Four Steps to a SuccessfulThe first time in life? Then grasp your chance with your perfect performance on thedating night, by learning the following principle in heart.Dress properly. While everyone wants to give an impressive debut on the first date, you should avoid wearing something too bizarre to be accepted. If you are still inschool, a sportswear can fulfill your purpose. For businessman or grownups, casualclothes are recommended. Never put up your working uniforms,no matter how well youlike that Armani suit.It is no work. A few accessories such as a pair of sunglasses or silver loops on the wrist can add up to the romance sphere.Take a bath before dating. And if you like, spray a little perfume, but unless you're sure that he or she likes the smell, don' t use ones that are too strong.Watch your manner. You ' re no prince of the Scotland nor Cinderella in the legend.Proper manners will ensure a lasting relationship while bad ones scare away yoursweetheart. And do make sure you do not boast about your fortune, for, not everyoneare green addicts. And your way of smiling,or your greatestoath, should neither be "coy" nor "by St. Loy!" after the nun in Chaucer.Be a little sensitive than merely innocent. Do make sure you do not intrude his orher privacy on the first date. For there maybe something deeply concealed within the inner core of every heart, of which the owner doesn't share often with anyone buthis intimacy. Finally, wish you good luck.May you get your hearts combined and start a new journey in the miracle of life and love. Stay tuned till a borderline is reached, and keepon through out the whole way. My Dormitory LifeCompared with the forty year old shabby dormitory I am living in now,the one I lived in for three years in high school was heaven: three students shared one brand newsuite with air conditioners and a bathroom. In three years time we changed it thoroughly:the color of the floor turned from bright pink into muddy gray, and the closet a hive of insects proliferating among piles ofrotten fruit. And our masterpiece was the bathroom, a never drying swampwhich served as the habitat of various kinds of mold, and even rodents, rats would occasionallytake the trouble to pay us a visit, and.., all three of us felt like sobbing whenwe at last had to say good bye to our lovely filthy dormitory. Maybe it is becausethat the dormitory had changed us as well as we' d changed it.The first lesson our dormitory taught us was to look after ourselves.Frankly speaking, we were not good students at all. I still remember the underwear that was soaked insoapy water for one and a half years before it was finally thrown away. Almost eachof the boys' dormitories had gradually developed its own unique"fragrance"usually a mixture of rotten fruit, unwashed socks, stunk towels and some junk food.We could tell one dormitory from another by sniffing instead of looking. Our tolerance towards untidiness was amazing. However,in spite of all this,we really did make some progress.Bit by bit,we started to wash dirty clothes before they stunk, cleaned the garbage bin when it could holdno more trash, we even used brushes in a not-sc-successful attempt to refurbish thefloor. The point was that we were not obeying any order, we did every bit of thecleaning for ourselves, because we wanted to live in a better place. Though nothingwe did could be called an achievement, it was the first time we fully bore theconsequences of our behavior, and took the responsibility. Thus it was not surprising that I often found myself the only one to clean up myuniversity dormitory which looked no better than a garbage bin when my roommates felt normal of it.Whentalking about our dormitory life, and probably all the dormitory life,we should never leave out one thing. This was what we called "bed talks". Though it was considered"illegal,"there was nothing to stop us from deliberately starting a heated discussion right after lights were out.It was our favorite and the only way of ending our day, and we were as punctual for it as our parents are for work. What was themost commontopic?Girls,of course! What other topics were there for three energetic adolescent males lying comfortably in bed? We judged them, ranked them, argued overthem night after night without feeling the slightest sense of boredom for three whole years. Were wemaniacs? Who is not a maniac at eighteen?大学英语的学习-Learning English at CollegeLearning English at college is different from learning English at middle school. In middle school,we learn English mainly for the entrance examination for college, while the purpose of learning English at college is quite different. We study foreignlanguages now to improve our ability to work in the future and especially to communicate with foreiguers.Howcan we learn English well at college?Firstly, you should try your best to enlarge your vocabulary. Only in this way can you read more smoothly and understand otherswell.Secondly, you should pay more attention to the listening and speaking abilityin learning English. While talking with foreigners, if you can' t understand them, and do not know how to express yourself, the talking will be very difficult. And the last point is that you should improve your English whenever and wherever you can.Obviously, there is still a long way for us to go to learn English well.As a proverb says,Never too old to learn.' There are so many methods to learn English. So long as you keep on studying, your English will surely be improved. People often say we have entered the electronic age. Computers have become the center of life.No one can live and work without computers. In the future, everyone can work and study at home hefore a PC. There won' t be piles of files. Instead, a disc isOK enough. With the appearance of printers, the pen becomes less useful than before. And sincethe computer was created, paper is also gradually giving way to the screen, whichcan show lively moving things from different sides in the same picture. It is truethat with the developmem of science, such products as computers and printers willbe the major tools in our future life and work. But the traditional tools will also existfor a long time to supplement the function of the modern ones. At least, westill need pens to sign with and paper to sign on幸福是什么 -What Is Happiness?-Happiness means different things to different people. For example, some peoplebelieve that if they have lots of money, they will be happy. They believe that ifthey are wealthy, they will be able to do anything they want, which means happiness. On the other hand, some people believe that holding a high positionin the government is happiness. In this way, you have not onlymoney, but also manyother things which can' t be bought by money. However, other people believe that having lots of money is not happiness nor is holding a high position in the government. These people value their beliefs,or their intelligence, or their health. They think these can make them happy. For me, happiness is closely tied to my studies, my work and my family. When I madegreat progress in my studies, when I made contributions to the society through mywork, when all the members in my family live in harmony, sharing good and sad times, I was happy. Although the definition of happiness depends on each individual my"wealth" of happiness is in my studies, my work, and my family.6. Economic Development and Envir. Some people believe that economic development should never be at the cost of the environment. They think the present serious environmental problems are largely caused by rapideconomic development. For example, land resources are shrinking because of theindustrial development and the expansion of cities. Deserts are spreading becauseof over grazing, poor fanning, tree cutting, and strip mining. Our air and watersupplies are being polluted by poisonous gassesand waste products. It is important, therefore, that we should take another look at the way in which our industries andcities are developing. However, other people think it unnecessary to consider environmental problems nowand our first priority should always be given to economic development. They believe that environmental problems are inevitable and unavoidable in the process of economic development. They are only the by products of economic development, which can be dealt with later when we have the time and money.I think the second idea is completelywrong. Our ultimate aim in economic development is to provide a comfortable and happy life for our people. What is the point of economic development if we achieve it at the cost of our environment? There has been muchevidence to prove that a balance between the two helps more rapid and continuous development.7. 树立目标的重要性 -The Importance of GoalWhy is goal-setting important? Because goals can help you do and experience everymeaningful thing you hope for in life. Instead of letting life happen to you, goalsallow you to make your life happen.Successful people have visions of what their life should be and they set lots of goals, both sbort-term and long-range, to help them realize the visions. By setting goalsyou are taking control of your life. It is like having a map to show where you want togo. A driver with an aim arrives at the destination without any waste of time orwrong turns. On the contrary, a driver with no aim drives aimlessly around, nevergetting anywhere and just using up gas and oil.Winners in life set goals and follow through on them. They decide what they want and then get there by making plans andsetting goals. Goals ara not difficult to set and they are not difficult to reach. It is up to you to find out what your goals, ideals and visions really are. With aclear direction, and with certain plans, you will straightly get what you want.Without a goal, you have to live a passive life. You do not know where to go, whatyou want and why you are listless. Then your life be comes dull and meaningless just like the dead water in a muddy lake.8. 如何保持健康 -How to Keep FitHealth is the guarantee of one' s happiness. Without a healthy body, one cannot dowhat he wants to, not to mention accomplishing his goals in life. One can keep fit in three ways. First, he is to pay attention to hygiene. Stay awayfrom viruses, which means one should wash hands, take baths frequently, eat and drink properly. Stay away from bad life habits, such as smoking and overworking, whichseverely damage the body organs. Secondly, one is to exercise regularly. He may gojogging, swimming, bicycling, playing basketball and so on. Exercises will improveone' s ability to resist diseases. And last but not least, he should be optimistic, fearing no difficulties and obstacles, and always being in high spirits.Only in good health as well as in high spirits can we greet the future, which is fullof competition and challenges, and strive to achieve our ambitions energetically.9. 如何减轻压力 -How to Reduce StressStress is an inevitable part in our normal life. Many kinds of things, such as natural disasters, war and death can cause too much stress in our life. But according to apsychologist,on a day-to-day basis, stress may result from the small things:taking an exam, waiting in line, and having too many things to do in a limited time.We all need stress to add flavor, challenge, and opportunity to life, but too muchstress can seriously affect our physical and mental well-being,It reduces the body's immunity and harms the brain,If the stress lasts a long time,it may cause physical illness, insomnia, headaches, backaches, ulcers, high blood pressure-even heartdisease. When stress does occur,it's important to recognize and deal with it.There ore some methods we can try. A large number of physical activities can reduce onxiety.Shoring our stress with others can be enormously helpful.Making time for fun such os listeningto music may be good medicine. Sometimes even crying is on efficient way to releosestress.10. 城市化利弊谈 -Advantages and Disadvantages of U.Urbanization has been a subject of heated discussion for a long time. Some peopleare in favor, while others are opposed. In my opinion, urbanization has both advantages and disadvantages.Generally, the advantages of urbanization can be listed as follows. First, urbanization can quicken our pace to catch up with the developed countries. We all know that the developed countries are all highly urbanized.Second, urbanization will help to solve the problem of unemployment. It will create more jobopportunities for the unemployed. In addition, urbanization will free a great number of farmers from the fields, thus realizing the dream of agricultural mechanizationin our country. Finally, urbanization can improve the standards of living of themigrants who move to the urban area. However, the disadvantages of urbanization are also obvious. To begin with, administration of the increasing population in urban area might be a greatchallenge to the government. Moreover, more problems, such as increasing crime rate, over crowding, might increase, since more people are concentrated in a relativelysmaller place. It is evident that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Therefore,I am in favor of urbanization.11.逆境是成功的关键 -Adversity Often Leads to ProspeAdversity Often Leads to ProsperityEverybody wants to lead a successful life. But a number of people failed to realizetheir ambitions or their personal goals though they had dreamed of it throughout their whole lives. In order to succeed, one is required to have such personal qualitiesas diligence, persistence, intelligence, patience and so on. Besides them, I holdadversity is also one of the key factors and that it often leads to prosperity. The seemingly mistaken conclusion reveals the commonphcnomenon, People in adversity tend to express their full range of potential and actualize their own personal worth the very aim of a human life. And it is also supported by lots of successful people 's experiences both in old days and nowadays, both at home and abroad.During the Period of Chunqiu, the Emperor of the Yue,Gou Jian, was defeated by theWu and trapped in prison.Adversity stimulated him to revenge instead of discouraged him. Gou Jian hanged a gall and tasted it before sleep every day so as to keep thehumiliation and revenge always in mind.Owing to his undefeated qualities and persistent struggle,he defeated the Wuand drew himself from adversity to prosperityin the end.David Beckham, the captain of the English Soccer Team, was famous for his fascinating technique as well as his handsome appearance. He led England to defeat Argentina as a national revenge in the latest Korea Japan World Cup and he was regarded to be one of the five greatest football players in the world by Brazilian football star Robert Carlos. However, ten years ago,he was only an ordinary young player and was put in the second team of Man Utd.Once he was even lent to another team in English A by Ferguson and it seemed thathe would be abandoned as burden of his club someday. Beckham was not defeated by all the difficulties and he was sensible enough to make full use of adversity as an agent to push himself forward. He studied the combat, increased his stamina and strength, improved the technique and dribbling and trained the skill of passing and free kicking. As a result of his persistent and painstaking training, beginning with the famouswonderful goal from the centre circle in 1996, he brought himself a hot prospect.12. Spare the LotteryLottery, booming all of a sudden all over the world, attracts all kinds of people.Nearly everybody, old or young, rich or poor,is right now trying his luck in lottery or is thinking of doing so.Despite many disputes that lottery is receiving,I still assume, personally, that lottery does mere good than harm. The worst effect caused by lottery,as many socialists indicate,is that it produces in people an idea of "gain without pain' .But at the same time, they neglect onepoint--it is human nature that people all expect to obtain most while offer least. The thought of "gain without pain" is buried in everyone' s heart and is not bredby lottery.Consequently, lottery is innocent in this way.But there still remain a large groupof people against lottery, among whomare some lottery addicts.Such people are fond of lottery but unfortunately luck is never fond of them. Finally, they end up incomplaining about lottery, declaring the great harm, both psychologically and economically lottery has done to them.In this case, the problem lies in the attitude of people, not lottery.Since the major two sorts of harm are not lottery' s fault, let' s have an objective look on lottery. For the society, lottery is the most practical way to accumulatefunds. For those who happen to win a large fortune, I think they can' t kiss their lottery enough. Also for those who have not a single chance to be lucky dogs, lottery can mutely tell them the truth of "no pains, no gains."Spare the lottery! It, in itself can do more good than harm.NO.11.现在大学校园里,迟到、早退、旷课是常见的现象2.保证学生的出勤率对大学教育的重要性3.作为一个大学生应该怎样做Attend Your Classes RegularlyNowadays it is a very common phenomenon that some university students are latefor or even absent from classes, and there are also some students who slip out ofthe classroom before the class is over. In a word, class attendance has become a thorny problem to both the students and teachers. In fact, it is very important for the students to attend their classes regularly. On one hand, it will ensure you to catch up with the teachers in your learning, which is very helpful to you if you want to do a good job in your study. On the other hand, attending classes regularly is a way of showing respect to your teachers, too. Your teachers will feel bad if the students do not attend their classes, which, in turn, will affect their teaching and be no good for the students. What’ s more, attending classes regularly will help to form a good habit of punctuality, which is of greatimportance for the students to do a good job in the future. Therefore, we university students should form the good habit of attending ourclasses regularly from now on. Besides, going to classes on time and listening tothe teacher attentively are also a must to us. I ’ m strongly convinced that some day we’ ll benefit from it.NO.21.学生给老师打分已经普遍2.人们对其持不同态度3.我的看法Students ’ Rating of Their TeachersNowadays, it has become as common in colleges and universities for students tograde teachers as for teachers to grade students. In some universities students’rating has even become the only standard for judging teaching effectiveness. This, however, has caused great controversy. Some are in favor of the ratingsystem, for they hold that since students attend the teachers’ classes every day, they have the right to rate their teachers about their teaching quality. Others,on the contrary, are strongly against it.They believe that there is much more to teaching than what is shown on students’ rating forms. Students should not be expected tojudge how well the teachers have done in their jobs, because these judgments require professional knowledge, which is best left for the teachers’ colleagues. In my opinion, students’ rating of their teachers is necessary, for it servesas their feedback from which their teachers can learn about their teaching effectiveness and the aspects in which they should improve themselves. Therefore,as long as this rating is conducted in a way that can really shed meaningful lighton teachers’ performance, it’ s worth advocating.NO.31.宿舍生活有时会出现不和谐的情况;2.一个和谐宿舍生活的必要性;3.如何创造和谐的宿舍生活。

Tucked away on an old side street in Wan Chai is a narrow little shop that is home to Maureen, a charming Chinese noodle shop that combines molecular gastronomy and slow cooking methods. To find it, it helps to know where the historic Blue House heritage building on Stone Nullah Lane is in Wan Chai. From the Blue House, head to the side street just a bit farther up, turn left, and you'll soon find Maureen.Maureen is named after Maureen Loh, the chef and owner. Originally from Hong Kong, she lived in Canada for many years before returning to open her namesake eatery. We spoke briefly to Maureen. Though she was very busy overseeing the kitchen, handling administrative duties and greeting guests, it was clear that she is very much a person who pays attention to details.Much thought has been put into the preparation as well as the presentation of the food here. The food served here uses few ingredients and isn't fussy, but it is not what would be called simple either. On a lunchtime visit, we decided to try the six-course noodle tasting menu (HK$180 ($23) for lunch). We started with tomatoes and Spanish Iberico ham.The cherry tomatoes had been marinated in balsamic vinegar, shallots and garlic. They were tangy and sweet and a perfect complement to the salty thin-sliced ham. This cold dish was followed by "the perfect egg", a 63 C poached egg served on top of delicately earthy mushroom "fluid gel" and bits of Chinese ham.The next dish, abalone and chicken, was sliced slow cooked chicken breast infused with lemon oil and grilled abalone served on a bed of truffle potato noodles. The cold potato slivers were made from partially cooked potatoes so they had a bit of crunch. Both the chicken and the abalone were tender, but for those who prefer stronger flavors, this dish needs a bit more of a punch. It had a good blend of textures, though. The grilled hoisin pork and Chinese Shaoxing wine egg with a rich molten yolk was served with a bowl of the signature noodles and a steaming bowl of Chinese broth.A dollop of foamed sesame oil is added at the table bringing the rich and dramatic fragrance of the oil to the dish. The noodles are made by a noodle master according to Maureen's requirements and are a cross between the northwestern Chinese dandan noodles and the southern Chinese thin wonton noodles. They are soft but had just the right degree of firmness. The restaurant also serves noodle sets on their a la carte menu. These are served dry-tossed in a shallot sauce with a bowl ofMSG-free homemade broth on the side.My dining companion chose the noodles salmon sous videCanto-style (HK$98) and was very happy with the tender salmon (cooked to medium) served on a bed of blanched mustard greens with soy sauce and a sprinkling of slivered green onion and ginger. Simple, full of flavor, and delicious.。

There was a lot of traffic on the city roads but it got better when we were on the highway. Kitty and I felt sick for most of the trip. Finally, we arrived at the World Park. The sky was blue and everything was beautiful. We became very excited when we saw the Eiffel Tower from the coach! It is made of metal and really tall. When the coach stopped, we all got off quickly. We Are on a Journey人在旅途Wherever you are,and whoever you may be, there is one thing in which you and I are just alike, at this moment, and in all the moments of our existence. We are not at rest; we are on a journey. Our life is not a mere fact; it is a movement, a tendency, a steady, ceaseless progress towards an unseen goal. We are gaining something, or losing something, every day. Even when our position and our character seem to remain precisely the same, they are changing. For the mere advance of time is a change. It is not the same thing to have a bare field in January and in July. The season makes the difference. The limitations that are childlike in the child are childish in the man.

Everything that we do is a step in one direction or another. Even the failure to do something is in itself a deed. It sets us forward or backward. The action of the negative pole of a magnetic needle is just as real as the action of the positive pole. To decline is to accept the other alternative.

Are you richer today than you were yesterday? No? Then you are a little poorer. Are you better today than you were yesterday? No? Then you are a little worse. Are you nearer to your port today than you were yesterday? Yes, you must be a little nearer to some port or other; for since your ship was first launched upon the sea of life you have never been still for a single moment; the sea is too deep, you could not find an anchorage if you would; there can be no pause until you come into port.

A Loving Gentleness爱的温柔Do you know what a loving gentleness is like? Have you had a taste of it or shown it to others? Surely you can get some idea of it from swallows under the eaves. They show it when they are busy flying to and fro to feed their nestlings. You can see it from the moon shedding cool light over the scorched land so that it becomes comfortable. You can also feel it when you listen to the clock ticking steadily, so considerate as not to disturb a sweet dream. Again you can find it in the heart of a young girl. She is charming because of her loving tenderness.

It's also a picture of loving tenderness for a youngster playing a pampered child in his or her mother' lap. But later, the person is somuch changed by fate that tenderness is gone together with values of life. Some people are born uncouth. But tossed by life's storms they become gentle and good-humored unexpectedly, like mushrooms sprouting from the root of the tree of life.

True, gentleness or a tender care is often associated with love and kindness. It can also be found in a good- natured or broad-minded person. It is not fair to think that it has anything to do with weakness.

Gentle as spring breeze, it cracks the frozen river with its light touch. Soft as cotton, it renders a steel ball bouncing high from the ground paralyzed in its embrace. Similarly, tenderhearted as friendship, it melts the toughness of an ironwilled man and reduces him to grateful tears.

A loving gentleness is too subtle to describe. Though it seems invisible, inaudible and evasive to the touch, it is still perceptible. It is the quintessence of kindness, enthusiasm, love and moral support. It gives strength and power. It is the source of beauty.

The Choice of Companion选择朋友A good companion is better than a fortune, for a fortune cannot purchase those elements of character which make companionship a blessing. The best companion is one who is wiser and better than ourselves, for we are inspired by his wisdom and virtue to nobler deeds.
