“奥斯卡金像奖”的正式名称是“电影艺术与科学学院奖”,英文缩写为AA,1928年设立,每年一次在美国洛杉矶好莱坞举行,半个多世纪一直享有盛誉。
每年的颁奖典礼都会在超过100个国家进行电视直播,其在美国电影界的地位与针对音乐的格莱美奖、针对电视的艾美奖、针对戏剧的托尼奖相当,而这些奖也都是以学院奖为榜样而建立的。

评选
奥斯卡金像奖从1929年开始每年评选颁发一次,从未间断。
凡上年一月一日至十二月三十一日上演的影片均可参加评选。
金像奖的评选经过两轮投票:第一轮是提名投票,先由学院下属各部门负责提名(采用记名方式),获得提名的影片,将在学院本部轮流放映,观后学院的所有会员再进行第二轮投票(采用不记名方式),最后以得票的多少决定影片是否获奖。
