当代大学英语Active English(综合英语)(Comprehensive English)Band 1Unit 1 Learning about learningTask 1:1. WillyHow are you enjoying college?Great! I’m meeting a lot of people from different parts of the country, and there are some students from overseas as well.Did you have any problems adjusting to college? Not really. I left home about two years ago, and worked in London. Later I travelled round Europe for a while. So living away from home is no problem. The main problem is the workload – especially the reading and assignments we have to do.What are you main study problems? There’s really a lot of reading to do –I don’t see how anyone can cope with it! The teachers give us long reading lists, and it takes me a week or more just to read one book! When do you study? No set time, really: I do it when I get the chance. Sometimes I spend a whole day just studying, but I find it hard to concentrate on the work.Do you find the classes helpful?Yes, but again, I find it hard to concentrate. A lot of students make notes, but I prefer to concentrate on what the teachers are saying, and try to listen carefully.Words and ExpressionsOverseas: n. abroad 外国Adjust (to): v. to change slightly Assignment: n. a duty or piece of work that is given to a particular person Workload: n. the amount of work one has to do. A load is something that has to be carried. Cope (with): v. to manage 处理,应付Set: adj. exact, arranged 精确地,安排的Concentrate (on): v. to direct one’s thoughts, efforts, and attention towards a certain activity or purpose 集中(思想、精力、注意力等)What about the assignments? They are really tough, too! Thinking about them in advance is worst. I spend hoursthinking before I start writing. I find putting my thoughts down on paper really hard. How many drafts do you write? One of course! One is more than enough! What about foreign languages?Well, I did French at school, and I have travelled in France quite a bit, so I’m doing French.I quite enjoy it, but the course is mostly literature, you know, reading books and stuff, and I’m not really very good at reading books.Any tips?Yes. I find that reading very simple books in a foreign language helps a lot. You seem to learn the language without realizing it! But of course, you have to practice using the language, too. So I practice talking French with my friends.Words and ExpressionsTough: adj. difficult, demanding, strong In advance: beforehand, before something happens Mostly: adv. For the most part Draft: n. You write this roughly before doing a final copy. 草稿Literature: n. printed material e.g. poetry, a novel 文学作品Stuff: n. (slang) “things like that”(俚语)诸如此类的东西Tip: n. a word of advice, a helpful suggestion 2. SueNow let’s meet Sue, who is a freshman at college in the United States of America. We asked her these questions:Where is your home?My home is in a small town called Millbrook in New York State. That’s about 100 miles from my college. Is this the first time you have lived away from home?Yeah. I’ve stayed on weekends with friends, and I’ve been on summer camps too, but this is the first time I have lived away from my parents. I found it quite hard to adjust at first. I mean I enjoy it, sure, but it can be quite tough, too, in a way. I miss home when I think about it. But fortunately, I’m too busy to think about it very much! How are you enjoying college? It’s great! I’m meeting lots of new people, and really enjoying the courses in the program.Do you have any problems with studying?Yeah. There’re a lot of new subjects, and it’s real hard to find time for all the reading I have to do.Any tips for other students with the same problem?Yeah. I find the best thing to do is to be, you know, quite selective about what to read. I mean pick and choose! What do you mean exactly?Well, you know, I don’t try to read complete books – that would take an age! I just select the bits that are relevant to the topic we are studying, read those bits, and make notes. How do you know which bits to read?Well, I just select the bits to do with the classes and assignments. Sometimes it’s just a chapter or two, sometimes it may be only part of a chapter. I look up topics in the index at the back of the book. What about foreign languages?I didn’t learn to speak any foreign language at high school, and now I’m learning Spanish, and I find that real hard – especially listening and speaking. So what are your tips?Well, I have these tapes, and I play them on my Walkman in my room. I listen, and repeat, you know, and practice a lot outside class. You never get enough practice inside class! When do you study?I find I study best at regular times: I set aside regular times to study, and keep to that routine, like clockwork. Sometimes I find it hard to concentrate, so normally I divide the time up into half hour sessions. In each session I set myself an exact job to do. Every half hour or so I take a break. I find this makes it easier to concentrate.Do you find the classes helpful?Yes, but again, I find it hard to concentrate. I find the best way to concentrate is to make notes on what the teachers are saying. What about the assignments? They are real tough, too! I find getting my thoughts down on paper quite hard. I’ve found the best approach is to write a rough draft first. Sometimes I do more than one rough draft. I find getting ideas down on paper, even in rough form, helps me to think about them better. I tried out this approach in high school, and it really works!Words and ExpressionsWeekend: n. Selective: adj. choosy; able to make good choices Pick and choose: (idiom) to choose what you want Take an age: (idiom) to take a very long time (习语)费很长时间Select: v. to choose 挑选Relevant: adj. concerned with 有关的,有关主题的Topic: n. subject, the thing being studied or talked about 主题,话题Tape: n. object producing sound used in tape recorders 录音带Walkman: n. a kind of small tape-recorder 随身听Set aside: to arrange, to keep separate 留出,拔出Routine: n. normal or regular actions 惯例,常规Like clockwork: (idiom) regularly (like a clock) Session: n. a period of time 一段时间Approach: n. way of doing things

Unit 2 Learning with technologyThe Fun They Had (Part1)Margie dictated it that night to her telescreen diary. On the screen headed 17 May 2155 she wrote: “Today Tommy found a real book!”It was a very old book. Margie’s grandfather once said that when he was a little boy his grandfather told him that there was a time when all stories were printed on paper. They turned the pages, which were yellow with age, and it was awfully difficult to read words that stood still instead of moving, the way they were supposed to – on a screen, you know. And then, when they turned back to the page before, it had the same words on it that it had when they read it the first time.“Gee,”said Tommy, “what a waste. When you’re through with the book, you just throw it away, I guess. Our television screen must have had a million books on it and it’s good for plenty more. I wouldn’t throw it away.”“Same as mine,” said Margie. She was eleven and hadn’t seen as many telebooks as Tommy had. He was thirteen. She said, “Where did you find it?”“In my house.” He pointed up without looking, because he was busy reading. “In the attic.”“What’s it about?”“School.”Margie was scornful. “School? What’s there to write about school? I have school.”Margie always hated school, but now she hated it even more than ever. The mechanical teacher had been giving her test after test in geography and she had been doing worse and worse until her mother had shaken her head sorrowfully and sent for the County Inspector. He was a round little man with a red face and a whole box of tools with dials and wires. He smiled at Margie and gave her an apple, then took the teacher apart. Margie had hoped he wouldn’t know how to put it together again, but he knew how all right, and, after an hour or so, there it was again, large and ugly, with a big screen on which all the lessons were shown and the questions were asked.Words and Expressionsdictate: v. to say words for someone to write down 口授screen: n. what you look at on a television set or a computer 屏幕awfully: adv. very 十分stand still: the opposite of move 不动to be through (idiom) : “Tell me when you are through” means “Tell me when you have finished.”(American English) 完成guess: v. to suppose (American English) 猜测;以为attic: n. small space under the roof of a house 顶楼,阁楼scornful: adj. full of scorn. Scorn means lack of respect. 轻蔑的mechanical: adj. to do with machines 机械方面的geography: n. the study of the world – climate, population, crops, etc 地理county: n. an area in America or England 郡;县inspector: n. An inspector is a person who inspects: he or she checks that things are all right. 检查员dial: n. A dial is like a small clock: you look at it to make sure a machine is working properly. 刻度盘take apart: to take to pieces 拆开put together (again): to put the pieces back again 拼合That wasn’t so bad. The part Margie hated most was the slot where she had to put homework and test papers. She always had to write them out in punch code they made her learn when she was six years old, and the mechanical teacher calculated the mark in no time. The Inspector smiled after he was finished and patted Margie’s head. He said to her mother, “It’s not the little girl’s fault, Mrs. Jones, I think the geography sector was geared a little too quick. Those things happen sometimes. I’ve slowed it up to an average ten-year level. Actually the overall pattern of her progress is quite satisfactory.” And he patted Margie’s head again.Margie was disappointed. She had been hoping they would take the teacher away altogether. They had once taken Tommy’s teacher away for nearly a month because the history sector had blanked out completely. So she said to Tommy: “Why would anyone write about school?”Tommy looked at her with superior eyes. “Because it’s not our kind of school, stupid! This is the old kind of school that they had hundreds and hundreds of years ago.” He added loftily, pronouncing the word carefully. “Centuries ago.”Words and Expressionsslot: n. a hole in a machine (机器中的)狭长孔,狭缝punch code: a tape you punch holes in to give a machine information 穿孔码calculate: v. to work out 计算sector: n. area 部分gear: v. to supply with gears 以齿轮连起;开动average: adj. normal 平常的;普通的satisfactory: adj. all right 令人满意的disappointed: adj. sad 沮丧的blank(out): v. to become a complete blank 成为空白superior (to): adj. better 较好的stupid: adj. foolish 愚蠢的loftily: adv. in a superior or proud way 高傲地The Fun They Had (Part2)Margie was hurt. “Well, I don’t know what kind of school they had all that time ago.” She read the book over his shoulder for a while, then said, “Anyway, they had a teacher.”“Sure they had a teacher, but it wasn’t a regular teacher. It was a man.”“A man? How could a teacher be a man?”“Well, he just told boys and girls things and gave them homework and asked them questions.”“A man isn’t smart enough.”“Sure he is. My father know as much as my teacher.”“He can’t. A man can’t know as much as a teacher.”“He knows almost as much, I betcha.”Margie wasn’t prepared to dispute that. She said, “I wouldn’t want a strange man in my house to teach me.”Tommy screamed with laughter. “You don’t know much, Margie. The teachers didn’t live in the house. They had a special building and all the kids went there.”“And all the kids learn t the same thing?”“Sure,if they were the same age.”“But my mother says a teacher has to be adjusted to fit the mind of each boy and girl it teaches and that each kid has to be taught differently.”“Just the same they didn’t do it that way then. If you don’t like it, you don’t have to read the book.”“I didn’t say I didn’t like it,” Margie said quickly. She wanted to read about those funny schools. They weren’t half finished when Margie’s mother called, “Margiel School!” Margie looked up. “Not yet,Mamma.”“Now!” said Mrs.Jones. “And it’s probably time for Tommy, too.”Margie said to Tommy, “Can I read the book some more with you after school?”“Maybe,” he said. He walked away whistling, the dusty old book tucked beneath his arm.Margie went into the school room. It was right next to her bedroom, and the mechanical teacher was switched on and waiting for her. It was always on at the same time every day except Saturday and Sunday, because her mother said little girls learned better if they learned at regular hours. The screen was lit up, and it said “Today’s arithmetic lesson is on the addition of proper fractions. Please insert yesterday’s homework in the proper slot.”Margie did so with a sigh. She was thinking about the old schools they had when her grandfather’s grandfather was a little boy. All the kids from the whole neighborhood came, laughing and shouting in the school yard, sitting together in the school room, going another on the homework and talk about it. And the teachers were people……The mechanical teacher was flashing on the screen: “When we add the fraction 1/2 and 1/4…”Margie was thinking about how the kids must have loved it in the old days. She was thinking about the fun they had.Words and Expressionshurt: adj. Here, “hurt” means that her feelings were hurt – she was offended. I betcha: This is how a child pronounces the words “I bet you”.
