高一英语阅读理解训练二十二AMy Favourite BooksJo Usmar is a writer for Cosmopolitan and co-author of the This Book Will series(系列)of lifestyle books. Here she picks her top reads.MatildaRoald DahlI once wrote a paper on the influence of fairy tales on Roald Dahl's writing and it gave me a new appreciation for his strange and delightful words. Matilda's battles with her cruel parents and the bossy headmistress, Miss Trunchbull,are equally fumy and frightening, but they're also aspirational. After DarkHaruki MurakamiIt’s about two sisters —Eri, a model who either won’t or can’t stop sleeping, and Mari, a young student. In trying to connect to her sister, Mari starts changing her life and discovers a world of diverse "night people" who are hiding secrets.Gone GirlGillian FlynnThere was a bit of me that didn't want to love this when everyone else on the planet did, but the horror story is brilliant. There's tension and anxiety from the beginning as Nick and Amy battle for your trust. It's a real whodunit and the frustration when you realise what's going on is horribly enjoyable.The StandStephen KingThis is an excellent fantasy novel from one of the best storytellers around. After a serious flu outbreak wipes out 99.4% of the world's population, a battle unfolds between good and evil among those left. Randall Flagg is one of the scariest characters ever.1. But after a long struggle, I found a hobby that changed my life.My depression really kicked in after my parents moved to the UK when I was about 11 years old. Having to get used to life in a foreign country was very difficult. The friends I knew were gone, andthe changes in my environment led to my depression. I had problems in many parts of my life, which made it feel impossible for me to carry on.At that time, I didn’t understand that depression was an illness. I remember a particular day when I couldn’t find enough strength to get myself home from playing in the park—it felt like I was carrying the world on my shoulders.Other times, I even thought about killing myself —I just felt so trapped. I never really reached out for help either, a s I felt that there wasn’t anyone who could have helped with my situation.What turned my life around, however, was discovering street dancing. I was introduced to it by a friend, and I started taking classes at a studio in London. After a few weeks, I began to go out and meet a lot of other dancers to practice and train with them on a regular basis. It gave me a purpose, and eventually the happiness I gained from it helped me manage my depression. The dancing helped me get my life back, focus on my studies, and get through university.My advice to anyone who might be going through something like I was is to reach out for help. The thing about life is that it changes, and you never know what might come your way. If someone had said to me during those dark moments that I would have gone on to achieve the things I have, I wouldn’t have ever believed it.Just take each day as it comes, and remember that there’s always someone, or something, out there to help you.4. Find someone or something to rescue them.C. Wait for help to come patiently.D. Accept everything that life sends their way,7. How might the author feel about his future?A. Hopeful.B. Fearful.C. Satisfied.D. Uncertain.CRecently, American President Trump announced his budget. One of the budgets would cut all money to the Institute of Museum and Library services and libraries across the United States. However, as far as I'm concerned, we need to save our libraries.Libraries provide books and after-school programs for children. They encourage literacy (识字)with summer programs. They help inspire a life-time love of learning and reading in children of all ages. Without them, where will kids with no Internet at home do their homework? Where will kids have a place to study or borrow books after school? Therefore, we need libraries for our kids. We need them so that kids can grow up with a place, other than school , where learning and exploration is encouraged. For adults, libraries serve as a place where they can use the Internet to apply for jobs, get job training, early voting centers as well as book clubs to help make new friends. It can also serve as a place to pick up a book and learn something new. What’s more,they can also borrow a book and get away from it all.Libraries save our information for the next generation. When we live in an age of alternative (选择性的)facts, where science is ignored in favor of personal feelings, we need libraries now more than ever. We need them to educate ourselves on the facts and hold the government responsible for them. We need them to have strong public participation.If you agree with me,you shouldn’t be silent on this issue. You can write or call directly to tell the president to save our libraries. You can also write to both your state Senators (参议员)and your district representative. If you do not know who they are, you can find out here. Let them know this isa beneficial issue because all people use public libraries in their daily life.8.The author thinks that Tr ump’s decision about his budget is___________.A. difficultB. practicalC. personalD. wrong9.Unlike kids, adults use libraries to ________.A. surf the InternetB. borrow some booksC. do social activitiesD. explore the world10. Which statement about libraries does the author agree with?A. Libraries play a more important role nowadays.B. Information can be stored in libraries forever.C. Government needs libraries more than before.D. Science should be learned in our libraries.11. What is the author's purpose of writing the last paragraph?A. To call on us to disagree with the government’s decision.B. To call on us to fight with the American president.C. To encourage us to talk about the issue.D. To persuade us to agree with his viewpoints.DDo you have trouble trying to create the next big idea? Sometimes the answer isn’t to just force an idea out of your mind. Instead, you might want to try sitting back, relaxing and letting your mind wander. Yes, you heard that correctly. If you are in need of a new idea, try daydreaming.Researchers from the university of California, Santa Barbara, found an association between daydreaming and creative problem-solving. Their study includes having participants first do an“unusual-use task”. They h ad to try to come up with as many different ways to use an object as they could.Then, the participants chose to do one of the following four things before doing the “unusual-use task” again: complete a difficult task; complete an easy task; take a 12-minute break; or skip the 12-minute break and move right on to the task exercise again.Surprisingly, the group that performed best was the one that completed the easy task. Many participants reported that they were daydreaming while performing the easy task. So the researchers believed that this daydreaming might have helped unlock their creativity.But how could daydreaming help the brain come up with creative ways? The answer is something known as “unconscious thought”. Even when you are not actively working to solve a problem, it is still in the back of your mind. Your brain is still thinking about the problem, but in a much more subtle (不易察觉的) way.When you daydream, your mind is allowed to think in ways it normally would not. Because it is free of control, it can create completely new and out-of-the-box ideas.Great ideas never come easily, but that does not mean you always have to work hard to get them. Feel free to do what you want and let your mind wander.12. The “unusual-use task” in Paragraph 2 means that participants ______.A. complete an easy taskB. complete a very difficult taskC. take a 12-minute breakD. think of various ways to use an object13. Why did the participants who completed the easy task perform best?A. They were not actively working to solve the easy task.B. They daydreamed and it helped them be more creative.C. They were daydreaming while performing the difficult task.D. They skipped the 12-minute break to complete the task again.14. What does the underlined phrase “unconscious thought” in Paragraph 5 mean?A. Your brain wander in a subtle way within your control.B. Your brain knows clearly what you’re thinking and doing.C. Your brain is thinking about a problem outside of your awareness.D. Your brain refuses to receive any information from the outside world.15. The passage mainly wants to tell us that ______.A. brainstorming is important to creative ideasB. daydreaming is a way to improve creativityC. problem-solving skills are important in our livesD. the more we exercise brains, the more ideas we’ll get阅读理解二十二1—5 CCDAD 6—10 CCACA 11—15 ADBCB。

(22) -Snowflakes

第二十二篇 SnowflakesYou’ve probably heard that no two snowflakes are alike. Of course, nobody has ever confirmed that statement by examining every one of the estimated one septillion snowflakes that drift to Earth each year. Still, Kenneth Libbrecht, a professor at the California Institute of Technology, is confident that the statement is true.Snowflakes aren’t flaky, says Libbrecht. At their basic level, they’re crystalline. The lattice of every snowflake is six-sided in shape. The simplest snow crystals are six-sided flat plates and six-sided columns. Such crystals are common in places where the air is extremely cold and dry. Snow crystals acquire their special beauty when their simple six-sided symmetry blossoms. Under the right conditions, each of the six corners of a crystal sprouts 1 what is called an arm. In a matter of 2 minutes, the arms can become highly ornate and give the crystal a star like appearance.Several factors in the environment affect the shape and growth rate of a snow crystal. One factor is humidity. Crystals grow faster and in more intricate shape as humidity increases. A second factor is air temperature. A snowflake is born when several molecules of water vapor in a cloud land on a speck of dust and freeze to form a simple crystal. As the young crystal bops 3 around in the cloud, it passes through air pockets of varying temperatures. If the crystal passes through a pocket of air that is, say, -15 degrees Celsius, it will grow quickly and sprout six arms says Libbrecht. If the crystal is then tossed into a warmer pocket, one about -100C, the arms tips will stop growing quickly and form six-sided plates. If the crystal then drifts into an even warmer pocket of about -50C, its top and bottom will grow more quickly than its sides and become more column like in shape.In the course of 4 its life span, a snow-crystal might flutter through many warmer and colder pockets, acquiring a complicated and unique growth history. Such a history will give rise to 5a snowflake that is unlike any other. Each arm on the snowflake will look exactly like every other one, but the crystal itself will be one of a kind.Using his cooling tanks, Libbrecht has learned how to create snow crystals of different shapes - plates, columns, needles, etc. Libbrecht has even refined his techniques so that he can make crystals that look highly similar to one another. Still, he lacks the control to manufacture identical twin snowflakes. A slight difference in humidity and temperature can upset the growth profile 6 of a crystal.词汇: snowflake /5snEJfleIk/n.雪花 septillion /sep5tiljEn/ n. The plane taxied to the very end of the runway before slowly becoming airborne. The tips of its wings dragged limply on the ground. With this menacing takeoff, the V oyager started on its history making flight around the world.Circling the globe without stopping had been done before. However, the V oyager was the first plane to fly around the world without refueling.To carry enough fuel for such a trip required a plane designed for efficiency. The wings of the V oyager are light and flexible, so flexible that they flap (拍动), bowing at a 12 meter arc. In rough air the plane pitches and rolls, like a row-boat in heavy swells.To keep the plane light, the cockpit has only one seat. The crew, made up of Jeana Y eager and Dick Ruyan, had to roll over each other to switch off piloting duties. Finally, to maintain maximum efficiency, the plane can’t fly faster than 200km/hr. On average it goes no faster than a race car in the Indy 500. At this speed, it took nine cramped (难忍的) days to circle the globe. The journey of the V oyage was as much a testimony to human endurance as it was to innovative engineering.The V oyager’s route was planned to avoid two dangers: rough weather and unpredictable or hostile countries. Even with the careful planning, the crew ran into both. They had to pass closeby a hurricane, at one point doing a 180-degree turn to avoid heavy turbulence (猛烈地、无规则地气流). Refused emergency permission to fly over Vietnam, the V oyager skirted dangerously close to a wall of thunderstorms, looming more than 25,000 meters high. They suffered a broken wing tip before they even left the ground and came uncomfortably close to crashing in the 11th hour.Limping home on dangerous low fuel tanks, the V oyager cruised over Edwards Air Force Base early on December 23, 1986. Thousands of people came out to watch the historic landing.Today the V oyager is on display at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington,D.C.. It hangs with planes of other famous and daring pilots who dared to do the undoable.73.
