Recent studies have shown that the behavior If rats have adequate living space, they eat well, sleep well, ant reproduce well. However, if their living conditions become too crowded, their behavior patterns an even their health perceptibly change. They cannot sleep or eat well, and signs of fear and tension become obvious. The more crowded they are, the more they tend to bite each other and even killeach other. Thus for rats, population and violence are directly related. Is this a natural law for human society as well? Over the years people have made up new languages with this aim. At least six hundred languages have been developed in the search for a language which all human beings would be able to speak. The most famous one, Esperanto(世界语),was the idea of Ludwig Zamenhof . a doctor in Warsaw . He published a book about his new language in 1887.To encourage people to learn the Language, he made it as simple as possible.Esperanto has never been accepted as an official world language, but it has been suggested as an auxiliary. By 1950 it had been taught to one and a half million speakers, and it was spoken in six hundred schools. Today Esperanto is spoken by about eight million people, and more man one hundred newspapers and magazines in the language are published regularly throughout the world. Thousands of books have been written in Esperanto, including those translated from other languages.Today the need for a new auxiliary language like Esperanto seems less obvious. Throughout this century English has grown more and more important. It has become a second language for many millions of people. The fact that more are learning English shows that the use of English is still growing worldwide. No One would deny the usefulness of a word language, but not many people think that Esperanto is likely to play such a role.55. By comparison, an earthquake of similar intensity that shook America in 1988 claimed 25,000 victims.Injuries and deaths were relatively less in Los Angeles because the quake occurred at 4:31 a.m. on a holiday, when traffic was light on the city's highways. In addition, changes made to the construction codes in Los Angeles during the last 20 years have strengthened the city's buildings and highways, making them more resistant to quakes.Despite the good news, civil engineers aren't resting on their successes. Pinned to their drawing boards are blueprints for improved quake-resistant. The new designs should offer even greater security to cities where earthquakes often take place. In the past, making structures quake-resistant meant firm yet flexible materials, such as steel and wood, that bend \\rithOLlt breaking. Later, people tried to lift a building off its foundation, and insert rubber and steel between the building and its foundation to reduce the impact of ground vibrations. The most recent designs give buildings brains as well as concrete and steel supports.Called smart buildings, the structures respond like living organisms to an earthquake's vibrations. When the ground shakes and the building tips forward, the computer would force the building toshift in the opposite direction. The new smart structures could be very expensive to build. However, they would save many lives and would be less likely to be damaged during earthquakes.59. One reason why the loss of lives in the Los Angeles earthquake was comparatively low was that .A) new computers had been installed in the buildingsB) it occurred in the residential areas rather than on the highwaysC) large numbers of Los Angeles residents had gone for a holidayD) improvements had been made in the construction of buildings and highways60. The function of the computer mentioned in the passage is toA) counterbalance an earthquake's action on the buildingB) predict the coming of an earthquake with accuracyC) help strengthen the foundation of the buildingD) measure the impact of an earthquake's vibrations61. It can be inferred from the passage that in minimizing the damage caused by earthquakes attention should be focused on .A) the increasing use of rubber and steel in capital constructionB) the development of flexible building materialsC) the reduction of the impact of ground vibrationsD) early forecasts of earthquakes62. The main purpose of. this passage is mostly to .A) compare the consequences of the earthquakes that occurred in the U.S.B) encourage civil engineers to make extensive use of computersC) outline the history of the development of quake-resistant building materialsD) report new developments in constructing quake-resistant buildingsSection BDirections: Match the Chinese sentences in the left column with the English in the right column, mark the corresponding letter on the Answer with a single line through the centre.63.首先,他如此努力工作并非只是为了钱,他一心为了教育青年人并设法激励他们在各方面取得进步。

Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Passage oneMany teachers believe that the responsibility for learning lies with the students. If a long reading assignment is given, teachers expect students to be familiar with the information in the reading even if they do not discuss it in class or give an examination. The ideal student is considered to be one who is motivated to learn for the sake of learning, not the one interested only in getting high grades. When research is assigned, the professor in the United States expects the students to take the initiative and complete the assignment with less guidance. Professors will help students who need it, but prefer that their students not be over-dependent on them.In the united States, professors have other duties besides teaching. Often they are responsible foradministrative work within their departments. In addition, they may be obliged to publish articles and books. Therefore the time that a professor can spend with a student outside of class is limited. If a student has problems with classroom work, the student should either approach a professor during office hours or make appointment. Participation in the classroom is not only accepted but also expected of the students in many courses. Some professors base part of the final grade on the student's oral participation. Although there are formal lectures during which the student has a passive role (i.e. listening and taking notes), many courses are organized around classroom discussions, student questions and informal lectures. In the teaching of science and mathematics, the dominant mode of instruction is generally traditional with teachers presenting formal lectures and students taking note. However, new educational trends have psychology classes, for example, are often required to solve problems in groups, design projects, make presentations and examine case studies. Since some college or university courses are "applied" rather than "theoretical" they stress "doing" and involvement.51、 When research is assigned the professor ______.A. will give the student some necessary guidanceB. will not give student any guidanceC. prefer that student not be dependent on him at allD. expect the student to complete it under his guidance52、 Which of the following is NOT the duty of an American professor? ______A. Primarily this group consists of lawyers, artists, company presidents and employees of joint-venture companies. This group did not exist ten years ago. Business ventures such as real estate development, computer companies and travel agencies have nurtured this new class of ambitious Chinese who have tasted "the good life" and want even more of it.What are the marks of this group of people? First of all, it is defined by what its members have: cell phones, washing machines, microwave ovens, computers, homes and vacations. But this group is not only marked by material things. A psychological independence and carefree optimism is also present. Middel-aged successful company presidents, young professionals even college students are optimistic, expecting the best in their future.Chinese entrepreneurs(企业家)began accumulating money in the late 1980's. But it was not until the middle 90's that the material possession of the newly-rich——cell phones, computers, cars, houses were easily available. These high-tech entrepreneurs quit state enterprise to start private companies nearly a decade ago, when China started to transform from a planned to a market economy. These early entrepreneurs are now wealthy by any country's standards. However, like any newly-rich Chinese, they seem a little uncomfortable when asked about wealth. One reason for their discomfort is that they realize that the prosperity wealth that has created the group of newly-rich has not benefited all Chinese equally. Some entrepreneurs have move up in social status, but many workers have been laid off, losing their jobs temporarily for economic reason, from state-run factories. For most Chinese, the move into this style of Rife is still a step-by-step progress. It may be slow but many business people are hopeful. As a real estate entrepreneur from Beijing said: "This is not just about money. It's abouta better quality of life."55、The word "nurture" (Line 4, Prara1) probably means ______.A. naturalizeB. nourishC. care for and educateD. help the development of56、 According to the passage, which of the following are NOT marked of the newly-rich Chinese? ______A. Because they know many others are not so wealthy.58、According to the real estate entrepreneur, many business people are looking forward to this Style of Life for the sake of ______.A. more wealthB. higher social statusC. better quality of lifeD. greater famePassage ThreeIn recent years a new and serious problem has arisen for international airlines and their passengers. This is the relatively new crime of hijacking. Once an unheard-of event, it has now become a common occurrence. There is not very much anyone can do once a hijacker is on board an aeroplane. He may be carrying a gun or hand grenades, which, if used, would cause a disaster. The only thing to do is try to ensure that these people never get on the plane in the first instance. So airlines all over the world have security procedures. Before any passenger can get on an airplane at the airport, he must go through a series of security checks to make sure he isn't carrying anything that ispotentially dangerous or could be used as a weapon on board. The security measures vary from airport to airport. At some airports there is very little security. At other airports thesecurity checks are very strict and it can take up to haft-an-hour to get through them all.Kai Tak Airport in Hong Kong, China, has a good security system. No aircraft starting its journey from Hong Kong has ever been hijacked. At Kai Tak, when a passenger first checks in, his or her name is matched with the computer list of passengers booked on that particular flight. If the name is not recognised, the passenger will be taken aside and questioned by security guards and may not be allowed on the plane. Next, every suitcase is X-ray checked before it goes into the plane. Any suitcase that seems to have something dangerous in it is not put on the plane. Then the hand baggage which the passengers will carry on to the plane is checked. Each passenger has to open his or her bag and the security clerk examines the contents. If there is anything that could be used as a weapon, a penknife for example, the security staff take it away and keep it in a safe place on the plane until the flight is over. The passenger can then collect it.Finally there is a body check of all passengers. They must pass through a door where X-rays will show if they are carrying anything made of metal, like a gun. If anything suspicious is found, they will be asked to explain. Looking at tree rings is more important. Correct weather reports date back only one century, but some trees can provide an exact record of the weather even further back. (53) It is natural that a tree would grow best in a climate with plenty of sunlight and rainfall. It is also expected that little sunlight or rainfall would limit the growth of a tree. The change from a favorable to an unfavorable climate can be determined by reading the pattern of rings in a treetrunk. (54) To find out the weather of ten years ago, count the rings of a tree trunk from the outside to the inside. If the tenth ring is far from the other rings, then it is certain that plenty of sunny and rainy weather occurred. If the rings are close together, then the climate was bad for the tree. Studying tree rings is important not only for the history of weather, but also for the history of man. In a region of New Mexico you can f ind only sand-no trees and no people. However, many centuries ago a large population lived there. They left suddenly. Why? A scientist studied patterns of dead tree rings which had grown there. He decided that the people had to leave because they had cut down all the trees. Trees were necessary to make fires and buildings. So, after the people destroyed the trees, they had to move. In this instance studying tree rings uncovered an exciting fact about the history of man.36. Forexample, if a person says, “you know, Barbara, I really like you,” it hasdifferent meanings depending on whether it is said by a man or a woman, in anoffice or a bar context, the tone of voice, the stress put on certain words, aswell as the eye contact, physical distance, and the relationship between thesparker and the listener are all factors which give meaning to what’s beingsaid. Sometimes, these factors can generate much more meaning than the wordsthemselves. If a friend say to me, “Gee, I can’t wait to see the result of theupcoming election.” my interpretation of that message will be based upon myknowledge of my friend’s political views, the situation with the currentcampaign, and my ability to understand the meaning behind the tone of voice. Our ability tounderstand such cue is developed without us being aware of it through ourprocess of socialization. Our interpretation of these cues just comesnaturally. Every culture has its own set of culture cues that each member ofthat culture understands. It’s common how a person from culture A and a personfrom culture B interpret the very same words in totally different ways. Hereare some examples:When “Sarcasm”Means“Sincerity”Marsha thought things were going well with her new French friends, particularly Bertrand. He often invited her to interesting and fun events, buthe was often making fun of her. One day at an art exhibition, while looking ata particularly abstract piece,Marsha said that she couldn’t understand whatthe artist was trying to express. Bertrand smiled and responded,” Yes, I’mafraid French art is far too advanced for Americans to understand.” Marsha wasupset; she really liked him and coul dn’t figure out what caused him tofrequently make fun of her. So, she asked her host mother about it. “My dear,”the host mother told her, “ This means that he really likes you. In France, when someone feels comfortable enough to make fun of you, that means that you havebeen welcomed as a very close friend.”When “Now” Doesn’tMean “Now”’Joshua, an American student in Heredia, Costa Rican invited his partnerto meet for coffee. When he asked what time they should meet, the response was“Nos encontramos ahora en elparquet”. “Ahora” literally means now. So, hegrabbed his jacket and headed straight to the park where they agreed to meet.Half an hour later, his friend arrived without the least sign of regret forbeing late. After discussing the matter with his Spanish teacher, Joshualearned that in Costa Rica, “Ahora” meanssometime within the hour. And, if people decide to meet some place like park,it is no problem for one or the other to wait for a while because they willspend some nice time in the park, probably running into some other friends, ormeeting someone friendly. When “Yes”Doesn’t Mean“Yes”Many business people might have experiencedthis frustrating situation in Japan. Sarah, a young businesswoman from NewYork, was sent to Japan to close a big deal for her company. While giving herpresentation, she became more and more certain of sale because her Japanesebusiness partnerscontinually nodded their heads as she spoke. When shefinished she thought the deal was made and asked when they would like to signthe agreement. She was shocked when she was told that they were not yet sure ifthey wanted to make the deal or not. What Sarah did not know is that in Japan, nodding head does not necessarily mean “yes” as it does in the US. It can alsomean “yes, I am listening and understanding what you are saying.”Passage TwoThe automobile hasgiven people incredible freedom of movement. It enables them to decide wherethey want to go andwhen. The automobile influences where people live and workand how they spend their leisure time. The striking changes in people’s livescreated by the automobile began in the United States and have since spreadacross much of the globe, especially in developed countries. But even indeveloping nations, the automobile is increasingly reshaping patterns ofliving. When the firstautomobiles were produced, only the well-to-docould afford them. Soon, however, prices declined as production increased inresponse to the growing demand. The lower prices put the automobile withinreach of more and more Americans. Well-off urban residents found car ownershipcheaper than keeping a horse and carriage. The growth in car ownership led tothe building of more and better roads, which further increased travelthroughout the nation. Before the development of automobiles, urban workerswalked, bicycled, or rode horse-drawn vehicles to their jobs. But as roadsimproved and car ownership expanded, workers no longer had to live near theirjobs.During the 1920s, peoplein U.S. cities increasingly moved to the suburbs because of the freedomprovided to the workers by automobile ownership. By the mid-1950s, even factories hadbegun to relocate in the suburbs. Wherever people have easy access toautomobiles, cars play a major role in social life and the choice ofrecreational activities. People find it fun to hop in the car and visit friendsand relatives, whether the drive takes a few minutes, hours, or days. Trips byautomobile help make it easy to organize picnics, family reunions, and otherget-togethers. Trips by automobile to such places as theme parks, nationalparks, and mountain and seashore resorts are a favorite type of vacation formany people.Passage ThreeTo become asuccess in high-tech Silicon Valley, Alan Aerts used low-tech skills and hardwork. He carried boxes of produce for a grocery store and sold bread torestaurants while launching a vending machine business that sells soft drinksand snack foods to workaholic computer engineers. In 1980, on hisroute as a bread salesman for a bakery, Aerts ran into the owner of a Pac Mangame control panel who was servicing his equipment at a restaurant in Oakland,California. Aerts, who always wore a shirt and tie on sales calls, wasimpressed by the other fellow’s jeans and T shirt and resolved to branch out onhis own.But capitalism requires capital, and Aertshad little money to spare. Living paycheck to paycheck with his wife andnewborn son, he worked days at the bakery and nights at a grocery store to paythe mortgage. During downtime between jobs, he developed his business strategy.“I’m sure I did every wrong thing you can possibly do,” says Aerts. “But I knewthat with enough hard work, it would all make sense.”To get hisbusiness off the ground, he relied on a second mortgage and credit cards, sometimes paying rates as high as 19%, to buy video game and vending machines. After purchasing several machines at retail price, he realized he could buythem directly from the manufacturers for less. And he learned that vendingmachines were more profitable than video games, which needed to be replacedfrequently to keep up with the fickletastes of gamers. Aerts used the contacts he made through his bakery job toprospect for new business. To hedge his bets, he put in ten years at thegrocery store to earn a modest pension.Today, Aerts’scompany, Custom Vendi ng Systems, is the largest privately owned vendor in theregion. He says business is booming as the Valley’s economy blossoms after its2000 bust. In 2005, Aerts and his wife donated $ 2.5 million to fundscholarships at the local community college. He’s stil l busy around theclock, but now he dedicates evenings and weekends to charity work and localpolitics instead of a second job.Section BDirections: Matchthe Chinese sentences with their EnglishEquivalents.Part 1Part 2。

The change from a favorable to an unfavorable climate can be determined by reading the pattern of rings in a tree trunk. In a region of New Mexico you can find only sand-no trees and no people. It is understood that in a favorable climateA. tree rings grow close togetherB. tree rings grow far apartC. trees in New Mexico will grow big and tallD. people can cut down most of the trees in New Mexico37.
