean. It had its own pool and everything. As soon as we got there, I raced down to the beach to dip my toes in the water. The sand was hot but the water was perfect.Over the next week, we spent every day on the beach. We swam, built sandcastles, and looked for seashells. I even tried surfing for the first time! It was really hard but so much fun. I can't wait to try it again. We had picnics on the beach and Mom made us delicious dinners every night back at the house.One day, we went on a boat tour to look for dolphins and whales. We saw a whole pod of bottlenose dolphins swimming and jumping right near our boat! They were so cute and playful.We didn't spot any whales that day, but just seeing the dolphins made the whole trip worth it.Another day, we went deep sea fishing with a local charter company. I was nervous about being out on the ocean like that, but Dad said it would be an adventure. We had the funniest captain named Captain Mike. He helped all of us bait our hooks and cast our lines. I didn't catch any fish, but Dad reeled in a huge red snapper! We had it for dinner that night, freshly cooked. It was delicious.One of my favorite parts of the trip was going to the aquarium near our beach house. They had tanks with all kinds of sharks, rays, and tropical fish. We even got to gobehind-the-scenes and meet a few of the animal trainers. I held a starfish and little shark in my hands! We spent hours just wandering around looking at all the marine life.Before we knew it, our vacation was coming to an end. I was so sad to leave the beach behind. We spent our last day relaxing on the beach and swimming in the ocean one final time. That night, we had a bonfire right in our backyard. We roasted marshmallows, told stories, and watched the sun set over the water. It was the perfect ending to the perfect trip.The drive home felt twice as long since none of us wanted to leave. We had made so many incredible memories as a family. But we took tons of pictures and videos to remember it forever. As soon as we got home, I put together a photo album of all the highlights. The water felt amazing on such a hot summer day. We also went fishing off a little dock and I actually caught two tiny fish! After releasing them back into the lake, we celebrated with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for dinner.On our last night camping, we walked along a trail to an open grassy area where we could see a meteor shower happening overhead. Sprawled out on our backs, we counted hundreds of shooting stars zipping across the dark sky. It was an incredible sight I'll never forget. I made so many wishes on those shooting stars!The trip seemed to fly by way too fast, and before I knew it, we were packing up to head home. I was sad for our outdoor adventure to end, but so grateful for all the amazing memories we made as a family. It was the long holiday before I started secondary school, so I had loads of time to do fun things.The first big adventure was going to camp for two weeks with my best friends Amy and Jake. It was a camp just for kids, with all sorts of cool activities like canoeing, archery, zip lining and more. I was a bit nervous at first because I'd never been away from my parents that long before. But the counselors were really nice and made sure we were having a good time.The first few days were a blast. Amy, Jake and I were in the same cabin group which was awesome. We had a big cabin with about 10 other kids our age. In the mornings we'd do activities like nature walks or swimming in the lake. The water was freezing at first but after a while it felt refreshing on a hot day.In the afternoons we had a choice of activities. My favorite was easily the archery range. I wasn't very good at first but the instructor was patient and helped me with my stance and aim. By the end of the two weeks, I could hit the target pretty consistently! Jake liked canoeing while Amy's thing was arts and crafts. We'd spend time in the evenings making lanyards,friendship bracelets and other little projects to give to our parents when we got home.The best part was the camp fire at night though. All the cabin groups would gather around the huge fire pit and we'd roast marshmallows, sing silly songs and listen to ghost stories told by the counselors. A few times there were performance nights where each cabin put on a skit or talent show. Our group did a hilarious remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves!I'll never forget the night we all went on a night hike through the woods. We had our flashlights and the counselors leading the way, but it was still pretty spooky! The trees looked bigger and darker, and we kept imagining animals lurking behind every bush. At one point we were absolutely certain we saw a pair of eyes shining in the darkness...but it turned out to be just a harmless little raccoon. We all screamed anyway before realizing what it was!Another super fun day was when we went on a trip to a nearby adventure park. It had a huge playground with lots of climbing stuff, tubes to crawl through, swings and slides. Amy, Jake and I must have gone down the giant spiral slide about 50 times! We also got to try out go-karting which was a first for me.I was a little nervous driving alone but it ended up being a totalblast. I loved feeling the wind in my hair as I went around the track.Eventually though, the two weeks had to come to an end. I remember sitting around the last campfire, giving lots of hugs to the new friends I had made. A bunch of us were crying because we didn't want to leave! My parents picked me up the next morning and I excitedly told them about all my adventures over the ride home. I also gave them the little craft projects I had made for them.The rest of the summer was a little quieter after the fun of camp. I spent a lot of time hanging out with Amy and Jake, having sleepovers and water balloon fights in the backyard. My parents took us to the beach for a week too which was nice. We swam in the ocean, built sandcastles and went for long walks on the boardwalk getting ice cream.Before I knew it, it was time to start at my new secondary school. I was nervous but also excited to start a new chapter. Amy and Jake were going to the same school too which helped ease my worries. No more teachers, no more books, no more homework for a while. Just playing and fun!The first week of vacation, my family went on a camping trip to the mountains. We packed up our tent, sleeping bags, camp stove, and lots of food into the car. The drive took forever but it was worth it when we arrived at the campground. Tall trees surrounded us and a beautiful lake glistened nearby.Dad set up the tent while Mom started the campfire. I helped gather sticks and kindling. Once the tent was ready, we spent the afternoon swimming and skipping rocks in the lake. The water was freezing cold but so refreshing on the hot summer day. When it got dark, we made s'mores over the fire and gazed at all the bright stars in the night sky. I had never seen so many stars before!The next day, we went on a long hike through the woods. That night, we put on our pajamas, made a fort out of blankets and pillows, and watched movies while eating pizza and candy until we couldn't stay awake any longer.For the 4th of July, my whole extended family gathered at my aunt and uncle's house. The little kids (including me!) decorated bikes and wagons for the neighborhood parade. Iused red, white and blue streamers plus Fourth of July stickers to make my bike look super patriotic. After the parade, we had a huge cookout with hamburgers, hot dogs, corn on the cob, and watermelon. My cousin and I had a watermelon seed spitting contest to see who could make theirs go the farthest.When it got dark, we watched fireworks light up the night sky in beautiful colors. I was a little scared by the booming sounds at first, but then I got used to it. We oohed and aahed as each firework burst into showers of sparkling reds, whites, blues, and greens. At the end, I was scooping up spent sparklers to draw designs in the air with their glowing trails. I didn't want the night to ever end!In August, Mom took my brother and I to the local county fair. We rode rollercoasters that turned us upside down and made my stomach do flip-flops. The Tilt-a-Whirl spin ride made me so dizzy I thought I would be sick! But my favorite was bumper cars, where we got to drive around crashing into each other. We ate way too many fried foods like funnel cakes, corn dogs, and loaded french fries. I went home feeling queasy but it was worth it for all the deep fried deliciousness.As August came to an end, summer nights began getting cooler and the back-to-school advertisements started. All toosoon, it was time forfew last summer adventures before a new school year started up again. On the final,we went to the movies to see a new animated movie. Sitting in the cool, dark theater with a huge tub ofpopcorn while the movie played felt like the perfect way to end my summer of fun.Looking back, last summer was packed full of excitement, adventures, and wonderful memories. I did so many amazing things and spent quality time with family and friends. Those 3 months of freedom flew by way too fast! Just fun, fun, fun!The first few weeks, I just lazed around the house playing video games and watching TV shows and movies. My mom wasn't too happy about that and said I needed to "get some fresh air and exercise." She signed me up for the town's summer day camp program.At first, I wasn't thrilled about going to camp. I pictured being stuck inside a stuffy building doing boring arts and crafts all day. But Camp Wildwood turned out to be awesome! We went on hiking trails, played outdoor games, went swimming at the lake, and had cookouts. The counselors were really cool older kids who made everything feel like an adventure.One of the biggest adventures was our three-day camping trip halfway through the summer. We all packed our gear into the camp buses and drove about an hour to White Pine Forest. The counselors taught us how to pitch our tents, build campfires, and cook stuff like foil packet meals and s'mores over the fire. We learned wilderness skills like how to use a compass and identify different plants and animal tracks.At night, we told ghost stories and did skits around the campfire. I'll never forget this one story about the Wildwood Beast, a scary creature that's half-bear, half-snake that's rumored to live deep in the forest. The storyteller made spooky sound effects and used a flashlight under his face. I got totally creeped out but in an awesome way!On the last night, we had an "iron camper" competition. We split into teams and had to complete a bunch of camping challenges like fire-building, knot-tying, setting up a tentblindfolded, and cooking a meal over the campfire. My team won and we got little champion trophies made of sticks and pine cones. Coolest prize ever!When we got back from camping, there was only a couple weeks left before school started again. We went on a few more shorter hikes and had fun free-choice days where you could do different activities like sports, arts and crafts, or just hang out with friends. I got to practice my archery skills and made this awesome leather wrist cuff in leatherworking.On the last day of camp, we had a big outdoor party for all the campers and families. They gave out awards and performed silly skits spoofing the counselors. I won an award for "Most Improved Hiker" since I used to complain about hiking at the start of summer. There was a cookout with hamburgers, hot dogs, and my favorite camp treat - ooey gooey s'mores! I'll miss camp but at least I have tons of great memories until next year.So that was my summer - weeks of lazy freedom mixed with exciting camp adventures in the great outdoors. I tried so many new things like camping, hiking, archery, and survival skills. I made new friends and came out of my shell a lot more than I expected to. Can't wait to see what next summer has in store!。
