We usually start gathering outthere around 3:15 or so once we've had a few minutes to grab a snack from our lockers. By 3:30 there's a huge group of kids out on the field, probably 30 or 40 of us on most days.We don't really have any set teams or anything, we just sort of randomly split up into different pick-up games based on what people feel like playing that day. If it's a nice warm day, there's usually at least one big game of ultimate frisbee going with 10 or 12 players per side. Man, that game can get crazy with that many people! Frisbees going every which way, people diving all over to try to catch them. We've lost so many discs over the years sailing into the woods along the edge of the field.When it's cooler out, soccer is always super popular. That lets you run around a ton to stay warm. We typically go with really big teams, like 15 or 20 per side, so it's just total madness and chaos. No one ever passes, everyone just boots the ball as far as they can whenever they get it. Makes for a pretty sloppy game, but it's hilarious and gets your heart pumping.If the field is too wet and muddy for soccer or frisbee, we usually go for basketball over on the outdoor courts instead. Atthat point, it's not really about playing proper basketball at all, it's just sort of a full-body contact sport to see who can muscle their way to the basket and score.Honestly, my favorite times out there are when we get a big random game of something silly going, like kickball or dodgeball or even just tag. There's nothing quite like a 40-person game of dodgeball with everyone pegging balls from every angle. Or a ridiculous, all-out, no-boundaries, no-rules game of tag or manhunt across the entire field with teams of 20 kids all chasing each other around like maniacs. We go totally feral, but it's an absolute blast.We usually play out there for an hour or two until we're completely spent. Covered in sweat and dirt, grass-stained, dirt between our toes from playing in socks and sandals like idiots in the spring. By the time we drag ourselves home for dinner, we're just total wrecks - and we love every second of it.
