湖北省华中师范大学第一附属中学2023-2024学年高一上学期阶段性检测一英语试题学校:___________姓名:___________班级:___________考号:___________一、阅读理解If you’re planning to visit Japan, it is a good idea to understand some basic customs. DON’T WALK AND CHEW GUM.Americans are always in such a hurry that we grab lunch at the drive with one hand while holding onto the steering wheel with the other. The Japanese don’t walk around while eating or drinking. This seems strange in a culture that like vending machines (自动售卖机). In fact, the Japanese will often get a snack or soda out of a vending machine and then stand there, next to the vending machine, until they’ve finished it.SURGICAL MASKSSeeing photos of people in Japan wearing surgical masks, you might wonder if surgical masks are just a fashion. Meanwhile, in America, we cough into the open air, and sneak out of restrooms without washing up.In Japan, it’s not nice to share germs (细菌). If you’re sick and you must leave your home, you put a surgical mask because that’s polite. Surgical masks are also worn out of caution — if you travel in a packed train during flu season, it’s a good idea to do so.THE MISUSE OF SOY SAUCEYou’re probably used to eating white rice with soy sauce (酱汁) all over it in American Asian restaurants, but don’t do it in Japan. Soy sauce in Japan is not meant for drowning out the subtle flavor of white rice.About YOUR SHOESWearing shoe in the house is just not something people do in Japan. You should remove your shoes immediately after entering a Japanese home and also when entering most historic buildings.1.The author is telling American tourists in Japan to ________.A.drink while walking B.eat while drivingC.eat food quickly D.drink near the vending machine 2.The Japanese consider wearing a surgical mask as ________.A.a fashion B.a dangerC.good manners D.a good idea3.When you are visiting a Japanese home, you are advised to ___________.A.get a snack B.remove your shoesC.put soy sauce over the rice D.wear a maskOne in five teens suffers from mental illness Parents of depressed (忧郁的) teens often think their child is just going through a certain stage, and don’t take the symptoms (症状) seriously. When I was 12 years old, I noticed something was not right with me. I told my mom, but she said I was just going through normal “teenage stuff”. I went on with everyday life, but was not able to function well. I felt depressed and seemed to be crying all the time. I never wanted to come out of my room or be around people. I even pushed people away who meant a lot to me.I told my mother again what was going with me. Again, she explained away my symptoms by saying my hormones (荷尔蒙) were probably just acting up, but she did agree to take me to the doctor. I knew deep down that whatever was wrong with me was more than just hormones.Parents need to take their children’s mental health seriously. Brushing it off as nothing will not make it go away. I want parents to understand that 20 percent of teens between the ages of 13 and 18 are suffering. Many of these teens feel like their voices won’t be heard if they tell their parents what they are experiencing. Parents and family members need to come together so that teens who suffer can get treatment.I was very scared to tell my mom about what I was feeling, and it made me feel worse to be told I was just being a teen and that was hormonal. I truly believe that if teens were mere comfortable talking with their parents and telling them personal things, teen suicide and mental breakdowns would decrease. Teens will get treatment, feel more positive, and be able to live a more normal life.4.How did the mother take the writer’s mental illness at first according to the text?A.Seriously.B.Nervously.C.Casually.D.Badly5.What does the underlined phrase “Brushing it off” in paragraph 3 mean?A.Cutting it out.B.Concentrating on it.C.Paying no attention to it.D.Making fun of it.6.What is a proper way for parents to deal with children’s mental illness?A.Treating their symptoms as something normal.B.Taking their children to hospital for treatment.C.Staying with their children more often.D.Leaving their children alone.7.What is the purpose of this text?A.To criticize the writer’s mum.B.To draw public attention to teenage problemsC.To introduce the writer’s suffering of teenage life.D.To persuade parents to be serious about children’s mental illness. It isn’t easy to climb the Old Man of Hoy, one of the tallest in the United Kingdom. It is even more dangerous if you happen to be a blind climber, as Jesse Dufton is. The 34-year-old was born with a rare genetic disease (遗传病) that left him with less than 20 percent of his vision (视觉), which then kept dropping over the years. He chooses to climb, because it’s better than sitting at home feeling sorry for yourself, right? Climbing is not the most dangerous thing I do on an average day; crossing the road on the way to work is far more risky than Hoy.”Dufton has been climbing mountains since childhood. As a skilled climber, his father would take him out at weekends. He was always physical then, always up for adventure. He played sports at school, though quickly grew frustrated (沮丧) with many of them. Badminton was a joke for someone like me, and even blind cricket — with a ball with a bell in it — annoyed me. “Instead he was attracted to climbing and skiing, and insists that climbing is one of the safer activities for a blind person to undertake. “True, you can’t see the handholds, or the footholds. You can’t see where the opportunities are, or where to place your hands and your gear (齿轮), so you just have to take it slowly. You search around until you can feel for something to hold onto, and then basically repeat the process over and over again. To keep calm in these situations helps.”It was Jesse himself who made a documentary happen. He told the filmmaker Alistair Lee about his pastime, believing it might be worth capturing on film. I realized my story was quite unusual,” he says, adding that he felt almost duty-bound to share it. If somebody likeme watches it, and they find it inspirational, then it wouldn’t be right for me to keep that from them, wouldn’t it?”8.What is more dangerous in Jesse Dufton’s eyes?A.Losing eyesight gradually.B.Daily routines in his life.C.Climbing the Old Man of Hoy.D.Staying at home all day.9.What’s the second paragraph mainly about?A.Dufton’s passion for climbing.B.Skills needed for climbing.C.Father’s influence on Dufton.D.The limited choice for disabled people. 10.Jesse persuaded Alistair Lee to make a documentary to _________.A.show his unique talent for climbingB.inspire more people with disabilityC.give credit to the brave climbersD.educate people about risky sports11.From the story, we may infer Jesse Dufton is _________.A.responsible and helpful B.caring and carefulC.patient and brave D.adventurous and optimisticWhat does it mean to live a good life? This question has been debated by may philosophers(哲学家). In the field of psychology (心理学), two main ideas of the good life are influential: A happy life, full of stability, enjoyment and positive emotions, and a meaningful life, full of purpose, virtue and devotion. But what if these aren’t the only choices? In recent years, the psychologically rich life has been receiving greater research attention. It is full of strong emotions, both positive and negative, and new and interesting experiences. They are, however, seldom boring or dull.In a new study, Shigehiro Oishi and his colleagues found that many people’s self described ideal lives include psychological richness. When to chose a life, however, the majority chose a happy life and a meaningful life. Even so, some people still favored the psychologically rich life. These findings suggest that while most people do struggle to be happy and have meaning and purpose in their lives, a sizable number of people are content only living a psychologically rich life. Indeed, other new research suggests that for a lot of people, theintensity (强度) of the experience matters more than only how “positive” or “negative” it was. As Oishi and his colleagues conclude, “we believe that taking the psychologically rich life seriously will deepen, broaden and enrich our understanding of well-being.”At the end of the day, there is no one acceptable path to the good life. You have to find a path that works best for you. As Nietzsche put it: “No one can build you the bridge on which you, and only you, must cross the river of life. There may be countless bridges but there is one path in the world that none can walk but you. Where does it lead? Don’t ask, walk!”12.The author mentions the two main ideas of the good life to _________.A.introduce another aspect of a good lifeB.compare two different ways of lifeC.explain how to live a good lifeD.tell readers some good ways to live13.According to the passage, the psychologically rich life is _________.A.full of meaning and purposeB.nothing but different emotionsC.strong emotions and interesting experiencesD.all about being content with what you have14.Shigehiro Oishi and his colleagues hold the view that ________.A.the psychologically rich life is the best oneB.more people prefer to live a psychologically rich lifeC.there is no difference between,’ positive’ and ‘negative’ experienceD.studying psychological richness helps to understand well-being better 15.Nietzsche’s words in the last paragraph imply that __________.A.the suitable one is the best oneB.all roads lead to RomeC.God helps those who help themD.nothing is impossible for willing heart二、七选五Several studies suggest there are some very good reasons to think about ways to be kindan important part in how humans developed. In other words, they say scientific evidence suggests that we are designed to be kind.Oliver Curry is the research director at Kindlab, a non-profit organization. 17 Curry claims that “kindness is much older than religion.” “The basic reason why people are kind is that we are social animals.” he explained.18 University of London psychologist Anat Bardi studies value systems in people. In one study, researchers gave people a list of values - such as kindness, creativity, ambition, tradition, security, and seeking social justice. When asked to pick the most important, kindness won.But research shows that our bodies can also reward us for being kind. University of California Riverside psychology professor Sonja has tested this idea in many experiments over the past 20 years. In one experiment, she asked people to perform three acts of kindness for other individuals each week. She asked a different group to do three acts of self-kindness.19 The people who were kind toothers reported feeling happier and more connected to the world.20 Sonja studied a group of people with the disease multiple sclerosis (多发性硬化). She found that they felt better physically when helping others. Her research also showed that people who performed more acts of kindness had less inflammation (发炎) in their bodies.A.Other research has shown that many people prize kindness over other values.B.Research shows that kindness can be good for many speciesC.These acts could be small, like opening a door for someone.D.Its goal is to educate and urge people to choose kindness.E.Research shows that acts of kindness can improve our health.F.But it is not just emotional but also physical.G.That is why we help strangers in need.三、完形填空He came from somewhere south of Rome. Havre de Grace
Years ago, Americans used decoys (假肢) to hunt ducks and other waterbirds. Those days are gone. But collecting artful decoys is now popular. Havre de Grace is a town in the America state of Maryland, one part of which is famous for its wildlife. Captain Jobes is one of the top decoy cravers in Havre de Grace. Hunters use decoys to get ducks and geese to come close enough to shoot. The wooden birds are so highly respected here that Havre de Grace calls itself the decoy capital of the world. It also has a museum with more than 1,000 decoys. Most were hand made.

The glacier-covered peaks in his hometown in New Zealand proved a perfect training ground for the Himalaya. It was his fourth Himalayan expedition in just over two years and he was at the peak of fitness. On May 28, 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, an experienced Sherpa (夏尔巴人) set out and reached the South Summit by 9 a. m. next day. But after that, the ridge (山脊) slightly fell before rising suddenly in a rocky spur (尖坡) about 17 meters high just before the true summit. The formation is difficult to climb due to its extreme pitch because a mistake would be deadly. Scratching at the snow with his ax, Hillary managed to overcome this enormous obstacle, later to be known as the Hillary Step.At 11:30 a. m, the two men found themselves standing at the top of the world. “Not until we were about 50 feet of the top was I ever completely convinced that we were actually going to reach the summit.” Hillary later recounted, “Of course I was very, very pleased to be on the summit, but my first thought was a little bit of surprise. After all, this is the ambition of all mountaineers.”Emerging as the first to summit Mount Everest, Hillary Hillary continued by helping explore Antarctica, and establishing the Himalayan Trust (信托基金), through which he provided a number of beneficial services to the Himalayan peoples. It can provide invaluable insights into a dog’s breed, health risks, and even behaviors.DNA testing typically works by analyzing the genetic material found in a sample of cells taken from the inside of your dog’s cheek. This sample is then compared to a database of known breeds and genetic markers associated with certain traits or health conditions. The first step in obtaining a DNA test kit is selecting which type you want. Most companies offer several different types of tests that vary in cost and complexity. For instance, some tests just analyze your dog’s breed composition, while others can assess additional genetic markers associated with certain diseases or behaviors. Then it’s time to collect your dog’s sample using the provided swab (拭子) kit or saliva-collection tube included with most kits. The swab should be gently rubbed inside your pet’s cheek according to the kit’s directions before being placed into the collection container provided by the company. After collecting the sample, it should be mailed back to the laboratory for processing according to instructions given by the company providing the service. Once received by the lab, it typically takes 1-2 weeks for results to be processed and sent back via email or mail. Results will vary depending on which type of test was purchased, but they generally include detailed information about your pet’s breed composition as well as any potential health risks or behavioral traits associated with their genetics that could affect their overall well-being and quality of life.If you’re looking for an easy way to learn more about your pup’s background without spending too much money, then DNA testing might just be right up your alley.8.What is the primary purpose of DNA testing for dogs?A.To identify a dog’s personality traits.B.To reveal a dog’s future behavioral changes.C.To determine a dog’s socialization preferences.D.To obtain a dog’s breed and genetic information.9.How does DNA testing for dogs typically work?A.By analyzing the dog’s hair and fur.B.By conducting a blood test on the dog.C.By matching the dog’s DNA with a database.D.By studying the dog’s genetic health history.10.What is the correct order of having an DNA test?①get the sample processed①rub the swab gently①receive the result①select the type of test①place the swab into the container①mail the sample back to the labA.①-①-①-①-①-①B.① ①-①-①-①-①C.①-①-①-①-①-①D.①-①-①-①-①-①11.What is the text?A.A dog advertisement.B.A dog DNA experiment.C.A dog DNA testing survey.D.A dog DNA test kit promotion. In 2022, campaign group Fashion Revolution Chelsea dye garden for its Chelsea Flower Show presentation. An ancient craft, natural dyeing is a practice whose time has come again, with hand tie-dyed fashion also making a comeback in recent years. The revival has been encouraged by Covid lockdowns, “which allowed people to explore the craft at home,” says natural-dyeing enthusiast and teacher Susan Dye. It’s unlikely, though, that the practice would have caught on in quite the same way if not for a continually growing discomfort about fashion’s heavy footprint. From carbon emissions to animal cruelty, fashion is under considerable inspection. “Put it this way, 97% of dyes used in the industry are petrochemically (石油化学产品) based,” says sustainable fashion consultant Jackie Andrews, who helped advise the UN Ethical Fashion Initiative. “We’ve got net zero targets which mean we’re going to have to remove all those petrochemicals from the manufacturing cycle.”Fashion is a huge polluter. According to the UN Environment Program, the industry is responsible for up to one-fifth of all industrial water pollution — due to the fact that most clothes today are produced in poorer countries where regulation is weak and enforcement weaker still. Waste water is dumped directly into rivers and streams, poisoning the land as well as the water sources of people and animals who rely on them. It’s easy to see why someone who cares about people, planet and animals, as well as clothes, might turn to natural plant dyeing. From the beauty of the raw materials-often wild plants-to the property of only bonding with natural fiber like cotton and linen, from the minor footprint of upclycling old clothing that has grayed or faded over time to the vibrant and long-lasting dyeing results, plant dyeing feels like a quiet act of rebellion. This is why, while beginners start with simply changing their clothes’ color, new worlds open. Many of today’s natural dyers grow their own dye plants, run local community workshops, and advocate for change in industrialized fashion systems and beyond.12.What is the main reason for the growing discomfort mentioned in paragraph 2?A.The adoption of petrochemical-based dyes.B.The challenging net zero targets to be achieved.C.The fashion industry’s focus on luxurious designs.D.The disturbing consequences of the fashion industry.13.The author illustrates “Fashion is a huge polluter” by ______.A.making a comparison B.giving examplesC.listing numbers D.introducing a new topic14.What does the underlined phrase “a quiet act of rebellion” in paragraph 4 refer to?A.A protest against turning to natural fiber.B.An objection to upcycling old clothing.C.A struggle for a sustainable fashion industry.D.A resistance to vibrant colors in natural dyeing.15.What would be the most suitable title for the passage?A.The Environmental Impact of Natural DyeingB.Fashion Revolution’s Dye Garden PresentationC.The Return of Natural Dyeing with Ethical AppealD.The Petrochemical Dye Industry and Its Challenges二、七选五Some pals and I were in the midst of a pinball competition at a bar the other night when the machine kept breaking down. We called over a very busy employee who’s responsible for helping keep the place running. He put everything aside to fix our problematic pinballwas just doing the job he was paid to do. I insisted and got the group to agree to the plan, although somewhat reluctantly. My pinball wizard didn’t stretch out his hand, but how many times have we run across those payment screens that suggest a 20% tip for being handed a sandwich we ordered? 17 There is data to back up the trend: 66% of American adults have a negative view of tipping, and 32% say they’re sick of those payment-screen hints, according to a recent Bankrate survey.18 I admit there are times I suspect the tipping thing has gone too far - say, when I’m at a self-checkout line and there’s still request to leave something extra. But I’m generally willing to err on the side of caution: If someone is expecting a tip, I’ll assume they have financial reasons to do so. 19Plus, tipping is good karma (因果报应). It’s always worth it to tip in unexpected situations- ones that don’t necessarily involve a hint on a payment screen.20 He was so grateful for the $10 tip that later that night, he rewarded our group with well more than $10 in free tokens (代金券) for future play.So next time, there must be no arguments with my friends when times come to tip.A.This leads to what’s been called ”tipping fatigue (疲劳)”B.So, why am I willing to go against the trend and say yes?C.I suggested we tip him $10 and split the tip among all of us.D.There’s an argument that we should ban tipping altogether.E.Guess what happened next with my pinball-machine fixer at the bar?F.One dollar or two won’t make or break me, but it can possibly help with their rent.G.Should they earn far below the minimum wage, employers must make up the difference.三、完形填空said to me, “You’re not going to finish college. 2019-2020学年湖北省武汉市华中师大一附中高二(上)期中英语试卷一、阅读理解(本大题共10小题,共25.0分)AJeremy looked across the hot, grassy plain South Africa was a long way from the cool, green countryside of his hometown in Oregon."Ready?" Dad asked."Yes," Jeremy answered. They climbed into the old truck.Jeremy seldom spent time with his father, a famous wildlife photographer. The work seemed mostly hot and boring. As the truck ran across the rough dirt,Dad chatted with their guides,Mkhulu and Bheki. They spoke Zulu, which Jeremy couldn't understand, though they also spoke English. He watched for animals."There!" he shouted, pointing.Mkhulu slowed the truck.Jeremy realized he had been pointing at a rock.As the truck jumped up and down over a ditch, there was a big crash."Wait!" Jeremy shouted. The door had fallen off.Bheki threw the door into the back of the truck."Now we can see better," Dad laughed. They stopped near a watering hole.Mkhulu said he was friends with the elephants that sometimes gathered here.Maybe they'd see some. Before long,Jeremy felt vibrations.Elephants! A small group walked towards the water.Dad jumped out of the truck and focused his camera on the largest elephant.Jeremy spotted a very young elephant walking between two adults. It was tiny,by elephant standards. The two elephants beside the baby kept stopping to wait for it.Jeremy watched as they neared the water.Several larger elephants Jumped in the water.Jeremy lost sight of the baby.Where was it?Then he saw.It was in water up to its eyes. Its mouth was underwater. It held it its trunk up above the water. The baby was in trouble."Look!" said Jeremy. The bank was too steep for the baby.It couldn't climb out of the water.Other elephants tried pushing it,without success.Jeremy took the loose door from the back of the truck.Mkhulu saw what Jeremy was planning and ran to help.Together they dragged the door down to the water's edge,Mkhulu calmed the mother elephant, gently explaining that they were bringing a ramp for the baby. The mother knew Mkhulu and trusted him.She seemed to sense that they meant to help.Jeremy pushed the door onto the bank, angling it so the baby could walk up it to safety. The baby stepped onto the door. Its mother pushed.Three more steps, and they were up.The elephants gathered around the baby, touching it with their trunks."Boy,Jeremy," Dad said."That is one of the most exciting photo shoots I've ever done! I'm glad you came along."1.From the story,we know ______ .A. Jeremy had a very strong liking for natureB. Jeremy's father loved taking pictures of wild animalsC. Jeremy made a ramp for the baby elephant by himselfD. Jeremy and his father were in the green countryside of Oregon.2.What was the main problem in the story?______A. The door fell off the truck.B. Jeremy mistook a rock for a wild animal.C. The baby elephant got stuck in the water.D. Jeremy found his father's work hot and boring.3.According to the passage, how was the baby elephant saved?______A. Jeremy helped save it by making a ramp.B. Mkhulu dived into the water and rescued it.C. The mother elephant pushed it out of the water.D. Mkhulu helped Jeremy put the door into the back of the truck.BThere are more species of beetles than any other form of life.About 380 000 species of beetles are known to exist, and more are discovered all the time. There are several theories about why there are so many beetles, but fossils evidence shows that beetle species die out less than other animals,Beetle species exist in such huge number because beetles are true survivors. They refuse to die out.One of the reasons beetles survive so well is their body design. Most beetle species have two pairs of wings. The front pair of a beetle's wings are hard and thick. They are not used for flying. These protect the back set of wings and the beetle's stomach.Instead, some species of beetles have lost the ability to fly,but they are still equipped with front wings. The wings protect the beetle's soft parts from harm. These features help protect beetles, which makes them less likely to die out if they are faced with new predators (捕食性动物).Beetles can also eat a wide range of foods.Beetle species live all over the world, and they have many different types of food available to them. Most beetles are omnivores. That means they eat both plants and animals.Their mixed diets help beetles adapt to many different habitats.Over the course of time, food sources, like certain plants and animals,do not exist anymore.Others spring up.The beetle survives because it can find something to eat,no matter what. Finally, beetles are good at moving quickly over long distance.Any change in an animal's environment can be dangerous to it.For example, many species died out during the Ice Age,when Earth's temperature dropped for a long time. However, some species can avoid dangerous environment changes by moving to a new place.Research shows that beetles respond quickly to shifts in temperature. They can move to safer environments.Beetles' bodies and habits help give them an edge over other creatures. They are unlikely to die out.As a result, beetles make up nearly one quarter of all animal species. There are more types of beetles on Earth than there are types of plants. Some types of beetles that exist today were around during the Permian period of history,284 million years ago.Beetles, clearly, are here to stay.4.What is important about a beetle's front wings?______A. They are used to catch the prey.B. They enable the beetle to fly.C. They help the beetle move quickly.D. They protect the soft body parts.5.How do beetles respond to changes of habitats?______A. They are adaptable to the food change.B. They can change their body temperature.C. They are adaptable to the freezing cold weather.D. They can use their wings to fight against the cold.6.What is the most probable title of the passage?______A. The Ice Age affected the beetlesB. Different habitats affected the beetlesC. Beetles:the six-legged survivorsD. Beetles:the unique predatorsCWe talk continuously about how to make children more "resilient (有恢复力的)",but whatever we're doing,it's notworking.Rates of anxiety disorders and depression are rising rapidly among teenagers. What are we doing wrong?Nassim Taleb invented the word "antifragile" and used it to describe a small but very important class of systems that gain from shocks, challenges, and disorder. The immune (免疫的)system is one of them:it requires exposure to certain kinds of bacteria and potential allergens (过敏原)in childhood in order to develop to its full ability.Children's social and emotional abilities are as antifragile as their immune systems. If we overprotect kids and keep them "safe" from unpleasant social situations and negative emotions,we deprive (剥夺)them of the challenges and opportunities for skill-building they need to grow strong.Such children are likely to suffer more when exposed later to other unpleasant but ordinary life events, such as teasing and social rejection. It's not the kids' fault. In the UK,as in the US,parents became much more fearful in the 1980s and 1990s as cable TV and later the Internet exposed everyone, more and more,to those rare occurrences of crimes and accidents that now occur less and less.Outdoor play and independent mobility went down;screen time and adult-monitored activities went up.Yet free play in which kids work out their own rules of engagement, take small risks, and learn to master small dangers turns out to be vital for the development of adult social and even physical competence.Depriving them of free play prevents their social-emotional growth.Norwegian play researchers Ellen Sandseter warned:"We may observe an increased anxiety or mental disorders in society if children are forbidden from participating in ageadequate risky play."They wrote those words in 2011.Over the following few years, their prediction came true.Kids born after 1994 are suffering from much higher rates of anxiety disorders and depression than did the previous generation. What can we do to change these trends? We can't guarantee that giving primary school children more independence today will bring down the rate of teenage suicide tomorrow. The links between childhood overprotection and teenage mental illness are suggestive but notclear-cut.Yet there are good reasons to suspect that by depriving our naturally antifragile kids of the wide range of experiences they need to become strong,we are systematically preventing their growth. We should let go-and let them grow.7.Why does the author mention the immune system in Paragraph 2?______A. To stress its importance.B. To analyze the cause of anxiety.C. To question the latest discovery.D. To help understand a new word.8.Parents overprotect children because ______ .A. they are concerned about their children's safetyB. they want to keep children from being teasedC. parent-monitored activities are a mustD. children are not independent enough9.According to the author, free play can ______ .A. promote children's resilienceB. strengthen children's friendshipC. reduce children's risky behaviorD. develop children's leadership skills10.Which of the following does the author probably agree with?______A. Stop trying to perfect your child.B. It takes great courage to raise children.C. Prepare the child for the road, not the road for the child.D. The more exposed the children are to the risks, the more resilient they would become.二、阅读七选五(本大题共5小题,共10.0分)Most drinks stating that they are fruit-flavored (水果味道的)contain no fruit at all, while most of the rest containonly a small quantity of fruit, according to a study carriedby the British Food Commission."Shoppers need to check the labels before buying drinks, though sometimes the actual content can be non-existent,"said Food Commission spokesperson Ian Tokelove."Foodproduction is highly competitive.(1) It will increaseprofits, and consumers won't always realize they are beingtricked."Flavorings are focused on the flavors of natural foodproducts such as fruits, meats and vegetables,or creating flavor for food products that do not have the desired flavors.Researchers analyzed the contents of 38 strawberry-flavored products sold in stores.(2) Of the 11 products that did contain strawberries, five of them contained less than one percent real fruit. In addition, each juice box contained nearly eight teaspoons of sugar.(3) Let's take jam as an example. Some strawberry-flavored jam was labeled as containing no artificial colors, flavors,or sweeteners, but it contained absolutely no strawberries at all.(4) Consumers have the rights to know clearly about what they have bought.Under current UK law, food packages do not have to distinguish between natural and artificial flavoring."Describing a product as strawberry flavor and covering the surface of the packet with pictures of strawberries is misleading.(5) Unfortunately,it is also legal and widespread," Tokelove said."It's time to take measures to protect the consumers' rights."A.The products which contain real fruit are popular with people.B.The Food Commission suggested all flavors used in a product should be listed on the packaging.C.If companies can cut their costs by using flavoring, they are likely to do so.D.Actually the product contains just a tiny percentage of strawberry or even no fruit at all.E.It is important and necessary to demand a small amount of flavoring in the products.F.They found that about 60 percent of them didn't contain any fruit at all.G.Even products advertised as more natural often contained no fruit.11. ADear17-year-old self,When your Laker dream comes true tomorrow, you need to figure out a way to invest the future of your family. This sounds simple, and you may think it's a no-brainer,but take some time to think on it further.I said INVEST,I did not say GIVE.Let me explain.Purely giving material things to your siblings(兄弟姐妹)may appear to be the right decision. So you buy them a car,a big house, and pay all of their bills. You want them to live a beautiful, comfortable life, right? But the day will come when you realize that as much as you believed you were doing the right thing, you were actually holding them back. You will come to understand that you were taking care of them because it made YOU feel good,it made You happy to see them smiling and without a care in the world-and that was extremely selfish of you. While you were feeling satisfied with yourself, you were slowly eating away at their own dreams and ambitions. You were adding material things to their lives, but subtracting the most precious gifts of all.Invest in their future, don't just give.Use your success, wealth and influence to put them in the best position to realize their own dreams and find their true purpose.Put them through school, set them up with job interviews and help them become leaders in their own right.Hold them to the same level of hard work and dedication that it took for you to get to where you are now,and where you will eventually go.I'm writing you now so that you can begin this process immediately, and so that you don't have to deal with the hurt and struggle of weaning(断绝)them off the addiction that you facilitated. That addiction only leads to anger, hatred and jealousy from everybody involved, including yourself. As time goes on,you will see them grow independently and have their own ambitions and their own lives, and your relationship with all of them will be much better as a result.Trust me,setting things up right from the beginning will avoid a ton of tears and headache, some of which remains to this day.Much love,Kobe21.What might be the best title of this letter?A.To My Younger SelfB.For My Dear FamilyC.To My Beloved SonD.For My Older Self22.What may be"the most precious gifts of all"in Paragraph5?A Independence and growthB Wealth and healthC.Love and dedication D Success and leadership.23.What can we infer from this letter?A.The writer will stop offering his siblings help in the future.B.The writer didn’t think it a good fortune to become successful early.C.The writer intends to remind others not to care too much about materials.D.The writer was once troubled by the relationship between him and his family.BEvery day around the world, thousands of people with little or no scholarly training in art history walk into museums. They may or may not read notice boards that share relevant information of the artworks or artists.Imagine, before being permitted to direct their eyeballs to the art on the walls, museum visitors were required to read a15-or20-page introduction to each piece or each artist. How many people would go to museums if that were the case?Yet this seems to be the expectation when it comes to reading classic literature.Classic novels typically come with15-or20-page introductions, which often include spoilers assuming that readers do not come to classic books to discover,be absorbed in,and be surprised by the story world. Also, apparently,we mustn’t read classics alone, without experts guiding our experiences. However, classic literature is in a unique position to show us that were not alone in our pains and joys. By taking us out of our time, classic books free us to see beyond the set of beliefs we stick to and to connect human experiences that remain alive across time and place. What could be more grounding, more comforting, than seeing ourselves in the battles, longings, and pleasures that have played out across hundreds, thousands of years of human history? Our personal engagement is the first step of a longerjourney of discovery that deepens our knowledge and understanding of ourselves and our world. We may, for example, feel for Hester Prynne from Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter though we despair of the world she lived inWhile we’re letting go of things, let’s stop worrying about understanding everything. We can’t.It will be fun if we embrace curiosity, the pleasure of working out a mystery, and our common relationships as humans. We can feel, for example, the power of self-sacrifice in Charles Dickens’A Tale of Two Cities even when we lack full understanding of the cultural references and language.24.Most museum goers__________.A.enjoy reading notice boardsB.understand the artworks weck professional art knowledgeD.share common interest in artworks25.What can the"spoilers"in Paragraph2possibly be?A.Story writers.B.Readers'expectations.C.Guiding experts.D.Plots given away in advance.26.What prevents readers enjoying reading classicsA.Showing curiosity about the writers.B.Letting go of things.C.Trying to understand everything.D.Working out mysteries.27.What message is mainly conveyed in the passage?A.We should find more fun from classics.B.Reading classics is a personal exploration.C.Experts need to give readers better guidance.D.Classic literature benefits readers a great dealCOnline programs to fight depression are already commercially available. While they sound efficient and cost-saving,a recent study reports that they're not effective, primarily because depressed patients are not likely to engage with them or stick with them. The study looked at computer-assisted cognitive(认知的)behavioral therapy(CBT)and found that it was no more effective in treating depression than the usual care patients receive from a primary care doctor.Traditional CBT is considered an effective form of talk therapy for depression, helping people challenge negative thoughts and change the way they think in order to change their mood and behaviors. However, online CBT programs have been gaining popularity, with the attraction of providing low-cost help wherever someone has access to a computer.A team of researchers from the University of York conducted a randomized(随机)control trial with691 depressed patients from83physician practices across England. The patients were split into three groups:one group received only usual care from a physician while the other two groups received usual care from a physician plus one of two computerized CBT programs.Participants were balanced across the three groups for age, sex, educational background, severity and duration of depression, and use of antidepressants(抗抑郁药).After four months, the patients using the computerized CBT programs had no improvement in depression levels over the patients who were only getting usual care from their doctors.“It's an important, warning note that we shouldn't get too carried away with the idea that a computer system can replace doctors and therapists,"says Christopher Dowrick,a professor of primary medical care at the University of Liverpool.“We do still need the human touch or the human interaction, particularly when people are depressed.”“Being depressed can mean feeling lost in your own small, negative, dark world,”Dowrick says. Having a person, instead of a computer, reach out to you is particularly important in fighting that sense of isolation.“When you're emotionally fragile, you're even more in need of a caring human being,”he says.28.What does the recent study say about online CBT programs?A.Patients may not be able to carry them through for effective cure.B.Patients cannot engage with them without the use of a computer.C.They can save patients trouble visiting physicians.D.They have been well received by a lot of patients.29.What has made online CBT programs increasingly popular?A.Their effectiveness in combating depression.B.The low efficiency of traditional talk therapy.C.Their easy and inexpensive access by patients.D.The recommendation by primary care doctors.30.What is Professor Dowrick's advice concerning online CBT programs?A.They should not be neglected in primary care.B.Their effectiveness should not be overestimated.C.They should be used by strictly following instructions.D.Their use should be encouraged by doctors and therapists.31.Which is more important to an emotionally vulnerable person?A.A positive state of mind.B.Appropriate medication.C.Timely encouragement.D.Human interaction.DClaude Monet,Pablo Picasso and Leonardo da Vinci…the art world has never lacked talent. And now,a new painter is ready to join the list, although this one isn’t even human.Next month, the auction house Christies Prints and Multiples will make history by offering the first piece of art created by artificial intelligence(AI)for sale. The painting is a portrait of a man called Edmond De Belamy, and is expected to be sold for up to$10,000.The work, which features a man with mysterious look on his face, was created by software developed by the French art group ugero-Lasserre,an art collector, called the work"grotesque and amazing at the same time.”This isn't the first example of AI-produced artwork,as AI has already been used to write poems and compose songs. However, many people doubt whether it should be called art at all.According to Russian writer Leo Tolstoy(1828-1910),art is about creating emotion(情感).It's"a means of…joining people together in the same feelings,”he once said. So,if the emotion behind art is what makes it,the ability to create and use tools is what makes human beings different from other species. And as a tool itself, the AI technology used to create the portrait is the result of a lot of effort made by several designers.Together, they"fed"the AI a huge collection of paintings from the14th to the18th centuries, until it was able to work out how to make similar paintings of its own The introduction of Al art could be the beginning of a new artistic movement. However, not everyone is ready to welcome these high-tech artists just yet.“The human mind is what's behind the AI technology. And the human mind is not a cold, hard fact,”said Oscar Schwartz,a professor of AI."Rather,it is something that's created with our opinions and something that changes over time.32.Why does the author mention the artists in Paragraph l?A.To introduce their works.B.To make an advertisementC.To present a piece of news.D.To focus the topic on Al.33.What does the underlined word"grotesque"in Paragraph3mean?A.Strange.B.SimpleC.Messy.D.Understandable34.What can we learn about the AI-produced artwork according to Paragraph5?A.It comes from human works.B.It shows the human ability to create.C.It expresses human feelings effectively.D.It is beyond the imagination of humans.35.Oscar Schwartz thinks the human mind is__________compared with AI?A.limitedB.decisiveelessD.Meaningful第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填人空白处的最佳选项。
