This document may not be distributed or circulated to third parties.IntroductionThe UniCalib software provides an interface with all of Beta LaserMike diameter/fault gauges, as well as Centerscan & Layscan.UniCalib is designed to simplify the calibration of the BLM family of gauges from a PC or laptop under Windows. It replaces all previous DOS calibration software for the above gauges. It provides an easy to use interface and a choice of automatic or manual baud-rate detection on the communications port of their choice.Screenshots in this manual and information displayed in them are for illustration only. They do not always show optimal settings.Minimum hardware requirementsUniCalib is designed to run on Windows 95/98/2000/XP and NT 4.0 platforms with a Pentium 233 processor and 64 Megabytes of RAM. If you have less than 64 MB of RAM, you may encounter problems during normal installation (a resolution setting of 800x600 is also advised but not absolutely required).A dialog box will then appear. Type D:\ Installation\ setup ( Where D is the CD-ROM drive ), press ENTER and follow the instructions on screen.STEP 3:STEP 4:STEP 5This will install the software under a directory of your choice. It is however advised to keep the default installation directory shown:Select FINISH. It is not required to reboot the PC. Now refer to section Starting Unicalib for the first time.Starting Unicalib for the first timeStarting Unicalib for the first timeSTEP 1:Go to START - Program files and select Unicalib as shown:STEP 2:You will now be prompted to install and configure the Deskey drivers.Beta LaserMike uses a Deskey, hardware dongle to protect against unauthorised or inadvertent changes to critical settings within the gauge heads. The plug-in dongle is only for the use of BLM authorised people but the program requires the driver software to be installed whether or not a dongle is connected.Note: Ensure no other applications are running before proceeding.Press YES to accept and follow instructions on screen.Uninstalling the softwareConfiguration parameter SettingsCustomer site and nameThe default lines can be changed to specify your company and site:N = Beta LaserMike Ltd + <CR>S = Customer Site Location + <CR>A carriage return must be placed at the end of the string.Default languageCurrently, only English is available but when other languages are installed, the startup language can be specified. Each language corresponds to a number which is specified as follows:L = Language ID + <CR> e.g. L = 00 + <CR>{00,01,02,03,04}: English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.The identification number above corresponds to the DLL in the application directory i.e. 00 corresponds to UniCalib000.dll, 01 to UniCalib001.dll and so on. If an ID number is selected when DLL is not available in the application directory, a warning message will appear and the software will start up in English as default.RS232 initial detection modeThe baud rate and communication port that were selected at the last connection are automatically saved in the configuration file. These settings then appear in the selection box when a new connection is requested.RS232 connectionBaud rate detectionYou can choose between automatic and manual baud rate detection by pressing on the auto On/OffChoose your settings and press to continue. Press to exit at any time. The following detection window will appear:The parameter value can now be adjusted.This ?J/xx command is only available withgauge firmware (v 2.02) and later.The second method of sending commands and receiving data is to use the single line, RS232Comms Gauge Baud Comms Company Company DongleAccuscan LD/LDX & Microscan MLDMeasurementsThis part of the screen contains information about the main measurements coming from the gauge, such as the diameter readings X and Y, and the position of the sample in the gate area . If the gauge is a single plane, only information relative to the X plane will be displayed.Product calibrationThis part contains all the parameters that are to be adjusted for the calibration of the gauge. Modifying these parameters will have an effect on the gauge readings for a sample of a given size.Analog calibrationThis part displays analog output-related parameters. Depending on the configuration of the gauge, some parameters will appear accordingly e.g. second analog output enabled, multiple analog output enabled etc.The imperial/metric button switches to imperial or metric units on the RS232. This then modifies the measurement readings in the appropriate units.Measurement modeSetting the number of head averages:This is done either by writing the value directly in the text box when selected or by using the up and down arrows.The FFT detrending - removal of underlying slope in the data, see SRL predictor manualScanning flaw detection,STAC, Measurement logic - described in relevant BLM gauge manual Once all the options and values are set, press the SET button to update the gauge settings. You can also manually read these parameters back by pressing the READ button.The RS232 settings of the gauge can be changed by clicking on the “Gauge RS232 settings” button:Change the settings, press CONFIGURE. Then start a new connection with the gauge by pressing CTRL+S, which brings the selection screen back. Select the RS232 connection settings accordingly and press CONTINUE. This brings you back to the main screen. You can check that the new connection settings are displayed in the status bar at the bottom of the screen.2. Select type on units3. Depending on which gauge is connected enter the exact diameter of both samples in the field.4. Position the LARGE pin in the gate.5. Wait until configuration finishes. You will then be prompted to repeat above procedure for the SMALLcalibration pin:6. After a few minutes the calibration will be complete.If a Warning message is displayed during the calibration procedure, check the status code (displayed at bottom of screen) and refer to the relevant gauge manual to identify the meaning of the code.7. Press FINISH to exit.Manual calibrationIf for some reason, 2 pin mastering is not possible, the gauge can be calibrated manually.1. Place a sample of approximately 3/4 the gate size near the centre of the gate.2. Adjust the ‘X Linear’ field by small amounts until the X diameter reads correctly.3. Place a very small sample near the centre of the gate (This sample should not be below the range of the gauge).4. Adjust the ‘X Constant’ field by small amounts until the X diameter reads correctly.5. Repeat both adjustments until both samples read correctly and there is no need for any further adjustment.If the gauge is an X /Y gauge then repeat the above procedure for the Y-axis.Gain factors.Must alwaysbe 10000.Line speedinput type(Encoder or are energised. 50-1000ms.Tacho)Calibration procedure for MFD1001This procedure is also used for the MFD section of an MFG.1. Ensure the calibration unit has been correctly installed.2. Connect the power supply to the calibration unit and switch on.3. Switch on the gauge and enable the line start contact.4. Using the front panel keypad set the X-lump, X-neck, Y-lump, Y-neck threshold values tomaximum.5. Using the front panel keypad set the Lump counts to infinite. Repeat for the Neck counts.6. Using the front panel keypad reduce the X-lump value until the Lump indicator on the front panelilluminates. Record this reading and reset the X-lump threshold to maximum.7. Using the front panel keypad reduce the X-neck threshold until the Neck indicator on the frontpanel illuminates. Record this value and reset the X-neck threshold to maximum.8. Add the 2 readings obtained. The result should equal the calibration value on the calibrationcertificate +/- 5%.9. Repeat paragraphs 4 to 7 for the Y channel.10. The calibration mode is used to calibrate the Centerscan gauge. The modes available are: Normal, Base frequency and auto-calibration. Select the mode in the list box and press return, this calibration mode takes effect immediately. The current mode will appear highlighted next to the parameter label.RS232 unitsThis section allows switching the RS232 units. Choosing the units you want to switch to takes effect immediately.Motor controlThis allows starting and stopping the motor remotely via the RS232.Measurement typeThis allows swapping the measuring quantity from percent to linear to concentricity.Microscan2, Wirescan and LI1000 indicatorsCalibration tabMeasurementThe frame contains information regarding the diameter and position parameters as well as the optics condition. The target diameter can also be adjusted.CalibrationThe calibration parameters are similar to the LD interface. The averaging rate can be changed and the analog outputs readings are read-only.KI900 Indicator and OEM versionCalibration tabMeasurementThe capacitance, capacitance error and the line speed are read only. The capacitance target and the calibration mode can be set. To change the calibration mode, select the relevant button. This updates the mode automatically via the RS232. The field across the calibration mode label is updated in real-time and reflects the status. The different calibration modes available are: Normal, Zero, Gain, Demod adjustment and Bias adjustment. A button is also available to switch from metric to imperial and reciprocally. The capacitance readings will therefore be given either in pF per meter or pF per foot.
