AThe blues was born in the Mississippi Delta (三角洲) area sometime in the late 1800s. The music is rooted in African American slave spiritual and work songs.Life was hard for black people in the US. Slavery technically had ended, but poverty and unjust laws kept people from full freedom. Some former slaves stayed in the South and continued to work on farms, often for their former owners. Much of the work was outside in the fields, in the unforgiving heat of the Mississippi sun.Roger Stolle is a Mississippi blues historian. He says a culture of singing helped people deal with the hardships. People sang spirituals at church and work songs in the fields to make the days go by. Over time, this music developed into what people now call “the blues”.As the blues grew in popularity, musicians began to perform around the Delta. Some, like B.B. King or John Lee Hooker, would travel to the city of Memphis, Tennessee, to establish professional music careers. The blues is both American and foreign. The blues historian Scott Barretta says many elements of the blues—including singing styles, rhythm and instrument playing—are African and were brought to the US by those who had been enslaved. Baretta also notes the patterns to the lyrics. “The blues follows an A, A, B lyrical style ... What we mean by that, is that when you perform the blues, you're often singing a verse, repeating the verse, and then there's an answer line. That's a style of music which we didn't really see before around 1900.”When it comes to the words, many musicians sing about difficulties from their own life stories. Holmes is among them. “I don't sing about lies, I tell the truth! ... True blues, the lyrics are absolutely true. They sing about life experience. He played in the grand Beijing Olympic opening ceremony in 2008, watched by a TV audience of 5 billion.Lang Lang is the first Chinese pianist to play with the world's top orchestras, making his debut at the Carnegie Hall in New York at 18, while still a student.Lang Lang's charm and fondness for sharp clothes make him a natural fit to represent China's new international image. According to the British newspaper the Times, “The Lang Lang's effect” is responsible for driving 36 million Chinese children to learn the piano. Now in China children are learning Chopin and Western orchestras are playing sold-out tours across Chinese cities. But can China introduce its own music to the west? Lang is trying. His cooperation with the London Symphony Orchestras this month includes a performance of Dragon Songs, an album of traditional Chineseclassics.Behind the international recognition, however, is a fascinating story of a gifted child. Lang grew up with his father's own musical ambition and high expectations. It is not hard to imagine how boring it must be to practice the piano every day. Lang said that he once hated his hands and the piano. He injured his right hand six years ago and had to rest. “That was the best month,” he says, without hesitation. “I had a date. I saw a Broadway show and saw Britney Spears in concert.”4.Which of the following is NOT the reason why Lang Lang is the No.1 Chinese classical artist in the world?A.He has as many as 5 billions fans in China.B.He played in the Beijing Olympic opening ceremony.C.He is the first Chinese pianist to play with the world's top orchestras.D.He plays the piano so well and has a good international image.5.The underlined word “debut” in the second paragraph probably means ________.A.first class B.first performanceC.first plan D.first choice6.From the passage we can learn that ________.A.Lang is making efforts to promote Chinese music to the worldB.Lang didn't play the piano well when he was littleC.he was happy to practice the piano every dayD.he injured his right hand carelessly six years ago7.What's the main idea of the last paragraph?A.The sad story of Lang's father.B.Lang's gift from his father.C.Lang's special childhood life.D.Lang's date with his girlfriend.CWhat do you think of 80s pop music? Do the names George Michael, Madonna and Michael Jackson sound familiar?Well, these are just some of the names that were well-known in the music scene P of the 80s and early 90s. The 80s pop musicscene was an important step to the popularity of present day music. A new wave in the music scene was introduced, which made such music styles as punk rock, rap music and the MTV popular. Although it was an end to the old 60s and 70s styles, it was also the beginning of something big. The popularity of music videos meant that artists now replaced their guitar-based music with visual displays. A new wave of artists came on the scene and the entire industry developed quickly. The most famous 80s pop music video is Michael Jackson's Thriller. Introduced in 1982, few people can forget the video not only because of its never before seen images, but also because of the popularity it received. Think too of how 80s pop music changed the lives of people who grew up in the 80s. Ask a young man today to tell you the names of the “New Kids on the Block” and he will start talking about the neighbor kids who just moved in. These are not the answers you might have heard in the 80s. Though today's young men do not recognize how cool 80s pop music was, most people will always remember it for what it was and these are happy memories they will always love. Some of the 80s pop music legends include Madonna, U2, AeroSmith and of course the King of Pop Michael Jackson. Let's not forget Prince, Tina Turner, Phil Collins and Motown's Lionel Ritchie. Some of these musicians played music that has stood the test of time. Undoubtedly, the 80s pop music scene will live on for many more years to come.8.What is the text mainly about?A.The characters of 80s pop music.B.The effects of 80s pop music.C.80s pop music's steps to popularity.D.What made 80s pop music popular.9.80s pop music mainly includes the following styles EXCEPT ________.A.rap music B.the MTVC.guitar-based music D.punk rock10.Michael Jackson's Thriller impressed people so deeply mainly because________.A.it was made into a music videoB.he sang it in a special styleC.it changed the lives of peopleD.it left people with happy memories11.The purpose of the last paragraph is to tell readers that ________.A.80s pop music is now out of dateB.80s pop music has many faultsC.80s pop music is and will remain popularD.we shouldn't forget the great musicians of the 80sDIn all the world's cultures, people sing, play instruments, and celebrate with music. It plays such an important role in our lives that all fields focus on its study, including one looking at the biology of music. Experts find that because of the way our brains process music, learning to play an instrument or just listening to music can have a wide range of benefits.Music education has received a lot of attention. Learning to play an instrument can help children improve math, science, and language skills. One study in Canada tracked children's IQ scores for nine months, discovering that children who studied music had the biggest test score improvements. The secret may lie in the way reading music and playing notes use several areas of the brain, increasing our ability to learn school subjects. For example, reading notes improves spatial (空间的) reasoning skills, which are helpful in solving math problems like fractions (分数).Music is also used for medical purposes, such as the treatment of diseases which affect memories. The secret lies in the way the brain processes music. One area near the forehead, the medial prefrontal cortex, connects music with memories stored in two other areas: the amygdale and hippocampus. That's why an old song can remind you of something that happened years ago. For patients suffering from diseases like Alzheimer's, listening to music can help unlock buried memories by strengthening musical pathways to memories. With the evidence of music's benefits, it's no wonder some countries make music study a part of their education systems. People are recognizing that more than just a form of entertainment, music is also great for the brain.12.According to the Canadian study, which children increased IQ scores?A.Those who already had high IQ scores.B.Those who had always played music.C.Those who could not play any instrument.D.Those who studied music for a period of time.13.Which of the following is a kind of disease?A.Spatial reasoning.B.Alzheimer's.C.The amygdale and hippocampus.D.The medial prefrontal cortex.14.Which can be the best title for the text?A.Music and health B.Music and the mindC.Music and education D.Music and instruments15.Scientists are studying music because ________.A.music can be used for medical treatmentsB.music plays a very important role in our livesC.our brains can process music in different waysD.music education has received a lot of attention第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

extreme heat often makes people sweaty and restless. While people are annoyed by it,experts suggest summer is the best season to discharge (排放) your body's toxins (毒素) and recover your energy. One popular option is hot-stone massage (按摩).Therapists use smooth and heated stones, usually river rocks,to massage certain parts of the body,or place them on key points of the body. The warmth of the hot stones will improve blood circulation and also help relax muscles, while sweating is also believed to be good for discharging the body's toxins.Another popular option is hot-stone baths. The hot-stone bath will help the body discharge toxins and humidity that accumulated during the last winter.Summer is the best season to build a good body.Rather than use water or steam to heat and wash the body, people simply wear a coat or something comfortable, and then lie on heated stone tablets made of hot stones, which are warmed to around 45℃.The body will gradually warm up and blood circulation will also be improved.More sweat will come out quickly. The sweat is smooth and fresh, not smelly like that released after sportsactivities.Such baths bring a number of health benefits, such as anti-aging,improved blood circulation and stress relief. The slimming effect of dieting can even be promoted.Using hot stones for healing dates back to ancient times, but the modern renewal of hot-stone sunstroke.Call for helpCall to get an ambulance as quickly as possible. This should be the first thing you do,especially if the sunstroke person has fainted (昏倒).Also, call for help from anyone nearby if you're in a public place. If there's no one around, call someone nearby if they can get there sooner than an ambulance.Ask everyone to bring you as much water as possible,if there isn't much nearby.Get the person to a cooler areaIf there's a building nearby, aim for that.Anywhere with plenty of air conditioners and water is perfect. If a building isn't available, bring the person to a well-shaded area.Get the water flowingIf the person is still conscious, get him or her to drink water. If there's a bathtub available, fill it with cool water and put the person in it.If your water AOn a dark winter day in Russia in 1896, Sergei Prokofiev sat by a piano next to his mother. She was helping him compose (作曲) his first piece of music. Sergei was only five years old.He had overheard his parents discussing a terrible famine (饥荒) in India. The picture Sergei had of those hungry people in his mind caused him to write a story, in the form of musical notes. Sergei could not read music, so he picked out a tune on the piano keys, and his mother recorded the notes. Sergei titled it “Indian Gallop.”Sergei's mother began giving him piano lessons for 20 minutes a day, and his ability grew quickly. She had a great love for music, too, and Sergei often lay awake in bed at night and listened to her play the piano.Sergei's parents found a famous music teacher for him. The teacher shouted at Sergei when he didn't practice reading and playing music. Sergei later wrote, “I wanted to compose great musical plays, and instead I was given all sorts of boring tasks.” Yet he persisted with his studies and grew up to be a great composer. In 1936 a children's theater asked Sergei to write music that would teach children about different instruments. He was happy and wrote the piece in a week, calling it Peter and the Wolf.Sergei's Peter and the Wolf was enjoyed by children as well as adults. The first time Sergei played the piece on the piano, the children listening to it loved it so much that they made him play the ending three extra times. He was excited.Today Sergei Prokofiev is remembered not only for his contributions (贡献) to classical music, but also for his sense of fun.21. When he was five, Sergei _____.A. could read musicB. experienced a famineC. created his first compositionD. wrote a story about his parents22. What does the underlined part “persisted with” in Paragraph 4 mean?A. Hurried up.B. Put up with.C. Continued with.D. Walked away from.23. The piece of music Peter and the Wolf _____.A. was a great successB. was one of Sergei's early worksC. was written to teach children about the pianoD. was played three extra times when first played24. What's the text mainly about?A. The greatest 20th-century composer.B. Sergei's contributions to music.C. Musical plays in Russia.D. Sergei's musical stories.BInside Out is one of my favorite Disney / Pixar movies. The story is about a young girl named Riley who moves from Minnesota to San Francisco with her family and how she deals with her emotions (情感) through the move. These five emotions in Riley's brain are Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust (厌恶) and Sadness. These emotions play a very important role in her life. I can relate because I am an 11-year-old girl and I am very in touch with my emotions and pre-teen feelings. The film is extremely beautiful and you couldn't ask for better direction from Pete Doctor. The use of the right colors for the characters is great. For example, Joy is yellow, Sadness is blue, Disgust is green, Fear is purple and Anger of course is red. Sadness plays a main role in the story and it makes me wonder why we are told not tobe sad. I think it's important to be sad when the time comes. The end of the movie pretty much got me and the whole audience (观众) (families, couples and even elderly people) in tears and I cried very hard.I recommend (推荐) this movie for anyone from 8 to 18 because it has enough joy in it for younger kids to like it even though it does have some sad moments. I believe that adults will like it too. And I give it 4 out of 5 stars because it connects to an older audience even though it is designed for a younger audience. I think younger children can see this, but a parent would have to explain some things to them after the movie.25. The author feels connected with the movie because she and the character Riley_____.A. enjoy the same movieB. have the same feelingsC. have the same move experienceD. have a similar family background26. What does the author think of Pete Doctor's job?A. Bad.B. Just so-so.C. Wonderful.D. Disappointing.27. After seeing the movie, the author has a new understanding of _____.A. fearB. sadnessC. angerD. joy28. In the author's eyes, the movie _____.A. won't attract people over 18B. is really unsuitable for childrenC. will be popular among kids and adultsD. can easily be understood by younger kidsCMary bought a dress in a women's clothing store. She felt very happy about buying the dress until she got home. Then she remembered she had left her purse atthe store. It was the third time that month that Mary had forgotten something important. Mary was angry with herself. She said, “Am I losing it?”Emma was teaching a class in mathematics at a college. She began to explain to the students how to solve a very difficult problem. She understood it very well. But somehow, at that moment, she could not explain it. Emma said, “I must be losing it.”Americans seem to have a lot of concern about losing it. At least that is what you would think from hearing them talk. They use the expression when they feel they are losing control. It can mean losing emotional control. Or losing the ability to do something. Or losing intelligence.Word experts differ about how the expression started. Some believe it came from television programs popular in the 1980s. Others believe it began with psychologists, who deal with how people think, feel and act.“We Americans have many concerns about controlling our lives. Perhaps we worry too much,” one psychologist said. “In many situations, to say you are losing it eases the tension (不安). It's healthy. And most people who say they are having a problem are not losing it.”Pe ople may feel more like they are losing it when they are “down in the dumps”. Word expert Charles Funk says people have been feeling down in the dumps for more than 400 years. The word dumps probably comes from Northern European countries. The languages of Denmark and Norway both have similar words. The words mean to fall suddenly. Americans borrowed this saying. And, over the years, it has become a popular way of expressing sadness.29. What problem did Mary think she had?A. She seemed to have a poor memory.B. She lost the ability to shop wisely.C. She easily lost emotional control.D. She had quite low intelligence.30. How does the author explain the use of losing it?A. By using examples.B. By giving instructions.C. By providing research findings.D. By describing his own experiences.31. We can infer from the psychologist that _____.A. Americans worry too much about their health problemsB. people really lose it when they say they're losing itC. it's good for your health to say you're losing itD.
