Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving technique. It aims to keep blood and oxygen flowing through the body when a person’s heart and breathing have stopped. It involves external chest compression and rescue breathing, which should be performed by trained person. When the heart stops, the lack of oxygenated blood can cause brain damage in only a few minutes and a person may die within eight to ten minutes. CPR performed within the first six minutes of the heart stopping can keep oxygenated blood flowing to the brain and other vital organs until more definitive medical treatment can restore a normal heart rhythm.
