The 30-year-old owner of Gashora Farm knows what a difference that makes.“You need more role models,” he said, standing among knee-high rows of chilli (辣椒) plants. “If you have young farmers, they have land and they drive to the farm, others may think, ‘Why can’t I do that?’”Mr. Twahirwa, a university graduate, bought a friend’s tomato farm six years ago for $ 150. He made $ 1, 500 back in two months. “You have to link farming with entrepreneurship and real numbers,” he said. Many young Africans are abandoning areas in the countryside, choosing not to work hard and for a long time in fields — a job made tougher by climate change. But Twahirwa is one of the growing band of successful farmers working to make agriculture’s image on the continent more attractive. Some 1, 000 farmers now produce chillies for him. He is starting a fourth farm of his own, and exports fresh and dried chillies and oil to Britain, the United States, India and Kenya.Africa has the world’s youngest population and 65 percent uncultivated arable land (耕地后备资源).Yet accessing land and loans is difficult, and African productivity is low with crop yields just 56 percent of the international average.“Agriculture is mainly associated with suffering and no young person wants to suffer,” said Tamara Kaunda. She believes African agriculture needs a change to get rid of its old-fashioned image of very hard and tiring work with a hoe. “Show young people with tractors, green fields, nice irrigation systems smartphones,” she said.Getting young people involved in agriculture does not mean they have to work on a farm. For example, in coffee production, the beans go from the farm to the washing station , then to be separated from the husks (外壳).14.What does “Why can’t I do that?” in Paragraph 2 mean?B.Why can’t they farm?C.They follow the example of those farmers.D.They bought a friend’s tomato farm.15.What makes it harder for farmers to work?A.Poor land.B.Climate.C.Low income.D.Long working hours.16.What can we learn about Twahirwa according to Paragraph 5 ?A.He made a fortune by growing chillies.B.His chillies are try growing chillies.C.Farmers working for him live a simple life.D.The locals aren't willing to buy his chillies.17.When it comes to agriculture in Africa, what do people think about it?A.Loans are difficult.B.Most land is uncultivated.C.Crop yields are rather lowD.Farming methods are out of dateAt the foot of an Icelandic volcano, a newly-opened plant is taking CO₂ from the air and turning it to rock. This technology is known as “direct air capture(捕捉)” or DAC.It’s a bit like “mining” the sky for CO₂—simple in principle, but very difficult to carry out.To do this, you need the right geography conditions. That is why Climeworks, a Swiss company, built the Orca plant in Iceland. There, fans draw air into big black containers where the filter(过滤器) catches CO₂. Once the filter is full, it is heated to around 100₂ to separate CO₂ with sufficient energy from volcanic activity. Next, the collected CO₂ is combined with water and pumped deep underground into rock formations. Within a few years, the CO₂ will turn into stone. However, exciting and promising as this technology is, it won’t save us from climate change on its own. While Orca, the largest plant of its kind in the world, can capture up to 4,000 tons of CO₂ per year, the yearly global emissions(排放) are around 33.4 billion tons ofexpensive and requires large amounts of energy.Daniel Egger, the chief commercial officer at Climeworks, said that while his company is at an “industrial level”, it is not where it needs to be to make a difference in fighting climate change. But we have to learn to walk before we can run.Carbon storage(碳储存) is just arising as a technology. It won’t help us fix climate change yet, but it can be important down the line, if we have the right conditions for it. 18.What can we learn about DAC according to the text?A.It is the best way to fix climate change at present.B.It requires enough heat and energy to operate.C.It is highly developed in removing CO₂.D.It can be applied anywhere in the world.19.Why are some data used in paragraph 3?A.To indicate the bright future of the technology.B.To provide the research results for the readers.C.To show the challenges DAC faces at present.D.To call for more plants like Orca to be set up.20.What is the author’s attitude towards the technology?A.Unclear.B.Uninterested.C.Doubtful.D.Hopeful.21.From which is the text probably taken?A.A science report.B.A company leaflet.C.A chemistry textbook.D.A social web page.Mirroring body language is a way to bond and to build understanding. It is a powerful tool that we use without even knowing it.The most obvious forms of mirroring are yawning and smiling. When you see someone yawn, you are likely to yawn immediately. Smiling is also pretty contagious—seeing aMirroring body language is a nonverbal way to say “I am like you or I feel the same”. Research shows that people who experience the same feelings are likely to trust, understand and accept each other. Women have the natural ability to pick up and understand body signals. Therefore, it is not surprising that a woman is more likely to mirror another woman than a man is to mirror another man. That’s why women are regarded as better talkers, even if they might not really have more close friends.Mirroring body language is an excellent way to build trust and understanding quickly. If you want to set up a connection with others, mirror their gestures, sitting position, tone of voice and talking pace. This will make them feel that there is something about you that they like. While mirroring body language gains you acceptance, you still need to take into consideration your relationship with the person you are mirroring. If you are in a lower social position and are mirroring the body language of your boss, he will view you as rude. However, if you want to defeat those who are trying to prove superior to you, mirroring their body language will help defeat them and change their position.22.What does the underlined word “contagious” in paragraph 2 mean?A.Affecting each other.B.Showing one’s feelings.C.Attractive to the others.D.Gentle to people around.23.What can we know about women from the research?A.They don’t like mirroring others.B.They tend to have more close friends.C.They are naturally gifted in building trust.D.They are good at interpreting body language.24.What is the author’s attitude to the behavior of mirroring the boss?A.Indifferent.B.Curious.C.Doubtful.D.Disapproving. 25.What is the best title for the text?A.The Common Forms of MirroringB.The Excellent Method of MirroringC.Mirroring Body Language:A Useful ToolD.Nonverbal Communication:A Special BondMuch of the work in today’s world is accomplished(完成) in teams. Most people believeCompanies spend millions hiring top business people. Is their money well spent?27 They focused on football, basketball and baseball. The results are mixed. For football and basketball, adding talented players to a team proves a good method, but only up to the point where 70% of the players are top talent; above that level, the team’s performance begins to decline. Interestingly, this trend isn’t evident in baseball, where additional individual talent keeps improving the team’s performance. To explain this phenomenon, the researchers explored the degree to which a good performance by a team requires its members to coordinate(协调) their actions. 28 In baseball, the performance of individual players is less dependent on teammates. They conclude that when task interdependence is high, team performance will suffer when there is too much talent, while individual talent will have positive effects on team performance when task interdependence is lower. If a basketball star is, for example, trying to gain a high personal point total, he may take a shot himself when it would be better to pass the ball to a teammate, affecting the team’s performance. Young children learning to play team sports are often told, “There is no I in TEAM.” 29Another possibility is that when there is a lot of talent on a team, some players may make less effort. Just as in a game of tug-of-war(拔河比赛), whenever a person is added, everyone else pulls the rope with less force.30 An A-team may require a balance--not just A players, but a few generous B players as well.A.It’s not a simple matter to determine the nature of talent.B.Sports team owners spend millions of dollars attracting top talent.C.The group interaction and its effect drew the researchers’ attention.D.Stars apparently do not follow this basic principle of sportsmanship.E.Several recent studies examined the role of talent in the sports world.F.Building up a dream team is more complex than simply hiring the best talent.G.This task interdependence distinguishes baseball from football and basketball.William ThomsonWilliam Thomson was born on 26 June, 1824 in Belfast. He was taught by his father, a professor of mathematics. In 1832, the family moved to Glasgow where Thomson attended university at the age of 10, then studied at Cambridge and Paris Universities. In 1846 he became professor of natural philosophy in Glasgow, a post he 31 for more than 50 years. In Glasgow, Thomson 32 the first physics laboratory in Britain. His 41 in marine issues also inspired him to develop a mariners’ compass and 42 a tide machine and depth-measuring equipment. He invented many electrical instruments and his house in Glasgow was the first to be 43 by electric light.Thomson was raised to the noblemen with the 44 of Baron Kelvin of Largs in 1892.

AFrom December 1st, 2023 to November 30th, 2024, visitors can stay in China for up to 15 days without a visa. Below are several easy steps for planning a first China tour.Decide How Many Days to StayWe suggest you take at least a week for your first trip to see the highlights in the top three cities: Beijing (3–4 days), Xi’an (2 days), and Shanghai (1–2 days). To discover more of China, like charming Guilin and lovely Chengdu pandas, you would need a few more days.Consider When to Travel to ChinaThings to do in Beijing, Xi’an, and Shanghai are seldom affected by the seasons.Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are generally the most comfortable and recommended times for a China tour. They are neither too hot nor too cold, but fall is generally drier and warmer than spring.A more ideal travel time for you could be March and early April or September when there are smaller crowds, favorable prices, and still good weather.China is a good summer holiday destination too.Consider Your BudgetThe biggest cost could be international airfares. The cost of airfares from the US or Europe to China varies a lot depending on when you fly and which airline you use, from around US$1,200 to US$3,000 for an economy round trip. The biggest price difference between the off and peak seasons is in the price of hotels and airfares. Prices in peak seasons can go up by 50 to 100%.For a private tour, the average cost per day is about US$220–350 per person, including flights/trains within China, 4- or 5-star hotels, lunches, attractions, guides, and private transport. We Believe Private and Tailor-Made Tours Are BestWith our private tours, you would have much more personal choice in how your tour goes. You could have more hand-picked and interactive experiences, like visiting a local family with your own local guide. With private guiding and transport, we would make full use of your time. You could focus on the sightseeing you want to do, skipping what’s not of interest and the long queues in the most crowded attractions.21. If you have a tour in China in winter, which places are suitable for you?A. Beijing and Guilin.B. Xi’an and Chengdu.C. Shanghai and Chengdu.D. Beijing and Xi’an.22. What can we know from the text?A. A visa is needed for a 12-day tour.B. The highest expense is the accommodation fee.C. Travelling in March can save tourists money.D. Prices in peak seasons usually go up by 150%.23. Which of the following is NOT the reason why a tailor-made tour is recommended?A. You have more choices about your route.B. Your time will be maximized.C. You are likely to interact with locals in person.D. You will spend less on the tour.BThree years into my postdoc(博士后), I started to wonder whether I needed a new career plan. After applying for more than two dozen teaching jobs, I hadn’t landed a single interview.I had once considered going to art school but had put that idea to the side when I decided to pursue chemistry as an undergraduate. In the years that followed, I kept up my interest in art by taking painting classes at night. My family was bursting with mathematicians, computer programmers, and engineers, so it felt natural to have my daily life center around science. But in the spring after my failed job search, that started to change after a friend excitedly showed me proofs of a review article. She was astonished by what the journal’s scientific illustrator had done with her fundamental sketches(速写). “That would be such a fun job.” I thought.I decided to test out a new career direction by volunteering to create similar illustrations for my institute’s newsletters. I spent my nights and weekends reading scientific papers and thinking about how to illustrate the results. It was a fun task. I felt I was perhaps on the right path. But could I make a full-time career?Searching online, I tracked down people who had that kind of job. I found many had training through scientific illustration master’s degree programs. After living on graduate student and postdoctoral salaries for years, I didn’t have enough money saved up for the programs, so I decided to get a certificate in digital design.I now work as a visual designer at a biomedical research institute where I spend my days working with research to communicate their work visually. I love the fact that I get to combine my scientific and artistic sides.24. Why did the author attend classes at night?A. To please her family.B. To pass her undergraduate tests.C. To pursue her hobby.D. To complete optional courses in art.25. What effect did the proofs have on the author?A. They shook her belief in science.B. They tested out what she learned in class.C. They gave her inspiration for her scientific paper.D. They motivated her to find a new career direction.26. What prevented the author seeking a scientific illustration master’s degree?A. Her busy schedule.B. Her financial difficulties.C. Her new interest in digital design.D. Her lack of confidence.27. How does the author feel about her current job?A. Pressured.B. Desperate.C. Curious.D. Satisfied.CAdministrators of the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, Gansu province, are striving to harmonize tourists’ exploration of the site with the need to safeguard murals and artifacts, through innovative measures such as digital presentations.Sandstorms, rainfall and tourist visits constitute the most severe threats to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, said Wang Xiaowei, director of the Dunhuang Grottoes Monitoring Center at the Dunhuang Academy.Since the Mogao Caves opened to the public in 1979, the number of visitors has been growing at an average annual rate of around 20 percent, reaching 2.15 million in 2019 before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Thisyear, the site is expected to receive a record 3 million visitors.“If you enter the caves during the peak tourism months of July, August and September, you’ll find it hard to breathe,” Wang said. The carbon dioxide and moisture exhaled by visitors accumulate inside the caves and cause damage to the murals, Wang said.To preserve the caves, the duration of visits is limited and sometimes stopped during rain or dust storms. To try and ensure visitors aren’t disappointed when restrictions are in place, the center provides a digital exhibition, he said.Currently, the center is being expanded to cater for an additional 3,000 visitors on top of the existing capacity of 6,000.The Dunhuang Academy began digitally recording and storing images of murals and painted sculptures over 30 years ago. The digitization project has successfully covered over 200 caves, with a dedicated team of 110 experts currently undertaking the work. The Mogao Caves are immovable, and transporting them is impossible, according to Su Bomin, head of the Dunhuang Academy. And he added, “However, with digitization, we can perfectly replicate Dunhuang art and showcase it worldwide, introducing Eastern culture to the world.”In 2016, the Digital Dunhuang repository went live, sharing high-definition images and panoramic tours of the most exquisite 30 caves globally. Currently, visitors from 78 countries have accessed the repository, totaling over 16.8 million visits.Su said Dunhuang can provide diverse cultural exchanges through its cultural relics. “By digitizing these relics, we enable people worldwide to understand Dunhuang’s culture, thereby gaining a deeper appreciation for China’s historical commitment to diverse cultural exchanges — that is, an ethos of inclusivity, mutual learning and a shared future,” he said.28. Which of the following is NOT the reason for providing a digital exhibition?A. The factors related to COVID-19 put the caves in grave danger.B. The increasing number of tourists visiting Dunhuang might harm the caves.C. The authority is aimed to balance tourism and relics conservation.D. The duration of visits is limited and sometimes stopped during rain or dust storms.29. What does the underlined word “replicate” probably mean?A. Copy.B. Safeguard.C. Access.D. Transport.30. What does Su Bomin think of digitization?A. It records and stores images of murals and painted sculptures.B. It shares high definition and panoramic tours of the most exquisite caves.C. It allows for an international exchange of cultures through the relics.D. It enables people to appreciate the lasting beauty of the murals.31. What can be the best title for the text?A. The Significance of the Mural PaintingsB. The Restoration in Mogao CavesC. The Innovation on Mogao Caves’ PreservationD. The Dunhuang Spirit in Chinese CultureDThe road to Mars is long and fraught with peril. One challenge is getting humans to the red planet; another is ensuring that once they’ve arrived, they’ll be able to manage life there. To prepare astronauts for an extended stay on Mars, NASA’s latest simulated mission, CHAPEA — Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog — will isolate four people inside a mock-Mars base in Texas for 378 days — roughly the time a manned mission to Mars would spend on the surface.Once inside they will adopt a pre-planned schedule taking part in simulated activities and science work, eating like astronauts, and dealing with maintenance and equipment failures, while undergoing strenuous psychological and physiological testing. The first simulation will begin in June, and will be followed by two more, each with a different crew in identical conditions, with the last simulation starting in 2026.“We’ve built a high-accuracy Mars surface mission scenario,” says Scott M. Smith, co-investigator for CHAPEA. The participants will experience a 22-minute delay in external communications, as astronauts would on Mars. Ambient noise will be played through speakers around the base, ensuring no outside sounds can be heard by participants.Aiming for accuracy has resulted in a habitat that could be feasibly built on Mars, Smith adds. The base, called “Mars Dune Alpha”, is a custom design by Bjarke Ingels Group and 3D-printing company ICON, and resides inside a hangar at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Printed in a month from ICON’s concrete formula dubbed “Lavacrete”, on Mars, the idea is to build using Martian soil.“NASA has evaluated a tremendous number of options for off-world habitat construction — repurposed rockets and landers, inflatables, assembled buildings, etc.,” explains ICON CEO Jason Ballard. “They’ve come to believe what we believe: that when you evaluate it from a financial, safety and flexibility standpoint, robotic construction using local materials is far and away the best option.”32. What’s the purpose of NASA’s latest simulated mission?A. To get astronauts to Mars.B. To isolate four people inside a base in Mars.C. To help astronauts to do experiments in Mars.D. To prepare astronauts for managing life in Mars.33. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A. The last simulation will end in 2026.B. Each stimulation has a different crew in the same conditions.C. The participants can hear outside sounds.D. The participants will do things different from those that astronauts do.34. What’s Smith’s attitude to the simulated mission?A. Indifferent.B. Pessimistic.C. Optimistic.D. Skeptical.35. What is the most commonly used technique in the text?A. Making comparison.B. AIt was an old day when I set out for a run in Moab, Utah, with my dog, Taz. As an athlete I often went for a run by myself. While running along a canyon (峡谷) road, I hit a piece of ice. Islipped down the rock face and fell 60 feet into the canyon, landing on a ledge (岩脊). Taz found his way to me, so I knew there must be a way out of the canyon, but I couldn’t stand, as I had broken an important bone.I shouted for help but then decided to move to the bottom of the canyon first. The ledge was too dangerous to stay. It took me five hours to go a quarter of a mile. Eventually it got dark, and I decided to stay where I was for the night, next to a puddle of water. All I had on me was a water bottle and some chocolates. At night, I avoided sleeping for fear of dying of hypothermia (低体温症). Taz stayed with me, providing some warmth. The next morning, I couldn’t move at all. But I was sure somebody would hear me screaming for help. The second night in the canyon seemed even colder. My feet were frostbitten (冻伤). On the third day, I accepted the fact that I might die. I called Taz over and told him to go and get help.Taz returned, alone. Then I heard an engine in the distance. I started shouting for help, and then I saw a man walking towards me. It turned out that my neighbor noticed I hadn’t come home, and Taz had found the rescue team. I was airlifted to hospital, where doctors found I was seriously wounded, having lost half of my blood.Five years on, I still think about the experience. I couldn’t run like I used to due to the after-effects of the accident, and cold weather brings back bad memories, but I’m married with two kids, and Taz is still alive. Realizing you have a second chance to live puts things into perspective.21. Why did the author try to move to the bottom of the canyon?A. To reach a safe place.B. To climb back to the road.C. To come across some helper.D. To avoid being attacked by wild animals.22. What was the biggest challenge the author faced during the nights in the canyon?A. Lack of food.B. Physical pain.C. Fear of death.D. Low temperature.23. What can we infer from the rescue?A. Taz turned to the author’s neighbor for help.B. The author stayed in the canyon for 3 nights.C. The author didn’t hold out much hope of his dog.D. The rescue team was required by the author's neighbor.BA new research, presented on Monday, suggests that parents who go down slides with their kids are actually making slides even riskier for their little ones.Led by Dr. Charles Jennissen, a professor at the University of Iowa, the research found that placing children (especially infants and toddlers蹒跚学步的小孩) on adult laps increases the risk of injury to their lower legs, including broken bones."I've seen a lot of these injuries all through my career, and I hadn't seen anybody talk about this problem," says Jennissen. So Jennissen and his colleagues found that about 350,000 children under the age of six were injured on slides in the U.S. from 2002 to 2015. Injuries were most common among kids from12-23 months of age, and the most common injury was lower leg fractures (骨折).The researchers found that 94 percent of 600 cases include lower leg injuries. This is important, because that's not how a kid falling off a slide alone would usually get hurt. The fact that so many kids are getting lower leg injuries—and that those injuries seem to get less common as kids get older—suggests something else is at play.Jennissen thinks that when children are sliding alone, they aren’t going fast enough or carrying enough body weight to hurt themselves. When they’re sitting on an adult’s lap and their foot gets caught, they have the added momentum of an adult body."We think a lot of these lower extremity injuries are because they're on the lap," says Jennissen. "We don't know that for sure, because no parents say that. But from my experience, and the data that suggests it, we think almost all of these are kids are on the lap."Jennissen isn’t arguing that you should never go down the slide with your kid—he agrees that it’s fun and that he’s done it with his own kids—but he thinks adults should realize the risks.24. What can we learn about the research from the passage?A. Many parents are hurt when going down slides with their kids.B. Dr. Charles Jennissen is the leader of the research team.C. More and more adult laps are found hurt in the accidents.D. Many people have discussed the possible reasons for the injuries.25. The underlined phrase at play in Para.5 probably means _____.A. taking effectB. paying attentionC. making effortsD. solving problems26. What is Jennissen’s attitude towards parents’ going down slides with kids?A. He supports it.B. He is against it.C. He is careful about it.D. He doesn’t care about it.CWalmart will soon use 360 robot cleaners across a few hundred of its stores. Using maps input by human employees, the AI-powered cleaners will travel in the store with no difficulty, sweeping the floor--just as human employees used to do.Perhaps the most striking thing about these robot workers is how not-striking they are. Sci-fi movies suggest a future full of human-like robots who appear with their horrible qualities. Now the future is coming into view, and it looks like a giant lie. It's easy to imagine walking past an Auto-C on a shopping trip without even noticing its presence.AI has already started to become a part of our everyday life. In New Jersey this week, dozens of workers were hospitalized after a robot at an Amazon fulfillment centre accidentally broke a can and enveloped workers in eye-and-lung-damaging gas. Days earlier in California, an auto-piloted Tesla drove a drunk, sleeping driver down a highway, which no doubt did some potential risk to the other drivers on the road. Highway patrol officers figured out on the spot how to stop the AI car.Of course, industrial accidents and drunk drivers existed well before AI. Tools with the power to release the burden of physical labor—horses, steam machines, self-driving cars—also come with the power to injure. And the presence of AI-powered machines just steps away fromus is, for now, still a rare thing for most people. But the nature of robots’ coming into our daily life lives will make it harder to recognize—or object to—the bigger changes they bring later.
