• (4)商务英语措辞礼貌,讲究客套。措词婉转、诚恳、却又不卑不亢,忌盛气凌人, 强人所难。礼貌是缓和紧张气氛,赢得善意尊重的有效手段。所以,尽管竞争激烈, 但表现商务交际上总是彬彬有礼。商务英语中的这种措词婉转手法貌似平常,效果却 很大,婉转的语言比强硬的措词更有力量,这也反映出国际商务交往中既严格又灵活 的语言运用规律。
• 实用性 商务英语属于实用性英语,随着应用的发展,其内涵已包容了与商务有关的 所有领域,不再局限于“外贸函电”和“外贸英语”的狭窄范围,发展成为了包括国 际贸易、金融、营销、管理、电子商务和跨文化交流等在内的完整的商务英语体系。 商务英语是中国职员在外企里工作时使用的最基本的、也是最为重要的工具。受过商 务英语特殊培训的学员,因对企业的商务背景理解更为深入,交流更为有效自由,从 而在外企中更能得到认可。
• 2.语态、时态特征
普通英语中被动语态随处可见,多用于描述的语句。商务英语则不同,句子的动作主 体通常比较明确,均慎用被动语态。这是因为国际商务活动中责任与义务必不可少, 动作主体不清,则责任不明,难以让对方信赖。商务英语中多用现在时态,少用将来 时态。
商务英语的文体特征
• 专业性 商务英语的词汇具有明显的专业特征。商务英语语境决定或制约着部分词汇具 有特殊的商务语义。译者应充分认识到商务词汇对语境的依赖性,不要将其混同于一 般词汇。普通英语中balance和quote的含义分别为“平衡”和“引用”,但在商务语 境中,它们却有着特殊的含义。例如:We strongly demand immediate full or partial payment with a statement of when you will pay the balance.(我们强 烈要求你们马上全部付款或者部分付款,但要说明何时将余款付清。);Their prices are always quoted in dollars.(他们的价格总是以美元报价。)

• 简洁性 简洁性是商务英语的另一个文体特征,从其格式用语的使用即可见一斑,其 格式有“if+形容词(或过去分词)”或“as+过去分词”,如:if available,if possible或as agreed,as required等。例如:I am sending a catalogue as required.(我将目录按要求寄出。);The new car will be launched with a nationwide sales campaign if practicable.(如果可行的话,新型汽车将以开展全 国范围的销售活动投放市场。)这种格式用语由于其简洁的形式和其内隐的语言结构 张力,使用起来比较灵活,例如,as agreed可以扩展为as it is(was,has been, had been)agreed,因此,可以用于不同时态的语言上下文中。
• (2)商务英语是商务活动的工具,通过阅读文献可以发现:商务英语常用简洁、易懂、 规范、正式的词,甚至法律语言,淡于修饰。这一特点是由国际商务交际的性质决定 的,因为国际商务交际非常讲究效益、效率,使用常用的词语便于交易双方的理解和 接受; 修饰语少,内容上直截了当。偏僻的词汇可能会增加双方沟通障碍,因而不受 欢迎。商务英语的词汇选择讲究精炼、严谨,很少使用口语化的、非正式的、生僻、 不规范的词或行话。

Chapter Four 商务英语的文体
商务英语语言文体特点
• 1.词汇特色
• (1)商务英语属于专门用途英语,多用专业词汇。其语言上最显著的特点是:它是商 务实践、商务理论知识的载体,用词有明显的专业性。如商务函电、经贸英语、商务 合同、经贸英语翻译等。这些都毫不例外地涉及到经贸商务知识和专业词汇。
• (3)商务英语用词注意轻重,承诺留有余地,然而,数字与时间概念却比普通英语的 表达精确得多。因为,商务活动中承诺方式的不同意味着不同的责任和义务,承诺时 用词过于绝对或过分肯定,则缺少灵活性,而轻描淡写的承诺又给人以无诚意或不负 责任之感,因此,承诺程度的把握甚为关键。商务英语文件,尤其是合同中的时间和 数字概念表达须尽量准确,不能有丝毫差错,忌用模糊词。慎用夸张,比喻等修辞手 法,以免产生不必要的误解,因为商务文件通常是确定有关当事人权利和义务的依据。
