Some may turn up their noses at eating meat that was once more common in pet food than pies. Others may raise an eyebrow or even an objection to being served one half of their country’s coat of arms.Kangaroo may not be to everyone’s taste, but if some of the country’s leading scientists have their way, it could soon be leapfrogging beef as Australia’s favourite meat.People have been eating kangaroo for some 40, 000 years, and in the last 10 years consumption has doubled. It is very healthy meat: free﹣range, free of chemicals, andfed by a natural diet. It is also exceptionally low in fat; a kangaroo meat has less than two percent fat whereas a typical beef steak has between ten and twenty percent. It may not sizzle on a barbeque like a beef T﹣bone does, but it is rich in iron, full of protein, and highin Conjugated Linoleic Acids (CLAs) that can reduce heart disease and obesity. Research conducted by Clare Engelke at the University of Western Australia showed that kangaroo can have up to five times more CLAs than other meat.Kangaroo farmers already harvest three million kangaroos each year and Dr. Kelvin George, a leading wildlife consultant, is keen to see this figure increase.“Kangaroos are soft﹣footed animals that damage plants far less than cloven﹣hoofed cattle, ” he says.“They do not hard en the all﹣important layer of the soil.”Dr. George is not the only expert to identify the environmental benefits of farming kangaroos.A report by economist Professor Ross Garnaut argues that Australia’s farmanimal industry is a greater contributor to climate change than the coal industry. Methane emitted by sheep and cows accounts for about 11percent of Australia’s greenhouse gases. A switch from cattle to kangaroo could change this: kangaroos produce very little amounts of the gas. Many cattle farmers, however, are unimpressed by Garnaut’s report. A quick scan of farming websites reveals counter﹣arguments ranging from a lack of consumer interest in kangaroo meat to the inaccuracy of the methane emission figures. Charlie McElhone from the Natio nal Farmers’ Federation argues that a switch from moo to roo could seriously damage Australia’s meat export industry.Ultimately it will be left to consumers to determine whether kangaroo steaks are on or off the menu. If consumer demand fails to match the supply, this could cost farmers millions of dollars each year. It could be argued, however, that the cost of ignoring kangaroo meat may be far greater.(1)In this text, the writer presents the kangaroo as________.A.a symbol of freedom.B.a marketable product.C.an endangered species.D.an environmental problem.(2)Why is the coal industry mentioned in this text?________A.To give an example of an industry in decline.B.To show the energy needs of large industries.C.To provide a comparison with the farm animal industry.D.To present an alternative viewpoint to that of Garnaut.(3)What is the cattle﹣farming community’s response to Garnaut’s report?________A.Cattle farmers are debating the report’s findings.B.Cattle farmers have shown no interest in the report.C.Cattle farmers are eager to engage Garmaut in discussion.D.Cattle farmers are willing to follow Garmaut’s suggestions.(4)Who will decide the production of kangaroo meat?________A.Consumers.B.Kangaroo farmers.C.Environmental experts.D.University researchers.【答案】BCAA【考点】阅读理解综合【解析】本文是一篇社会文化类阅读,文章主要介绍了有些人可能会对吃肉嗤之以鼻,这种肉在宠物食品中曾经比馅饼更为常见. 根据“People have been eating kangaroo for some 40,000 years, and in the last 10 years consumption has doubled..”可知在这篇文章中,作者介绍了袋鼠作为可出售的产品.故选B.(2)C.细节理解题.根据“A report by economist Professor Ross Garnaut argues that Australia’s farm animal industry is a greater contributor to cli mate change than the coal industry.”可知本文中提到了煤炭行业是为了提供与农场动物产业的比较.故选C.(3)A.推理判断题.根据“Many cattle farmers, however, are unimpressed by Garnaut’s report. They.考查代词.此处用代词they代替前面的mints and fruits. I’ve gone in China for two years. Gravity would be about twice as strong on Kepler-452b as it is on Earth, NASA said. The planet is located in the Kepler-452 system in the constellation Cygnus (天鹅座). Its sun has the same surface temperature as our own, but has a diameter that is 10 percent larger. While NASA scientists have no idea if Kepler-452b’s atmosphere is conducive to life, they do know that there has been plenty of time for organisms to develop.“It’s awe-inspiring to consider this planet spent 6 billion years in the habitable zone of its star, which is longer the age of the Earth,” Jenkins said. “That isconsiderable time and opportunity for life to arise somewhere on its surface or oceans if all the necessary condi tions for life exist on this planet.”4. Simply exposing students to a Chinese person affected their ability to speak English. Subjects who talked with the Chinese version felt more comfortable in their speech, but they produced 11% fewer words per minute. They actually became less fluent speakers. To make sure it wasn't just the avatar, researchers also showed people random images of China while the participants told a story. When pictures of their homeland appeared, fluency dropped 16% and volunteers were 85% more likely to use a literal translation, for example, calling pistachios “happy nuts”, because that's literally what theChinese word for pistachio means. When the students were shown pictures of fish with one swimming ahead of the others, their culture would change how they look at the photo. It is so popular among Chinese audience because they long for and cherish our own superhero,” said Tian Xiaopeng, the director. Some media also put on a lot of comments fromforeigners.“He’s never dead, he’s just fallen asleep. We all need a hero to look up to, to give us hope and courage when it is needed. We grew up listening to his tales, his great adventures and heroic deeds. What makes a true hero is not just helping people when one has the power, but having the courage to stand up against the evil even without power. And this is what the film is about. AThe traditional Chinese lunar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms. Cold Dew(寒露), the 17th solar term of the year, begins this year on Oct 8 and ends on Oct 23.Here are some things you should know about Cold Dew.Foggy autumnTemperatures drop significantly in October. When the cold air meet autumn rain, the abundant water vapor in the air soon reaches saturation(饱和), and then it turns into misty rain or fog. When the humidity is high, there will be foggy regions formed in many areas of China. Season for fishingPeople always say that fishing in shallow water in autumn does make sense. To prevent autumn dryness, many regions in China have the custom of drinking chrysanthemum wine. This is a tradition of the Double Ninth Festival , which often falls around Cold Dew.A great time for hikingDuring Cold Dew, North China takes on a look of late autumn with white clouds, red leaves and early frost. On the day of the Double Ninth Festival, people often climb hills with cornels, akind of plant. This custom aims to dispel evils(驱邪), and originated in the Eastern Han Dynasty (AD25-220).21. From the last paragraph we can infer that _________.A. The Double Ninth Festival often falls on Cold DewB. People often climb hills with family during Cold Dew.C. The Double Ninth Festival is to honor an ancient poet.D. Climbing hills on the Double Ninth Festival has a long history.BI moved to the Spanish capital, Madrid, nearly two months ago. I am here for a year teaching English in a secondary school as a language assistant. Before I arrived I thought I would be able to adapt to Spanish culture very easily, but my previous expectations have been very different from the reality of Spanish life.Firstly, I didn´t realize how difficult it would be to adapt to the Spanish day and the timings of meals. Spanish 'midday' is at 14:00, meaning lunch is never before then. My expectation was that I would be eating lunch at 12:00-13:00, but most days it´s 15:30 before I eat lunch. The same applies to dinner or tea. In the UK,dinner is between 18:00 and 19:00, but now that dinner time is 21:30.late of course means that Spaniards go to bed so much later. It is such a British thing to go to bed at 22:00! Also, because everything happens later in Spain, the evening socializing time, especially at the weekend, is very late!Queuing politely and being cautious around strangers is also something that is very British. I realized this when I arrived in Spain. I took it for granted that queuing patiently is the norm, but this definitely isn´t the case in Spain. If there´s a free table in a restaurant, you quickly take it, even if there´s other people who have been waiting longer than you. However, the lack of ´Britishpoliteness´isn´t all bad, as it reflects how Spaniards aren´t timid in public; being friendly and talking to someone you´v never met before is considered normal and is encouraged. Finally, the reality of the Spanish diet is very different from my expectations. Food products that are so normal in the UK aren´t nearly as popular here.25. After arriving in Spain, the author thought________.A. teaching English was very easy.B. getting used to Spanish culture was easyC. Spanish life was different from his expectation before.D. getting used to Spanish culture was difficult.26. According to Paragraph 2, British people in Spain will have lunch________.A. at 12:00—13:00B. after 15:30C. before 15:30D. at 15:3027. The underlined word “this” in Paragraph 3 refers to________.A. eating dinner so late.B. going to bed so early.C. eating dinner so early.D. going to bed so late.28.Waiting in line patiently is considered the normal thing in the following countries except____.A. SpainB. BritishC. AmericaD. ChinaCSwiss premium writing tool company Maison Caran d’Ache and luxury watchmaker MB&F recently teamed up to create a limited-edition fountain pen that’s shaped like a rocket ship and comes in a launch pad box. Considering the theme, the price of $19,900 is actually not that much of a surprise. The Astrograph fountain pen is reportedly the most complex writing tool ever designed in the Caran d’Ache workshops. The companies involved in the project said th at it was a massive technical challenge that required four years to develop the concept, plus an extra 12 months to come up with a functional final version. It contains no less than 99 innovative components created specifically for its design, and every unit requires over 500 manual operations. The unique fountain pen was inspired by MB&F founder Maximilian Büsser’s childhood dream of exploring space. The body of the Astrograph is shaped to resemble a rocket, and has a hidden arm disguised as the entrance of the spacecraft. AMaria Callas was born Maria Anna Sofia Cecilia Kalogeropoulus in New York City in 1923. Her mother wanted her children to study music. Maria had a beautiful voice but she was very shy. Her mother forced her daughter to sing at contests and on radio programs. Maria won many top prizes, but she wasn’t very happy.Maria’s father did not want to pay for expensive music lessons. This knowledge was made a few years before the last war, when radio waves from a transmitting (发送) station were reflected back from a distant airplane. It was realized that if an apparatus (装置) could be designed to send out radio waves all the time and record the echoes from any approaching airplanes, it would be a wonderful method of defense in war.Scientists set about solving the problem and radar was invented. An apparatus was made which sent out waves in pulses, and the presence of a distant airplane was shown on the screen (this is what we have in a television set). In this way radar station could detect the approach of enemy aircraft. After the war radar was put to peaceful uses. It is now installed at airports to guide airplanes down safely in fog. It is fitted to ships so that they are warned of obstructions (障碍物) ahead, such as icebergs. It guides ships into port. It provided airplanes and ships with a magic eye, with which they can see far into the distance, in the dark or in fog.28. He decided to create an alarm clock.“Everybody has to deal with these every day, and they are extremely unpleasant!" he says. He asked different people what they’d like to wake up to instead of a clanging, noisy alarm. A lot of them said, "The smell of bacon.”So Sallin and two classmates invented a new kind of alarm clock: a wooden box with a pig face and a digital clock that uses the smell of cooking bacon rather than sound to wake someone up. He explains, “There’s no danger of burning, because it uses halogen light bulbs(卤素灯泡)instead of a flame for cooking and turns off automatically after ten minutes.”Just a few easy steps are required to set the “alarm.”“What you do is put a couple of frozen pieces of bacon in the night before,” says Sallin. “If you set the alarm for 8:00, it will turn on at 7:50 and slow co ok for ten minutes under the halogen bulbs,” he says. Then the bulbs turn off and a fan blows the smell out through the pig nose.“So instead of an alarm or a beep or a radio, you smell yourself awake,” says Sallin. “Then you can open the door on the side and pull the bacon out and eat it.”When Sallin was a kid, he spent a lot of time making drawings of inventions. “I wanted to make an elevator in my back yard and a special tree house,” he says. “But I never really thought I’d be called an inventor!”32. Why did Sallin choose to create a new alarm clock?A. His classmates had no alarm clocks.B. His alarm clock in use was out of fashion.C. Many people disliked the noisy alarm.D. What do we know about Sallin?A. He decides to make more alarm clocks.B. He has a special gift for clock designing.C. He has always dreamed of becoming an architect.D.
