We hope that more advanced learners and teachers will also find it useful. The book is a comprehensive survey of structures and forms, written in clear modern English and illustrated with numerous examples. Areas of particular difficulty have been given special attention. Differences between conversational usage and strict grammatical forms are shown but the emphasis is on controversial forms. In the fourth edition, the main changes are as follows.1.Explanation and examples have been brought up to date.2.There is now more information on countable and uncountable nouns, attributive and predicative adjectives, adverbs of place, sentence adverbs, cleft sentences, prepositions, conjunctives, modal verbs, perfect tenses, infinitive constructions, the passive, purpose clauses.3.Some material has been rearranged to make comparisons easier. For example, parts of chapters on can, may, must, etc. are now grouped by functions; verbs of liking and preference have a chapter to themselves; suggestions and invitations have joined the chapter on commands, requests and advice.4.The content list now summaries every edition heading, and there is a new index containing many more entries references. In this edition, the sign “~” is frequently used to show a change of speaker in examples of dialogues. Note also says that although the sign “=”sometimes connects two words or expressions with the same meaning, it is often used more freely, e.g. to indicate a transformation from active to passive or direct to indirect speech. We wish to thank all at Oxford University Press who have assisted in the preparation of the fourth edition. They can be pets such as cats and dogs but they canalso be unlikely animals such as squirrels (a lthough more unusual animals don’t always go down well). But one man has showed he finds comfort in his pet alligator短吻鳄.Joie Henney, from Pennsylvania, U. S., has a five-foot, 60 pounds emotional support alligator. Joie says Wally could one day be 16 foot long. Wally’s diet includes chicken wings and he shares an indoor plastic pond with a smaller rescued alligator named Scrappy. Wally has never bitten anyone and is even afraid of cats, according to Joie. Joie explained, “He’s far from a typical alligator. He loves hugs and he loves giving kisses.” As well as having full run of the house, Wally is regularly taken out for walks to parks, malls and even restaurants.Joie, who refused to take medicine when going through depression, found great relief in interaction with Wally. They are the numbers behind the train journey one man took from Southampton in the UK to eastern China. Roger Tyers, 37, spent a month on board trains and over $2,500 —almost triple the cost of a return flight— to travel to the Chinese port city Ningbo for academic research in May..It was the climate crisis, not a love of trains, that drove Tyers to choose this route over a return flight. Tyers said that he felt it necessary to stop flying when UN climate experts warned that the world has less than 11 years to avoid terrible levels of global warming. Tyers said that his train journey to China produced almost 90% less emissions than a return flight. A passenger on a return flight from London to New York brings as much CO2 as the average person in the European Union does by heating their home each year, according to the European Commission.Tyers is not the only person to avoid air travel in response to climate change. Thousands of people worldwide have publicly pledged to stop flying, including teenage activist Greta Thunberg, who has inspired youth climate protests around the world.Activist Maja Rosen started the "Flight Free" campaign in Sweden in 2018 with the aim of encouraging 100,000 people not to fly for one year. Although only around 14,000 people signed the online "flightfree2019" pledge, Rosen said that the campaign had made more people aware of the urgency of the climate crisis and motivated them to travel by train more often. Rosen, who stopped flying 12 years ago, says one of the problems is that people feel there's no point in what you do as an individual. The campaign is about making people aware that if we do this together, we can actually make a huge difference.13. How much will it take to fly from Southampton to Ningbo?A. over $2,500B. about $830C. less than $420D. $ 50014. Kindergarten students are typically four or five years of age.In class, they are introduced to the alphabet, numbers and colors; they study their bodies, their families, and their communities;they listen to stories and read aloud; they make art projects; and they learn about holidays, plants, animals, and other topics in science and social studies. Some kindergartens also teach introductory reading and mathematical skills.Kindergartens tend to offer children a foundation for the development of social skills,self-confidence,motivation,and the process of knowing. The first kindergarten was started by German educator Friedrich Froebel in 177 in Blankenburg,Prussia(now part of German).Froebel chose the German term kindergarten(children’s garden) because he intended children in his school to grow as freely as flowers in a garden.Froebel’s kindergarten was based on the idea that children’s play was s ignificant. At the time, almost no children under the age of seven attended school, but Froebel designed his kindergarten for children between the ages of three and seven. The kindergarten became widely admired for its revolutionary teaching methods, and Froebe l’s followers soon established other kindergartens based on his educational philosophy.Froebel developed his own ideas about education by combining his belief in scientific observation with his belief in the interconnection of all things. In addition,Froebel was concerned that the spread of industrialization would negatively affect the family, but he b elieved that kindergartens could increase the status of mothers and children.Froebel’ s ideas became increasingly popular in the 180s,but because kindergartens were associated with liberalism(自由主义) andfree-thinking,they were banned by the Prussian government after the failure of the liberal revolution of 188.Basic factsabout kindergarten 1. ofkindergartenstudentsFour or five yearsThings to belearnt in akindergarten●They’re introduced to thealphabet, numbers, and colors;they study theirbodies, their families, and their communities.●They listen to stories and read aloud;theymake art projects.●They learn aboutholidays, plants, animals, and other topics inscience and social st udies.●Some kindergartens also teach introductory2. and m athematical skills.续表Basic factsabout kindergartenRoles ofkindergarten●It offers children a foundation to 3.their social skills,self-confidence,motivationand the process of knowing.Details about the first kindergarten ●German educator Friedrich Froebel was the 4.of the firstkindergarten.●Froebel chose the name because he wanted kids to grow5. .●His kindergarten was based on the idea that children’s 6.was significant.●The kindergarten was well 7. for its revolutionaryteaching methods.Froebel’s ideas about 8.●He 9. his belief in scientific observation with hisbelief in the interconnection of all things.●Froebel was concerned that the spread of industrialization wouldhave 10. effects on the family.●Kindergartens could increase the status of mothers and children.答案及剖析:1.Age 信息综合题。

How do you work smarter and keep work-related pressures from getting to you? A number of possibilities exist.1. Take a real vacation. Completely being away from work is one of the best ways to recharge your batteries. Any kind of change of scene will help. Taking a class, helping an elderly relative — anything that lets you get off the boring work will help you feel like yourself again. 36 .2. Work out, no matter what. Giving yourself a pass from working out just because you have a busy day is a terrible idea. 37 . Exercise is a great help for stress. Burnouts become less common when you put yourself first for at least a little while each day.3. 38 . Managers tend to reward their workers for their efforts, even if they are far from perfect. You should do the same for yourself and reward yourself from time to time, too. A movie, a gift for yourself — both add up to helping you feel good about yourself.4. Create. Learning how to create in business or anything else can be a tremendous contributor to feeling in control. Identify a creative attempt to apply yourself to and commit yourself to it. 39 .5. Learn to not be hard on yourself. Guilt is one of the most unproductive emotions that one can experience. If you have not been working as well as you would like, being severely self-critical will not help you improve.40 . Determining to never be addicted to guilt or self-criticism can immediately help you feel better about life and work.A. Value the rewards of managersB. You will quickly begin to feel betterC. If you were the boss, you would reward yourselfD. Then, you can go back to working as hard as everE. Therefore, getting rid of such an idea proves importantF. Rather, it will only make you feel as if you will never do betterG. 南昌市2021高考英语二轮阅读明白得限时训练精品题(6)(1)

南昌市2021高考英语阅读明白得二轮限时训练精品题(6)及答案【深圳市2021高考英语综合能力测试题(5)】CIt was a beautiful summer afternoon. I happened to be at a local Walmart picking up some stuff for my wife when I laid my eyes on two young ladies. They were walking confidently, with their heads held high, which made me believe that they were involved in some kind of competitive sport. They were wearing T-shirts, at the back of which printed, "Pain is temporary, but pride is forever." Thinking of these words, I automatically said to myself, "That's right! No pain, no gain."Whatever is worth having is worth fighting for, and with fight, there comes pain! Fortunately, pain is just temporary. However, it is a necessary step you need to take to get your gain.Athletes and their coaches understand this so well. They spend so many hours and so much effort preparing for a competition. Some will think about giving up when the training is so painful, but coaches are there to remind them that "quitters never win and winners never quit".. So they know that when victory comes, they will be proud of themselves and that pride can last a lifetime. You've probably heard the saying, "There's no such thing as a free lunch." Well, it is true. Everything in life has a price, whether you agree or not. To want something for free will always lead to deception. Even if you get it, you will not value it or enjoy it, because it is free.No one has told you that life is easy! In fact it is a series of struggles and fights. You will achieve what other people call "impossible" only when you are willing to endure pain and overcome fear and doubt. Your achievement in life is in direct proportion to how much sacrifice you are willing to make.Successful people are usually and wrongly labeled as lucky or highly favored by circumstances. However, if you hear their personal stories, you will realize that they went through a lot of trials, but still kept on going, enduring the pain to make where they are today. If we understand that every effect has its cause, then we will grasp the fact that we do have a chance to influence the outcome we get in life.36. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?A. Athletes are too proud to give up.B. Gain is necessary for getting your pain.C. If you get something free, you will not treasure it.D. The author noticed the two ladies because they were having a competition.37. What can we learn from Paragraph 5?A. Life is short.B. Life is meaningful.C. Life is colorful.D. Life is tough.38. From the last paragraph we know that_________.A. success comes from perseveranceB. success comes from taking risks or chancesC. successful people are often looked down uponD. successful people are never regarded as lucky dogs39. Which part of a website is the passage probably taken from?A. Culture.B. Education.C. Sports.D. Entertainment.40. What's the best title for the passage?A. No pain, no gain.B. Pride is forever.C. Pain is temporary.D. Successful people are lucky.【参考答案】36-40 CDABA伤痛是短暂的,荣耀是永久的。

Sometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t expect someone else to love you until you love yourself. Either way, you’v e got to love yourself first and this can be tricky. Sure we all know that we’re the apple of our parents’ eyes, and that our Grandmas think we’re great talents and our Uncle Roberts think that we will go to the Olympics. But sometimes it’s a lot harder to think such nice thoughts about ourselves. If you find that believing in yourself is a challenge. It is time you build a positive self-image and learn to love yourself.Self-image is your own mind’s picture of yourself. This image includes the way you look, the way you act, the way you talk and the way you think. Interestingly, our self-images are often quite different from the images others hold about US. Unfortunately, most of these images are more negative than they should be. Thus changing the way you think about yourself is the key to changing your self-image and your whole world. The best way to defeat a passive self-image is to step back and decide to stress your successes. That is, make a list if you need to, but write down all of the great things you do every day. Don’t allow doubts to occur in it.It very well might be that you are experiencing a negative self-image because you can’t move past one flaw or weakness that you see about yourself. Well, roll up your sleeves and make a change of it as your primary task. If you think you’re silly because you aren’t good at math, find a tutor. If you think you’re weak because you can’t run a mile, get to the track and practice. If you think you’re dull because you don’t wear the latest trends, buy a few n ew clothes. But remember, just because you think it doesn’t mean it’s true. The best way to get rid of a negative self-image is to realize that your image is far from objective, and to actively convince yourself of your positive qualities. Changing the way you think and working on those you need to improve will go a long way towards promoting a positive self-image. When you can pat(拍)yourself on the back, you’ll know you’re well on your way. Good luck!60.
