Who Want to Live Forever? If your doctor could give you a drug that would let you live a healthy life for twice as long ,would you take it?The good news is that we may be drawing near to that date,Scientists have already extended the lives of flies ,worms and mice in laboratories. Many now think that using genetic treatments we will soon be able to extend human life to at least 140 years. This seems a great idea. Think of how much more time we could spend chasing our dreams, spending time with our loved ones, watching our families grow and have families of their own."Longer life would give us a chance to recover from our mistakes and promote long term thinking," says Dr Gregory Stock of the University Of California School Of Public Health. "It would also raise productivity by adding to the year we can work."Longer lives don't just affect the people who live them. They also affect society as a whole. "We have war, poverty, all sorts of issues around, and I don't think any of them would be at all helped by having people live longer," says US bioethicist Daniel Callahan."The question is 'What will we get as a society? 'I suspect it won't be a better society."It would certainly be a very different society. People are already finding it more difficult to stay married. Divorce rates are rising. What would happen to marriage in a society where people lived for 140 years? And what would happen to family life if nine or 10 generations of the same family were all alive at the same time?Research into ageing may enable women to remain fertile for longer. And that raises the prospect of having 100-year-old parents,or brothers and sisters born 50 years apart. We think of an elder sibling as someone who can protect us and offer help and advice. That would be hard to do if that sibling came from a completely different generation.Working life would also be affected, especially if the retirement age was lifted. More people would stay in work for longer. That would give us the benefits of age-skill,wisdom and good judgment. On the other hand, more people working for longer would create greater competition for jobs. It would make it more difficult for younger people to find a job. Top posts would be dominated by the same few individuals, making career progress more difficult. And how easily would a 25-year-old employee be able to communicate with a 125-year-old boss?Young people would be a smaller part of a society in which people lived to 140. It may be that such a society would place less importance on guiding and educating young people, and more on making life comfortable for the old.And society would feel very different if more of its members were older. There would be more wisdom, but less energy. Young people like to move about. Old people like to sit still. Young people tend to act without thinking. Old people tend to think without acting. Young people are curious and like to experience different things. Old people are less enthusiastic about change. In fact ,they are less enthusiastic about everything. The effect of anti-ageing technology is deeper than we might think. But as the science advances,we need to think about these changes now. " If this could ever happen, then we'd better ask what kind of society we want to get," says Daniel Callahan. "We had better not go anywhere near it until we have figure those problems out." 1. brothers and sisters born 50 years apart 2. We had better not go anywhere near it 我们最好离它远点,这里的it指代前面讲的anti-ageing technology.练习:1. Which of the following is implied in the sixth paragraph?A Marriages in the US today are quite unstable.B More and more people in the US today want to get married.C Living longer would make it easier for people to maintain their marital ties.D If people live longer ,they would stay in marriage longer.3. All of the following are possible effects living longer might have on working life EXCEPTA Communication between employers and employees would be more difficult.B More money would be used by employees in payment of their employees.C The job market would be more competitive.D It would be more difficult for young people to be promoted to top positions.4. An important feature of a society in which people live a long life is thatA.t places more emphasis on educating the young.B.it is both wise and energetic.C.it lacks the curiosity to experiment what is new.D.it welcomes changes.5. Which of the following best describes Callahan 's attitude to anti-ageing technology ?A.Optimistic.B.Pessimistic.C.Reserved.D.Negative.
Ambition

英语文章阅读翻译-AmbitionIt is not difficult to imagine a world short of ambition. It would probably be a kinder world: with out demands, without abrasions, without disappointments. People would have time for reflection. Such work as they did would not be for themselves but for the collectivity. Competition would never enter in. conflict would be eliminated, tension become athing of the past. The stress of creation would be at an end. Art would no longer be troubling, but purely celebratory inits functions. Longevity would be increased, for fewer people would die of heart attack or stroke caused by tumultuous endeavor. Anxiety would be extinct. Time would stretch on and on, with ambition long departed from the human heart.Ah, how unrelieved boring life would be!There is a strong view that holds that success is a myth, and ambition therefore a sham. Does this mean that success does not really exist? That achievement is at bottom empty? That the efforts of men and women are of no significance alongside the force of movements and events now not all success, obviously, is worth esteeming, nor all ambitionworth cultivating. Which are and which are not is something one soon enough learns on one’s own. But even the mostcynical secretly admit that success exists; that achievement counts for a great deal; and that the true myth is that the actions of men and women are useless. To believe otherwise is to take on a point of view that is likely to be deranging. It is, in its implications, to remove all motives for competence, interest in attainment, and regard for posterity. We do not choose to be born. We do not choose our parents. We do not choose our historical epoch, the country of our birth, or the immediate circumstances of our upbringing. Wedo not, most of us, choose to die; nor do we choose the timeor conditions of our death. But within all this realm of choicelessness, we do choose how we shall live: courageously or in cowardice, honorably or dishonorably, with purpose orin drift. We decide what is important and what is trivial in life. We decide that what makes us significant is either what we do or what we refuse to do. But no matter how indifferent the universe may be to our choices and decisions, these choices and decisions are ours to make. We decide. We choose. And as we decide and choose, so are our lives formed. In the end, forming our own destiny is what ambition is about.

1.The phrase almost completes itself; midlife crisis. It’s the stage in the middle of the journey when people feel youth vanishing, their prospects narrowing and death approaching. There’s only one problem with the cliche (套话). It isn’t true. “In fact, there is almost no hard evidence for midlife crisis other than a few small pilot studies conducted decades ago,” Barbara Hagerty writes in her new book, Life Reimagined. The bulk of the research shows that there may be a pause, or a shifting of gears in the 40 s or 50 s, but this shift “can be exciting, rather than terrifying”. Barbara Hagerty looks at some of the features of people who turn midlife into a rebirth. They break routines, because “autopilot is death”. They choose purpose over happiness—having a clear sense of purpose even reduces the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. They give priority to relationships, as careers often recede Life Reimagined paints a picture of middle age that is far from gloomy. Midlife seems like the second big phase of decision-making. Your identity has been formed; you’ve built up your resources; and now you have the chance to take the big risks precisely because your foundation is already secure. Karl Barth described midlife precisely this way. At middle age, he wrote, “the sowing is behind; now is the time to reap. The run has been taken; now is the time to leap. Preparation has been made; now is the time for the venture of the work itself.”The middle-aged person, Barth continued, can see death in the distance, but moves with a “measured haste” to get big new things done while there is still time. What Barth wrote decades ago is even truer today. People are healthy and energetic longer. We have presidential candidates running for their first term in office at age 68, 69 and 74. A longer lifespan is changing the narrative structure of life itself. What could have been considered the beginning of a descent is now a potential turning point—the turning point you are most equipped to take full advantage of.1.What does the author think of the phrase “midlife crisis”?A.It has led to a lot of debate.B.It is widely acknowledged.C.It is no longer fashionable.D.It misrepresents real life.

Passage1Reading leadership literature, you’d sometimes think that everyone has the potential to be an effective leader.
I don’t believe that to be true. In fact, I see way fewer truly effective leaders than I see people stuck in positions of leadership who arc sadly incompetent and seriously misguided about their own abilities.
Part of the reason this happens is a lack of honest self-assessment by those who aspire to(追求)leadership in the first place. We've all met the type of individual who simply must take charge. Whether it's adecision-making session, a basketball game, or a family outing, they can't help grabbing the lead dog position and clinging on to it for dear life. They believe they're natural born leaders.

A 30-year study involving more than 70000 participants in PNAS, a journal of the National Academy of Sciences, shows that optimistic people live much longer than their pessimistic peers, and they are more likely to live longer than 85 years or more.

As the saying goes, health is wealth. This statement holds true not only in terms of financial stability but also in terms of longevity. It is a well-known fact that people who lead healthier lifestyles tend to live longer than those who don't. In this essay, I will discuss the correlation between good health and longevity.Firstly, a healthy lifestyle includes regular exercise and a balanced diet. Exercise helps to keep the body in shape, strengthens the immune system, and reduces the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. A balanced diet provides the body with the necessary nutrients to function properly and also helps to maintain a healthy weight. People who exercise regularly and eat a balanced diet are less likely to develop health problems that can shorten their lifespan.Secondly, good mental health is also crucial for longevity. Stress is a major contributor to many healthproblems, including heart disease, high blood pressure, and depression. People who are able to manage stress and maintain good mental health are more likely to live longer than those who struggle with mental health issues. This can be achieved through activities such as meditation, yoga, and therapy.Thirdly, avoiding unhealthy habits such as smoking and excessive drinking can also contribute to a longer lifespan. Smoking is a leading cause of lung cancer and other respiratory diseases, while excessive drinking can lead to liver damage and other health problems. People who avoid these habits are less likely to develop these health problems and are therefore more likely to live longer. In conclusion, good health is essential for a long and fulfilling life. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, good mental health, and avoiding unhealthy habits are all key factors in achieving good health. By taking care of our bodies and minds, we can increase our chances of living a long and healthy life.。

People who feel younger than their actual chronological1 age may live longer than those who feel older than they truly are, a new study says.
Perceived age might play a role in more than just how you feel. Results from the study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association suggest that people who feel a year or more older than they truly are could have around 41 percent greater risk for death.
University College London researchers looked at nearly 6,500 older adults, with an average age of 65.8 for the study. Around 70 percent of the subjects felt younger than they were, about a quarter felt their precise age and just under 5 percent felt a year or more older than they were, when asked "How old do you feel you are?"
Those who felt older than they were had a higher death rate after a follow-up period of 99 months. While just 14.3 and 18.5 percent of people who felt younger or felt their age, respectively, died during those 99 months, 24.6 percent of those who felt aged2 beyond their years had died.
The authors say more research is needed on the topic, but suggest it could be that those who feel "young at heart" have healthier behaviors and more resilience, giving them a stronger will to live. "Self-perceived age has the potential to change, so interventions3 may be possible. Individuals who feel older than their actual age could be targeted with health messages promoting positive health behaviors and attitudes toward aging," the authors write in the study.
The good news is, youcanchange your perception of howyoungyou are. And other studies suggest that there could be more benefits to thinking yourself younger, besides a longer life. One recent study found that helping4 participants have positive feelings toward age, by showing them positive word associations, helped older adults improve in physical tasks like balancing and getting up out of a chair, in as little as four weeks. A 2013 study found that negative stereotypes5 of aging and poor memory can make older adults feel up to five years older, regardless of their actual mental abilities.
There you have it. Age really should be treated as just a number.
