The End
The Dunciad (1728) 《
The Dunciad, generally considered Pope’s best satiric work, took him over ten years for final completion. It is a powerful satire in poem on Pope’s rival writers which ridicules the dull works of the dull poets of his day and it also begins his career as major verse satirist. “While pensive poets painful vigils(不眠) keep, Sleepless themselves to give their readers sleep." But the poem is not confined to personal attack. Dullness as reflected in the corruptness of government, social morals, education and even religion, is expertly exposed and satirized.
Born: 21th May 1688 London Died: 30th May 1744 (aged 56) Twickenham (today an incorporated areaof London) Signature:
Writer’s Background
He was born into a well-to-do merchant family of Roman Catholic faith in London. Because of his constant sickness and the family religion, he was not able to go to university or hold any public office like many of his contemporaries. In 1711, Pope and his friends formed a club--Sriblerus Club which was to cooperate in a scheme to satirize all sorts of false learning and pedantry(迂腐).

Pope

rationality, clarity, restraint, order and decorum.
II. Neoclassicism.
• 2. In Milton's age there was a tendency toward the clear simple, measured(整齐的, 有分寸的) and exact expression in poetry (reaction against pompous/twisted styles). The major exponents of the movement were John Dryden (1613-1700) and Alexander Pope .
III. Features of Alexander Pope’s poetry
• As the most representative poet of Neoclassicism of English literature, Alexander Pope (1688-1744) advocated the classical rules of order, reason, logic, restrained emotion, good taste and decorum. He developed a satiric, concise, smooth, graceful and well-balanced style and brought the heroic couplet to its last perfection.
IV. An Essay on Criticism
• It assembles the “most known and most received observations on the subject of literature and criticism”.( similar to Horace in his Ars Poetica) • He intended to give to generally accepted doctrines pleasing and memorable expression (a storehouse of critical maxims rather than a poem)

Alexander Pope was born in London as the son of Alexander Pope, a Roman Catholic linen-merchant, and Edith (Turner) Pope, who was forty-four when Alexander, her only child, was born. Edith Pope belonged to a large Yorkshire family, which divided along Catholic and Protestant lines. His early years Pope spent at Binfield on the edge of Windsor Forest, and recalled this period as a golden age: "Thy forests, Windsor, and thy green retreats, / At once the monarch's and the Muse's seats, / Invite my lays. Be present, sylvan maids! Unlock your springs, and open all your shades." Anecdotes from Pope's life were deemed worthy of collecting during his lifetime. Joseph Spence, a critic, minor poet, and Pope's biographer, tells that Pope was "a child of a particularly sweet temper and had a great deal of sweetness in his look when he was a boy".

Elder
There are two classes of elders
the teaching elders, called ministers, and the ruling elders, who are
lay persons chosen generally by the congregation and ordained to assist the minister in the oversight and government of the church. Most Protestant churches employ the term “elder” with various meanings. Among Methodists it refers to a fully ordained minister. In its rare use in the Lutheran tradition, it is interchangeable with deacon in reference to lay persons chosen by a congregation to assist the pastor with official duties;

• The poem consists of four epistles that are addressed to Lord Bolingbroke. It is an attempt to “vindicate the ways of God to Man" . It challenges as prideful an anthropocentric world-view. The poem is not solely Christian; however, it makes an assumption that man has fallen and must seek his own salvation.
Pope as a translator:
Translation of the Iliad(1715–20) the Odyssey (172526)
His translation of the Iliad was acclaimed by Samuel Johnson as “ a performance which no age or nation could hope to equal.”
Pope as an editor:
Editing and publishing Shakespeare’s plays in 1725
Some quotations from Pope:
• A little learning is a dangerous thing. (from An Essay on Criticism) • 只有少量知识是危险的。 • To err is human, to forgive, divine. • An honest man is the noblest work of God. • For fools rush in where angels fear to tread. • Fools admire, but men of sense approve.
