As with almost all Christian holidays, Easter has been secularized andcommercialized. The dichotomous nature of Easter and its symbols, however, is not necessarily a modern fabrication. Since its conception as a holy celebration in the second century, Easter has had its non-religious side. In fact, Easter was originally a pagan festival.〝复活节是神圣的庆典〞的概念在公元_年已经形成,自那时起,复活节就站在了非宗教的一方. The ancient Sa_ons celebrated the return of spring with an uproarious festival commemorating their goddess of offspring and of springtime, Eastre. When the second-century Christian missionaries encountered the tribes of the north with their pagan celebrations, they attempted to convert them to Christianity. They did so, however, in a clandestine manner. It would have been suicide for the very early Christian converts to celebrate their holy days with observances that did not coincide with celebrations that already e_isted. To save lives, the missionaries cleverly decided to spread their religious message slowly throughout the populations by allowing them to continue to celebrate pagan feasts, butto do so in a Christian manner. As it happened, the pagan festival of Eastre occurred at the same time of year as the Christian observance of the Resurrection of Christ. It made sense, therefore, to alter the festival itself, to make it a Christian celebration as converts were slowly won over. The early name, Eastre, was eventually changed to its modern spelling, Easter. Easter.The date of Easter Prior to A.D. 325, Easter was variously celebrated on different days of the week, including Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. In that year, the Council of Nicaea was convened by emperor Constantine. It issued the Easter Rule which states that Easter shall be celebrated on the first Sunday that occurs after the first full moon on or after the vernal equino_. However, a caveat must be introduced here. The full moon in the rule is the ecclesiastical full moon, which is defined as the fourteenth day of a tabular lunation, where day 1corresponds to the ecclesiastical New Moon. It does not always occur on the same date as the astronomical full moon. The ecclesiastical vernal equino_ is always on March _. Therefore, Easter must be celebrated on a Sunday between the dates of March _ and April 25. Lent is the forty-si_ day period just prior to Easter Sunday. It begins on Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras (French for Fat Tuesday ) is a celebration, sometimes called Carnival, practiced around the world, on the Tuesday prior to Ash Wednesday. It was designed as a way to get it all out before the sacrifices of Lent began. New Orleans is the focal point of Mardi Gras celebrations in the U.S. Read about the religious meanings of the Lenten Season. The Easter Bunny 复活兔The Easter Bunny is not a modern invention. The symbol originated with the pagan festival of Eastre. The goddess, Eastre, was worshipped by the Anglo-Sa_ons through her earthly symbol, the rabbit. The Germans brought the symbol of the Easter rabbit to America. It was widely ignored by other Christians until shortly after the Civil War. In fact, Easter itself was not widely celebrated in America until after that time. The Easter Egg 复活蛋As with the Easter Bunny and the holiday itself, the Easter Egg predates the Christian holiday of Easter. The e_change of eggs in the springtime is acustom that was centuries old when Easter was first celebrated by Christians. From the earliest times, the egg was a symbol of rebirth in most cultures. Eggs were often wrapped in gold leaf or, if you were a peasant, colored brightly by boiling them with the leaves or petals of certain flowers. Today, children hunt colored eggs and place them in Easter baskets along with the modern version of real Easter eggs -- those made of plastic or chocolate candy. Easter (ēostre (Old English); Greek: ∏?σχα Paskha, fr om Hebrew: ?????? Pesakh,/Passover) is the central religious feast in the Christian liturgicalyear.[1] According to Christian scripture, Jesus was resurrected from the dead on the third day after his crucifi_ion. Some Christians celebrate thisresurrection on Easter Day or Easter Sunday[2] (also Resurrection Day or Resurrection Sunday), two days after Good Friday and three days after Maundy Thursday. The chronology of his death and resurrection is variously interpreted to be between AD 26 and AD 36. Easter also refers to the season of the church year called Eastertide or the Easter Season. Traditionally the Easter Season lasted for the forty days from Easter Day until Ascension Day but now officially[citation needed] lasts for the fifty days until Pentecost. The first week of the Easter Season is known as Easter Week or the Octave of Easter. Easter also marks the end of Lent, a season of fasting, prayer, and penance.Easter is a moveable feast, meaning it is not fi_ed in relation to the civilcalendar. The First Council of Nicaea (325) established the date of Easter as the first Sunday after the full moon (the Paschal Full Moon) following the northern hemisphere s vernal equino_.[3] Ecclesiastically, the equino_ is reckoned to be on March _ (regardless of the astronomically correct date), and the Full Moon is not necessarily the astronomicallycorrect date. The date of Easter therefore varies between March _ and April 25. Eastern Christianity bases its calculations on the Julian Calendar whose March _ corresponds, during the twenty-first century, to April 3 in the Gregorian Calendar, in which calendar their celebration of Easter therefore varies between April 4 and May 8.Easter is linked to the Jewish Passover by much of its symbolism, as well as by its position in the calendar. In most European languages the feast called Easter in English is termed by the words for passover in those languages and in the older English versions of the Bible the term Easter was the term used to translate passover.[4][5]Relatively newer[citation needed] elements such as the Easter Bunny and Easter egg hunts have become part of the holiday s modern celebrations, and those aspects are often celebrated by many Christians and non-Christians alike. There are also some Christian denominations who do not celebrate Easter.Popular modern depictions of Easter can be viewed as a celebration of spring. Easter is an important holiday for the West, the first full moon after the vernal equino_ each year a Sunday.Easter origins: According to The Bible, God s son Jesus was born in a manger, the time when he was threeyears old, the selection of twelve students, began missionary work. Easter Day
A Sunday between March 22 and April 25
The meaning of many different customs observed during Easter Sunday have
been buried with time. Their origins lie in pre-Christian religions and
Christianity. All in some way or another are a "salute to spring," marking
re-birth. The white Easter lily has come to capture the glory of the
holiday. The word "Easter" is named after Eastre, the Anglo-Saxon goddess
of spring. A festival was held in her honor every year at the vernal equinox
People celebrate the holiday according to their beliefs. Christians
commemorate Good Friday as the day that Jesus Christ died and Easter Sunday
as the day that He was resurrected (复活).
Easter Day is currently determined as the first Sunday after the full moon on or after
March 21. Many Americans go to church on that day. Then they usually have a
big family dinner. It has become tradition for Easter baskets to be given to children,
filled with candy or toys in the shape of eggs, rabbits, chicks or flowers. People
often buy new clothes for Easter.
Why we dye, or color, and decorate eggs is not certain. In ancient Egypt,
Greece, Rome and Persia eggs were dyed for spring festivals. In medieval
Europe, beautifully decorated eggs were given as gifts.
Egg Rolling
In England, Germany and some other countries, children rolled eggs down
hills on Easter morning, a game which has been connected to the rolling
away of the rock from Jesus Christ's tomb when he was resurrected. British
settlers brought this custom to the New World.
In the United States in the early nineteenth century, Dolly Madison, the
wife of the fourth American President, organized an egg roll in Washington,
D.C. She had been told that Egyptian children used to roll eggs against
the pyramids so she invited the children of Washington to roll hard-boiled
eggs down the hilly lawn of the new Capitol building! The custom continued,
except for the years during the Civil War. In 1880, the First Lady invited
children to the White House for the Egg Roll because officials had
complained that they were ruining the Capitol lawn. It has been held there
ever since then, only canceled during times of war. The event has grown,
and today Easter Monday is the only day of the year when tourists are
allowed to wander over the White House lawn. The wife of the President
sponsors it for the children of the entire country. The egg rolling event
is open to children twelve years old and under. Adults are allowed only
when accompanied by children!
