He had a printout (打印稿) of Google Maps’ directions from the airport to a hotel on the main street, but just couldn’t find his hotel. He clearly didn’t have a phone, so after m aking sure his written directions, I mapped it on my phone and showed him exactly where he needed to go.He mentioned that he had tried going there, but there was no such street number and he just couldn’t locate his hotel. I confirmed it again for him. H e thanked me with a big smile. I got into my car and he got into his, and we parted. As I drove to the next grocery store and went in, I suddenly realized that something was wrong with the directions — so I searched for the address again and realized that he was looking for the right address but it was in a city a half hour away.Unfortunately it had been several minutes, and in the rush hour, the chances of finding him a mile away where he was surely still looking around, were slim to none. But I thought I’d give it a try and took off in that direction. I had barely noticed what his car looked like, and was just about to give up. I parked my car as I considered what else I could do — just then, he drove right by and pulled over into a nearby parking spot, still confused about where he was. When I pulled in next to him, he couldn’t believe it. “How did you find me?” he asked. “I’m not sure, but I figured out that you are in the wrong city!” I showed him the information about the hotel, pulled up in the right directions for him, and after more smiles, laughs and a handshake, we parted.41. She could understand and remember anything that was explained to her just once. But over the past months, her grades had started dropping. Her mother often caught her staring out of the window for hours on end. Her teacher constantly pulled her up for daydreaming in class. How could she grasp what was being taught if she was not paying attention? Finally, her father took her to see a child guidancecounselor. Here her parents learnt that daydreaming is a fairly common phenomenon — and though it is not harmful, it should not be indulged in (放纵) excessively. It is easy enough to diagnose (诊断) daydreaming, but unfortunately it is rather difficult to get rid of it. And if taken to an extreme, it can physically endanger the life of children or others around.Richa Saklani, a reader from India, submitted this interesting case of Mark Twain. “There are patterns, no doubt, but creativity and genius don’t come from patterns. Mark Twain was a daydreamer—in his autobiography, he recounted an episode(片段) —he was taking his little baby for a drive when he began to daydream — the clothes flew off the child and the child was blue with cold. A few days later the child died.”Thus as you can see, while daydreaming does inspire imagination, it could also shut you out of reality. This is because the daydreamer is so lost in his thoughts that he loses his bearings entirely and is oblivious (忘却的,遗忘的) to things around him. If a daydreaming child happens to be on the road, this state of mind can prove to be very dangerous, or even fatal. I know of a person who almost got run over by a truck. He said he didn’t even see it coming, so lost was he in his business problems.51. What probably caused Shraviya’s grades to drop?A. Lack of interest in her study.B. Pressure from her parents.C. Daydreaming.D. Her imageination.52. What can we learn about daydreaming from the second paragraph?A. It’s hard to find out.B. It’s difficult to diagnose.C. It’s hard to stop daydreaming.D. It should be encouraged.53. The case of Mark Twain is mentioned to show .A. Mark Twain is a geniusB. the harm of daydreamingC. the creativity of Mark TwainD. Mark Twain is a daydreamer54. What can we infer from the last paragraph?A. Daydreaming can cause danger.B. Daydreamers usually forget things.C. People who like daydreaming can easily get lost.D. People full of imagination may daydream more.55. What’s the author’s attitude towards daydreaming?A. Doubtful.B. Negative.C. Appreciative.D. In some cases they want to protect local people or conserve places that have a historic value.National parks have become extremely popular because people can do a lot of things there. They can enjoy nature with its tall mountains, waterfalls and beautiful lakes. Some of us want to go and see wild animals that we can’t see a nywhere else. Natural parks are great places to enjoy outdoor activities, like boating, hiking or camping.National parks are also created because we want to protect our environment. Certain plants and animals only survive in rainforests, deserts or mountainous areas. By putting them under special protection we can save them from becoming extinct (灭绝的).Today there are thousands of national parks and protected areas around the world. The first national parks were established in the United States in the 19th century. Currently, the US has over 60 national parks in all parts of the country.Although governments around the world do a lot to protect the living space in these areas there are still many dangers that threaten national parks.Countries are pressured to give up national parks in favor of economic development of the area and the creation of jobs. Sometimes they contain valuable forests or mineral resources that can be exploited (开发).Every year more and more tourists visit national parks around the world. Although many areas need the income that tourists bring, too many cars and overcrowding lead to pollution and much waste is left in untouched nature. Even though national parks are far away from cities, damaging pollution from factories can endanger plants and animals.Global warming also causes certain plants and animals in national parks to become extinct. Many national parks around the world are in areas with extreme weather conditions.56. What does Paragraph 1 mainly tell us?A. The reasons for protecting nature.B. It is the wildest river in the world that flows through a heavily populated area. It supplies water to more than eighty percent of four million people who live in the Washington area. Millions of people use the river and the land nearby for recreational (娱乐的) activities. The Potomac River has played an important part in American history. For example, America’s first president, George Washington, lived for many years along the Potomac in Virginia. He urged that the river be developed to link Americans with the West.We will explore the Potomac River in a small boat. Our trip will take seven or eight days. The boat has only enough space for two or three people. We start in the calm waters of Shepherdstown, West Virginia. A guide in the boat next to us says people lived here fifteen thousand years ago. The Potomac River was a meeting place for American Indians long before Europeans arrived. The Indians gathered to trade food and furs. Today, people often find objects that the Indians left behind. Now we are getting close to Washington, D.C. Here the river begins to look dangerous. Water moves fast in the gorge. We take land transportation to follow the river into America’s capital. Washington, D.C. was built in a low wetland area in eighteen hundred. The British burned the city in eighteen twelve. But Americans soon rebuilt it.While in Washington, we decide to continue our trip on the Potomac River in a larger boat for visitors. This will take us past George Washington’s home in Virginia. After passing Mount Vernon, we end our trip on the Potomac River as it flows toward the Chesapeake Bay.We have enjoyed our trip on the Potomac River. By now, we have a deep feeling for the beauty of the river. But the beauty is damaged by industry, agriculture and human development.61. It can be concluded that the author’s trip is .A. enjoyable and educationalB. exciting and dangerousC. comfortable but boringD. pleasant and dangerous65. What would be written in the following paragraph if the passage is continued?A. The author’s return journey.B. Great development along the Potomac River.C. In fact, the answer lies in the word “cold” itself and the following may be of some help to you.The letter C stands for cover. It means you should cover your body in the cold weather.

AThe oldest stone buildings in the world are the pyramids (金字塔).They have stood for nearly 5, 000 years, and it seems likely that they willcontinue to stand for thousands of years yet. There are over eighty of themscattered (散布) along the banks of the Nile, some of which are differentin shape from the true pyramids. The most famous of these are the “Step” pyramid and the “Bent” pyramid. Some of the pyramids still look as much alike as they must have been when they were built thousands of years ago. Most of the damage suffered by the others has been at the hands of men who were looking for treasure or,more often, for stones to use in modern buildings. The dry climate of Egypt has helped to keep the pyramids in good condition, and their very shape has made them less likely to fall into ruin. These are good reasons why they can still be seen today, but perhaps the most important is that they were planned to last forever. The “Step” pyramid had to be on the west side of the Nile, the side on which the sun sets. This was for spiritual reasons. It also had to stand well above the level of the river to protect it against the regular floods. It could not be too far from the Nile, however, as the stones to build it needed to be carried in boats down the river to the nearest point. Water transport was, of course, much easier than land transport. The builders also had to find a rock base, which was not likely to crack (破裂) under the great weight of the pyramid. Finally, it had to be near the capital,or better still near the king's palace so that he could visit it easily to personally check the progress being made on the final resting place for his body.语篇解读:本文主要介绍了埃及的金字塔能保存长久的原因及其中被称为Step的金字塔建立在尼罗河西侧的原因。
