AMy first wife and I only had one child. It might have been nice to have more. I would have liked a son, but we just had Carmen.I see her as my best friend. I think she always comes to me first if she has a problem. We have the same sense of humour and share many interests, except that she's crazy about animals, obsessed with them-she has always had dogs, cats, and horses in her life.We were closest when she was about four, which I think is a wonderful age for a child. That's when they need their parents most. But as soon as Carmen went to school, she seemed to grow up and grow apart from her family, and any father finds it difficult with a teenage daughter. She was very moody and had an odd group of friends. There was an endless stream of strange young men coming to our house. I remember once got annoyed with her in front of her friends and she didn't talk to me for days.I've always wanted the best for her. We sent her to a good school, but she wasn't happy there. She left because she wanted to become an actress, so with my connections I got her into a drama school, but she didn't like that either. She worked for a while doing small roles in films, but she must have found it boring although she never really said why. She got married a few years ago, her husband's a vet. Theymust be happy because they work together, and she loves animals. We have the same tastes in books and music. When she was younger, I used to take her to the opera-that's my passion-but she can't have liked it very much because she hasn't come with me for years. I don't think she goes to the cinema or watches TV much. She might watch my films, but I don't know. It's not the kind of thing she talks to me about.I'm very pleased to have Carmen. She's a good daughter, but I don't think she likes my new wife very much because she doesn't visit us very often. I'm looking forward to being a grandfather one day. I hope she'll have a son.26. But nowadays there are so many different ways of messaging someone that it could spell the death of the traditional text as we know it.Text messaging, or texting, is the art of sending a short, electronic message between two mobile phones or tablets(平板电脑).But in the last few years, messaging in this manner has been on the decline. The rise of smartphones and tablets has seen an increase in the use of instant messaging apps(应用程序), which offer a cheap alternative to conventional texts. Using wireless internet connections or mobile data networks, people can send limitless numbers of instant messages to their friends for very little cost. Unlike traditional mobile texts, the user usually only has to pay to download the app once, after which each message they send is free.Web developers soon got the message.Instant messaging apps have become popular all over the world. WhatsApp in America and Europe, WeChat in China andKakaoT alk in South Korea are but a few which have attracted hundreds of millions of people, who use the apps to chat to their friends in real time. These apps allow people to send picture messages for free-something which previously was quite costly.Research firm Informa said that almost 19 billion messages were sent per day using chat apps in 2012, compared with 17.6 billion SMS(short message service)texts. And it expects the chat app market to grow t0 50 billion per day by So does this really mean the end for communication by text?Pamela Clark-Dickson from Informa doesn't think so. She says that there are a considerable number of people who use normal mobile phones, particularly in developing countries, who prefer the SMS messaging tool:"They don't have mobile data plans, so there is an awfully big base of mobile phone users who are still going to find that SMS is the best messaging experience for them for a while."31. Why has text messaging been on the decline in recent years?A. Because sending text messages is an art.B. Because there are too many tablets nowadays.C. Because instant messaging is much cheaper.D. Because it doesn't need internet connections.33. What does the underlined part "got the message" probably mean?A. knew what people likedB. received instant messagesC. became very popularD. used the apps to chat34. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A. People won't use communication by text someday.B. People in developing countries are considerate.C. People don't use smart phones in developing countries.D. People can use SMS without any mobile data plans.35. What is best title for the passage?A. SMS TextsB. Smart PhonesC. Trends in MessagingD. Instant Message AppsCBeing honest are fundamental requirements if you want to grow spiritually and follow your true destination of personal development. It's not simply about being honest with people. While that will make you a better person and a more accepted one it's more importantly about being honest with yourself.Living your life honestly means that you've decided to live openly and to show your true self to others and that you can be relied upon to be trustworthy. On the other hand, dishonesty is all about shade and concealment and living your life in 'dark corners'. When you're dishonest, it means that you remain living in the dark and cannot grow spiritually.Honesty produces trust-trust in ourselves and in all those around us. Trust in turn produces confidence which we all need to overcome life's problems and which also encourages us to take risks in order to achieve our goals. You'll have no doubt heard expressions such as "what goes around, comesaround" and "you get back, what you give out in life" and that's very true. If you don't live your lives honestly, you can be assured that the people you'll attract will turn out to be very similar to you and it's therefore unavoidable that one day you'11 be on the receiving end of someone's dishonest actions or words. There may be situations where telling the whole truth causes you to bring a lot of pain on somebody else. For example, John may have told Paul that he can't go on a weekend fishing trip with him because he has a family commitment arranged that weekend. You know differently and that the real reason John isn't going is because he hates Paul. When Paul asks you if you know whether the reason is true, what do you say? Well, in situations like this, it's often better to be economical(经济的) with the truth. You might say that you don't know why John can't go or that you think he has something on that weekend." Of course, this isn't telling the complete truth but you are sparing Paul's feelings on something that won't, after all, have strong influence on Paul's future.36. If you want to grow spiritually, it is best for you to______.A. follow your destinationB. be true to yourselfC. plan your personal developmentD. accept honest people as衔ends37. What does a dishonest man probably do?A. He keeps all his things secret.B. He doesn't want to be trustworthy.C. He depends much on others.D. He stops growing any taller.38. The passage tells us that if you choose to live a dishonest life, you will_____.A. suffer from dishonestyB. become very attractiveC. influence honest peopleD. have attractive friends39. The example in the last paragraph is used to prove that______.A. we should always tell the truthB. John is not a trustworthy personC. telling lies causes pain on someone elseD. sometimes we can't be completely honest40. What is the main idea of the passage?A. We should be economical with the truth.B. People can gain from dishonesty.C. Honesty helps you develop.D. Trust produces confidence.DEver get that feeling you're being watched? Well, if you're a dog-owner, you may have a point. Dogs are able to watch people's interactions with one another to determine who holds yummier treats, according to a new study. This study joins others that show dogs are good observers of human behaviors and feelings. It offers evidence dogs use information not only from people's direct interactions with them, but also their interactions with one another. In the study, dogs watched a man ask two women for some of their corns. Both women gave the man corns when he asked, but in response to one woman, the man showed his enthusiasm and said the corns were so delicious. In response to the other woman, he gave the corns back and called them gross (in Spanish; the study was conducted in Argentina). After these interactions, the man left and an assistant holding the dog let the dog go. While many dogs didn't approach either woman, the dogs that did have a preference tended to prefer the woman with the yummier food. Other studies of dogs' people-watching ability have found dogs are able to tell thedifference between happy and sad faces in their owners. They prefer people who give others food when asked over people who don't give others food. And in one study, dogs turned toward crying people more often than toward talking people. So how much do dogs really understand about the humans around them? That's not totally settled yet. In a strange twist to the Argentine study above, when the researchers tried an experiment in which they put two plates of corns on a table and had a man react to each plate, dogs didn't preferentially approach the tastier plate afterward. You could say dogs watch for the interaction between two people, not just how a person reacts. Yet a previous study found dogs will choose boxes that people reacted to happily, but not boxes people reacted to with a disgusted face.Well, either way, you can be sure Fluffs is keeping an eye on you, to the best of her ability. The study was published in the journal PLOS One.41. What does the study mentioned in Paragraph l show?A. Dogs prefer yummier foods.B. Dogs like to copy human's behavior.C. Dogs can interact with humans easily.D. Dogs can read human actions and feelings.42. What does the underlined word "gross" probably mean?A. Disgusting.B. Healthy.C. Yummy.D. Hot.43. Which is one of the procedures of the Argentine study?A. One of the women didn't give the food to the man.B. The man had different reactions to the food received.C. The assistant accompanied the dogs to get the food.D. Many dogs went to one of the women.44. What can be concluded from Paragraph 4?A. Interactions between two people confuse dogs.B. Dogs never understand the reaction of one person.C. Dogs have good interactions with one another.D. The findings of some studies are controversial.45. Which is the best title for the passage?A. Man's Best Friend.B. Be Kind To Your DogC. Dog's Amazing AbilityD. Dogs Are Observing You第二节信息匹配(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下列应用文及相关信息,并按照要求匹配信息。

Better known as "Ms. Stephanie" online, Walsh has been featured on social media accounts with some videos drawing more than II million people to watch.Walsh believes the videos gained popularity because she is 75. "Walsh dances for fun and fitness, but also for therapy(心理治疗). She struggled through countless hardships, and she has more than enough reasons to keep her down. But they don't. She turns to her faith, her friends and of course, dance, to shine as an inspiration to those around her.Gilbert, one of Walsh's followers, says she inspires him every day. "She's a beautiful soul who teaches me that it doesn't matter about your age or your size. As long as you feel good, that's all that matters, "says Gilbert. Forever Young in Dance: An Inspiring FigureC. Embracing Social Media: The Key to SuccessD. Dancing with the Young: An Amazing JourneyCA China plane struck a bird after taking off in Chengdu, Sichuan, and had to immediately return to the airport last October, and it wasn't the first accident between an aircraft and a bird last year.In fact, more than 20, 000 wildlife strikes with aircraft were reported worldwide in 2023-the vast majority of those animals being birds. The strikes can also include run-ins with bats or creatures on the ground, such as deer or turtles. Expanding wildlife populations, increases in number of aircraft movements, and a trend toward faster and quieter aireraft all have contributed to the increase in wildlife strikes.Bird strikes are a hazard not just to commercial airplanes, but to all sorts of aircraft. However, historical data shows that damage is reported in a small percentage of incidents. Last year, 95% of the global strikes involved some kind of damage- and only 5% of those caused "substantial" damage. Some of the most disturbing types of strikes can happen when one or more birds go into a plane's engine, which might cause a lot of damage to the aircraft. The pilot would need to return to the airport or find a safe place to land.In last October's China plane incident, the Beijing-bound flight was able to land normally in Chengdu after taking into account what the airline described as security concerns. Senior captain Chen Jianguo said pilots are trained on how to respond if they have a bird strike in flight. The pilot in this case did exactly what he was trained to do."There are lots of things that are being used by airports to try to manage the habitat and birds around the airport, "said Chen Jianguo. Airports need to manage bird habitats to reduce or get rid of trees and plants that shelter birds, or address wetlands that can attract birds. Collecting data on what kinds of birds are involved in strikes is equally important so the risks can better be managed. Many airports also use audible signals to scare birds away, such as the sounds of fireworks.28. What is a cause of the increase in wildlife strikes?A. The poorly designed aircraft.B. The growing number of birds.C. The destruction of wildlife habitats.D. The absence of environmental awareness.29. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 3 probably mean?A. Danger.B. Delay.C. Accident.D. Reminder.30. What does the historical data tell us about bird strikes?A. They are a rare occurrence.B. They usually damage engines.C. Most of them cause slight damage.D. Most of them involve one single bird.31. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?A. Ways to study bird behavior.B. Measures to drive birds away.C. Efforts to restore bird habitat.D. Attempts to take care of birds.DSuppose you come across two doctors. One is handsome while the other looks plain. Who would you trust with your surgery? Most people would probably want to get treated by the handsome one. And most people are likely to be wrong about that. When you look at the sun, you sometimes see it clearly. But sometimes you'll see it shining way bigger than its actual shape. That circle of light called a halo makes it look bigger. This effect, known as the halo effect, also happens when a person, product, or company shines like the sun. Then we don't see them clearly and associate all sorts of unrelated qualities to them. The halo effect was once studied by the psychologist Edward Thorndike, who asked flight commanders to evaluate their pilots in various distinct aspects such as physical appearance, intelligence, and leadership. He found that the pilots who got high scores for their physical appearance, also got rated high on intelligence and leadership skills-a link that seemed wrong. It appears that the commanders were unable to evaluate specific qualities independently of others. They thought of their pilots in broad terms, either "good" or "bad", and allowed this general feeling to influence the specific qualities they credited to their pilots. Some pilots profited from their halo. The halo effect also explains why some teachers give better-looking students higher grades. One study looked at the grades of 4, 500 pupils, who were sorted by volunteers into three groups: below- average, average, and above-average looking. The researchers then compared students' grades between classes taken in conventional classrooms with those taken online where there was no face-to-face interaction. The researchers found that students who were rated as good-looking earned significantly lower grades in online courses compared to conventional classrooms.Since the physical appearance of good-looking people seems to naturally make them also appear intelligent, strong, and trustworthy, here is one good rule. If you meet with an accident and have to choose between two equally qualified doctors, ignore their halo and choose the less handsome one. He might have worked twice as hard to gain the same reputation and is likely better at his job.32. What is the purpose of the second paragraph?A. To explore a natural wonder.B. To spread scientific knowledge.C. To explain a psychological tendency.D. To interpret social rules at the workplace.33. How did the commanders tend to evaluate their pilots in Thorndike's study?A. In a general way.B. With common sense.C. From a specific aspect.D. By an objective criterion.34. What does the 4500-pupil study find about better-looking students?A. They were fairly treated by their teachers.B. They were less attentive in online courses.C. They probably had natural learning abilities.D. They were overvalued in conventional classes.35. What can be learned about the halo effect?A. It relieves appearance anxiety.B. It leads to inaccurate judgments.C. It causes trust crisis among people.D. It intensifies workplace competition.第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分, 满分12. 5分)阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Paragraph 1:
Finally John started his long walk.He walked nonstop and soon he was deep in the forest. Apart from the creepy cry from owls and the rustling of trees, the wood was in a deathly silence. Unconsciously, he quickened up and held onto the battightly. Abruptly,a terrible howl, from what sounded like a wolf, broke the silence and startled him. He jumped up and ran as fast as his legs could carry him. He didn’t stop running until he saw a flash of light at a distance, moving quickly towards him.

Based in Yiwu City. the world’s largest trading center for daily consumer goods in East China’s Zhejiang Province, the 22-year-old said he is likely the first foreigner to get into livestream selling in Yiwu and take advantage of China’s skyrocketing e-commerce industry.Sami has been selling his toys on his Douyin account since last June. Most of hisvideos are about his products or show him han ging around Yiwu’s markets and cracking jokes. For a video he published last October, he invited dozens of foreigners from various countries to express their love for China, which got nearly 30, 000 likes. As a young Chinese-speaking foreigner, Sami attrac ts much attention on China’s social media. He now has only about 28, 000 followers on Douyin but his goal is to have 10 million followers within two years. The COVID-19 pandemic is severely hitting the economy of many countries and has caused great losses among Yiwu’s producers and suppliers. Sami decided to try livestreaming and look for more Chinese domestic buyers via Douyin. As an owner of a Yiwu-based toy company, Sami used to have half of his orders from overseas. He makes efforts to attract more Chinese buyers27. What is the function of the last paragraph?A. To provide background informationB. To summarize the previous paragraphs.C. To introduce a new topic for discussionD. To call on people to use more livestreamCEducational programs often use fear-based messaging and films of crash scenes to reduce risky driving behavior among young people. But does this “scary” approach work?A new study suggests that fear-based messaging fails to reduce risky driving behavior while fear-based Virtual Reality (VR) films showing a violent collision may actually lead young drivers to take more chances behind the wheel.A team of psychologists in Belgium conducted a study of 146 students who had been legally driving for less than five years. The researchers examined the impact of both content (fear vs positive) and delivery mode (2D vs. VR) of driver safety intervention programs.By showing a serious consequence such as death, fear-based driver education films attempt to arouse a sense of fear and persuade young people to drive more carefully. Positively framed films take the opposite approach, using humor and modeling safe driving behaviors that result in positive consequences.Three tests were used to analyze the risk-taking behavior of the young drivers before and after participating in the intervention program. One was a questionnaire. Another was a test on traffic, which asks participants to watch video clips of driving situations and choose whether they view a situation as too risky. for example, choosing whether to pass another car in icy conditions. A third test was used to measure the level of emotional arousal ( such as feeling afraid)after watching a film. The results showed that participants who viewed the fear-based VR film reported riskier driving behaviors afterward, while those who viewed a positively framed VR film exhibited the greatest reduction in risky driving behavior. This finding supports other research that has shown that exposing participants to an extreme collision tends to activate defensive mechanisms, such as paying attention for a shorter time, disengaging. rejecting a message, and an increase in risky behaviors.“Fear appe als have been used in many health and environmental campaigns, such as smoking and anti-drug,” says Dr. Cutello of the research team. “Further experim ental research is needed to determine whether the use of fear is effective.”28. What is the new study about?A. VR’S application on driving education.B. Young drivers’ risky driving behaviors.C. The deadly consequence of violent crashes.D. The effect o f drivers’ educational programs29. Why were participants asked to watch video clips in the second test?A. To assess driving emotions.B. To judge driving behaviors.C. To gain driving competence.D. To keep safe driving in mind30. Which was the result of the fear-based VR film in the study?A. Drivers show fewer risky behaviors.B. Drivers were less able to focus long.C. Drivers were unwilling to cooperate.D. Drivers became more open to advice31. What does Dr. Cutello’s words suggest?A. More research should be conduct.B. Fear-based education shouldn’t be used.C. The result of his research is unconvincing.D. The use of fear education has been cut down.More than half the world’s population l ive in cities, and by 2050 the UN expects that proportion to reach 68%. This means more homes, roads and other infrastructure. In India alone, a city the size of Chicago will have to be developed every year to meet demand for housing. Such a construction increase is a bad sign for dealing with climate change, because making steel and concrete, two of the most common building materials, generates around 8% of the worl d’s CO2 emissions(排放). If cities are to expand and become greener at the same time, they will have to be made from something else.Wood is one of the most promising sustainable(可持续的)alternatives to steel and concrete. It is not, however, everyday wood that is attracting the interest ofarchitects. Rather, it is a material called engineered timber. This is a combination of different layers each designed to meet the requirements of specific parts such as floors, panels and beams(横梁). Designers can use it to provide levels of strength like steel, in a product that is up to 80% lighter. In addition, engineered timber is usually made into large sections in a factory for future use, which reduces the number of deliveries to a construction site.According to Michael Ramage of the University of Cambridge, a wooden building produces 75% less CO2than a steel and concrete one of the same size. However, if building with wood takes off, it does raise concern about there being enough trees to go round. But with sustainably managed forests that should not be a problem, says Dr Ramage. A family-sized apartment requires about 30 cubic metres of timber, and he estimates Europe’s sustainable forests alone grow that amount every seven seconds. Nor is fire a risk, for engineered timber does not bum easily. Besides, fireproofing layers can be added to the timber. All in all, then, it looks as if wood as a building material may get a new lease of life.32. Why is India mentioned in paragraph 1?A. To point out the severe pollution.B. To predict the population increase.C. To indicate the high degree of urbanization.D. To show the great need for building materials.33. What can be learned about engineered timber?A. It is produced at a low cost.B. It hardly appeals to architects.C. It helps save energy in transportation.D. It possesses greater strength than steel.34. What does the underlined phrase “takes off” in the last paragraph mean?A Becomes cheaper.B Gains popularity.C Requires less work. D. Proves sustainable.35. What can be a suitable title for the text?A Making Future Cities More AttractiveB. Living in a World with Less EmissionC. Building Sustainable Cities with WoodsD. The good news? Volunteering can be a great way to settle into a new community, meet people, and learn valuable skills.Kajal Patil moved to the United States from India in February 2017. Having previously volunteered for two years as an assistant yoga teacher in her home country, Kajal was enthusiastic about volunteering and began looking for volunteer opportunities that match her interests. She was drawn to a volunteer opportunity to review applications on behalf of the Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI), which aims to help Latin American and Caribbean business to bring positive changes to their societies and contribute more fully to economic development, prosperity and security in those places. After connecting with the opportunity and successfully completing the application process, Kajal got to work. Her role involved reviewing 44 in-depth applications from potential candidates across Latin America and the Caribbean for a four-week fellowship in the U.S.. She was responsible for describing the business ideas presented by these candidates, assessing the social impact of their businesses, and determining the strength of candidates to carry out their plans. With almost 4,000 applicants in 2017, volunteers like Kajal were important members of the YLAI team.Kajal says that this volunteer opportunity super-charged her existing skills, while helping her build new ones such as time management, business analysis, decision-making, planning, and presenting. She is now looking for her next volunteer opportunity and reflects positively on her experience with YLAI. “A new country brings in a lot of new experiences and volunteering helped me to settle into a new environment,” adds Kajal. “By helping others, I felt needed in society. It promoted my confidence, and other people benefited too. Volunteering is a great opportunity to improve yourself, others, and the whole society.”Whether you recently moved to a new place or are looking to expand your influence on your current community, find a volunteer opportunity to empower yourself, and others.4.What do we know about Kajal?A.She is an experienced volunteer.B.She received education in the U.S..C.She founded a volunteer organization.D.She worked as a professional yoga teacher.5.What was included in Kajal’s voluntary work for YLAI?A.Carrying out the selected business plans.B.Assessing the applications of candidates.C.Helping candidates think up business ideas.D.Simplifying candidates’ application process.6.What does Kajal think of volunteering?A.It contributes to local economy.B.It focuses on skills development.C.It helps develop people’s interests.D.It benefits individuals and society.7.What is the purpose of this text?A.To share experience of volunteering.B.To recognize the contribution of YLAI.C.To suggest a way to settle into a new place.D.To evaluate the benefits of volunteering abroad.CFor most business speakers, the necessary stage time, structure, and conscious editing to bring about maximum effect just aren’t there – most people don’t have to speak often enough to get it. Conversely, the speakers who deliver their talk most tend to be the best and most polished. They know where the laugh lines are, they know what phrasing works best, and they know their timing. Just like standup comedians.Standup comedy, at its basic principles, is a combination of material (what you say) and delivery (how you say it). It is no different than typical speeches or presentations. TV slots (节目时间) for new comedians tend to be under five minutes, which forces them to continuously refine and refine again in order to achieve maximum effect from each word.Conference organizers still tend to book speakers in 40-60 minute time slots but who, these days, has an hour to focus on one person? Some of the best speeches in history have clocked in at less than 20 minutes. Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address was 272 words and lasted two minutes. Winston Churchill’s “Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat” speech was 688 words. The most powerful emotional expression two humans can say to each other is just three words: “I,” “love,” and “care.”Most people switch off at around the ten-minute mark. As mentioned in Brain Rules, studies by noted educator Wilbert McKeachie demonstrate that “typically, attention increases from the beginning of the lecture to ten minutes into the lecture and decreases after that point.” This is why the organization for online talk TED has shortened its earlier 18-minute format. They figured out that brevity is levity. However, many conference and event producers haven’t got it right. Most speakers can’t hold the attention of an audience for 40-60 minutes. It’s something even the best standup comedians battle with. Yet business speakers seldom ask for a shorter slot. They should.8.What pushes new standup comedians to improve their presentations?A.The limited given time.B.The topic of their speeches.C.The audience’s expectation.D.The place of their performance.9.Why does the author mention the best speeches in history in Paragraph 3?A.To expand the influence of the two speeches.B.To prove that powerful speeches can be brief.C.To illustrate the power of emotional expressions.D.To show how famous people shortened speeches.10.Why did TED reset a time limit?A.The organizers can’t book long TV slots.B.The audience cannot focus for a long time.C.The access to online speeches was limited.D.The speakers tend to deliver short speeches.11.What are business speakers advised to do?A.To cut down their speech time.B.To interact more with the audience.C.To pay more attention to the contents.D.To battle against the standup comedians.DSocial distancing is not a new concept in the natural world, where infectious diseases are commonplace. Through specialized senses animals can detect certain diseases and change their behavior to avoid getting ill.In 1966, while studying chimps (猩猩) in a Tanzanian national park, zoologist Jane Goodall observed a chimp named McGregor who had caught a highly infectious virus. His fellow chimps attacked him and threw him out of the troop. In one instance, McGregor approached chimps in a tree. He reached out a hand in greeting, but the others moved away without a backward glance.“For a full two minutes, old McGregor sat motionless, staring after them,” Goodall notes in her 1971 book In the Shadow of Man. “It’s really not that different to how some societies react today to such a tragedy.”Not all animals are so aggressive toward their ailing neighbors. Sometimes it’s as simple as avoiding those who may infect you. When Kiesecker, a lead scientist in America, studied American bullfrog in the late 1990s, he found that bullfrogs could not only detect a deadly smell of infection in other bullfrogs, but healthy members actively avoided those that were sick. Bullfrogs rely on chemicals signals to determine who is sick or not.Caribbean lobsters also shun diseased members of their community, well before they become infectious. It takes about eight weeks for lobsters infected with the deadly virus Panulirus argus mininuceovirus to become dangerous to others. Normally social animals, lobsters begin keeping away from the diseased as early as four weeks after infection – once the lobsters can smell certain chemicals released by sick individuals.Overall, it’s important to note that, unlike us, animals don’t realize if they stay home, they might actually reduce the infection rate,” Kiesecker explains. “As humans, we have that ability. It’s a big difference.”12.What can we learn about the chimps from Goodall’s observation?A.They kept a distance from one another.B.They became aggressive when infected.C.The infected avoided contact with others.D.The infected were forced to leave the group.13.What does the underlined word “shun” in Paragraph 6 probably mean?A.Avoid.B. Cure.C. Get rid of.D. Get along with.14.How are humans different from animals according to Kiesecker?A.Humans are more sensitive to virus.B.Humans are less likely to get infected.C.Humans treat infectious diseases in a wiser way.D.Humans can detect chemical signals more quickly.15.Which might be the best title for the text?A.Help Me OutB.Leave Me AloneC.Stay Away From UsD.Stay Home Stay Healthy第二节(共5 小题;每小题 2.5 分, 满分12.5 分)阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

In fact, she was carrying a painting of a plant she'd done when she arrived at her doctor's San Francisco office. "It would be great if we had artwork like that for our chemotherapy (化疗) rooms," the nurse said. Ballard asked to see one.She was shocked by what she found. The walls were dull and bare, and the paint was chipping(剥落). It was a depressing room for a depressing routine - patients restricted to chemo drips for perhaps several hours, often with nothing to look at other than those sad walls. Ballard didn't have cancer herself, but she could sympathize with the patients. "I couldn't imagine how anyone could even think about getting healthy in a room like that," she says. As it happens, Ballard's physician, Stephen Hufford, was ill with cancer himself, so finding time to decorate the rooms was low on his to-do list. So Ballard made it her mission to brighten up the place. She started by e-mailing 20 local designers. "I wrote, 'You don't know me. But my heart hurts after seeing these rooms," she remembers. She then asked whether they would donate their time and money to transform just one of Dr. Hufford's rooms each.As it happened, six of them wrote back almost immediately. Six rooms got new paint, light fixtures, artwork, and furniture. Dr. Hufford was delighted. "All the patients feel relieved of the pain because of it," he said. He even noted that his own tone of voice was different in the rooms and that he was better able to connect with his patients.Ballard was so encouraged by the patients' reactions that she created a nonprofit, Rooms That Rock 4 Chemo, to raise money and decorate more spaces. Since then, she has worked on 20 projects, including one in Pennsylvania. "We were in Philadelphia for a ribbon cutting, and a woman was there on her third battle with cancer," says Ballard. "When she saw what we'd done, she said, 'I'm gonna beat it this time. I thought I wasn't going to, but now I know I'm gonna beat it"28. What made Ballard decide to help decorate the chemotherapy rooms?A. Her sympathy for cancer patients.B. Her passion for room decoration.C. The good relationship with Hufford.D. The request of a nurse in San Francisco.29. What outcome does Ballard's effort bring about?A. More hospitals will be built,B. Hufford cured more patients.C. The cancer patients were feeling better.D. Hufford's chemotherapy rooms got good fame.30. Which words best describe Nancy Ballard?A. Loving and devoted.B. Talented and energetic.C. Rich and generous.D. Ambitious and creative.31. Which can be a suitable title for the passage?A. Design for HopeB. Battle against CancerC. Donation for PatientsD. Decoration in HospitalDPlants are boring. They just sit there photosynthesizing (光合作用)while animals have all the fun. Right? Not so much. A new study has found that there is a long history of interactions between ants and plants. The ant and plant co-evolution (协同进化)started with ants feeding on plants andplants evolving ant-friendly features.Plants make a number of different structures that are specific for ant use. Some plants have evolved features that persuade ants into defending them from attack from other insects and even mаmmаlѕ. Тhеѕе іnсludе hollow thorns that аntѕ will live іnѕіdе, or ехtra nесtаr (琼浆) оn lеаvеѕ or stems for the ants to eat. Some ants will just cheat and take the nectar and run, but some will stick around and attack anything that tries to hurt the plant. Other plants get ants to help them move their seeds around, by providing them with rich food packets attached to the seeds. The ant will pick up the seed and carry it away, eat the food packet, and leave the seed - often in a nutrient-rich area where it'll grow better, and since it's farther away from its parent, they won't have to compete for resources. But scientists weren't sure how the evolutionary relationship between ants and plants got started. If evolution is an arms race between species developing ways to make use of their neighbors, then scientists wanted to know whether plants or ants fired the first shot. It was a chicken-and-egg question, whether things started with ants developing behaviors to take advantage of plants, or plants evolving structures to take advantage of ants. The history of ants and plants evolving together goes back to the time of the dinosaurs, and it's not easy to tell from fossils who fired the first shot. However, it is a question of little significance. Scientists say their study maters because it provides a look at how these widespread and complex interactions evolved.32. Some plants attach food packets to their seeds in order to .A. reward the antsB. make a fool of antsC. provide nutrition for the seedsD. get the seeds moved around33. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us?A. How plants and ants interact.B. What ants do to protect plants.C. How plants and ants survive attacks.D. AThe Worlds’ Best BookshopsThere’s nothing like being surrounded by books, wherever you are. Here are the finest oasesof literature that travellers can bring you.Daikanyama T-site | TokyoIt is well worth visiting even if just to admire the building’s beautiful, crisscrossed architecture. Once you’ve had your fill of roaming three floors’ worth of bookshelves, there’s the bar, the coffee shop, or even the video rental space to give you more reason to stay just that little bit longer. Grab a book, order a beer and dive into its pages. I could have stayed hours here.City Lights | San FranciscoThe three-storey establishment publishes and sells titles in poetry, fiction, translation, politics, history and the arts. It hosts events and readings, and runs a non-profit of the same name that aimsto promote diversity of voices and ideas in literature. It’s opposite Vesuvio, a bar frequented by Kerouac and other Beat-generation writers and artists.Shakespeare and Company | ParisI made a special trip to the Left Bank for this one when I was in Paris. It has two floors packed with English-language texts, and I was particularly struck by any spare wall space devoted to notes from visitors – heartfelt messages to a loved one, dedications to the shop itself, or a quote from a favourite author or philosopher.Hutatma Chowk | MumbaiA few years ago I visited India, investigating Rudyard Kipling’s connections with the country.I spotted a cheap copy of The Jungle Book on one of the tarp-covered book stalls at Hutatma Chowk (Martyrs’ Square). The booksellers here are like amateur librarians, able to lay their hands on almost any title you ask for. To me, those well-thumbed (翻旧了的) books spoke volumes about the changes of Mumbai’s readers in the 150 years since the city gave us Kipling.21.In which bookshop can you buy a drink while visiting?A. Hutatma Chowk22.What can be learned about the book stalls at Hutatma Chowk?A.People can meet Rudyard Kipling there.B.They sell the cheapest books in the world.C.The book owners are amateur librarians.D.The sellers are familiar with the books.23.What do the four bookstores have in common?A.They are beautifully designed.B.They are three-storey buildings.C.They offer book lovers good experience.D.They are frequently visited by great writers.BHoward Weistling wanted to be a comic strip (连环漫画) artist. But when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, he joined the Army. After flight engineer training, Howard was shipped off to Europe. On his maiden flight, his plane was shot down over Austria. The entire crew of eight men landed safely. But a farmer found Howard hiding in his barn and turned him over to a prison of war camp in Barth, Germany. It was freezing and the men almost starved to death eating the guards’ garbage.Hungry and homesick Howard coped the only way he knew how. He drew a comic strip. The book, made of cigarette wrappers bound together with scrap metal, was sent around the camp. Every couple of days he would add a new panel. One panel at a time would be passed around the whole camp. And they’d have something to look forwa rd to.After an entire year of this, they woke one morning to find their guards gone. They fled and Howard finally got to go home. Just lucky to get out alive, he left the book behind.Back home in California, Howard soon had a wife and kids to feed so he had to set aside his dream of becoming an artist. He took a job as a gardener instead.Morgan shared his father’s artistic gifts. At 15 his parents sent him to art school. And Howard got to see his son become a well-known painter before he died in 2002. That’s how, seven decades after the war, when a stranger in New York googled the name “Weistling,” he found Morgan online.“I get an email from a gentleman and he says, ‘I think I may have some drawings your father did when he was a POW (prisoner of war) in World War II,’” Morgan recalls. “‘Would you like them?’ And I just stared at that email and started crying.”Luckily Howard had engraved his name on the comic book, which is how the man from New York City had connected with Morgan. A couple of days later when it arrived in California, Morgan couldn’t believe it. “It was like getting my father back,” Morgan says. “It was like him being able to tell me the story over again — only this time it was real in my hands.”24.The passage details Ho ward’s life as a POW to show that .A.war cannot stop his pursuit of successB.passion for art helped ease his sufferingsC.loss of freedom encouraged his creativityD.misery drives him to fight against his fate25.What can we infer about Howard’s comic strip in prison?A.It satisfied prisoners’ curiosity.B.It aroused the guards’ sympathy.C.It was popular among the prisoners.D.It raised prisoners’ confidence in freedom.26.What contributes to the stranger’s success in finding Morgan?A.The email from a gentleman.B.Howard’s e xperience in the war.C.Morgan’s recalling of his father.D.Morgan’s status in the field of art.27.What can we infer about Morgan from the last paragraph?A.He didn’t believe the stranger’s story.B.He was excited to get the comic strip.C.He couldn’t wait to tell others his good news.D.He hadn’t heard about his father’s war stories.CYour brain isn’t necessarily the same age as the rest of you. Now, it may be possible to predict how quickly a person’s brain will age throughout life based on tests taken when he or she is three years old.A person’s biological age may be a better indicator of their health than their real age. Brain age can be measured using brain scans and machine-learning to determine if a person’s brain looks older or younger than the average healthy brain for people of the same age.To find out if brain age might reveal anything about a person’s health in midlife, Max Elliott at Duke University in North Carolina and his colleagues assessed the brains of 869 adults in New Zealand who have undergone regular medical and cognitive (认知的) testing since they were 3 years old. When the volunteers, all aged between 43 and 46, underwent MRI brain scans, the team found that their brain ages ranged from 23 to 71. Those with older brain ages performed worse on tests of cognition, memory and IQ. The researchers also found that some people have a very advanced brain age but their bodies seem to be ageing slowly, and vice versa (反之亦然). However, the team found that those who had the highest scores on cognitive tests when they were 3 years old went on to have the youngest-looking brains. This suggests we might be able to tell who is at risk of accelerated brain ageing early in life. Researchers hope that predicting brain ageing earlier in life could allow treatments for conditions like dementia ( 痴呆) to be started sooner. This means treatments might have a better chance of working. We don’t yet have a way to treat brain ageing, but given the known benefits to the brain of healthy eating and e xercise, these aren’t a bad place to start.28.What helps predict the speed of one’s brain ageing?A.One’s health condition.B.A test result at the age of 3.C.The actual age of one’s brain.D.A machine for medical check.29.What is the purpose of Elliott’s research?A.To find out why people look older or younger.B.To measure people’s brain age at different stages.C.To discover whether brain age can be measured by machines.D.To explore the relationship between brain age and future health.30.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?A.The influence of cognitive tests.B.The procedure of Elliott’s study.C.The information about volunteers.D.The findings of the brain research.31.What do the findings of the research imply?A.We should test our brain age earliest possible.B.People suffering dementia can go on working.C.Brain ageing could be predicted at an early age.D.Healthy eating and exercise can cure brain ageing.DOne of the most popular beliefs in parenting is the so-called Mozart effect, which says that listening to music by the Austrian composer Wolfgang Mozart can increase a child’s intelligence. Some pregnant women have even gone so far as to play Mozart recordings on headphones pressed against their bellies. And it’s not hard to see how Mozart’s name became associated with accelerated development. He was history’s greatest child genius, performing astonishing music for kings and queens at an age when many of us were content with tuneless singing “I’m a Little Teapot”.So, if you have kids or you’re expecting to have them, how seriously should you take the Mozart effect? Will the child who doesn’t listen to Mozart in the cradle ( 摇篮) be limited to an ordinary life? Are you a bad parent if your kids don’t know about any works of Mozart?Relax. There is no scientific evidence that listening to Mozart improves children’s cognitive abilities. The whole idea comes from a small study done in 1993, which found that college students who listened to Mozart’s Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major (K 448) showed some improvement in a test of spatial (空间的) skills. This finding was later described as something extremely amazing by a musician, Don Campbell, in a book. Campbell’s claims about the super powers of Mozart’s music were repeated endlessly in the media and fueled a craze for Mozart-based enrichment activities. In 1998, for example, the governor of Georgia in the USA requested funds to send classical-music CDs to all parents of newborns in the state.Since then, scientists have examined the claim that Mozart increases intelligence and found no evidence for it. The original experiment with college students was reviewed in 1999, and the increase in the students’ spatial skills was found to be negligible. In 2007 the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research asked a team of experts to examine the scientific literature regarding Mozart and child development, and they found no reason to believe that it increased intelligence.32.People relate Mozart to children’s intelligence develop ment because he .A. owned extraordinary music talentB. could perform music as a childC. offered music to pregnant womenD. was an royal Austrian composer33.What can we know about the small study in 1993?A.It added to the popularity of Mozart’s music.B.It found no evidence for supporting Mozart effect.C.It helped college students make academic progress.D.It urged Georgia’s governor to spread classical music.34.What does the underlined word “negligible” probably mean?A. Sudden.B. Insignificant.C. Average.D. Steady.35.What can be the best title for the text?A.New Findings: Mozart Effect to Be ProvedB.Secrets Uncovered: History of Mozart EffectC.Does Listening to Mozart Make Kids Smarter?D.How Does Mozart Improve Kids’ Intelligence?第二节(共5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Since then, her English language learners have shown a 40 percent increase in their reading.Ms. Thorpe spent a lot of time encouraging her pupils to apply for college and helped them with their applications and accessing fully-funded scholarships. She helped her senior pupils in 2018–2019 win more than $6.7 million in scholarships to 11 colleges, with most of them not having to pay for their education. She plans to use the prize money to give less well-off pupils an opportunity of receiving a third level education. “Every person deserves the right to education and I want to be that person who champions that for them. As more governments push for urgent action on climate change, quite a few companies are betting their future – that millions of consumers are finally ready for electricity-powered vehicles. Modern battery-powered cars are selling fast and zero- emission ( 排放) planes are coming. These changes, both leading to a more sustainable future, are reinventing how we get from here to there.Cars and trucks are undergoing their greatest improvement since the automobile’s (汽车) existence more than a century ago. Almost overnight, the era of the electric car has arrived. Electricity has the advantage that it works without smell and with less noise. Global annual sales of electric vehicles are expected to soar from just over 3 million today to 14 million by 2025. Just a month after Ford unveiled an electric version of the popular F-150, customers had reserved more than 100,000 of them. The price is about $10,000 above the gas-powered one, but Ford says the electric model will cost much less to maintain. Everything creating a green revolution on the ground is of limited help in the sky for the time being.High-storage batteries are useless at present when it comes to the technological challenge of launching a few hundred people into the sky and carrying them thousands of miles. No battery yet invented can power, say, a Boeing 747 from New York to London.Promising improvements, however, do add up. Developments with zero-emission,battery-powered electric engines are already happening in commercial flight, involving trips of limited duration and distance. Airlines specializing in short journeys with small planes will lead the way to electric flight. Our planet’s health depends on zeroing out carbon dioxide emissions by 2050, and yet, by the timetable needed to address the climate challenge, the shift away from gas-powered vehicles remains far too slow. Nevertheless, the train has left the station. Someday,electric-powered transportation will be as common as air.8.Why are many companies switching to electricity-powered vehicles?A.To reinvent the way we travel.B.To cut the costs of car production.C.To improve the quality of products.D.To pursue sustainable development.9.What do we know about the electric car?A.It came into use a century ago.B.It enjoys increasing popularity.C.It sells better than the traditional one.D.It costs less than the gas-powered one.10.What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 3?A.To show the disadvantages of battery power.B.To emphasize the significance of short flights.C.To stress the future prospects of electric planes.D.To state the developments of commercial flight.11.What does the author mean by saying “the train has left the station”?A.Train transportation has improved.B.Green transportation is on its way.C.The electric train is running regularly.D.The gas-powered train has become the past.Children may learn new words better when they learn them in the context of other words they are just learning—according to a new research from the University of East Anglia.Researchers investigated how 18–24-month-olds learn new words—in the context ofwords they already know well and those they don’t. The findings help explain how children learn new words and suggest a new way that parents and carers could help boost language development.Previous research suggests that when children hear a word they do not know and see an object they have never seen in the context of some objects that they can already name, such as a toy or a ball, they guess that the new word refers to the new thing.Dr. Larissa Samuelson from the university wanted to know if the strength of a child’s knowledge of familiar things—how well they know what “cars” or “balls” are, for example—mattered for learning new words and remembering them. They asked 82 children to take part in the study and carry out two experiments among them. And then they got some really surprising findings.“We had expected that a stronger knowledge of familiar words would be better for learning new words, but we found the opposite was true.” Dr Samuelson said. “This new study suggests another way we might be able to help boost children’s ability to remember new word-object links – by teaching them in the context of other things that they are just learning.”It seems counterintuitive, but it is perhaps because the less well-known items don’t compete with the new words as much. If they learn new words in the context of playing with well-known items such as a ball or book, they don’t process the new word as much. 12.What is the purpose of the new research?A.To challenge the findings of previous studies.B.To observe the process of children’s learning.C.To better understand children’s word learning.D.To compare children’s different learning styles.13.What can be inferred from Dr. Samuelson’s words?A.Their findings are out of expectation.B.Their research should focus on children. C.We should be more patient with children.D.We need to provide guidance on learning. 14.What does the underlined word “counterintuitive” mean in the last paragraph? A.Consistent.B.Encouraging.C.Impractical.D.Unreasonable. 15.What does the text mainly tell us?A.Less familiar words help children learn better.B.Word-object links contribute to better learning.C.New research finds the secrets of raising children.D.Children learn better with the help of their parents.二、七选五Apple’s vitamin and mineral content, its easy availability, and its inexpensiveness are the reasons why it’s the second most-consumed fruit in the world.___16___ But what about the calories and nutritional value in it? Can we consume apples in endless numbers and still stay fit?A medium-sized apple contains up to 95 calories. However, the sugar content—about19g—is still less than the 21g you get in a regular-sized chocolate bar.___17___ The fiber present in fruits and vegetables helps control blood sugar levels naturally. It slows down digestion and stops the blood sugar levels from rising as they would after you consume candy.Eating one medium-sized apple gives you your daily dose of 14% vitamin A and 11% of vitamin C, both that your immune system needs the most. Antioxidants like vitamin A and C save the body from damage caused by unstable atoms. _______18_______If we consume darker apples more, we can get an antioxidant that protects the body from diseases and a good amount of indigestible fiber our gut’s good bacteria feed on, so it’s a win-win deal!_____19_____ Consuming one or two apples on a daily basis is good for your health. But if you’re diabetic, you should restrict the consumption to not more than a small-sized apple a day as apples are a high-sugar fruit. If you stay alert and take a proper diet, your body will benefit a lot. But if you eat endlessly, even the healthiest food in the world would damage your body and increase the number of doctor visits._____20_____A.So act smartly and stay safe.B.How many apples can you eat in a day?C.Therefore, you should watch out for the food quality.D.How can we guarantee that we will get this fruit continuously?E.Plus, this sugar is less harmful to your body since it comes with fibers.F.They reduce the risks of illness and aging, giving you healthy and smooth skin. G.Since it comes in many varieties and different tastes, people never get bored of it.三、完形填空Many people, whose lives are filled with one fortunate event after another, don’t understand how the other half, the_21_ half lives.
