The night before, she laid out her favorite clothes: a white coat and a bright yellow shirt. When having breakfast, Sarah dropped some food on her shirt, so she had to change into her second-best clothes, blue jeans and a Jonas Brothers T-shirt.After breakfast Sarah rushed to catch the school bus and when she was just reaching the door the bus driver opened it. The door hit right in Sarah’s face and blood dripped from her nose. The driver wanted to send her home, but she refused, "It is the most important day of the year! I can’t miss it!"Before classes, Sarah went to her favorite swing. When rising high, she saw her best friend little Jack. She let go of the swing and waved to him with one hand. Unfortunately, she flew out of the swing and landed hard on the sand, breaking a leg and an arm. As she lay in the sand, she noticed a shiny thing on the ground beside her. With her good hand she took it.When Sarah’ mother rushed into the ward she was surprised by what she saw: her girl was lying in bed with an arm and a leg in the splint (夹板), a broken nose, andblood stains on her second-best clothes. Expecting to see her child crying, she was confused when she saw a big, bright smile on Sarah’s face."Sarah, look at you!" her mother cried. "You were hurt so badly and why are you smiling?""Look, Mommy, I found a diamond!" Sarah laughed.Life can be like that. It can be tough, even painful sometimes. Your attitude to change can make the whole transformation process much easier.Imagine change as a pair of shoes and this will help you understand change and how it works. I am sure that you have ever had a comfortable pair of shoes in your life. A pair of shoes is so comfortable that you really don’t want to get rid of them. You know you need a new pair, and may even have them, but you don’t want to wear them because you are comfortable with your current pair. Besides, the new pair may hurt your feet, give you blisters(水疱) or be awkward to wear to start with. So, you resist the new shoes. However, you know that this new pair would be much better for your feet, and after the initial discomfort they would probably be even more comfortable, yet you still resist.Do you know I’m doing this now? I’m wearing my comfortable shoes and they feel good. They have a hole in each heel, and the sole is starting to fall off, but I’m persisting in wearing them. This describes change exactly; change of our habits, change of our thought patterns. We stick with the old patterns because they are comfortable. Yet once weget over the initial pain of the transformation, the new pattern will be comfortable and feel good until the time comes when we need another new pair of shoes.73. One’s attitude towards something is usually traditional.D. The more often we change, the better our life will be.(C)It seems hard to watch someone yawn and not to yawn ourselves. Even reading about yawning can make you do it. Now, a new study has found why yawning has such a powerful force.Yawning when others yawn, the study suggests, is a sign of pity and a form of social connection. Kids don’t develop this deeply rooted behavior until around age four, the study found. Kids with autism (自闭症) are less likely to catch yawns. In the most serious cases, they never do. Yawning might help doctors to see whether the children are developing rightly. The work could also lead to a better understanding of the ways that people communicate and connect."Emotional infection seems to be a born thing that connects us together," said Molly Helt, a graduate student in psychology at the University of Connecticut. "Yawning may be part of that." Inspiration for her study came when she tried to get her own autistic son to clear his ears on an airplane. She repeatedly yawned at him, hoping he would yawn back. He never did."The fact that autistic kids don’t do it might mean they’re really missing out on that emotional connection with people around them," she said. "The biggest thing people try to figure out after birth is how we become humans and understand that humans have minds that are different from others’,"she added. "Autistic people never seem to understand that."Like infectious laughter and crying, scientists have found that yawning is a shared experience that promotes social connection. Helt said it could fight stress after a period of being nervous and spread a feeling of calm through a group.76. What does the new study suggest, according to the first two paragraphs?A. It is easy to stop yawning when you see others yawn.B. Yawning has some mysterious force which is related to God.C. Children follow others in yawning just after they are born.D. Yawning is a form of communication.77. According to Molly Helt, _________________.A. emotions are infectious, but yawning is notB. yawning helps clear ears on planesC. humans differ from animals because they communicate with othersD. yawning is a kind of emotional connection among humans78. Which of the following is NOT true about yawning?A. It is natural to yawn back if people around you yawn.B. Some kids are too young to yawn after others.C. Yawning can b e used to test children’s devel opment.D. Kids with autism yawn easily when others yawn.79. The author implies in the last paragraph that ________.A. it is bad manners to yawn on some social occasionsB. yawning can make people feel relaxedC. yawning is different from infectious laughter and crying in theoryD. the more you yawn, the happier you will beSection C(10')Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from80.______Teaching English to adult learners is a challenging thing. This book tells the story of one family‟s journey to a new place, their experience of racism, and the ability of people to move forward through hard time.In the book, Kate and Lynn Takeshima are sisters. The story begins in Lowa, where their parents‟ small family-owned store runs out of business. Soon after, the Takeshimas begin to face financial difficulties and they have to go in search of a new living. The family moves to Georgia where they work at a hatchery(孵化厂)with their uncle. On the way to their new home in Georgia they experience racism. They have difficulty in “fitting in” when a hotel manager tells them to go to “the back” where the “Indians” have to stay.Life gets even harder for the Takeshimas when they begin to work at the hatchery. Katie‟s parents are over-worked there. They have to stay in a cramped apartment with little space. And as if that isn‟t enough, Katie has too much schoolwork to do. During Katie‟s struggle, Lynn becomes sick and Katie feels unsafe, because she has always looked up to Lynn. There are hard times that Katie and her family have to experience. This story is a beautiful-example of resilience (适应力) and friendship. It also opens the reader‟s eyes to some of the struggles that Asian Americans are facing.70. Why does the family have to move to Georgis?A. They are not used to the life in Lowa.B. They don‟t have enough money to live in Lowa.C. People look down on them in Lowa.D.They want to open a hatchery in Georgia.71. From the second paragraph, we can infer that Indians ___________.A. run the hotelB. are not friendlyC. have a hard lifeD. like staying in the back72. The underlined word “cramped” in the third paragraph probably means ____________.A. comfortableB. crowdedC. quietD. bright73. Which of the following is TRUE, according to the passage?A. Katie‟s parents died in the hatchery.B. Lynn really looked up to Katie.C. Katie‟s uncle owned the hatchery.D. Katie went on schooling in Georgia.(B)Exercise, such as walking, can reduce the risk of diabetes (糖尿病) in people whose blood sugar is starting to rise. That outcome was shown in a large study. Despite trying hard, those who dieted and worked out lost very little weight. But they did manage to maintain a regular walking program, and fewer of them went on to develop diabetes.Exercise also may reduce the risk of heart disease. There seems to be some effect: Most of the heart protection appears to be realized by walking regularly. More intense exercise has been shown to provide only slightly greater benefits.Active people are much less likely to smoke; they‟re thinner and they eat differently than people who are less active. They also tend to be more educated, and education is one of the strongest predictors of good health in general and a longer life,. As a result, it is impossible to know with confidence whether exercise prevents heart disease or whether people who are less likely to get heart disease are also more likely to be exercising.Still, in the studies in which elderly people were assigned either to exercise or maintain their normal routine, the exercisers were less likely to fall, perhaps because they got stronger or developed better balance. Exercise may prevent broken bones --- but only indirectly. And what about weight loss? Lifting weights builds muscles but will not make you burn more calories. Jack Wilmore, an exercise physiologist at Texas A& M University, calculated that the average amount of muscle that men gained after a serious 12-week weight-lifting program was 2 kilograms, or 4.4 pounds. That added muscle would increase the metabolic rate (代谢率) by only 24 calories a day.Exercise alone, in the absence of weight loss, has not been shown to reduce blood pressure. Nor does it make much difference in cholesterol (胆固醇) levels. Weight loss can lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, but if you want to lose weight, you have to diet as well as exercise. Exercise. Exercise alone has not been shown to bring sustained weight loss. Just ask Steven Blair, an exercise researcher at the University of South Carolina. He runs every day and even runs marathons. But, he adds, “I was short, fat and bald when I started running, and I‟m still short, fat and bald. Weight control is difficult for me. I fight the losing battle.”The difficulty, Dr., Blair says, is that it‟s much easier to eat 1,000 calories than to burn off 1,000 calories with exercise. As he relates, “An old football coach used to say, …I have all my assistants running five miles a day, but they eat 10 miles a day,‟”74. In the case of Steven Blair, running does _________ to his weight control.A. harmB. muchC. goodD. little75. The last paragraph of the passage tells us that the problem is that people tend to _______.A. burn off 1,000 calories in a dayB. get more energy than they useC. use more energy than they getD. run five miles in a football game76. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?A. Exercise can certainly prevent heart disease.B. Walking can not reduce blood sugar in people.C. Lifting weight can directly prevent broken bones.D. Exercise alone can not reduce blood pressure77. According to the passage, the more educated one is, the __________.A. healthier one will generally beB. stronger and thinner one will beC. more cigarettes one will smoke.D. less exercise one will take.(C)Tim Richter and his wife, Linda, had taught for over 30 years near Buffalo, New Y ork --- he in computers, she in special education. “Teaching means everything to us.” Tim woul d say. In April 1998, he learned he would need a heart operation. It was the kind of news that leads to some serious thinking about life's purpose. Not long after the surgery, Tim saw a brochure describing Imagination Library, a program started by Dolly Parton's foundation (基金会) that mailed a book every month to children from birth to age five in the singer's home town of Sevier, Tennessee. “I thought, maybe Linda and I could do something like this when we retire.” Tim recalls. He placed the brochure on his desk, “as a reminder”.Five years later, now retired and with that brochure still on the desk, Tim clicked on . The program had been opened up to partners who could take advantage of book and postage discounts. The quality of the books was of great concern to the Richters. Rather than sign up online, they went to Dollywood for a looksee. “We didn't want to give the children rubbish.” says Linda. The books—reviewed each year by teachers, literacy specialists, and Dollywood board members—included classics such as Ezra Jack Keats's The Snowy Day and newer books like Anna Dewdney's Llama Llama series.Satisfied, the couple set up the Richter Family Foundation and got to work. Since 2004, they have shipped more than 12,200 books to preschoolers in their area. Megan Williams, a mother of four, is more than appreciative:“This program introduces us to books I've never heard of.”The Richters spend about $400 a month sending books to 200 children. “Some people sit there and wait to die.” says Tim. “Others get as busy as they can in the time they have left.”78.What led Tim to think seriously about the meaning of life?A. The influence of his wife.B. His love for teaching.C. His health problemD. He tries to save those waiting to die.D. He needs more money to help the children. Section C 4%Direction:Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words. There are great differences between Chinese and Western manners.Taking eating, for example, as the first difference. Whether at home or in a restaurant, Chinese pay a lot of attention to food. Chinese hosts prepare different types of food to offer the guests different tastes and show politeness. Leftover food is a sign that the hosts are generous. In the West, however, a dinner is more for the atmosphere than for food. “Seeing the bottom of”one‟s plate is a wonderful ending to a meal in western countries.Another difference can be seen in the way gifts are exchanged. Most Chinese people won‟t open a gift until the guest leave. Westerners, on the other hand, usually open the gift and admire it in front of the giver. In addition to this, in China, people don‟t often show affection by touching each other in public, although you may meet some young people walking down the street hand-in-hand. In Western culture, people are free to express themselves. Chinese people are very friendly and helpful towards strangers compared to Westerners, who won‟t always be friendly. The reason behind the differences between China and Western countries is probably the culture. Chinese culture has history of more than 5,000 years, and Chinese people have developed their own music, arts, traditional Chinese medicine, cooking methods, and so on. They are completely different when compared to Western People. Chinese believe in healthy eating, and have many methods to improve the health. However, Western culture places more emphasis on adventure and exploration. Many Western visitors find Chinese culture hard to understand, as it has its own system of values and beliefs.(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements with NO MORE THAN 12 WORDS)82. Chinese hosts prepare plenty of food to ______________________________________.83. What does a westerner do if he or she receives a gift?_____________________________________________________________________.84. Different from Chinese people, westerners often publicly _______________________85. What is thought to be more important in Western culture?_____________________________________________________________________.IV. Writing (15%)Direction: Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.86. 我们能在网上买到这场足球比赛的票。

For each of them there are four choices marked a, b, c and d. Choose the one that first best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.(A)Advertising is a highly developed twentieth-century industry. The development of radio, television, cinema, magazines and newspapers has gone hand in hand with the development of advertising. Why is advertising so popular? Is it a waste of money? It has been proved again and again that repeated advertising increases product sales. Since it increases production, the price can be reduced. Therefore advertising, instead of making a product more expensive, makes it cheaper.Advertising is now a scientific business. Once managers would say jokingly, “I know that half of what I spend on advertising is wasted, but I don’t know which half.”Now, all parts of an advertising program are properly measured and researched. What makes a good advertisement? There have been major changes in advertising in the past sixty years. People read advertisements partly for information and partly for pleasure. Today’s advertisements often start with a question, or a puzzle, with the purpose of attracting the reader’s attention. Of course, most advertisements contain information. But this is usually contained in a text that is interesting and often funny. Humor is very important. Sometimes advertisements tell a story, or the story may be continued over a number of advertisements. However, there is a danger in this. It is possible that the reader or viewer will remember the advertisement but not the name of the product.66. The purpose of advertising is ________.A. to increase products salesB. to make a product much betterC. to spend more moneyD. to reduce the production67. Which of the following can be used in place of the underlined phrase “ hand in hand”?A. Here and there.B. Again and again.C. As usual.D. At the same time.68. What is meant by what managers said in the second paragraph?A. All the money on advertising was wasted.B. Not all the advertisements were well designed.C. All the managers knew about advertising then.D. Managers spent no money on advertising.69. What does the writer think of advertising?A. UselessB. UnnecessaryC. ImportantD. Wasteful(B)Coroline Pond sets off on Thursday on a 4.500-mile journey to visit her husband, Daniel, and her two step-children. Against their will, she and Daniel are forced to live on different continents. The reason is that Caroline is one of hundreds of British wives who are victims of a law which prevents their foreign husbands from joining them in this country. This law makes it almost impossible for a British woman to marry a foreigner---unless she is prepared to live in her husband’s native country. But the law, which was intended to reduce the number of immigrants coming into the United Kingdom, does not apply to the British male who marries a foreign woman. He has the legal right to bring her to live with him in the country.“In the eyes of the law, women are second-class citizens,”Caroline says, “In this country, we have about as many rights as a dog which belongs to a man.”Caroline, 27, is a demonstrator of physiology(生理学)in the Zoology Department at Oxford University. Daniel is an associate professor of Biology at Michigan University. Before they married eight months ago, she had applied to the Home Office for permission for him to live in Britain. “It is a waste of time,”she says, “The answer is always ‘never’.”For the sake of her career, Caroline wishes to stay in her job for at least another 18 months and the couple was hoping to live in the small Victorian house she owns at Oxford. Ideally, while his wife is at the university, Daniel would have liked to come here and write scientific textbooks.“We have both accepted that I should be the breadwinner.”Caroline says, “ Daniel has always looked after the children and would continue to do so. I cannot understand why there is this law against women. After all, I pay the same taxes as a man.”For the past few years, Daniel and Caroline have already crossed the Atlantic 20 times between them. “ We are lucky because we can afford to pay the fares, but there must be many women who cannot.” She says.(C)The days of the hunter are almost over in India. This is partly because there is practically nothing left to kill, and partly because some steps have been taken, mainly by banning tiger-shooting, to protect those animals which still survive. Some people say that Man is naturally a hunter. I disagree with this view. Surely out earliest forefathers, who at forest possessed no weapons, spent their time digging for roots, and were no doubt themselves often hunted by meat-eating animals.I believe the main reason why the modern hunter kills is that he thinks people will admire his courage in overpowering dangerous animals. Of course, there are some who truly believe that the killing is not really the important thing, and that the chief pleasure lies in the joy of the hunt and the beauties of the wild countryside. There are also those for whom hunting in fact offers a chance to prove themselves and risk death by design; these men go out after dangerous animals like tigers, even if they say they only do it to rid the countryside of a threat. I can respect reasons like these, but they are clearly different from the need to strengthen your high opinion of yourself. The greatest big-game hunters expressed in their writings something of these finer motives(动机).One of them wrote.“You must properly respect what you are after and shoot it cleanly and on the animal’s own territory(领地)。

For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C or D. Choose the one that suits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.(A)The city of Rome has passed a new law to prevent cruelty to animals. All goldfish bowls are no longer allowed and dog owners must walk their dogs. This comes after a national law was passed to give prison sentences to people who desert cats or dogs.“The civilization of a city can be measured by this,” said Monica Carina, the councilor behind the new law.The newspaper reported that round bowls don’t give enough oxygen for fish and may make them go blind.“Rome has tried to protect fish more than anywhere else in the world. It stands out for recognizing that fish are interesting animals that deserve over respect and pity every bit as much as dogs and cats and other animals,” said Karin Robertson, a director of the People for the Ethical treatment of Animals.Lat year a law was passed in Italy that gives people who desert pets big finesand prison sentences. Since then local governments have added their own animal protection rules. The northern city of Turin passed a law in April to give pet owners fines of up to $598 if they do not walk their dogs three times a day.The new law in Rome also says that owners mustn’t leave their dogs in hot cars or cut their dogs’tail to make them look lovelier. The law also gives legal recognition to the “cat ladies” who feed homeless cats. The cats live all over the city from ancient ruins to modern office car parks.67. The new law passed in Rome will _________.A. guarantee better conditions for goldfishB. help improve fishing environmentC. stop people from catching goldfishD. discourage keeping goldfish at home68. People in Rome believe that the civilization of a city can be judged by _________.A. exchanges with other citiesB. Protection of ancient ruinsC. recognition of animal loversD. awareness of animal protection69. People may break the law in Turin if they _____________.A. keep their dogs or cats in carsB. shut their dogs home all day longC. raise their cats near ancient ruinsD. feed homeless animals in car parks(B)Be aware of those who use the truth to deceive. When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he can create a false impression. For example, someone might say, “I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery. It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars!” This guy’s a winner, right? Maybe, or maybe not. We then discover that he bought two hundred tickets, and only one was winner. He’s really a big loser! He didn’t say anything that was false, but he omitted important information on purpose. That’s called a half-truth. Half-truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.Untrustworthy candidates in political campaigns often use this tactic. Let’s say that during Governor Smith’s last term, her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents runs an advertisement, saying “During Governor Smith’s term, the state lost one million jobs!”That’s true. However an honest statement would have been, “During Governor Smith’s term, the state had a net gain of two million jobs.”Advertisers will sometimes use half-truths. It’s against the law to make false claims so they try to mislead you with the truth. An advertisement might boast, “Nineout of ten doctors recommend Yucky Pills to cure nose pimples(粉刺).” It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Corporation. This kind of deception happens too often. It’s a sad fact of life: Lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well.(C)We live in a technological society where most goods are mass-produced by unskilled labor. Because of this, most people think that craft no longer exists. One of the ways these people wrongly support their view is by pointing to100-year-old homes which are still solid, and arguing that it is the craftsmanship that is responsible for their durability, “Homes in those days were well-built.”they say. No doubt these homes were well-built, but what these people have done is mix up the quality of material used in the house with the quality of the craftsmanship.Homes today could be built to last just as long as those old homes if people were willing or able to pay the price. For example, most people can no longer afford solid oak stairways, although they were once fairly common in older homes. Nor can they afford the high labor cost of employing a carpenter to build the stairway. Yet if someone can pay the high cost, there are still plenty of carpenters around able to make those stairway. And not only would these carpenters know how to build them, they would probably do a better job than carpenters of old.One thing the modern carpenter has which enables him to do a better job is much more advanced tools. Such tools as laser beams and power planes help them lay out a house better and make more precision cuts on the wood. Also, it is not uncommon anymore to find carpenters with college degrees and carpenters with a sold knowledge of mathematics, which would enable them to deal with more difficult house designs. The problem of modern quality, then, really boils down to the problem of material, for the modern carpenter is just as able to produce craftsmanship as the carpenter of fifty yeas ago, but only if given proper material.Section C 4%Direction:Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.Apple’s iPhone may be big news, but in Silicon Valley all eyes are on Facebook. The all-age private Internet club that began as a college student hangout has become the technology industry’s hottest ticket.Facebook, which started out offering simple Web profile pages for users to update personal details and link to their friends, has since late May provided an easy way to enhance profiles with growing menu of 1,400 applications from virtual horoscopes to music video players.Membership has exploded to over 29 million active users, up one million users in just the past week and five million from six weeks ago. It’s adding more than 150,000 member a day, up from its pace of 100,000 six weeks ago, Facebook says.Facebook has become the central way many users keep track of Web sites they use every day. More importantly, it’s a way to keep up with what friends are doing, says Chief Technology Officer Adam Angelo, a high school classmate of Zuckerberg.Far bigger rival MySpace has difficulty striking a balance between sharing personal data and not revealing “too much information”. Many Facebook users post their mobile phone numbers, political affiliations or changes in dating status.“Facebook is not open the way the Web is open, Users share all kinds of informationon the site they would never share on the Web,” Angelo, 22, says. “We get usersto reveal more information because we protect users’ privacy. One protest group, called “Facebook Should Be Students ONLY”, with 20,000 members, is magnet from random discontent.“Facebook should most definitely be ONLY students,” Katerina Laurel, 15, of Kansas City, Kansas, writes in Web shorthand. “Our CHOIR teacher has a Face book membership.”Laurel’s solution is to use the site’s privacy controls to exclude the teachers/principals/dens/choir directors in her life. “I can just block them from my site if I don’t want them to see any of my profile.” She says.(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)77. She pushed herself forward through the water by moving her peduncles from side to side. The movement put harmful pressure on Grace’s backbone. So a company offered to create a man-made tail for her. The tail had to be strong enough to stay on Grace as she swam but soft enough that it wouldn’t hurt her. Now, the dolphin is about to get an even happier ending. This month, Grace will star in Dolphin Tale, a film that focus on her rescue and recovery. Her progress has inspired more than just a new movie. Many people travel from near and far to meet her. Seeing Grace swim with her man-made tail gives people so much courage.92. When Grace first arrived at the Ocean Park, her trainer worried about her________A. physical buildB. potential abilityC. chance of survivalD. adaptation to the surroundings.93. A man-made tail is created for Grace to _________.A. let her recover fasterB. make her comfortableC. adjust her way of swimmingD. help her perform better tricks94. The story of Grace inspires people to__________.A. stick to their dreamsB. treat animals friendlyC. treasure what they haveD. face difficulties bravelyCAlthough being famous might sound like a dream come true, today’s star, feeling like zoo animals, face pressures that few of us can imagine. They are at the center of much of the world’s attention. Paparazzi (狗仔队) camp outside their homes, cameras ready. Tabloids (小报) publish thrilling stories about their personal lives. Just imagine not being able to do anything without being photographed or interrupted for a signature.According to psychologist Christina Villareal, celebrities —famous people —worry constantly about their public appearance. Eventually, they start to lose track of who they really are, seeing themselves the way their fans imagine them, not as the people they were before everyone knew their names. “Over time,” Villareal says, “they feel separated and alone.”The phenomenon of tracking celebrities has been around for ages. In the 4th century B.C., painters followed Alexander the Great into battle, hoping to picture his victories for his admirers. When Charles Dickens visited America in the 19th century, his sold-out readings attracted thousands of fans, leading him to complain about his lack of privacy. Tabloids of the 1920s and 1930s ran articles about film-stars in much the same way that modern tabloids and websites do. Being a public figure today, however, is a lot more difficult than it used to be. Superstars cannot move about without worrying about photographers with modern cameras. When they say something silly or do something ridiculous, there is always the Internet to spread the news in minutes and keep their “story” alive forever. If fame is so troublesome, why aren’t all celebrities running away from it? The answe r is there are still ways to deal with it. Some stars stay calm by surrounding themselves with trusted friends and family or by escaping to remote places away from big cities. They focus not on how famous they are but on what they love to do or whatever made them famous in the first place.Sometimes a few celebrities can get a little justice. Still, even stars who enjoy full justice often complain about how hard their lives are. They are tired of being famous already.95. It can be learned from the passage that stars today _________A. are often misunderstood by the publicB. can no longer have their privacy protectedC. spend too much on their public appearanceD. care little about how they have come into fame96. What makes it much harder to be a celebrity today?A. Availability of modern media.B. Inadequate social recognition.C. Lack of favorable chances.D. Huge population of fans.97. What is the author’s attitude toward modern celebrity?A. Sincere.B. Skeptical .C. Disapproving.D. Sympathetic.DPeople who multitask all the time may be the worst at doing two things at once, a new research suggests. The findings, based on performances and self-evaluation by about 275 college students, indicate that many people multitask not out of a desire to increase productivity, but because they are easily distracted and can’t focus on one activity. And “those people turn out to be the worst at handling different things,” said David Sanbonmatsu, a psychologist at the University of Utah.Sanbonmatsu and his colleagues gave the students a set of tests and asked them to report how often they multitasked, how good they thought they were at it, and how sensation-seeking or imperative they were. They then evaluated the participants’ multitasking ability with a tricky mental task that required the students to do simple mathematical calculations while remembering a set of letters. Not surprisingly, the scientists said, most people thought they were better than average at multitasking, and those who thought they were better at it were more likely to report using a cellphone while driving or viewing multiple kinds of media at once. But those who frequently deal with many things at the same time were found to perform the worst at the actual multitasking test. They also were more likely to admit to sensation-seeking and impulsive behavior, which connects with how easily people get bored and distracted.“People multitask not because it’s going to lead to greater productivity, but because they’re distractible, and they get sucked into things that are not as important.” Sanbonmatsu said. Adam Gazzaley, a researcher at the University of California, San Francisco, who was not a member of the research group, said one limitation of the study was that it couldn’t find out whe ther people who start out less focused toward multitasking or whether people’s recognizing and understanding abilities change as a result of multitasking. The findings do suggest, however, why the sensation-seeker who multitask the most may enjoy risky dis tracted driving. “People who are multitasking are generally less sensitive to risky situations.” said Paul Atchley, another researcher not in the group. “This may partly explain why people go in for these situations even though they’re dangerous.”98. When Sanbonmatsu and his colleagues conducted their research, they _______A. assessed the multitasking ability of the studentsB. evaluated the academic achievements of the studentsC. analyzed the effects of the participants’ tricky mental tasksD. measured the changes of the students’ understanding ability99. According to Sanbonmatsu, people multitask because of their ________A. limited power in calculationB. interests in doing things differentlyC. inability to concentrate on one taskD. impulsive desire to try new things100. From the last paragraph, we can learn that multitaskers usually_________A. drive very skillfullyB. go in for different tasksC. fail to react quickly to potential dangersD. refuse to explain the reasons for their behavior上理工附中2013学年第一学期高三英语摸底测试答案。

But Janey insisted, and husband Peter unwillingly got to work. The 51-year-old owner of a ship supply company modified a small wooden house that he’d built years earlier for daughter Abbie’s toy horses, and made a door of glass. After adding the library’s final touches, the family hung a signboard on the front, instructing users to ―take a book, return a book,‖and making the Henriksen library, now one of several hundred like it nationwide and among more than 2,500 in the world, the only Little Free Library in Palm Beach County. They stocked it with 20 or so books they’d already read, a mix of science fiction, referencetitles, novels and kids’ favorites. ―I told them, keep in mind that you might not see it again,‖ said Janey, a stay-at-home mom.Since then, the collection keeps replenishing itself, thanks to ongoing donations from borrowers. The library now gets an average of five visits a day.The project’s best payoff, says Peter, are the thank-you notes left behind. ―We had no idea in the beginning that it would be so popular.‖65. And he surely deserves additional praise: the man who popularized the clever literary attack on racism.I say clever because anti-slavery fiction had been the important part of the literature in the years before the Civil War. H. B. Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin is only the most famous example. These early stories dealt directly with slavery. With minor exceptions, Twain planted his attacks on slavery and prejudice into tales that were on the surface about something else entirely. He drew his readers into the argument by drawing them into the story.Again and again, in the postwar years, Twain seemed forced to deal with the challenge of race. Consider the most controversial, at least today, of Twain’s novels, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Only a few books have been kicked off the shelves as often as Huckleberry Finn, Twain’s most widely read tale. Once upon a time, people hated the book because it struck the mass rude. Twain himself wrote that those who banned the book considered the novel ―trash and suitable only for the slums‖. More recently the book has been attacked because of the character Jim, the escaped slave, and many occurrences of the word nigger. (The term Nigger Jim, for which the novel is often severely criticized, never appears in it.)But the attacks were and are silly—and miss the point. The novel is strongly anti-slavery. Jim’s search through the slave states for the family from whom he has been forcibly parted is heroic. As J. Chadwick has pointed out, the character of Jim was a first in American fiction — a recognition that the slave had two personalities, ―the voice of survival within a white slave culture and the voice of the individual: Jim, the father and the man.‖There is much more. Twain’s mystery novel Pudd’nhead Wilson stood as a challenge to the racial beliefs of even many of the liberals of his day. Written at a time when the accepted wisdom held Negroes to be inferior to whites, especially in intelligence, Twain’s tale centered in part around two babies switched at birth. A slave gave birth to her master’s baby and, for fear thatthe child should be sold south, switched him for the master’s baby by his wife. The slave’s light-skinned child was taken to be white and grew up with both the attitudes and the education of the slave-holding class. The master’s wife’s baby was taken for black and grew up with the attitudes and intonations of the slave. The point was difficult to miss: nurture, not nature, was the key to social status. The features of the black man that provided the stuff of prejudice—manner of speech, for example—were, to Twain, indicative of nothing other than the conditioning that slavery forced on its victims. Was Twain a racist? Asking the questioning the 21st century is as wise as asking the same of Lincoln. If we read the words and attitudes of the past through the ―wisdom‖ of the considered moral judgments of the present, we will find nothing but error. Lincoln, who believed the black man the inferior of the white, fought and won a war to free him. And Twain, raised in a slave state, briefly a soldier, and inventor of Jim, may have done more to anger the nation over racial injustice and awaken its collective conscience than any other novelist in the past century.72. How do Twain’s novels on slavery differ from Stowes?A. Twain was more willing to deal with racism.B. Twain’s attack on racism was much less open.C. Twain’s themes seemed to agree with plots.D. Twain was openly concerned with racism.73. The story of two babies switched mainly indicates that .A. slaves were forced to give up their babies to their mastersB. slaves babies could pickup slave holders’ way of speakingC. blacks’ social position was shaped by how they were brought upD. blacks were born with certain features of prejudice74. What does the under lined word ―they‖ in Paragraph 7 refer to?A. The attacks.B. Slavery and prejudice.C. White men.D. The shows.75. What does the author mainly argue for?A. Twain had done more than his contemporary writers to attack racism.B. Twain was an admirable figure comparable to Abraham Lincoln.C. Twain’s works had been banned on unreasonable grounds.D. Twain s works should be read from a historical point of view.Section CDirections:Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each76.When you see a clever advertisement in a newspaper, do you say to yourself, ―Ah, that’s good. I’d like to have one of these‖? Or do you say, ―What lies are they telling this time? It can’t be very good or they wouldn’t have to advertise it so cleverly‖? Both of these people exist: the fist are optimists; the second pessimists and realists.77.Advertisements can be extremely useful if they are honest: if, let us say, you have broken you pen and you want to buy another, the first thing to do is to look at as many advertisements for pens as you can find. That will help you to choose the model, color and price that suits you. Advertisements save a lot of time and trouble in a quick and simple way. If the advertisements are true and accurate, the customers will be satisfied and will probably buy from the same firm nest time and advise their friends and acquaintances to do the same.78.Some advertisers hope to sell his goods quickly and to make a large profit on them. They know that no customers will buy from them a second time or recommend the products to their friends. Other advertisers make claims for their products which they know perfectly well to be incapable of verification, like advertising that a certain toothpaste contains a particular substance knowing that this substance is in fact neither beneficial or harmful to the teeth. Such advertisements do not tell downright lies, but their advertising is deliberately misleading.79.If there was no advertising, fewer goods would be sold, so the cost of each article would be higher. The more you advertise, the more cheaply you can afford to sell your products. Advertising also encourages makers to improve their goods continually. One manufacturer of soap-power claims that his products does not harm housewives’ hands, and quotes the opinions of prominent doctors to prove this. All other soap-powder manufacturers are forced to make their products harmless too.80.As advertisers become more and more expert at their work, they appeal to all the human emotions in the effort to increase sales: love of a bargain, fear of ill health, the desire to show off and many others. But more and more customers are also becoming suspicious of and resistant to high-powered advertising. This is producing a deliberately modest advertisement that is intended to disarm the customers’suspicions by giving an impression of absolute sincerity, or even of deliberate understatement.Section DDirections:Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.A loving person lives in a loving world. A hostile person lives in a hostile world. Everyone you meet is your mirror. Mirrors have a very particular function. They reflect the image in front of them. Just as a physical mirror serves as the vehicle to reflection, so do all of the people in our lives. When we see something beautiful such as a flower garden, that garden serves as a reflection. In order to see the beauty in front of us, we must be able to see the beauty inside of ourselves. When we love someone, it's a reflection of loving ourselves. We have often h eard things like ―I love how I am when I'm with that person.‖ That simply translates into ―I'm able to love me when I love that other person.‖ Oftentimes, when we meet someone new, we feel as though we ―click‖. Sometimes it's as if we've known each other for a long time. That feeling can come from sharing similarities.Just as the ―mirror‖ or other person can be a positive reflection, it is more likely that we'll notice it when it has a negative connotation. For example, it's easy to remember times when we have met someone we're not particularly crazy about. We may have some criticism in our mind about the person. This is especially true when we get to know someone with whom we would rather spend less time.Frequently, when we dislike qualities in other people, ironically, it's usually the mirror that's speaking to us. I began questioning myself further each time I encountered someone that I didn't particularly like. Each time, I asked myself, ―What is it about that person that I don't like?‖ and then ―Is there something similar in me?‖ in every instance, I could see a piece of that quality in me, and sometimes I had to really get very introspective. So what did that mean?It means that just as I can get annoyed or disturbed when I notice that aspect in someone else, I’d better reexamine my qualities and consider making some changes. Even if I'm not willing to make a drastic change, at least I consider how I might modify some of the things that I'm doing. At times we meet someone new and feel distant, disconnected, or disgusted. Although we don't want to believe it, and it's not easy or desirable to look further, it can be a great learning lesson to figure out what part of the person is being reflected in you. It's simply just another way to create more self-awareness.(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN 12 WORDS).81.
