A Book ReviewFrankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus: Mary Shelley.1823.Signet Classics.223pp.paperpack.I chose to read this book because it is generally considered as the first science fiction novel. And at meanwhile it consists of both Gothic element and romantic element. Besides, we have learnt the main theme in our English literature class, so I thought this one could be easy for me to understand. But unfortunately, I was wrong. The language of it is difficult and full of obscurity. Sometimes I had to read the same sentence or paragraph repeatedly. However, the story is touching, and it makes me think a lot.It was written in epistolary form, and in the first person point of view, so narrators’ thoughts are directly presented for us. And at the beginning of the story, a young explorer and his cast in the boat were stuck by icebergs. He was desperate and lonely. At that time, he saved a man form the freezing water, after that he seemed to find a mate could talk with. Frankenstein, a brilliant scientist, was also desperate and alone. When I read about this part, I did not understand why this young explorer, Robert Walton, showed such appreciation and kindness to a sorehead stranger. But when I almost finished it, I was impressed by how Frankenstein encouraged Walton and his cast while he was nearly to die. “Do you not call this a glorious expedition?”Frankenstien asked Walton, “Not because the way was smooth and placid as a southern sea, but because it was full of danger and terror.”I was impressed by Frankenstein’s firmness. And also, I admired the author wrote this masterpiece when she was only eighteen. Actually, I think Mary Shelley created Victor Frankenstein as a charming and intelligent gentleman. Therefore, he had his cousin fall for him, and made people around him liked him. It is romantic and at same time, very cruel to describe a brilliant man and how his life was destroyed little by little. And I wonder who the perpetrator of this tragedy is. Is the hideous monster or Frankenstein himself? The monster, at the beginning, just liked a child, an ugly child who was despised by his own parent. He was abandoned. But he did not know what he should do. He didnot know about love and hatred, but he could feel the beauty of nature. And there was fire; just liked what the title told us “modern Prometheus”. Fire can be seen as the simple of enlightenment. The monster was intelligent, even more superior to his creator. I was surprised that the monster could learn so fast. He learnt a language just through listening secretly to the conversations of that French family. And I have learnt English more than ten years, but still cannot use it properly. He was strong, too. It makes me think about Superman or something like that. It seems common for human being to imagine and even create a kind of “super human”, which may be not the main propose of Victor Frankenstein. But he also wanted to make a beautiful creature. Perhaps, it is a part of our nature to chase something better than ourselves. Then I think of death, and the fear of death. We all shall die one day. And so did our ancestors. But we all hold the will against death. In Frankenstein’s case, he went through several deaths of his family--- Elizabeth’s parents and his mother. He wanted to bring the death back to life. He achieved his goal, but he was frightened by his creature. I do not want to make more useless remark about why he was afraid of the monster. I am aware of that after reading Paradise Lost, the monster began to think about his identity and destination. It was occasionally occurred to me that if it is because of that, this monster began to think like human, behave like human and finally, demand to be treated like human. And then, he only found that he was seen as a monster. Because of his demand was not satisfied, he started to hate people, to curse his creator, and committee crime of murder. And I think this plot is such similar to the first crime of murder in human history, according to the Bible. Cain killed his brother, also because his need could not be contented by God, to be treated equal with his brother.I consider this book as a brief parody of the origin of human being, for it is full of introspection and self-exploration about human nature.。
弗兰肯斯坦书评

Thoughts about FrankensteinFrankenstein is regarded as the first science fiction written by British novelist Mary Shelly about a fanatical scientist who creates a monster and the disasters after that. It is a novel with Gothic elements and it reflects the darkness of human being. Beginning in the form of letters, the author uses flashback and makes the reader less boring when reading this book. The monster is one of the main character of the novel. He is created by a seemingly crazy scientist, Frankenstein and suffers the unfair treatments of human being. Then he takes revenge to the creators and his family and finally moves down to the path of destruction by himself. Actually in my opinion, the corruption of the creature has something to do with the behaviors of human beings. He lives in the jungle alone and takes notice to the old man and his poor family besides him. He cuts fire woods for them and even learn speaking and reading by himself in order to understand that poor family. When he takes his determinations to make friends with the kind family, they are too sacred about his ugly appearance and fights to get rid of him. That hurts the monster. He suffers so many similar events and finally goes to the path of self-destruction. I think it is the discrimination of human being that renders the changes of the monster. There is an old Chinese saying, “people at the beginning of goodness.” No one is born evil. To some extent, life changes people. Imagine that the monster gets fair treatments and lives a normal life. The ending of the story will be different. There are also examples in modern life. Ma Jiajue who was a good student and got many honors at school killed four classmates because of feeling despised. Maybe it is the poor family background and long-time self-abasement that causes the psychological illness of him and the harsh words from his classmates that cause the tragedy. When some tragedy happens, there are both immanent and external cause of it.When we turn our eyes to the creator, Frankenstein, we can see that he is a figure with different characteristics. When he is a scientist, he seems determined and crazy. When he wants to prove his lovely friend is innocent, he seems coward. Combined with the time of the creation, people are experiencing the fast development of technology and it has many great influences. When we pay more attention to the development of high technology, we should sometimes slow down and think about the impacts to our normal life. Technology is a double-edged sword and if we abuse them, itwill cause some catastrophes to human beings. Such as the clone technology, on the one hand, it actually extends the longevity while it also causes many social and moral problems. Whether we should use this technology has become a hot topic. But we should have a neutral and calm attitude towards the development of technology to make it have the most benefit towards human beings.Another important impression of this book is the encounters of the poor family living besides Monster. They are kind and warm-hearted but they are cheated by Safie’s father, then their life are changed. From this little scene, we can see the dark side of humanity. Sometimes you are sincere to others but you can not get what you deserve.Even though Frankenstein is only a science fiction, it also reflects many social problems and human foibles. Even though it was written in 19th century, it still has practical significance in modern society.。

He suffered enormous pain, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse. While reading the tragic experiences of the little Oliver, I was shocked by his sufferings. I felt for the poor boy, but at the same time I detested the evil Fagin and the brutal Bill. To my relief, as was written in all the best stories, the goodness eventually conquered devil and Oliver lived a happy life in the end. One of the plots that attracted me most is that after the theft, little Oliver was allowed to recover in the kind care of Mrs. Maylie and Rose and began a new life. He went for walks with them, or Rose read to him, and he worked hard at his lessons. He felt as if he had left behind forever the world of crime and hardship and poverty. How can such a little boy who had already suffered oppressive affliction remain pure in body and mind? The reason is the nature of goodness. I think it is the most important information implied in the novel by Dickens-he believed that goodness could conquer every difficulty. Although I don’t think goodness is omnipotent, yet I do believe that those who are kind-hearted live more happily than those who are evil-minded.For me, the nature of goodness is one of the most necessary character for a person. Goodness is to humans what water is to fish.。
弗兰肯斯坦典范英语读后感

弗兰肯斯坦典范英语读后感Frankenstein, the classic novel written by Mary Shelley, takes readers on a journey through the dark and complex themes of ambition, creation, and human nature. The book is filled with richly detailed characters, haunting landscapes, and thought-provoking philosophical questions. Upon finishing the novel, I found myself reflecting on the profound impact of Shelley's masterpiece and the timeless relevance of its themes. One of the most striking aspects of Frankenstein is its exploration of the moral and ethical implications ofscientific discovery and technological advancement. The character of Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant and ambitious scientist, becomes obsessed with the idea of creating life from inanimate matter. His reckless pursuit of this goalultimately leads to the creation of the monster, sparking a chain of tragic events that unfold throughout the novel.Shelley's portrayal of Victor's ambition serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of unchecked scientific progress. The novel raises important questions about the responsibility of scientists and the potential consequences of their actions. It forces readers to consider the ethical implications of scientific experimentation and the potential impact on society. Moreover, the novel delves into the deeply human themes of loneliness, alienation, and the search for identity. The monster, created by Victor and rejected by society, grapples with a profound sense of isolation and longing for companionship. The heartbreaking portrayal of the monster's yearning for acceptance and understanding serves as a poignant commentary on the human condition. It challengesreaders to consider the impact of social rejection and the consequences of ostracizing those who are different.Additionally, Frankenstein offers a thought-provoking examination of the nature of humanity and the complexities of human emotions. The monster, despite his physical appearance, demonstrates a deep capacity for emotion, empathy, and longing for connection. Through the nuanced portrayal of the monster's experiences and inner turmoil, Shelley prompts readers to question what truly defines humanity and to consider the ways in which society shapes our perceptions of others.Furthermore, the novel's evocative descriptions of the natural world and its atmospheric settings contribute to its overall impact. Shelley's vivid depiction of the rugged landscapes and gothic imagery creates a haunting atmosphere that lingers in the reader's mind long after the final pages have been turned. The imagery serves as a powerful backdropfor the novel's themes, adding depth and intensity to the story. In conclusion, Frankenstein is a timeless work of literature that continues to captivate readers with its compelling themes, complex characters, and thought-provoking narrative. Shelley's exploration of ambition, scientific responsibility, and the human condition resonates deeply with readers, challenging them to reconsider their perceptions of science, society, and the essence of humanity. As I reflect on the profound impact of Frankenstein, I am reminded of the enduring relevance of its themes and the enduring power ofits storytelling. Mary Shelley's masterpiece will undoubtedly continue to provoke introspection and discussion for generations to come.。

Book review of Frankenstein
Frankenstein or, The Modern Prometheus, is a novel written by British author Mary Shelley about eccentric scientist Victor Frankenstein, who creates a grotesque creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment. Shelley started writing the story when she was eighteen, and the novel was published when she was twenty. The first edition was published anonymously in London in 1818. Shelley's name appears on the second edition, published in France in 1823.
Frankenstein is infused with some elements of the Gothic novel and the Romantic Movement and is also considered to be one of the earliest examples of science fiction. Brian Aldus has argued that it should be considered the first true science fiction story, because unlike in previous stories with fantastical elements resembling those of later science fiction, the central character "makes a deliberate decision" and "turns to modern experiments in the laboratory" to achieve fantastic results. It has had a considerable influence across literature and popular culture and spawned a complete genre of horror stories, films, and plays.
Since publication of the novel, the name "Frankenstein" is often used to refer to the monster itself, as is done in the stage adaptation by Peggy Webbing. This usage is sometimes considered erroneous, but usage commentators regard the monster sense of "Frankenstein" as well-established and an acceptable usage. In the novel, the monster is identified via words such as "creature", "monster", "fiend", "wretch", "vile insect", "daemon", "being", and "it". Speaking to Victor Frankenstein, the monster refers to himself as "the Adam of your labors", and elsewhere as someone who "would have" been "your Adam", but is instead "your fallen angel."
Frankenstein is a really fantastic novel. I think the author has the power of both conception and language. His original genius and happy power of expression, although he is less convinced about
the way in which the monster gains knowledge about the world and language. Despite the reviews, Frankenstein achieved an almost immediate popular success. It became widely known especially through melodramatic theatrical adaptations—Mary Shelley saw a production of Presumption; or The Fate of Frankenstein, a play by Richard Brinley Peace, in 1823. A French translation appeared as early as 1821.
I see many people said that this novel is deeply talking about the political, but I don`t like this understanding. I think it is just a common science fiction novel. And what I think a lot is about the sin. Such defective nature is commonly called the "original sin". Because of it, the monster loses his nature and inner-self which was shaped by its creator. He abuses his free will, and becomes the slave of his lust. It leads to separation, the domination of emotion, hatred and killing consequently. And finally it loses immortality and goes for death. Where does the original sin come from? Is it inevitable? Shelley's creator and creation story is not brand new. The "original sin" is borrowed from Genesis in Holy Bible, and its subtitle "the modern Prometheus" echoes Frankenstein's archetype in Greek mythology.。
