History of TabletsThe concept of a tablet computer dates back to the 1960s, when Alan Kay first proposed the idea of a portable computer that could be used as a personal digital assistant. Read the following two paragraphs with contradicting views, and write a passage on the issue. You should clearly state your opinion and explain the reasons for your opinion. You should write about 800 words.Tablets are the ideal system of organization in schools. They are convenient, in which much information is stored in small sizes and kept together in one place, and cheap, as digital information is now becoming more affordable than print. As evolution continues to rock the modern world, digital devices will become more and more reliable. Someday, they will entirely replace print books, and hopefully, that day will come soon. Many may argue that tablets are much more convenient than paper books. But not everyone shares this preference of tablets or finds them convenient. In fact, in a study conducted by Book Industry Study Group (BISG), it was found that 75% of college students preferred traditional textbooks in which they can highlight the key words and write notes. Also, some may suggest that it is cheaper to invest in tablets than textbooks. In fact, in a 2008 study of public schools in Kentucky it was estimated that the cost of textbooks and supplies totaled around $44 million. The cost per school was around $988 for textbooks and supplies. That is roughly the cost of only two tablets. To provide tablets to all the students in a school would be an enormous sum. Therefore, we may conclude that while tablets have their purposes, they should not replace the printed books used in schools.Tablets, with their large storage and small sizes, have occupied a large part of electronic appliance sales. Nowadays, faced with the large investment in paper books, many advocates approve of the wide use of tablets in school education. However, these advantages cannot guarantee their popular existence in the school's life. Firstly, tablets are likely to disturb the traditional education. Traditional education emphasizes good absorption of knowledge in class and timely review after school. Actually, tablets seriously damage the first step which matters most. On the one hand, the tablets deprive students of the opportunity to make notes and stress these key points on their books. As for me, I tend to underline the important notions on my books and take down notes besides the specific book knowledge. However, students are unable to write down anything on the tablets. Thanks to these new functions, they may mark some sentences when studying. But under most circumstances, they have to listen to the teachers and try to keep everything in their mind. This seems like cramming and is far away from the proper way of taking classes. It may happen that students keep little in mind at the end of classes because they have to remember too much. In that way, students cannot even have a good review after class because of the low class efficiency and the poor comprehension of book knowledge. On the other hand, other entertaining softwares in tablets may distract students in class. Around me, many friends download lots of funny games to their tablets and spend hours playing them. If tablets are widely used in class, students' class efficiency cannot be guaranteed. Attracted by the interesting things, students will waste their class timeinto playing and having fun. What’s worse, students can find it easier to pretend to be studying hard when they are reading novels in class. This, in return, makes it difficult for teachers to maintain the class discipline. All of these, eventually, undermine students' study.Secondly, the high cost of tablets sets another barrier for their wide applications in school. Many advocates may insist that tablets help schools save much money in buying textbooks and publishing more materials. In contrast, tablets are going to cost much more. As one important role in modern electronic appliances, tablets are equipped with the up-to-date chips as well as the multi-functional systems. Also, tablets' large storage well meets people's demands for a good deal of information. But these great sides of tablets come to their customers along with a much higher price than the traditional paper books. As a result, schools have to invest more money in the purchase of these high-tech appliances. On the other hand, the investments in other teaching facilities as well as the training of young faculty have to be cut back on. Without doubt, it will bring negative influence on schools' teaching quality and reputation. Besides that, tablets also cause higher financial burden to students' families because they have to pay more for tuitions. But this extra cost is totally necessary because tablets may not benefit school education as is referred in the paragraph above. Thus, judging from the economic perspective, the wide application of tablets is not ideal in the foreseeable future. Finally, tablets, in fact, do harm to students' body. As we all know, these electronic appliances with screens send out radiation. Long-time exposure to the radiation just undermines people's health unwittingly. As is concluded from some official scientific experiments, radiation does harm to people’s immune system. As is often the case, people tend to feel rather tired after spending long hours sitting in front of screens. As for students exactly in their development period, radiation problem should not be neglected. If traditional textbooks are finally replaced by tablets, students will have no choice but to expose themselves to the screen for long hours. This increases their chances of suffering from the invisible radiation. Furthermore, staring at the screen for a long period brings great harm to people's eyes. Faced with heavy study burden, students’ eyes are more fragile. I believe health weighs much heavier than the seeming convenience and the health threat of tablets should be carefully considered. Overall, I strongly oppose the wide application of tablets in schools. Admittedly, tablets are excellent tools for entertainment since they offer vivid visual effects and large storage. However, it is doubtful whether tablets can well serve as a good tool for study. They are functional but could students be mature and self-disciplined enough to resist the temptations of playing? The answer is probably no. Even most students are able to make it, their body may be going to say no to tablets.。
