1 4 Module 4 A Social Survey—My Neighbourhood
Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2020·合肥调研)Life on the street is a constant struggle for homeless people. In times of extreme weather conditions, that struggle becomes even more difficult. Recently, homeless people across Chicago faced freezing to death if they couldn’t find shelter for the night.Thankfully, one local woman refused to let that happen. On January 30, 2018, 34yearold Candice Payne, a local managing broker, was lucky enough to have shelter from the dangerous conditions.“It was -20 ℃,and I knew they were going to be sleeping on ice and I had to do something,”said Payne. Payne started brainstorming different ways she could possibly help. Finally, she decided to see if there were any rooms available at local inns and hotels that she could get to help those stuck on the street. For Payne, her mission was personal. According to Payne, her husband, Carlos Callahan, had lived on the street at one point in his life. Based on his experiences, Payne knew that the homeless people still out on the street desperately needed help and that if she didn’t step up to help, no one likely would. However, when Payne explained what she was trying to do, many of the local hotels refused to allow her to pay for the rooms as they didn’t want homeless people to stay in their rooms. “No one wanted them, but one hotel, the Amber Inn, was nice enough to allow me to buy the rooms,”said Payne.Payne’s selfless act made news across the country. However, she insisted she had never done it for attention. “I am a regular person,”said Payne, who spent thousands of dollars of her own money to help complete strangers. “It all sounded like a rich person did this, but I’m just a little black girl from the South Side.”【解题导语】本文主要讲述了一位普通的芝加哥女士受到她丈夫经历的触动,为防止无家可归者在大街上被冻死,决定为他们订旅馆的房间。
1.What does the underlined word “that”in Paragraph 2 refer to?A.Locals living on the street.B.The homeless freezing to death.C.The extreme weather.D.The shelter for the homeless.B
根据第一段最后一句“Recently, homeless people across Chicago faced freezing to death if they couldn’t find shelter for the night.”
据此可推知,画线词that指代“The homeless freezing to death”。
2.How did Candice Payne help the homeless people?A.By drawing public attention.B.By giving them money directly.C.By taking them to her own house.D.By buying hotel rooms for them.D
根据第三段最后一句“Finally, she decided to see if there were any rooms available at local inns and hotels that she could get to help those stuck on the street.”
3.What may contribute to Payne’s nice act?A.Her husband’s past experiences.B.The requests from the homeless.C.Her desire to become famous.D.The coldness of local hotels.A解析:细节理解题。
根据第四段第二、三句“According to Payne, her husband, Carlos Callahan, had lived on the street at one point in his life. Based on his experiences, Payne knew that the homeless people still out on the street desperately needed help and that if she didn’t step up to help, no one likely would.”
4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A.A Black Fighter Changes the WorldB.A Woman’s Curiosity Brings a RewardC.A Regular Woman Makes a DifferenceD.A Couple’s Brave Act Moves the CountryC解析:标题归纳题。
根据第二段第一句“Thankfully, one local woman refused to let that happen.”
B(2020·大连一模)It is generally acknowledged that young people from poorer socioeconomic backgrounds tend to do less well in the education system. In an attempt to help the children of poor families, a nationwide program called“HeadStart”was started in the US in 1965. A lot of money was poured into it. It took children into preschool institutions at the age of three and was supposed to help them succeed in school. But the results have been disappointing, because the program began too late. Many children who entered it at three were already behind their peers in language and intelligence and the parents were not involved in the process. At the end of each day, “Head Start”children returned to the same disadvantaged home environment. To improve the results, another program was started in Missouri that concentrated on parents as the child’s first teachers. This program was based on research showing that working with the family is the most effective way of helping children get the best possible start in life. The four-year study included 380 families who were about to have their first child and represented different socioeconomic statuses, ages and family structures. The program involved trained educators visiting and working with the parent or parents and the child. The program also gave the parents some guidance, and useful skills on child development. At three, the children involved in the “Missouri” program were evaluated with the children selected from the same socioeconomic backgrounds and family situations. The results were obvious. The children in the program were more advanced in language development, problem solving and other intellectual skills than their peers. They performed equally well regardless of socioeconomic backgrounds or family structures. The one factor that was found to affect the child’s development was the poor quality of parent-child interaction. That interaction was not necessarily bad in poorer families. The “Missouri”program compares quite distinctly with the “Head Start”program. Without a similar focus on parent education and on the vital importance of the first three years, some evidence indicates that it will not be enough to overcome educational unfairness.【解题导语】本文主要通过对比两项侧重点不同的教育项目表明,要实现教育公平就应该关注对父母的教育,使其与孩子之间进行高品质互动,并且意识到孩子出生后前三年的重要性。

4 Module1 Life in the Future
Module 1 Life in the FutureⅠ. AImagine you enter a car with no steering wheel or no brake. Under a voice-activated command, you say an address. “The fastest route will take us 15.3 minutes. Should I take it? ” You say “yes” and you are on y our way. The car responds (做出回应)and starts moving all by itself. All you have to do is to sit back and relax. How strange would it be if, one day in the future, everyone had such a car? No crazy driving, no quarrels, no cutting in; traffic laws would be respected and driving much safer. On the other hand, imagine the cost savings for local police enforcement (强制执行) and town budgets(预算) without all those speeding and parking tickets.A new technology has the possibility to change modern society thoroughly. There’s no question that self-driving vehicles could be good. The accident statistics would drop: about 94% of road accidents in the U. S. are caused by man. Older drivers and people with disabilities would travel a lot. Keeping safe speeds and being electric, self-driving cars would sharply reduce pollution levels and depend on alternative energy. Roads would be quieter, people safer. But we must also consider the effect of the new technology on those who now depend on driving for their living. The American Trucking Association lists about 3. 5 million professional truck drivers in the US. The companies developing self-driving vehicles should be partnering with state and federal authorities to offer retraining for this large workforce (劳动力).New technologies will, and should, be developed. This is how society moves forward. However, progress can’t be one-sided. It is necessary for the companies and state agencies involved to consider the results of these possible changes to build a better future for all.【文章大意】作者陈述了将来出现无人驾驶的汽车之后的利弊。
