Wagener21 Mediport Kardiotechnik GmbH, Wiesenweg 10, D-12247 Berlin, Germany2Fraunhofer-Institute for Manufacturing and Advanced Materials (IFAM),Wiener Str. 12, D-28359 Bremen,Motivation:Long term stable magnetic fluids (MF) of high saturation magnetization at a rela-tively low viscosity are smart raw materi-als for the MF technology, such as for MF-radial and axial (ultra high vacuum) seals in machinery or for use in innovative elec-tromagnetic pump systems or in MF-sensors.Iron-nitride (ε-Fe3N or/and Fe4N) particles are potential magnetic components due to its bulk saturation magnetization J s of at least 1200 mT, which is situated between pure iron (J s = 2100mT) and magnetite (J s = 600mT). Furthermore, NAKATANI [1] already described iron nitride MF of satu-ration magnetizations by 233mT, but with-out any remarks to the bulk viscosity and long-term stability.In this paper iron-nitride MF and particles of different core sizes will be tested due to their oxidation stability (long-term mag-netic stability) and their optimum relation of saturation polarization and viscosity.Materials/Methods:Distillated iron pentacarbonyl (Fe(CO)5, BASF) was dissolved in decane and/or petroleum which already contains the sur-factant. This mixture was heated one hour at 90°C to obtain a non magnetic interme-diate, and then heated again for some hours at 150°C in order to finish the thermolysis of the iron pentacarbonyl. The particle formation was checked by interruption of the preparation process 10 times within some days. Dry Argon (grad 6) and/or ammonia (grade 5) passes the solution dur-ing the whole procedure. As surfactant Polyisobutenylsuccinimide (PIBSI),M=1300 (BASF) was used.After the preparation process the core/shell particles were more or less homogenously dispersed in the carrier liquid. Both the carrier free particles(cf. table) and the dis-persions were characterized due to crystal structure by XRD (Seifert C3000), particle size and chemical composition REM with EDX (Philips XL20), TEM (PhilipsCM30) and elemental analysis by hot gas extraction at 2000°C .A magnetic balance developed by the au-thors was used to measure the loss of mag-netic power as a function of time.Results:µm-iron nitride particles (ALFA) and more than 50nm particles prepared in the lab. were stable against oxidation, but can not be used as solids for MF.Contrary, PIBSI modified iron nitride sub-6nm particles are useful for preparation of MF, but the MF are .not long term mag-netic stable. The particles are oxidized to non magnetic particles depending on its core size and the exposed time to oxidiz-ers.Conclusions:PIBSI covered ε-Fe3N/ γ-Fe4N sub-6nm particles are not stable against oxidation. Magnetic fluids containing such particles loss their magnetic power in some days when the MF is kept under ambient condi-tions.The highest saturation polarization of a MF having a viscosity of 4 Pa s (27°C) which was prepared in this work was 110mT. device in which 0and πstates are controlled by an electrical current.In this system,the πstate appears in a superconductor/normal metal/superconductor junction due to the non-local spin accumulation in the normal metal which is induced by spin injection from a ferromagnetic electrode.Our proposal offers not only new possibilities for application of superconducting spin-electronic devices but also the in-depth understanding of the spin-dependent phenomena in magnetic nanostructures.PACS numbers:74.50.+r,74.45.+c,85.25.CpNowadays spin-electronics is one of the central topics in condensed matter physics [1,2,3].There has been considerable interest in the spin injection,accumulation,transport,and detection in ferromagnet/normal metal (F/N)hybrid structures [4,5,6,7,8,9].Twenty years ago,Johnson and Silsbee demonstrated the spin injection and detection in a F/N/F structure for the first time [4].Recently,spin accumulation has been observed at room temperature in all-metallic spin-valve geometry consist-ing of a F/N/F junction by Jedema et al.[5].In their system,the spin-polarized bias current is applied at one F/N junction,and the voltage is measured at another F/N interface for the parallel (P)and antiparallel (AP)alignments of the F’s magnetizations.They have ob-served the difference of the non-local voltages between the P and AP alignments due to spin accumulation in N.Also in a F/I/N/I/F (I indicates an insulator)struc-ture,a clear evidence of spin accumulation in N has been shown [6].In hybrid structures consisting of a ferromag-net and a superconductor (S),a suppression of the su-perconductivity due to spin accumulation in S has been studied theoretically and experimentally [10,11,12].Furthermore,ferromagnetic Josephson (S/F/S)junc-tions have been studied actively in recent years [13,14,15,16,17,18].In the S/F/S junctions,the pair poten-tial oscillates spatially due to the exchange interaction in F [13,14].When the pair potentials in two S’s take different sign,the direction of the Josephson current is reversed compared to that in ordinary Josephson junc-tions.This state is called the πstate in contrast with the 0state in ordinary Josephson junctions because the current-phase relation of the πstate is shifted by “π”compared to that of the 0state.The observations of the πstate have been reported in various systems ex-perimentally [15,16,17,18].The applications of the πstate to the quantum computing also have been proposed [19,20,21].Another system to realize the πstate is a S/N/S junction with a voltage-control channel [22,23].In the system,the non-equilibrium electron distribution in N induced by the bias voltage plays an important role,and the sign reversal of the Josephson critical current asa function of the control voltage has been demonstrated [22,23].In this paper,we propose a new Josephson device in which the 0and πstates are controlled electrically.In this device,spin accumulation is generated in a nonmag-netic metal by the spin-polarized bias current flowing into the nonmagnetic metal from a ferromagnet.In a metal-lic Josephson junction consisting of the spin accumulated nonmagnetic metal sandwiched by two superconductors,the πstate appears due to the spin split of the electro-chemical potential in the nonmagnetic metal.The mag-nitude of spin accumulation is proportional to the value of the spin-polarized bias current,and therefore the state of the Josephson junction is controlled by the current.Our proposal leads to an in-depth understanding of the spin-dependent phenomena in magnetic nanostructures as well as new possibilities for the application of super-conducting spin-electronic devices.We consider a magnetic nanostructure with two su-perconductors as shown in Fig. 1.The device consists of a nonmagnetic metal N (the width w N ,the thick-ness d N )which is connected to a ferromagnetic metal F (the width w F ,the thickness d F )at x =0and sand-wiched by two superconductors S1,S2located at x =L .In this device,the electrode F plays a role as a spin-injector to the electrode N,and the S1/N/S2junction is a metallic Josephson junction.The spin-diffusion lengthλN in N is much longer than the lengthλF in F [4,5,6,7,8],and we consider the structure with dimen-sions ofλF≪(w N(F),d N(F))≪λN which is a realistic geometry[5,6].In the electrodes N and F,the electrical current with spinσis expressed asjσ=−(σσ/e)∇µσ,(1)whereσσandµσare the electrical conductivity and the electrochemical potential(ECP)for spinσ,respec-tively.Here ECP is defined asµσ=ǫσ+eφ,whereǫσis the chemical potential of electrons with spinσand φis the electric potential.From the continuity equa-tion for charge,∇·(j↑+j↓)=0,and that for spin,∇·(j↑−j↓)=e∂(n↑−n↓)/∂t(nσis the carrier den-sity for spinσ),we obtain[8,9]∇2(σ↑µ↑+σ↓µ↓)=0,(2)∇2(µ↑−µ↓)=(µ↑−µ↓)/λ2,(3) whereλ=µN+σδµN, whereµN=0for x>0,Spatialpotential in bound state is formed by a multiple Andreev reflection of an electronwith the wave number k e =(√E F +E and a hole with k h =(√E F −E ,respectively,where E is the energy of the electron and hole measured from the Fermi energy E F .As shown in Fig.3,when there is the spin split δµN in N,a spin-up (-down)electron with the energy E ≈δµN (−δµN )is injected into S’s from N at low temperatures.The injected electron captures another electron with the energy E ≈−δµN (δµN )from the opposite spin band in order to form a Cooper pair in S’s.Therefore,a spin-up (-down)hole with energy E ≈δµN (−δµN )is reflected back to N (Andreev reflec-tion [25]).In other words,the spin-up (-down)electron with k e ≈(√E F +(−)δµN and the spin-up (-down)hole with k h ≈(√E F −(+)δµN mainly contribute to the formation of a Cooper pair.Note that the values of the wave numbers k e and k h differ due to the spin split δµN in contrast with the case of no spin split (δµN =0)in which k e ≈k h .The split δµN corresponds to the exchange en-ergy E ex of a ferromagnet in a superconduc-tor/ferromagnet/superconductor (S/F/S)Josephson[13,14,15,16,17,18]:In the Cooper pairs are formed by the An-of spin-σelectrons with the wave k e,σ≈(√E F +σE ex and holes with √E F −σE ex at the energy E ≈0.In the exchange interaction is much weaker energy (E ex ≪E F ),the stable state system depends on the dimensionless =(E ex /E F )(k F d F ),where d F is the and k F is the Fermi wave number [17].system is in the 0state,and the first 0-πat αF =π/2,and then the system is at αF =π[17].Because the value of E ex S/F/S system,the 0and πstates change the period 2π(E F /E ex )as a function the d F dependence of the Josephson shows a cusp structure and the critical minimum at the 0-πtransition [16,17].with the case of the S/F/S junction dis-when there is spin accumulation in N Fig.3,the 0or πstate is realized in junction depending on the parameter α=w N ).In this case,the width w N is fixed,πstates are controlled through the value proportional to the bias current I (see Eq.of the system is in the non-equilibrium current in contrast with F in the equilib-the S/F/S junction.However,one can dis-current in the non-equilibrium S1/N/S2same way as the equilibrium S/F/S junc-critical current is dominated by the en-the quasiparticles in N,not by the flow of the current [22,23].From the point of view of more detailed description,the free energy in the system is obtained by the summa-tion of the energy of the Andreev bound states [19].The bound state energy is calculated from the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation [26],and the free energy is minimum for the phase difference 0(π)for the 0(π)state.In the S1/N/S2junction with no spin accumulation in N (δµN =0),the bound states with the energy E >0contribute to the free energy.On the other hand,when spin accumulation exists in N,the spin-up (-down)bound states with the energy E >δµN (−δµN )contribute to the free energy because ECP is shifted by δµN (−δµN )in N.The 0-πtransition occurs due to the shift of the energy region of the Andreev bound states which contribute to the free energy.As an example,we consider the case that the F/N interface consists of a tunnel junction.The material pa-rameters P J =0.4,ρN =σ−1N =2µΩcm,λN =1µm,w N =800nm,and d N =10nm,which lead to ℜN =2.5Ω,are taken.The distance between F and S’s is taken to be L =500nm.When no bias current is ap-plied between F and N (I =0),the S1/N/S2junction is in the ordinary 0state because there is no spin split4of ECP(δµN=0).With increasing the bias current,the magnitude of the Josephson critical current decreases because the parameterαincreases due to the increase ofthe spin split.When the bias current reaches the value I=I0≈3mA which induces the spin splitδµN≈1meV at x=500nm,the parameterα≈π/2and thefirsttransition to theπstate from the0state occurs(the values of E F=5eV and k F=1˚A−1are taken[27]).
