YouthYouth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life. Youth means a tempera-mental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spring back to dust. Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonder, the unfaili ng childlike appetite of what’s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young. When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at 20, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at 80.Knowledge and virtueKnowledge is one thing, virtue is another; good sense is not conscience, refinement is not humility, nor is largeness and justness of view faith. Philosophy, however enlightened, however profound, gives no commandover the passions, no influential motives, no vivifying principles. Liberal Education makes not the Christian, not the Catholic, but the gentleman. It is well to be a gentleman, it is well to have a cultivated intellect, a delicate taste, a candid, equitable, dispassionate mind, a noble and courteous bearing in the conduct of life--these are the connatural qualities of a large knowledge; they are the objects of a University; I am advocating, I shall illustrate and insist upon them; but still, I repeat, they are no guarantee for sanctity or even for conscientiousness, they may attach to the man of the world, to the profligate, to the heartless, pleasant, alas, and attractive as he shows when decked out in them. Taken by themselves, they do but seem to be what they are not; they look like virtue at a distance, but they are detected by close observers, and on the long run; and hence it is that they are popularly accused of pretense and hypocrisy, not, I repeat, from their own fault, but because their professors and their admirers persist in taking them for what they are not, and are officious in arrogating for them a praise to which they have no claim. Quarry the granite rock with razors, or moor the vessel with a thread of silk, then may you hope with such keen and delicate instruments as human knowledge and human reason to contend against those giants, the passion and the pride of man.A poor farmer had a friend who was famous for the wonderful apple he grew. One day, his friend gave the farmer a young apple tree and told himto take it home and plant it. The farmer was pleased with the gift, but when he got home he did not know where to plant it. He was afraid that if he planted the tree near the road, strangers would steal the fruit. If he planted the tree in one of his field, his neighbors would come at night and steal some of the apples. If he planted the tree near his house, his children would take the fruit. Finally he planted the tree in his wood where no one could see it. But without sunlight and good soil, the tree soon died. Later the friend asked the farmer why he had planted the tree in such a poor place."What's the difference?" the farmer said angrily. "If I had planted the tree near the road, strangers would have stolen the fruit. If I had planted the tree in one of my field, my neighbors would have come at night and stolen some of the apples. If I had planted it near my house, my own children would have taken the fruit." "Yes," said the friend, "but at least someone could have enjoyed the fruit. Now you not only have robbed everyone of the fruit, but also you have destroyed a good apple tree!"A lesson of lifeeverything happens for the best,”my mother said whenever I faced disappointment. "If you can carry on, one day something good will happen. And you'll realize that it wouldn't have happened if not for that previous disappointment." Mother was right, as I discovered after graduating from college in 1932.I had decided to try for a job in radio, then work my way up to sports announcer. I hitchhiked to Chicago and knocked on the door ofevery station-and got turned down every time. In one studio, a kind lady told me that big stations couldn't risk hiring inexperienced person-"Go out in the sticks and find a small station that'll give you a chance,”she said. I thumbed home to Dixon, Illinois. While them was no radio-announcing jobs in Dixon, my father sad Montgomery Ward had opened a store and wanted a local athlete to manage its sports department. Since Dixon was where I had played high school football, I applied. The job sounded just right for me. But I wasn't hired. My disappointment must have shown. "Everything happens for the best," Mom reminded me. Dad offered me the car to job hunt. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport, Iowa. The program director, a wonderful Scotsman named Peter MacArthur, told me they had already hired an announcer. As I left his office, my frustration boiled over. I asked a1oud,"How can a fellow get to be a sport announcer if he can't get a job in a radio station?" I was waiting for the elevator when I heard MacArthur calling, "What was that you said about sports? Do you know anything about football?"Then he stood me before a microphone and asked me to broadcast an imaginary game. On my way home, as I have many times since, I thought of my mother's words: "if you carry on, one day something good will happen. Something wouldn't have happened if not for that previous disappointment" I often wonder what direction my life might have taken if I’d gotten the job at Montgomery Ward.。

When God Created FathersWhen the good Lord was creating fathers, He started with a tall frame. A female angel nearby said, “What kind of father is that? If you are going to make children so close to the ground, why have you putthe father up so high? He will be able to shoot marbles(弹子游戏)without kneeling, tuck a child in bed without bending, or even kiss achild without a lot of stooping(弯腰).”And God smiled and said, “Yes, but if I make him child size, who would chil dren have to look up to?”And when God made a father‟s hands, they were large and sinewy. And the angel shook her head sadly and said, “Do you know what you‟re doing? Large hands are clumsy. They can‟t manage diaper pins别针, small buttons, rubber bands橡皮筋on pony tails马尾, oreven remove splinters碎片caused by baseball b ats.”God smiled and said, “I know, but they are large enough to hold everything a small boy empties from his pockets at the end of a day, yet small enou gh to cup a child‟s face.”Then God molded long slim legs and broad shoulders. The angel nearly had a heart attack. “Boy, this is the end of the we ek, all right,” she clucked.“Do you realize You just made a father without a lap? How is he going to pull a child close to him without the kid falling between his legs?”God smiled and said, “A mother need s a lap大腿. A father needs strong shoulders to pull a sledge雪橇, balance a boy on a bicycle or hold a sleepy head on the way home from the circus.”God was in the middle of creating two of the largest feet anyone had ever seen when the angel could contain he rself no longer. “That‟s not fair. Do you honestly think those large boats are going to get out of bed early in the morning when the baby cries? Or walk through a small birthday party without crushing at least three of the guests?”And God smiled and said, “They‟ll work. You‟ll see. They‟ll support a small child who wants to …ride a horse to Banbury Cross‟ or scare off mice at the summer cabin, or display shoes that will be a challenge to fill.”God worked through the night, giving the father few words, but a firm authoritative voice; eyes that see everything, but remain calm andtolerant. Finally, almost as an afterthought, He added tears. Then He turned to the angel and said, “Now are you satisfied that he can love as much as a mother?”And the angel shut up.A Poem by an Unknown AuthorOnce upon a time there was a child ready to be born. One day he asked God: "They tell me you are sending me to earth tomorrow, how am I going to live there being so small and helpless?"GOD replied, "Among the many angels, I chose one for you. She will be waiting for you and will take care of you.""But tell me, here in Heaven, I don't do anything else but sing and smile, that's enough for me to be happy.""Your angel will sing for you and will also smile for you every day. And you will feel your angel's love and be happy.""And how am I going to be able to understand when people talk to me, if I don't know the language that men talk?""Your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet words you will ever hear, and with much patience and care, your angel will teach you how to speak.""And what am I going to do when I want to talk to you?""Your angel will place your hands together and will teach you how to pray.""I've heard that on earth there are bad men. Who will protect me?""Your angel will defend you even if it means risking its life.""But I will always be sad because I will not see you anymore.""Your angel will always talk to you about me and will teach you the way for you to come back to me, even though I will always be next to you."At that moment there was much peace in Heaven, but voices from earth could already be heard. And the child in a hurry asked softly: "Oh God, if I am about to leave now, please tell me my angel's name.""Your angel's name is of no importance, you will call your angel: 'Mommy'."A Mother's LoveThere is no love, like a mother's love,no stronger bond on earth...like the precious bond that comes from God, to a mother, when she gives birth.A mother's love is forever strong, never changing for all time...and when her children need her most,a mother's love will shine.God bless these special mothers,God bless them every one...for all the tears and heartache, and for the special work they've done. When her days on earth are over,a mother's love lives on...through many generations, with God's blessings on each one.Be thankful for our mothers, for they love with a higher love...from the power God has given, and the strength from up above. by Jill Lemming。
