Do not use the flag as part of a costume or athletic uniform. Do not print it upon cushions, handkerchiefs, paper napkins or boxes. A federal law p rovides that the trademark cannot be registered if it comprises the flag, or badgers of the US. When the flag is used to unveil a statue or monument, it shouldn’t serve as a covering of the object to be unveiled. If it is displayed on such occasions, do not al low the flag to fall to the ground, but let it be carried high up in the air to form a feature of the ceremony. Between the hours of 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., college television lounges are filled with soap opera fans who can’t wait to see the next episode in the lives of their favorite characters.Actually, soaps are more than a college favorite; they’re a youth favorite. When school is out, high-school students are in front of their TV sets. One youn g working woman admitted that she turned down a higher paying job rather than give up watching her fa vorite serials. During the 1960’s, it was uncommon for young people to watch soap operas. The mood of the sixties was very different from now. It was a time of seriousness, and talk was about social issues of great importance. Now, seriousness has been replaced by fun. Young people want to be happy. It may seem strange that th ey should turn to soap opera, which is known for showing trouble in people’s lives. But soap opera is enjoyment. Young people can identify with the soap opera character, who, li ke the college-age viewer, is looking for happy love, and probably not finding it. And soap opera give s young people a chance to feel close to people without having to bear any responsibility for their p roblems.(226 words)16. What is soap opera? __________A. Because the young people have to bear the responsibilities for their troubles.19. What can we learn from the passage? ___________A. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thought and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they ag reed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to present those sounds, and which cou ld be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words. The power of words, then, lies in their associations-----the things they bring up before our minds. Wor ds become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words re call to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the numbe r of words that mean something increases.Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words whic h appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should th erefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech sill y and vulgar.(239 words)21. The origin language is _________.A. a legend handed down from the pastB. a matter that is hidden or secretC. a question difficult to answerD. a problem not yet solved22. What is true about words? ___________A. They are used to express feelings only.B. They can not be written down.C. They are simply sounds.D. They are mysterious.23. The real power of words lies in their ________.A. propertiesB. characteristicsC. peculiarityD. representative function24. By “association”, the author means __________.A. a special qualityB. a joining of ideas in the mindC. an appearance which is puzzlingD. a strange feature25. Which of the following statements about the real poet is NOT true? _________A. He is no more than a master of words.B. He can convey his ideas in words which sing like music.C. He can move men to tears.D. His style is always charming.第三部分:词汇与结构(共20小题,每小题1分,满分20分)此部分共有20个未完成的句子,针对每个句子中未完成的部分有4个选项,请从A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there’s a big difference between “being a writer” andwriting. In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter. “You’ve got to want to write, ” I say to them, “notwant to be a writer.”The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. WhenI left a 20-year career in the U. S. Coast Guard to become a freelance writer(自由撰稿者), I had no prospects at all. What I did have was a friend who found me my room in aNew York apartment building. It didn’t even matter that it was cold and ha d no bathroom. I immediately bought a used manual typewriter and felt like a genuine writer. After a year or so, however, I still hadn’t gotten a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wantedto write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn’t going to be one of those people who die wondering “what if”. I would keep putting my dream to the test, even though itmeant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the Shadowland (虚幻世界)of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.]1. It cost about $ 2,400. At first, it was called New Amsterdam by the Dutch settlers. Later it was renamed New York by the English. The city grew rapidly. There were several reasons for this, but the most important one is its location. New York is situated on the best American harbor on the Atlantic Ocean. It also lies on the Hudson River, which allows water transportation into the middle of the United States.Today New York has a population of approximately eight million. The city has groups from many races. It is famous for its Chinatown. It also has the largest Jewish population of any city outside Israel. After the blacks were released from slavery, a large number of them moved into cities like New York, Philadelphia, and Washington. More recently, people from Puerto Rico have done the same thing.New York is made up of five boroughs(行政区). The Bronx is the only one located on themainland, with Brooklyn, Richmond, and Queens being on islands. It is a large manufacturing center because factories can be located near good water transportation. Two of the main businesses are the clothing industry and the printing industry. Most large publishing companies have their headquarters there.6.Manhattan was bought by Peter Minuit.A.TB.F答案:A7.The Indians named the city New York.A.TB.F答案:B8.New York grows so rapidly, because of its people.A.TB.F答案:B9.New York borough Bronx is not on an island.A.TB.F答案:A10.The printing industry and the clothing industry are two of the main businesses of New York.A.TB.F答案:AIn the United States, it is not customary to telephone someone very early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 pm. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it's a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance. In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A. guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from different cultures that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U.S. no one would think of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour, it would be too impolite. A person, who is 5 minutes late, will say a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence.11.What is the main idea of this passage? ________A.It is not customary to telephone someone in the morning and in sleeping hours in the U.S.B.The role of time in social life over the world.C.If people are late, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible in the U.S.D.Not every country treats the concept of time as the same.答案:B12.What does it mean in the passage if you call someone during his or her sleeping hours? _______A.A matter of work.B.A matter of life or death.C.You want to see him or her.D.You want to make an appointment with him or her.答案:B13.Which of the following time is proper if you want to make an appointment with your friend in the U.S. A.?A.at 7:00 amB.at 4:00 pmC.at the midnightD.at 4 am答案:B14.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? ________A.In the U.S.A. guests tend to feel they are highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date.B.No misunderstandings arise between people from different cultures about the concept of time.C.It may be considered foolish to make an appointment well in advance in the U.S.A..D.Promptness is valued highly in American life.答案:D15.From the passage we can safely infer that _______A.it’s a matter of life or death if you call someone in day time.B.the meaning of time differs in different parts of the world.C.it makes no difference in the U.S. whether you are early or late for a business party.D.if a person is late for a date, he needn’t make some explanation.答案:B三、词汇与语法16.Chinese is spoken by the _____number of people in the world.A.smallestB.mostrgestD.wide答案:C17.I thought that honesty _______ the best policy.A.wasB.isC.wereD.be答案:B18.- Do you want to wait?- Five days ________ too long for me to wait.A.wasB.wereC.isD.are答案:C19.He _______ lives in the house where he was born.A.alreadyB.yetC.stillD.ever答案:C20.The young lady coming over to us _____ our English teacher; the way she walks tells us that!A.must beB.can beC.would beD.could be答案:A四、完型填空There was a woman in Detroit, who had two sons. America is growing older. Fifty years ago, only 4 out of every 100 people in the United States were 65 or older. Today, 10 out of every 100 Americans are over 65. The aging of the population will affect American society in many ways — education, medicine, and business. Quietly the graying of America. has made us a very different society — one in which people have a quite different idea of what kind of behavior is suitable at various ages.
A personˊs age no longer tells you anything about his/her social position, marriage or health. There’s no longer a particular year in which one goes to school or goes to work or gets married or starts a family. The social clock that kept us on time and told us when to go to school, get a job, or stop working isn’t as strong as it used to be. It doesnˊt surprise us to hear of a 29-year-old university president or a 35-year-old grandmother, or a 70-year-old man who has become a father for the first time. Public notions are changing.
Many people say, "I am much younger than my mother — or my father — was at my age. " No one says "act your age" anymore. Weˊve stopped looking with surprise at older people who act in youthful ways.

Jacks is the name of a game that is quite popular with children. To play jacks, you will need a small rubber ball and ten small metal objects called jacks.
The rules for this game are not very difficult. To begin, you put the ten jacks on the floor or ground in front of you. Throw the ball up (but not too high) , pick up one jack, and then catch the ball. Keep the jack in your hand and then continue to pick up the other jacks one at a time. You lose your turn if you do not catch the ball, you do not pick up a jack, or you drop any jacks from your hand.
When you finish all ten jacks, you now try to do the same thing again but with two jacks at one time. This is more difficult of course. You lose your turn if you make any
of the other three mistakes or if you do not pick up exactly two jacks each time.
