AI love to read before I go to sleep. It usually makes me feel calm. But a big part of this depends on what I read. I love to read Oor Wullie and The Broons. Very often I’m smiling before I go to sleep.I decide to write about this in a blog because I find that so many of us go to sleep with stress. Before we go to sleep, we may run over the day in our minds, and worry about tomorrow. We also may watch the news on TV, read the news on our smart phones or tablets, or even answer work emails. But the news is rarely proclaiming (宣告) to us all the good that’s happening in the world and work emails make us feel that we’re still at work. All these things may leave us a stressful sleep.Oor Wullie and The Broons are not the only things I ever read at night. I sometimes read novels but, with the odd exception, I mostly avoid anything that is too mentally taxing or stimulating late at night unless it’s something that inspires me or is clearly helpful in my life. And even if I do read something mentally stimulating, when I feel myself getting tired I lay that book down and pick up a trusty old Oor Wullie or The Broons for the last 10 or 15 minutes. Doing this makes my mind quiet and helps ensure I get a peaceful night’s sleep. Reading about Wullie or Maw and Paw Broon is like a comfort blanket for me.I’d suggest you find a light-hearted reading as a comfort blanket at bedtime, especially if you find yourself stressed or depressed a lot of the time, or if you find difficulty unwinding at the end of a day. It is the thing that can gently turn your attention towards lightness and ease.If your material makes you laugh, then you may feel even better. Several studies show that laughter boosts happy chemicals in the brain, it strengthens the immune system, it’s good for the heart, and it is most definitely good for mental health. It even helps us improve our relationships. And if you do happen to pick up a copy of Oor Wullie or The Broons, I hope you find it just as entertaining as I do.21. What can we learn about Oor Wullie and The Broons?A. They make people run over the past days.B. They are the best books to read before sleeping.C. They are extremely popular with young people.D. They make people feel relaxed and happy.22. Which of the following is NOT the cause of a stressful sleep according to the passage?A. Having the day running in our minds.B. Too exciting reading on smart phones.C. Worrying about the uncertain future.D. Watching various news on TV.23. What is Paragraph 6 mainly about?A. What material brings us laughter.B. How laughter affects our health.C. What benefits laughter brings to us.D. Why laughter is good for us.24. The main purpose of the text is to tell us _____.A. the importance of reading before sleepingB. the importance of a good mood before sleepingC. how to make ourselves stay relaxed before sleepingD. how to choose a book worthy to be read before sleepingBElephants in Uganda are starting to come close to villages near national parks. The big animals are a real danger to people. So, the Uganda Wildlife Authority has been giving people new tools to keep the elephants away: vuvuzelas. They are plastic instruments some fans use at sports events. The instruments make a loud sound elephants do not like. The animals leave, and no one is harmed. A spokesperson for the Uganda Wildlife Authority says vuvuzelas work because they don’t threaten the elephants. That is important because an elephant that feels threatened is more likely to attack. So far, no one has reported an elephant attacking in answer to a vuvuzela.Officials and villagers have tried other ways to stop elephants from coming near farms and houses. They have built beehives--- houses for flying insects that sting. They have hung ropes covered in spicy oil. They have dug long, deep holes. And they have used guns, called A- K47s.An official from the Uganda Wildlife Authority explains that people shoot the gun in the air to scare the elephant. But over time, the elephants have stopped being afraid of the gun. They only look at the shooter and wave their ears.Another official for the Uganda Wildlife Authority, Gessa Simblicious, says one elephant- prevention solution will not work everywhere in Uganda. And one day, elephants may accept the vuvuzela noise, just as they do the sound of the A- K47.But right now, vuvuzelas are an effective, non- violent and fun way to deal with a serious problem.25. AMaybe ten-year-old Elizabeth put it best when she said to her father. “But, Dad, you can’t behealthy if you’re dead.〞Dad, in a hurry to get home before dark so he could go for a run, had forgotten to wear his safety belt — a mistake 75% of the US people make every day. The big question is why. There have been many myths〔虚构故事〕about safety belts ever since their first appearance in cars some forty years ago. The following are three of the most common myths.Myth Number One: It’s best to be “thrown clear〞 of a serious accident.Truth: Sorry, but any accident serious enough to “throw you clear〞 is also going to be serious enough to give you a very bad landing. And chances are that you’ll have traveled through a windshield (挡风玻璃) or door to do it. Studies show that chances of dying after a car accident aretwenty-five times greater if people are “thrown clear.〞Myth Num ber Two: Safety belts “trap〞 people in cars that are burning or sinking in water. Truth: Sorry again, but studies show that people knocked unconscious (昏迷) due to not wearing safety belts have a greater chance of dying in these accidents. People wearing safety belts are usuallyprotected to the point of having a clear head to free themselves from such dangerous situations,be trapped in them.Myth Number Three: Safety belts aren’t needed at speeds of less than 30 miles per hour. Truth: when two cars traveling at 30 mph hit each other, an unbelted driver would meet the windshield with a force equal to diving headfirst into the ground from a height of 10 meters.21. The reason why Father got home in a hurry was that he ________.A. wasn’t feeling very w ellB. wanted to take some exerciseC. hated to drive in the darkD. didn't want to be caught by the police高二英语第2 页〔共8 页〕22. Some people prefer to drive without wearing a safety belt because they believe ________ .A. cars catch fire easilyB. they will be caught when help comesC. they will be unable to think clearly in an accidentD. the belt prevents them from escaping in an accident24. If you ever visit Mexico, you will see that the peoplethere take begging as nothing to get upset about and nothing to get embarrassed by.So, this little boy came to the door, a boy about the same age as my student’s son. The father andthe son went to the front door, and the father went back with his five-year-old son and said to him,“Give him one of your toys.〞 At the words, the little boy quickly picked up one toy, and his father saidto him, “No, no, give him your favorite toy.〞And the little boy, like a little tiger, said, “No way!〞 He cried; he refused. But the father, like abig tiger in a way, insisted gently, “No, you must give him one of your favorite toys.〞And finally the boy, with his head down, picked up a toy he had just gotten. The father waited in theliving room, and the boy walked to the front door with the toy in his hand. The father waited and waited. What do you think happened? After a couple of minutes, his son came running back into the living room, his face lighted up. “Daddy,〞 he said, “can I do that again?〞I think I have got the answer to the question.25. That is the message Dr. Shen Ziyin wants to give the world. And the Chinese doctor claims that he has found an answer to the problems of aging. His solution is a herbal medicine to slow the process of aging.Dr. Shen Ziyin has been trained in Western medicine. At the same time he studiedtraditional Chinese medicine. And, he has been working for the past forty years to put together the best of both and find a cure for aging. He has taken a hint from the ancient Chinese med icine system called “Shen〞.According to Shen, it is the kidney (肾) that adjusts the functioning of the body as well as its aging process. It is responsible for the level of activity that the human bodies go through. Studies conducted by Dr. Shen show that herbal medicine based on the Shen system slows the aging process. We notice that when people grow old, they have reduced strength, loss of hair, backache, weakness in general, and wrinkles. This happens because when people grow old, their bodies produce T-cells. These T-cells contain a particular substance called Fas. Fas makes the cellsthe body destruct themselves. So the only way to slow down aging is to slow the production of T-cells in the body. This can happen if people eat low-calorie food. Then the body is not active enough to produce extra T-cells. But, is going hungry all the time a good price to pay for staying young? This is where Dr. Shen’s herbal medicine comes. But how effective it will be, only timecan tell.28. How did Dr. Shen find the solution to the problem of aging?A. By studying Western medicine.B. By learning traditional Chinese medicine.C. By doing research on both Western and Chinese people.D. By combining both Western and Chinese medicine.29. What plays the most important role in keeping people young according to Shen?A. There have been more than 100 million references to the word ―tuhao‖ on social media since early September. It‘s being used to describe everything from the new p eople‘s daily building, to expensive celebrity weddings full of millionaires, and the new gold-colored iPhone. In Chinese ―tu‖ means earth and ―hao‖ means rich. To say someone is tuhao is to imply they come from a poor peasant background, and have made it rich quickly—but don‘t quite have the manners to go along with it. ―It‘s like the term ‗nouveau riche‘‖, says Professor Steve Tsang at the School of Contemporary Chinese Studies in Nottingham, ―but has even more negative meanings, suggesting a certain vulgarity(粗俗).‖―Tuhao‖ is actually an old word, dating back perhaps as far as the Southern Dynasty—1,500 years ago, but it has always meant something rather different. During the communist revolution, from the 1920s to early 1950s, it was widely used to refer to landholders and gentry(乡绅)who would often do bad things to those beneath them. This new usage of the term took off in September after a widely-shared joke about a rich, but unhappy man, who goes to a Buddhist monk for advice, expecting to be told to live a more simple life. The monk replies instead with a sentence, ―Tuhao, let‘s be friends!‖Chinese Internet users are highly creative in their use of language, and are constantly inventing, and re-inventing words as a way of getting past censorship(审查) rules. But in this case, its popularity seems to be down to the fact that it expresses China‘s changing society so well—many people sneer at those with wealth, but are secretly jealous.33.
